• How to install downloaded Canon ScanGear

  I have newly installed Ubuntu 12.04. I have Canon MG6360 printer/scanner. I have successfully installed printer drivers and can print okay. Have downloaded MG6300 series ScanGear MP Ver. 2.00 for Linux (deb) from Canon but don't know how to install this from terminal. I apologise for having to ask such a basic question! Thanks. Later...I have extracted the files. Question appears: Do I want to run install.sh? I click 'run in terminal', and enter password. I don't know if it installed and don't know how to check. Scanner does not work or 'see' the PC. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web ICT: second draft published from WCAG2ICT Task Force - for public review

  Last Thursday the W3C published an updated Working Draft of Guidance on Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web Information and Communications Technologies. As I noted last July when the first draft was published, the motivation for this guidance comes from the Section 508 refresh draft, and also the European Mandate 376 draft, both of which seek to apply the WCAG 2.0 level A and AA Success Criteria to non-web ICT documents and software. This second Working Draft represents a major step forward in harmonization with the December 5th, 2012 Mandate 376 draft documents, including specifically Draft EN 301549 "European accessibility requirements for public procurement of ICT products and services". This work greatly increases the likelihood of harmonization between the European and American technical standards for accessibility, for web sites and web applications, non-web documents, and non-web software. As I noted last October at the European Policy Centre event: "The Accessibility Act – Ensuring access to goods and services across the EU", and again last month at the follow-up EPC event: "Accessibility - From European challenge to global opportunity", "There isn't a 'German Macular Degernation', a 'French Cerebral Palsy', an 'American Autism Spectrum Disorder'. Disabilities are part of the human condition. They’re not unique to any one country or geography – just like ICT. Even the built environment – phones, trains and cars – is the same worldwide. The definition of ‘accessible’ should be global – and the solutions should be too. Harmonization should be global, and not just EU-wide. It doesn’t make sense for the EU to have a different definition to the US or Japan." With these latest drafts from the W3C and Mandate 376 team, we've moved a major step forward toward that goal of a global "definition of 'accessible' ICT." I strongly encourage all interested parties to read the Call for Review, and to submit comments during the current review period, which runs through 15 February 2013. Comments should be sent to public-wcag2ict-comments-AT-w3.org. • Checker AI in visual basic not working [on hold]

  I am trying to a make checkers in visual basic with ai. I am using the minimax algorithm (or at least what I understand of it) and it works, except the ai is retarded and plays like it is trying to loose and I tried to switch around the min and the max but the results are IDENTICAL. I am pissed of and have been trying to fix it for over a week now, I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out here. I have 3 years experience of programming (in Java, only about of month of VB experience) and I always am able to solve all my errors on my own so I don't know why I can't get this to work. • JDeveloper and Upgrading Your JDK on Ubuntu

  One little gotcha, if you, as I did recently, upgrade your JDK on Ubuntu then you may have to make sure you reflect that change in a couple of places for JDeveloper to stay happy. Assuming that you've installed from the jar version of the JDeveloper installer, then the JDK that you specified at install time will be recorded in the .jdev_jdk file in your home directory.However, be aware that this is not the only reference to the absolute path of the JDK. When you run the embedded WebLogic for the first time then the .jdeveloper/system11.1.1.3.37.56.60/DefaultDomain/bin/startWebLogic.shscript will be created, and associated with that, the setDomainEnv.sh script in the same directory. So, if you do want to change the JDK location be sure to change this file as well. (or of course do everything with symbolic links)

• cd command not working anymore

  I just did two things : install scm_breeze and mercurial : git clone git://github.com/ndbroadbent/scm_breeze.git ~/.scm_breeze ~/.scm_breeze/install.sh sudo apt-get install mercurial And now my cd command seems to be gone : dys@dys-tour:~/prog> cd ~ bash: /home/dys : is a folder dys@dys-tour:~/prog> cd .. .. : command not found The terminals I opened before installing scm_breeze and mercurial are fine. The terminals I open now have the problem. I uninstalled scm_breeze, with no result. What can I do to diagnose the problem and fix it ?

