• Writing drivers for a printer?

  My goal is to be able to fax 20 page pdf documents for free. I've looked online, and there are some free fax services, but all of them have their limits. I do have an old fax machine, but the documents that need to be faxed are on the computer, and to print them would be far from free. Unfortunately, the only way to send a fax with the machine is by scanning it. What's strange is that it can scan to the computer and print from it, but it won't fax from it... :(. Is it possible to write something (preferably C#, but it's going to take some learning anyway) that will allow me to send a fax from the computer? I have very little software experience, and none in anything like this, so I have no idea where to start. If it is possible, where can I find all the information needed to write the program?

• Theme sometimes fails to load on some UI elements

  I have no idea if this error as been seen before or not, I have looked around and found people saying they have errors that sound the same but none of the fixes work, my issue is that sometimes the theme does not load some parts of the UI, (the buttons and icons in this case) but the rest is just fine (window bars e.t.c) so I have no idea what the issue is, it works just fine for the most part but sometimes has this bug, if you restart the system it tends to fix it for some time so its hard to see how it could be a graphic card error, however I am very new to linux systems so I may be missing someting very fundamental here. • Auto-provisioning hosting via API

  I've built a sort of 'software as a service' website package for a specific industry. What I am looking to do is create a payment gateway that allows users to subscribe-- and once the subscription is active, it would auto-provision a web hosting plan for them (a shared account on a server, probably in a chroot'd environment so each user would be insulated from others). Ideally it would auto-install a CMS as well. Tons of web hosts provide a simple reseller plan where I could manually create all the users' hosting accounts-- but so far none that I've found allow you to do this via API. Is there a way to do this short of writing custom shell scripts on something like an EC2 platform? I'd prefer to leave all the server maintenance in the hands of dedicated support staff rather than having to manually handle updates, backups, etc. Thanks for any tips.

• /etc/crypttab not working

  I used the Disk Utility to create an encrypted volume on an external drive. When I click the Unlock Volume button in that program, it mounts the drive for me. Now, I want to automate this process so that it will happen at boot-up. When I run sudo cryptsetup luksUUID /dev/sdb1, I get this: ca709269-1e3e-4e9e-9e08-7248f0e6c5a6 So, I create /etc/crypttab like this: backup_drive UUID=ca709269-1e3e-4e9e-9e08-7248f0e6c5a6 none And I added this line to /etc/fstab: /dev/mapper/backup_drive /mnt/backup ext3 default 0 2 When I reboot, Ubuntu tells me that the device is not available to map, so I tell it to skip it. It appears that the /etc/crypttab is not getting run correctly. How can I debug this?

• Unable to install Steam 64bit - Wrong architecture (Lubuntu 12.04)

  I'm on a new install of Lubuntu 12.04 on an Acer Aspire 5534 (specifications here, tl;dr: AMD dual-core 64bit) trying to install steam_latest.deb from the Steam website. When I open gdebi to install, it tells me that it's uninstallable because it's for a i386 architecture. I've tried installing ia32-libs (installed, no success), gdebi --add-architecture i386 (with and without --force, command unknown). This is all I've found to fix the problem, but none of it has worked for me. Any suggestions are welcome, thanks for your time.

• Player rewards in games where you normally have nothing to purchase

  In many games there are rewards such as gold coins, points, etc. When these rewards can be used to purchase in-game items, it motivates the player to keep playing. Let's say we have an online game, poker, Yatzy etc. What type of reward would keep the players playing if there are few in-game items available to buy, or none at all? What I am looking for is a reward system that entices the players to play more in a game environment where there isn't that much to purchase. For example, there isn't much to buy in a poker or Yatzy game with the gold you win. I guess having some titles that are added to the userid is one way, or maybe purchasing a logo for the id... A leaderboard is another. Any thoughts on this?

• compiz problems - no effects work, despite the fact that they seem to be properly configured

  I've looked through some posts about compiz and either haven't found the answer, or haven't understood what's been said. Could someone help me out? I installed ubuntu 12.04 through windows 7 (so I can dual boot) and installed compiz and set up the settings I want (hotcorners etc). For a while it seemed like it was going fine, but then I restarted the laptop, none of the compiz settings were working and the auto-launcher wasn't even coming up when I passed cursor over it. The computer is still usable, when I 'dash home' the auto-launcher appears, and I can tab through windows but yeh... the auto-launcher and hotcorners I set up through compiz aren't working at all. Any ideas? Oh, whilst I'm super grateful for any help I can get, I'd really appreciate it if you could keep any instructions as basic as possible. I'm a bit new at this... THANK YOU!

  If you have to support some older Winforms you might like to remember this.  When opening a MessageBox to display that the user entered incorrect information, if you are doing so from a dialog, catch the DialogResult of the MessageBox and then set  this.DialogResult = DialogResult.None; to prevent the dialog from closing if you want the user to try again.  Otherwise, it will close the dialog box and return to the section of code that called it.Note:  You do not have to catch the DialogResult from the MessageBox.  You can still set this after the return from the call to the MessageBox.  Just make sure to do either but exiting the body of the dialog itself.

