  • ASP.NET MVC & EF4 Entity Framework - Are there any performance concerns in using the entities vs retrieving only the fields i need?

    - by Ant
Lets say we have 3 tables, Users, Products, Purchases. There is a view that needs to display the purchases made by a user. I could lookup the data required by doing: from p in DBSet<Purchases>.Include("User").Include("Product") select p; However, I am concern that this may have a performance impact because it will retrieve the full objects. Alternatively, I could select only the fields i need: from p in DBSet<Purchases>.Include("User").Include("Product") select new SimplePurchaseInfo() { UserName = p.User.name, Userid = p.User.Id, ProductName = p.Product.Name ... etc }; So my question is: Whats the best practice in doing this? == EDIT Thanks for all the replies. [QUESTION 1]: I want to know whether all views should work with flat ViewModels with very specific data for that view, or should the ViewModels contain the entity objects. Real example: User reviews Products var query = from dr in productRepository.FindAllReviews() where dr.User.UserId = 'userid' select dr; string sql = ((ObjectQuery)query).ToTraceString(); SELECT [Extent1].[ProductId] AS [ProductId], [Extent1].[Comment] AS [Comment], [Extent1].[CreatedTime] AS [CreatedTime], [Extent1].[Id] AS [Id], [Extent1].[Rating] AS [Rating], [Extent1].[UserId] AS [UserId], [Extent3].[CreatedTime] AS [CreatedTime1], [Extent3].[CreatorId] AS [CreatorId], [Extent3].[Description] AS [Description], [Extent3].[Id] AS [Id1], [Extent3].[Name] AS [Name], [Extent3].[Price] AS [Price], [Extent3].[Rating] AS [Rating1], [Extent3].[ShopId] AS [ShopId], [Extent3].[Thumbnail] AS [Thumbnail], [Extent3].[Creator_UserId] AS [Creator_UserId], [Extent4].[Comment] AS [Comment1], [Extent4].[DateCreated] AS [DateCreated], [Extent4].[DateLastActivity] AS [DateLastActivity], [Extent4].[DateLastLogin] AS [DateLastLogin], [Extent4].[DateLastPasswordChange] AS [DateLastPasswordChange], [Extent4].[Email] AS [Email], [Extent4].[Enabled] AS [Enabled], [Extent4].[PasswordHash] AS [PasswordHash], [Extent4].[PasswordSalt] AS [PasswordSalt], [Extent4].[ScreenName] AS [ScreenName], [Extent4].[Thumbnail] AS [Thumbnail1], [Extent4].[UserId] AS [UserId1], [Extent4].[UserName] AS [UserName] FROM [ProductReviews] AS [Extent1] INNER JOIN [Users] AS [Extent2] ON [Extent1].[UserId] = [Extent2].[UserId] LEFT OUTER JOIN [Products] AS [Extent3] ON [Extent1].[ProductId] = [Extent3].[Id] LEFT OUTER JOIN [Users] AS [Extent4] ON [Extent1].[UserId] = [Extent4].[UserId] WHERE N'615005822' = [Extent2].[UserId] or from d in productRepository.FindAllProducts() from dr in d.ProductReviews where dr.User.UserId == 'userid' orderby dr.CreatedTime select new ProductReviewInfo() { product = new SimpleProductInfo() { Id = d.Id, Name = d.Name, Thumbnail = d.Thumbnail, Rating = d.Rating }, Rating = dr.Rating, Comment = dr.Comment, UserId = dr.UserId, UserScreenName = dr.User.ScreenName, UserThumbnail = dr.User.Thumbnail, CreateTime = dr.CreatedTime }; SELECT [Extent1].[Id] AS [Id], [Extent1].[Name] AS [Name], [Extent1].[Thumbnail] AS [Thumbnail], [Extent1].[Rating] AS [Rating], [Extent2].[Rating] AS [Rating1], [Extent2].[Comment] AS [Comment], [Extent2].[UserId] AS [UserId], [Extent4].[ScreenName] AS [ScreenName], [Extent4].[Thumbnail] AS [Thumbnail1], [Extent2].[CreatedTime] AS [CreatedTime] FROM [Products] AS [Extent1] INNER JOIN [ProductReviews] AS [Extent2] ON [Extent1].[Id] = [Extent2].[ProductId] INNER JOIN [Users] AS [Extent3] ON [Extent2].[UserId] = [Extent3].[UserId] LEFT OUTER JOIN [Users] AS [Extent4] ON [Extent2].[UserId] = [Extent4].[UserId] WHERE N'userid' = [Extent3].[UserId] ORDER BY [Extent2].[CreatedTime] ASC [QUESTION 2]: Whats with the ugly outer joins?