• Unable to keep the connecting using a wireless bridge

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a dell inspiron desktop (core 2 duo) and am using wicd to manage my network/wifi. I've found that the WiFi card in the machine has trouble staying connected to my router (I believe this is a function of distance between the two), so I've taken an old Belkin F5d7231 wireless router and installed dd-wrt on it to use as a wireless bridge hoping that it will have better reception. I think everything up through the wireless bridge is working OK since I have no problems accessing the internet through it with my MacBook. The problem arises when I try to hook the ubuntu machine up to the wireless bridge. It will connect for a few minutes, but it will quickly disconnect without clear triggering event; it may be more likely to disconnect if there is a heavy traffic load going over it (could be something as simple as "cat big_text_file" in an ssh session). I've tried switching from dhclient to dhcpcd without much improvement. • Function inside .profile results in no log-in

  I've created a custom function in my .profile, and I've added right at the bottom, after my custom aliases : # custom functions function eclipse-gtk { cd ~/development/eclipse-juno ./eclipse_wb.sh & cd - } The function starts a custom version of my eclipse. After I've added it, because I didn't wanted to log-out/log-in, I've reloaded my profile with the command: . ~/.profile and then I've tested my function by calling eclipse-gtk and it worked without any issue. Today when I booted, I couldn't log in. After providing my password, in a few seconds I was back at the log-in screen. Dropping to command line using CTR + ALT + F1, I've commented out the function in my .profile and the log-in was possible without any issue. My question is, what did I do wrong when I wrote the function? And if there is something wrong, why did it work yesterday after reloading the profile. Thanks in advance. Using: Ubuntu 12.04

• Why doesn't Wolfram Workbench work on 64-bit Ubuntu?

  I have downloaded the shell script (Workbench_2.0.0_LINUX.sh), I have run it as root with it giving no complaints, relevant looking files have appeared in /usr/local/Wolfram/WolframWorkbench/2.0/ and it has created the executable "WolframWorkbench" in /usr/local/bin. However, when I run WolframWorkbench from terminal it spits out /usr/local/bin/WolframWorkbench: 46: exec: /usr/local/Wolfram/WolframWorkbench/2.0/WolframWorkbench: not found That file does indeed exist, and is executable. I have also tried running it directly, and I have also tried running the /usr/local/Wolfram/WolframWorkbench/2.0/Executables/WolframWorkbench too. Is there something I'm missing? (I am running Ubuntu 12.04 64bit with openjdk7)