• Replace Android on HP Slate 21?

  I want to replace Android with Ubuntu for Androids on my new HP Slate 21. As far as I known none has ever tried it yet and I would appreciate if Ask Ubuntu would help out here. Would I need to unlock & root first my machine? (In which case I will need a second machine plugged to my Slate...) Or can I just insert the bootable usb with the distribution I need and go from there as in a normal non-optical drive situation? Also where can I find the downloadable file/image of Ubuntu for Android as describe here? I see no link with the name on it.. Should I just download the normal dis and choose from options when installing it?

• Menu to let me choose OS to run in a dual boot machine

  I recently re-imaged my Dell PC to dual-install Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. The dual-boot was a success, since I was able to start whichever OS I wanted. Now, I installed some software (the OpenJDK package) on the Ubuntu side of the PC. Upon restarting Ubuntu, I unfortunately lost the ability to choose the OS that I wanted to run (i.e., Ubuntu). Ordinarily, I'd expect to: 1. Hit the power button 2. A menu (Grub?) shows up listing all OSs installed in the PC (namely, Win7 and Ubuntu) 3. Choose which OS I want and hit enter. bingo. The problem is that I don't see that menu (step 2 above). Instead, windows automatically starts, even when I hit F12 to see the boot options, none of which I understand. Your help would be great! However, this site is hosted in Europe with an offshore hosting company that says clear in its TOS that they will not do anything if they get a DMCA complain, giving freedom to clients to host whatever copyrighted material they want. Is EUCD the correct way to deal with this? Where can I find an example of a EUCD complain or even a form? DMCA has all types of examples and places to get a sample form, but EUCD has none.

• Touchpad doesn't work after logging in

  The touchpad of my laptop fails to work soon after I login to Ubuntu. I;ve gone through several threads in forums regarding the same and have tried out : gconftool -set boolean ... command I;ve even tried to reboot the system in recovery mode, also I;ve unchecked the System - Preferences - enable touchpad while key type and restarted.   I've interviewed a number of candidates for salaried positions. I was recently informed that we are hiring a consultant for a few months to help us develop a native iPhone application. We are a .NET shop and none of us have any experience with iPhone development. I've also heard rumors that we are planning to hire more consultants in the future to help develop on other various platforms. How should I interview these consultants, considering that I have no experience with this type of development? Without regards to platform specific questions, what are the things I need to keep in mind when interviewing consultants? Normally when I interview candidates, I'll ask questions that I know the answer to. I would never ask a candidate something that I don't know how to answer. Since this is a different situation, what do I need to ask in order to make sure they are subject matter experts in their respective fields? Is it appropriate to ask specific questions that we'll need to eventually solve during the interview?

  For this weekend's GiveCamp project, my team has been tasked with adding some functionality to an existing Joomla-powered website for a non-profit. A certain type of user will login, and have access to a personal area where they can upload files, check for messages, see tasks that have been assigned, etc. Each user would have their own area. They would not be creating pages, and their information would only be visible to themselves (or a site-administrator, of course. No sort of weird HIPAA privacy involved). None of us have worked with Joomla before, but we'd like to help this non-profit. We're not sure if we're searching using the wrong terms, or if we're just not finding it. Is such a solution possible in Joomla? And/or are we better off building some standalone solution that interfaces with the same mySQL database as Joomla?

  I have an application that needs to store client data, and part of that is some data about their employer as well. Assuming that a client can only have one employer, and that the chance of people having identical employer data is slim to none, which schema would make more sense to use? However, since a client will always have an employer, I'm also not seeing any real benefits to seperating them out, and it would make querying data about clients more complex. Is there any benefit / reason for creating two tables in a situation like this one instead of one?

• 12.04 cannot boot from USB

  The HP Pavilion g6 notebook is unable to boot from bootable USB stick created with Linux Live USB Creator. I was able to boot other systems using the same pendrive. I have changed the boot priority using F10. When I restarted, it didn't ask for any message like Press any key to boot from When I press F19, and selected the pendrive from the available options to boot from, while restarting it gives me a message: error while trying to boot selected boot image Though I looked into the possible suggestions here, none of them worked. Looking for any help? EDIT: I was able to fix the first issue, i'e ubuntu could be installed as secure boot option in the bios was not allowing the pendrive or cd/dvd to be detected. Now once i have successfully installed ubuntu 12.04, after the restart i was unable to find it in the os menu for selection and windows8 loaded by default Ubuntu version: 12.04

There are a lot of really SEO optimized sites and I can't tell which of them are legit. I'm looking for something that will be easy and quick to implement, and none of my colleagues have any recommendations. What APIs have you used (preferably with PHP) that have gotten this job done? Which services have been the most pleasant to deal with, both technically and support-wise? Update: Will be sending primarily (probably solely) in the US.