  • Reading HttpRequest Body in REST WCF

    - by madness800
Hi All, I got a REST WCF Service running in .net 4 and I've tested the web service it is working and accepting HttpRequest I make to it. But I ran into a problem trying to access the HttpRequest body within the web service. I've tried sending random sizes of data appended on the HttpRequest using both Fiddler and my WinForm app and I can't seem to find any objects in runtime where I can find my request body is located. My initial instinct was to look in the HttpContext.Current.Request.InputStream but the length of that property is 0, so I tried looking in IncomingWebRequestContext that object doesn't even have a method nor properties to get the body of the HttpRequest. So my question is, is there actually a way to access the HttpRequest request body in WCF? PS: The data inside the request body is JSON strings and for response it would return the data inside response body as JSON string too.

  • Entity Framework - in model first, how do I get my EF classes to be based on the existing domain cla

    - by Greg
Hi, If I already have domain classes, and I want to be able persist them using EF via a model first approach how do I do this? For example do I go to the EF designer (in VS2010) and create the model and generate the classes, then go to these EF classes and somehow manually modify them? But then would there be an issue if I needed to change the model and re-create database TSQL from the model for updates? What's the easiest approach?

  • jQuery UI Autocomplete formating help, (I'm new to jQuery)

    - by brant
I can't seem to figure out how to add additional functionality to the basic jquery autocomplete. Returning the json data isn't the problem, it's how I am supposed to use the extra json data that confuses me. $(function() { $("#q").autocomplete({ source: "/a_complete.php?sport=<?=$sport?>", minLength: 2 }); }); Response data: [{"pos":"SG","url":"\/nba_player_news\/Kobe_Bryant","value":"Kobe Bryant"},{"pos":"C","url":"\/nba_player_news\/Patrick_O'Bryant","value":"Patrick O'Bryant"}] My goal is something like this: Kobe Bryant (SG) I've read what jqueryui autocomplete documentation has to say and I know i need to use formatItem and/or formatResult. I can't seem to put it all together to make this work as it should. I hope someone with a lot of patience finds the time to help guide me to where I need to go. :)

  • Anyone succeeded at injecting Interfaces into Entity Framework 4 Entities, using T4?