• Updating a database connection password using a script

  An interesting customer requirement that I thought was worthy of sharing today. Thanks to James for the requirement and Bryan for the proposed solution and me for testing the solution and proving it works :0) A customers implementation of Sarbanes Oxley requires them to change all database account passwords every 90 days. This is scripted leveraging shell scripts today for most of their environments. But how can they manage the BI Publisher connections? Now, the customer is running 11g and therefore using weblogic on the middle tier, which is the first clue to Bryans proposed solution. To paraphrase and embellish Bryan's solution a little; why not use a JNDI connection from BIP to the database. Then employ the web logic scripting engine to make updates to the JNDI as needed? BIP is completely uninvolved and with a little 'timing' users will be completely unaware of the password updates i.e. change the password when reports are not being executed. Perfect! James immediately tracked down the WLST script that could be used here, http://middlewaremagic.com/weblogic/?p=4261 (thanks Ravish) Now it was just a case of testing the theory. Some steps: Create the JNDI connection in WLS Create the JNDI connection in BI Publisher pointing to the WLS connection Build new data models using or re-point data sources to use the JNDI connection. Create the WLST script to update the WLS JNDI password as needed. Test! Some details. Creating the JNDI connection in web logic is pretty straightforward. Log into hte console and look for Data Sources under the Services section of the home page and click it Click New >> Generic Datasource Give the connection a name. For the JNDI name, prefix it with 'jdbc/' so I have 'jdbc/localdb' - this name is important you'll need it on the BIP side. Select your db type - this will influence the drivers and information needed on the next page. Being a company man, Im using an Oracle db. Click Next Select the driver of choice, theres lots I know, you can read about them I just chose 'Oracle's Driver (Thin) for Instance connections; Versions 9.0.1 and later' Click Next >> Next Fill out the db name (SID), server, port, username to connect and password >> Next Test the config to ensure you can connect. >> Next Now you need to deploy the connection to your BI server, select it and click Next. You're done with the JNDI config. Creating the JNDI connection on the Publisher side is covered here. Just remember to the connection name you created in WLS e.g. 'jdbc/localdb' Not gonna tell you how to do this, go read the user guide :0) Suffice to say, it works. This requires a little reading around the subject to understand the scripting engine and how to execute scripts. Nicely covered here. However a bit of googlin' and I found an even easier way of running the script. ${ServerHome}/common/bin/wlst.sh updatepwd.py Where updatepwd.py is my script file, it can be in another directory. As part of the wlst.sh script your environment is set up for you so its very simple to execute. The nitty gritty: Need to take Ravish's script above and create a file with a .py extension. Its going to need some modification, as he explains on the web page, to make it work in your environment. I played around with it for a while but kept running into errors. The script as is, tries to loop through all of your connections and modify the user and passwords for each. Not quite what we are looking for. Remember our requirement is to just update the password for a given connection. I also found another issue with the script. WLS 10.x does not allow updates to passwords using clear type ie un-encrypted text while the server is in production mode. Its a bit much to set it back to developer mode bounce it, change the passwords and then bounce and then change back to production and bounce again. I have hardcoded the password into the file but you can pass it as a parameter as needed using the properties file method. Im not going to get into the detail of that here but its covered with an example here. Couple of points to note: 1. The change to the password requires a server bounce to get the changes picked up. You can add that to the shell script you will use to call the script above. 2. The script above needs to be run from the MW_HOME\user_projects\domains\bifoundation_domain directory to get the encryption libraries set correctly. My command to run the whole script was: d:\oracle\bi_mw\wlserver_10.3\common\bin\wlst.cmd updatepwd.py - where wlst.cmd is the scripting command line and updatepwd.py was my update password script above. I have not quite spoon fed everything you need to make it a robust script but at least you know you can do it and you can work out the rest I think :0)

• Importing a windows project into android using cocos2d-x

  What I am trying to do today is to import a full project to Android, but no tutorials are available for that that I have seen. My approach was to create a new android project, copy all the classes and resources in the folders and calling ./build_native.sh but I get an error because most of the files are not being included in the project. I tried opening the Android.mk and I can see why "LOCAL_SRC_FILES := AppDelegate.cpp \ HelloWorldScene.cpp" are the only files linked. Should I manually modify the make file or can it be automated by some way I don't know? Thank you. UPDATE: I manually added all files and headers to the make file and I get errors linking Box2D or cocosdenshion libraries.

• How to play .mp4 movies?

  I have a .mp4 movie (it's an .mp4 file, and the "video codec" is Xvid, and the "audio codec" is mp3) that I want to play, but when I try to open it in MPlayer, it says "The steam is encrypted and decryption is not supported." I tried to apply the answer from this question and this wiki page, but neither worked. Any suggestions? • How best to keep bumbling, non-technical managers at bay and still deliver good work?

  This question may be considered subjective (I got a warning) and be closed, but I will risk it, as I need some good advice/experience on this. I read the following at the 'About' page of Fog Creek Software, the company that Joel Spolsky founded and is CEO of: Back in the year 2000, the founders of Fog Creek, Joel Spolsky and Michael Pryor, were having trouble finding a place to work where programmers had decent working conditions and got an opportunity to do great work, without bumbling, non-technical managers getting in the way. Every high tech company claimed they wanted great programmers, but they wouldn’t put their money where their mouth was. It started with the physical environment (with dozens of cubicles jammed into a noisy, dark room, where the salespeople shouting on the phone make it impossible for developers to concentrate). But it went much deeper than that. Managers, terrified of change, treated any new idea as a bizarre virus to be quarantined. Napoleon-complex junior managers insisted that things be done exactly their way or you’re fired. Corporate Furniture Police writhed in agony when anyone taped up a movie poster in their cubicle. Disorganization was so rampant that even if the ideas were good, it would have been impossible to make a product out of them. Inexperienced managers practiced hit-and-run management, issuing stern orders on exactly how to do things without sticking around to see the farcical results of their fiats. And worst of all, the MBA-types in charge thought that coding was a support function, basically a fancy form of typing. A blunt truth about most of today's big software companies! Unfortunately not every developer is as gutsy (or lucky, may I say?) as Joel Spolsky! So my question is: How best to work with such managers, keep them at bay and still deliver great work?

