  Hi, When I ran the uptime on my MacBookPro machine I got the following result: Last login: Thu Jun 3 14:43:40 on ttys000 Osama-Gamal-MBP-2:~ iOsama$ uptime 14:49 up 7 days, 20:10, 2 users, load averages: 0.29 0.24 0.24 Why it lists that there are two users? is it normal? and who is the other user, is it the root user or what? PS: I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.3

• Practically expected transfer rates for sdhc class 6

  I went and bought an expensive SanDisk Extreme III SDHC 8GB class 6 chip. However when I dump data from the card to the machine via USB 2.0 cable, its only getting 5.0 MB/second maximum according to Windows 7 disk explorer. It still can take up to 20 minutes to dump the card when its near full. This is so far below the rated 20MB/s transfer speed I can't believe it. Is this normal or might I have a defective chip?

• Samba4 advice for production use

  I have an old Samba 3 + LDAP server installed that needs to be rebuilt. I'm weighting my options, and Windows Server seems too expensive at the moment, and Samba 4 appeared to be a nice option, coupled with the last Bind 9 that can dynamically add the computers to the DNS. I have about 30 workstations, so I still consider it a small network. My questions are: Is Samba 4 stable enough for production? It seems as if the Samba team is too cautious on when to call their version final, or even beta, as compared with other open source projects. What Linux distribution would you recommend to set it up? I usually use Ubuntu Server, but may use another one if installing / maintaining Samba 4 is better on that one.

I see these days I can pick blade enclosures and servers up for relatively low cost and see the term blade and vm mentioned quite a lot. So my question - how would a blade setup work with wmware - is the whole enclosure seen as one big machine and yhr more blades you add the more computing power/resources you get in VMware - or are the just x number of seperate servers? • How Can I Disable CRL Checks For A Windows 2008 App Using WinHTTP?

  I've got a Windows 2008 server with an app that uses WinHTTP for SSL sessions. The server is isolated from the internet but still tries to connect to CRL distribution points, which leads to some timeouts. Since the server has no access to the internet whatsoever, I'd like to disable CRL checks. I had a similar issue on a Windows 2003 server and resolved it by adjusting the following registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Http/Parameters/SslBindiongInfo/0.0.0.0:443/DefaultSslCertCheckMode (DWORD=1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Rasman/PPP/EAP/13/NoRevocationCheck (DWORD = 1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Rasman/PPP/EAP/13/NoRootRevocationCheck (DWORD = 1) That doesn't seem to be working in 2008. I've also tried disabling the CRL check from IE under Tools Internet Options Advanced. Is there anything else I can try here?

• Apache 2.2 Windows XP Uninstall Doesn't Remove All Files

  Hello, I am trying to uninstall Apache 2.2 on Windows XP. The original installation was from the binary msi distribution. The uninstall function of the msi ran successfully, but it failed to remove a couple of folders: C:\Apache2.2\conf C:\Apache2.2\logs I am unable to remove these folders manually because they contain files for which I do not have ownership. And this is the source of my confusion: why if I installed the program do I not have permission to remove it? To be clear, I do not have local admin rights (nor can I request them), yet the files in these two remaining folders are owned by Administrator. How is it that Administrator created these files (and how can I possibly remove them)? Thanks, -aj

• How can I limit CloudFront downloads

  I'm looking to use Amazon's CloudFront to host some content in the near future. Currently, I'm keeping it very simple and I'm just uploading my content to S3 and then making a distribution available via Cloudfront. However, because I have a limited budget, I'd like to be able to limit the number of downloads or the money spent on bandwidth. As far as I can see, I can't set any quotas or budgets like you can in Google's App Engine, so I'm looking for another way of doing this. Has anyone had any experience doing this? One approach I'm thinking of is having to place a webserver with redirects in between, but that kind of defeats the simplicity of CF for me.

• Apple - best way to clean the mighty mouse?

  As much as I love Apple products' designs, I still don't like the mighty mouse. The scrolling keeps stopping in between very frequently. I tried the instructions provided on Apple's site and it does make the scrolling smooth but only momentarily. Isn't there any way to open it up and clean like a normal mouse? Or any other way to clean it better? Thanks.

• How to refresh open source software pkg manager on oldish OpenSolaris?

  I'm being presented with an OpenSolaris vps, actually a Solaris Container, which is based on SXCE snv_121 and is active since mid 2007: the good old Sun days, IIRC even before the Indiana stuff! For various reasons the system itself can't be rebuilt/upgraded but we can do whatever we want with the additional package manager on it. My Solaris skills and especially knowledge of the free package managers ecosystem is a bit rusty so I don't know what I can actually use while keeping the somewhat oldish base system. Currently there is pkg-get using some older Blastwave mirror, it has been used to install things such as Apache2, PHP, Python, Nagios. I would like to remove all the old rusty stuff and all of Blastwave, and start fresh with some newer package distribution. Can the current Blastwave system be used on that snv_121? Is there any better alternative still compatible with that system (eg. OpenCSW or anything else) ?

• In Windows 7, is it possible to do "runas" administrator *without* using the gui?

  I'm aware of the various options for setting the "run as administrator" flag, and for opening an Admin console Windows. But what if I have a normal console window and I want to run a command as admin? The 'runas' program doesn't seem to have an option that says "please don't show me some popup that I have to click on". What I really want is something like sudo for Windows.