    - by Ciel
    Hello: POCO sort of leaves me wanting: (how can I say I use DI/IoC, if the Repository is not the only place that is creating the entities?)...hence my desire to lock it down, get rid of the temptation of newing up POCOs or EntityObjects anywhere in the code, and just allowing entity interfaces above the Repository/Factory layer. For a second there, I nearly thought I had it...was editing EF4's T4 in order to inject in an Interface def. Was going swimmingly, compiled and worked, until I got to the Associations... I wrapped them with a ICollection, and renamed the underlying original collection with a prefix of Wrapped. Unfortunately, when run, throws an error: //The Member 'WrappedSubExamples' in the CLR type 'XAct.App.Data.Model.EF4.Example' is not present in the conceptual model type 'XAct.App.Data.Model.Entity.Example'. var examples = context2.CreateObjectSet(); My T4 segment I used was (this may not work, as it's the longest code snippet I've ever posted here...sorry): #region Generic Property Abstraction <# if (navProperty.ToEndMember.RelationshipMultiplicity == RelationshipMultiplicity.Many) {#> //XAct.App Generic Wrapper: <#=code.SpaceAfter(NewModifier(navProperty))#><#=Accessibility.ForProperty(navProperty)#> ICollection<I<#=MultiSchemaEscape(navProperty.ToEndMember.GetEntityType(), code)#>> <#=code.Escape(navProperty)#> { get { if (_X<#=code.Escape(navProperty)# == null){ _X<#=code.Escape(navProperty)# = new WrappedCollection,<#=MultiSchemaEscape(navProperty.ToEndMember.GetEntityType(), code)#(this.<#=(navProperty.ToEndMember.RelationshipMultiplicity == RelationshipMultiplicity.Many)?"Wrapped":""#<#=code.Escape(navProperty)#); } return _X<#=code.Escape(navProperty)#; } } private ICollection _X<#=code.Escape(navProperty)#; <# } else { # <#=code.SpaceAfter(NewModifier(navProperty))#<#=Accessibility.ForProperty(navProperty)# I<#=MultiSchemaEscape(navProperty.ToEndMember.GetEntityType(), code)# <#=code.Escape(navProperty)# { get { return (I<#=code.Escape(navProperty)#)this.Wrapped<#=code.Escape(navProperty)#; } set { this.Wrapped<#=code.Escape(navProperty)# = value as <#=code.Escape(navProperty)#; } } <# } # #endregion which then wraps the original collection, renamed with the prefix 'Wrapped': /// <summary> /// <#=SummaryComment(navProperty)#> /// </summary><#=LongDescriptionCommentElement(navProperty, region.CurrentIndentLevel) #> [XmlIgnoreAttribute()] [SoapIgnoreAttribute()] [DataMemberAttribute()] [EdmRelationshipNavigationPropertyAttribute("<#=navProperty.RelationshipType.NamespaceName#>", "<#=navProperty.RelationshipType.Name#>", "<#=navProperty.ToEndMember.Name#>")] <# if (navProperty.ToEndMember.RelationshipMultiplicity == RelationshipMultiplicity.Many) { #> <#=code.SpaceAfter(NewModifier(navProperty))#><#=Accessibility.ForProperty(navProperty)#> EntityCollection<<#=MultiSchemaEscape(navProperty.ToEndMember.GetEntityType(), code)#>> Wrapped<#=code.Escape(navProperty)#> { <#=code.SpaceAfter(Accessibility.ForGetter(navProperty))#>get { return ((IEntityWithRelationships)this).RelationshipManager.GetRelatedCollection<<#=MultiSchemaEscape(navProperty.ToEndMember.GetEntityType(), code)#>>("<#=navProperty.RelationshipType.FullName#>", "<#=navProperty.ToEndMember.Name#>"); } <#=code.SpaceAfter(Accessibility.ForSetter(navProperty))#>set { if ((value != null)) { ((IEntityWithRelationships)this).RelationshipManager.InitializeRelatedCollection<<#=MultiSchemaEscape(navProperty.ToEndMember.GetEntityType(), code)#>>("<#=navProperty.RelationshipType.FullName#>", "<#=navProperty.ToEndMember.Name#>", value); } } } <# } else { #> <#=code.SpaceAfter(NewModifier(navProperty))#><#=Accessibility.ForProperty(navProperty)#> <#=MultiSchemaEscape(navProperty.ToEndMember.GetEntityType(), code)#> Wrapped<#=code.Escape(navProperty)#> { <#=code.SpaceAfter(Accessibility.ForGetter(navProperty))#>get { return ((IEntityWithRelationships)this).RelationshipManager.GetRelatedReference<<#=MultiSchemaEscape(navProperty.ToEndMember.GetEntityType(), code)#>>("<#=navProperty.RelationshipType.FullName#>", "<#=navProperty.ToEndMember.Name#>").Value; } <#=code.SpaceAfter(Accessibility.ForSetter(navProperty))#>set { ((IEntityWithRelationships)this).RelationshipManager.GetRelatedReference<<#=MultiSchemaEscape(navProperty.ToEndMember.GetEntityType(), code)#>>("<#=navProperty.RelationshipType.FullName#>", "<#=navProperty.ToEndMember.Name#>").Value = value; } } <# string refPropertyName = navProperty.Name + "Reference"; if (entity.Members.Any(m => m.Name == refPropertyName)) { // 6017 is the same error number that EntityClassGenerator uses.   • Still confuse parse JSON in GWT