  I'm completely new to Ubuntu I downloaded and unpacked a tar.gz package, after extraction, it is said in its documentation : "type ./configure --disable-gts" But when i run this command alone it tells me "Permission Denied" error. Then i tried to use "sh ./configure --disable-gts" insted, but this time i faced this error: configure: error: cannot run C compiled programs. If you meant to cross compile, use `--host'. How can i overcome these two problems? (I mean permission and compile error) I'm just a rookie and i need urgent help. Thanx

• No longer able to boot stuck in busybox shell

  I've installed win 7 and ubuntu 11.04. After a storm killed the power. i'm unable to boot. I'm stuck in the busybox shell (ash). Here's what happens when i boot: Bios loads Grub displays option to load: ubuntu ubuntu recovery memtest another memtest option win7 win 7 recovery I load Ubuntu This cause it to load and i see no normal ubuntu screen just the busybox shell I try loading ubuntu via fsck -l; and it returns me a /bin/sh not found error. I load windows 7 and i'm unable to boot. I get a blue screen of death I then load ubuntu recovery and i don't have any luck either. Any ideas where to go from here?

• How to drastically improve code coverage?

  I'm tasked with getting a legacy application under unit test. First some background about the application: It's a 600k LOC Java RCP code base with these major problems massive code duplication no encapsulation, most private data is accessible from outside, some of the business data also made singletons so it's not just changeable from outside but also from everywhere. no business model, business data is stored in Object[] and double[][], so no OO. There is a good regression test suite and an efficient QA team is testing and finding bugs. I know the techniques how to get it under test from classic books, e.g. Michael Feathers, but that's too slow. As there is a working regression test system I'm not afraid to aggressively refactor the system to allow unit tests to be written. How should I start to attack the problem to get some coverage quickly, so I'm able to show progress to management (and in fact to start earning from safety net of JUnit tests)? I do not want to employ tools to generate regression test suites, e.g. AgitarOne, because these tests do not test if something is correct.

I made a perl and bash script to make a backup of my firewalls and tranfers via tftp #!/bin/sh perl /deploy/scripts/backups/10.160.23.1.pl > /dev/null 2>&1 perl /deploy/scripts/backups/10.160.23.2.pl > /dev/null 2>&1 so this tranfers the file to my tftp directory /tftpboot/ ls -l /tftpboot/ total 532 -rw-rw-rw- 1 tftp tftp 209977 jun 6 14:01 10.160.23.1_20140606.cfg -rw-rw-rw- 1 tftp tftp 329548 jun 6 14:02 10.160.23.2_20140606.cfg my questions is how to improve my script to moving this files dynamically to another folder based on the name (in this case on the ip address) for example: 10.160.23.1_20140606.cfg move to /deploy/backups/10.160.23.1/ is that the answer to this surely was on Google, but wanted to know if there was a particular solution to this request and also learn how to do :) Thanks!

• Can't install Oracle J2EE due to "An internal Error has occurred"

  I am trying to install Oracle JavaEE 6 SDK with Glassfish on Ubuntu 12.04 with Java SDK 7. I have downloaded java_ee_sdk-6u4-jdk7-linux-x64.sh already, but when I run it on terminal, the wizard appears, and after few steps, I get an Error Message Dialog: An internal Error has occurred. Please contact your system administrator... null. And, the terminal is showing something like WARNING: Could not process a navigation event for command=AC_NEXT [Command=AC_NEXT Error=null ] What can I do? How can I install J2EE/Glassfish under linux x64?