  Using Mail.app in Mac OS X (10.6.3) I'm seeing apparently random sort order when sending a email to a group. Not a major issue but you'd think it be alphabetical?!? To reproduce: Compose New Message in Mail.app Type in a group name from your Address Book The addresses from that group will populate the To: field in apparently random fashion FYI- You'd think that choosing Edit Distribution List… in Address Book would let you sort the list...but nope! Anyone know what/how to set this sort order?

• FAT32: setting a mixed-case volume label on Windows?

  When I try to set the volume label for my FAT32 USB drive the normal way (using Windows Explorer or Disk Management), the filesystem just makes the label uppercase when applying it. Is it possible at all to set a mixed-case volume label on the drive on Windows? I know there may be no real reason for me to do that, but I'd really like to know.

• Ubuntu 12, limit the resolution to 640x480

  How can I set and limit the resolution in Ubuntu 12 to 640x480 There's not much in the xorg.conf file anymore, so I'm guessing this is no longer the place to do it? I can't do it using the GUI either because it doesn't show me the 640x480 option. While setting the resolution the computer is connected to a normal screen but later it will be connected to a screen that only supports 640x480 and doesn't report its supported modes to the computer. • Fastest booting desktop linux distro? [closed]

  I'm currently running Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop and I'm very happy with it. But boot times aren't great... So I'd like to have a second distribution on my hard disc that I can boot to quickly check my email and stuff like that. It really only needs to run firefox and a terminal. Ext4 support would be a plus since my Ubuntu partition is ext4. In the next couple of hours I will try xPUD and DSL. Any other suggestions? EDIT: Tried xpud, hangs on boot.

  I am using tsocks on my Ubuntu machine and I have it all set up so that if I run wget -q -O - checkip.dyndns.org|sed -e 's/.*Current IP Address: //' -e 's/<.*$//' in my normal shell I get my real IP address, and if I run tsocks wget -q -O - checkip.dyndns.org|sed -e 's/.*Current IP Address: //' -e 's/<.*$//' I get another IP address like I should. My question is how do I make the tsocks command return with a different 'different address'; in other words establish a new identity.

• RSH between servers not working

  I have two servers: one CentOS 5.8 & one Solaris 10. Both are joined to my workplace AD domain via PBIS-Open. A user will log into the linux server & run an application which issues commands over RSH to the solaris server. Some commands are also run on the linux server, so both are needed. Due to the application these servers are being used for (proprietary GE software), the software on the linux server needs to be able to issue rsh commands to the solaris server on behalf of the user (the user just runs a script & the rest is automatic). However, rsh is not working for the domain users. It does work for a local user, so I believe I have the necessary trust settings between the two servers correct. However, I can rlogin as a domain user from the linux server to the solaris server. SSH works too (how I wish I could use it). • SqlServer2005 Enterprise Fast Recovery, SqlAgent Availability, and Replication

  I have a database under SqlServer2005 Enterprise 64bit sp3, that is in phase 3 of 3 of recovery after a reboot without normal shutdown. It looks like with fast Recovery, the database became available when recovery moved into phase 3. However, it seems (based on message in SqlAgent log), that SqlAgent is "started" but not available to run jobs until recovery completes. I have other databases on the same server that are transactional publications. It seems to me that if I let users update the published databases, transactions will start to build up in the log, but won't be moved to the distribution database or onto the subscribers because SqlAgent isn't running jobs. I've noticed my server (lamp set up) being slow at times, but by the time I log in as root and run a PS command, everything may have returned to normal. It would be great to review a log of what resources different parts of the server consumed.

  Hi, I'm using postfix to relay mail to Exchange 2010. Here is my config: relayhost = [smtp.exchange.2010] smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/relay_passwd smtp_sasl_security_options = #smtp_sasl_mechanism_filter = ntlm (/etc/postfix/relay_passwd contains login information of some accounts on Exchange) With this configuration I can relay email to Exchange. The problem is: the message send from Postfix has header: X-MS-Exchange-Organization-AuthAs: Anonymous and the message is treated like unAuthenicated message on Exchange system (i.e when sending to distribution group require senders are authenicated, I received error: #550 5.7.1 RESOLVER.RST.AuthRequired; authentication required ##rfc822;[email protected]). I using Outlook with the same account as in Postfix and it can send without problem. The different I realized between two case is: Outlook send with NTLM auth mech, Postfix using LOGIN mech. Any idea?

• Offline Outlook 2007 global address book slow to update

  Outlook 2007 talking to an Exchange 2007 server. Usual set-up of personal contacts and a site wide global address book. Distribution lists are often created by IT in the global address book but it sometimes takes days for them to appear in the local offline copy. Performing a manual download of the address book doesn't help. Problem doesn't occur with non-offline mode of Outlook 2007. Any ideas? Server or client side issue? Cheers, Rob.

• iTunes Album Artwork not available in all Sizes

  I used iTunes and everything worked fine until today. When I try to display Large / Medium artwork, not all the artworks are displayed. However, when I try to display the small artworks, everything works. Large (buggy): Small (normal): Is there a way to fix this? Tech Specs: iTunes on Windows 7 x64, v. 10.3.1. All the artworks are stored locally on my hard drive (.jpg files (i added them manually)).