    - by graybow
Please help meee. I create a project named 'tesdb3' in eclipse. I create the PHP side to access the database, and made the output as JSON.. I create the userdata.php in folder war. then I compile tesdb3 project. Folder tesdb3 and the userdata.php in war moved in local server(I use WAMP). I put the PHP in folder tesdb3. This is the result from my localhost/phpmyadmin/tesdb3/userdata.php [{"kode":"002","nama":"bambang gentolet"},{"kode":"012","nama":"Algiz"}] From that result I think the PHP side was working good. Then I create UserData.java as JSNI overlay like this: package com.tesdb3.client; import com.google.gwt.core.client.JavaScriptObject; class UserData extends JavaScriptObject{ protected UserData() {} public final native String getKode() /*-{ return this.kode; }-*/; public final native String getNama() /*-{ return this.nama; }-*/; public final String getFullData() { return getKode() + ":" + getNama(); } } Then Finally in the tesdb3.java: public class Tesdb3 implements EntryPoint { String url= "http://localhost/phpmyadmin/tesdb3/datauser.php"; private native JsArray<UserData> getuserdata(String json) /*-{ return eval(json); }-*/; public void LoadData() throws RequestException{ RequestBuilder builder = new RequestBuilder(RequestBuilder.GET, URL.encode(url)); builder.sendRequest(null, new RequestCallback(){ @Override public void onError(Request request, Throwable exception) { Window.alert("error " + exception); } public void onResponseReceived(Request request, Response response) { Window.alert("betul" + response.getText()); //data(getuserdata(response.getText())); } }); } public void data(JsArray<UserData> data){ for (int i = 0; i < data.length(); i++) { String lkode =data.get(i).getKode(); String lname =data.get(i).getNama(); Label l = new Label(lkode+" "+lname); tb.setWidget(i, 0, l); } RootPanel.get().add(new HTML("my data")); RootPanel.get().add(tb); } public void onModuleLoad() { try { LoadData(); } catch (RequestException e) { } } } The result just showing string "my data". And the Window.alert(response.getText()) showing nothing. Whyy?

  • Unidirectional One-to-Many Associations in Entity Framework 4?

    - by Eric J.
Does EF 4 support unidirectional one-to-many associations, as in: public class Parent { public int Id { get; set; } public string Something { get; set; } public List<Child> AllMyChildren { get; set; } } public class Child { public int Id { get; set; } public string Anotherthing { get; set; } // I don't want a back-reference to the Parent! // public int ParentId { get; set; } } When I try to compile my project with an association between Parent and Child where End2 Navigation is blank (because I unchecked the End2 Navigation Property checkbox in the Add Association dialog), I get Error 2027: No mapping specified for the following EntitySet/AssociationSet - Child.

  • How should I handle this Optimistic Concurrency error in this Entity Framework code, I have?

    - by Pure.Krome
Hi folks, I have the following pseduo code in some Repository Pattern project that uses EF4. public void Delete(int someId) { // 1. Load the entity for that Id. If there is none, then null. // 2. If entity != null, then DeleteObject(..); } Pretty simple but I'm getting a run-time error:- ConcurrencyException: Store, Update, Insert or Delete statement affected an unexpected number of rows (0). Now, this is what is happening :- Two instances of EF4 are running inthe app at the same time. Instance A calls delete. Instance B calls delete a nano second later. Instance A loads the entity. Instance B also loads the entity. Instance A now deletes that entity - cool bananas. Instance B tries to delete the entity, but it's already gone. As such, the no-count or what not is 0, when it expected 1 .. or something like that. Basically, it figured out that the item it is suppose to delete, didn't delete (because it happened a split sec ago). I'm not sure if this is like a race-condition or something. Anyways, is there any tricks I can do here so the 2nd call doesn't crash? I could make it into a stored procedure.. but I'm hoping to avoid that right now. Any ideas? I'm wondering If it's possible to lock that row (and that row only) when the select is called ... forcing Instance B to wait until the row lock has been relased. By that time, the row is deleted, so when Instance B does it's select, the data is not there .. so it will never delete.

  • What is the best way in assigning foreign key when using entity framework & LINQ to Entities?

    - by Abdel Olakara
Hi all, I need to know the best practice of creating an entity object and assigning the foreign key. Here is my scenario. I have a Product table with pid,name,unit_price etc.. I also have a Rating table with pid (foregin key),rate, votes etc... Currently i am doing the following to create the rating object: var prod = entities.Product.First(p => p.product_id == pid); prod.Rating.Load(); if (prod.Rating != null) { log.Info("Rating already exists!"); // set values and Calcuate the score } else { log.Info("New Rating!!!"); Rating rating = new Rating(); // set values and do inital calculation prod.Rating = rating; } entities.SaveChanges(); Even though this works fine, i would like to know the best practice in doing these kind of assignment. Thanks for your suggestions and info. Best Regards, Abdel Olakara

  • Is ADO.NET Entity framework database schema update possible ?

    - by fyasar
Hi All I'm working on proof of concept application like crm and i need your some advice. My application's data layer completely dynamic and run onto EF 3.5. When the user update the entity, change relation or add new column to the database, first i'm planning make for these with custom classes. After I rebuild my database model layer with new changes during the application runtime. And my model layer tie with tightly coupled to my project for easy reflecting model layer changes (It connected to my project via interfaces and loading onto to application domain in the runtime). I need to create dynamic entities, create entity relations and modify them during the runtime after that i need to create change database script for updating database schema. I know ADO.NET team says "we will be able to provide this property in EF 4.0", but i don't need to wait for them. How can i update database changes during the runtime via EF 3.5 ? For example, i need to create new entity or need to change some entity schema, add new properties or change property types after than how can apply these changes on the physical database schema ? Any ideas ?

  • Best method to compress JSON string in term of performance and compress radio

    - by Eric Yin
For a JSON string, contains all kinds of settings, numbers, string etc. Total JSON string fairly fall into 10k~50K range. I want to compress it before save to database. So I wonder which compress method should I choose, I am using c# 4, I know I can choose gzip and deflate but the compression radio is not good (although speed is good). More specific, compress can be a little slow (since only once) but should be small. Decompress should be lighting fast since decompress happens lots. Please give some advice.

  • Catch $.getJSON error

    - by Switz
I've been trying to figure this out for hours. I have a DYNAMIC youtube search, which I use Youtube's JSON api for. It works usually, but there are times that it won't find anything. Is there a way to figure out if it finds nothing, and then end the function because otherwise it stops the entire code. I tried jsonp, but that didn't seem to be correct. Somewhere I read that error catching is built into the newest jQuery getJSON, but I couldn't find it. The code is really tedious so I'd rather not post it unless it comes to that. I'd appreciate any help! Thanks guys. error showing that json didn't return anything jquery-1.4.4.min.js:32 TypeError: Result of expression 'j' [undefined] is not an object.

  • PHP / Zend Framework: Force prepend table name to column name in result array?

    - by Brian Lacy
I am using Zend_Db_Select currently to retrieve hierarchical data from several joined tables. I need to be able to convert this easily into an array. Short of using a switch statement and listing out all the columns individually in order to sort the data, my thought was that if I could get the table names auto-prepended to the keys in the result array, that would solve my problem. So considering the following (assembled) SQL: SELECT user.*, contact.* FROM user INNER JOIN contact ON contact.user_id = user.user_id I would normally get a result array like this: [username] => 'bob', [contact_id] => 5, [user_id] => 2, [firstname] => 'bob', [lastname] => 'larsen' But instead I want this: [user.user_id] => 2, [user.username] => 'bob', [contact.contact_id] => 5, [contact.firstname] => 'bob', [contact.lastname] => 'larsen' Does anyone have an idea how to achieve this? Thanks!

  • Entity Framework VS LINQ to SQL VS ADO.NET with stored procedures?

    - by BritishDeveloper
How would you rate each of them in terms of: Performance Speed of development Neat, intuitive, maintainable code Flexibility Overall I like my SQL and so have always been a die-hard fan of ADO.NET and stored procedures but I recently had a play with Linq to SQL and was blown away by how quickly I was writing out my DataAccess layer and have decided to spend some time really understanding either Linq to SQL or EF... or neither? I just want to check, that there isn't a great flaw in any of these technologies that would render my research time useless. E.g. performance is terrible, it's cool for simple apps but can only take you so far

  • Zend Framework-Do images, mp3s, scripts, etc, just go in public folder?

    - by Joel
I guess these are all questions that everyone must just know, because I'm not seeing this in the documentation :-D I understand that the public folder is the folder that the world has access to. I know it is the case with the css folder, but in migrating a traditional php website over, will my /images folder, /js folder /mp3s, etc Will those all just also be public folders that will be accessed via the layout or view.phtml pages? Thanks!
