• Persistent warning message about "initWithDelegate"!

  Hi This is not an actual Xcode error message, it is a warning that has been haunting me for a long time. I have found no way of removing it and I think I maybe have overstepped some unwritten naming convention rule. If I build a class, most often extending NSObject, whose only purpose is to do some task and report back when it has data, I often give it a convenience constructor like "initWithDelegate". The first time I did this in my current project was for a class called ISWebservice which has a protocol like this: @protocol ISWebserviceDelegate @optional - (void) serviceFailed:(NSError*) error; - (void) serviceSuccess:(NSArray*) data; @required @end Declared in my ISWebservice.h interface, right below my import statements. I have other classes that uses a convenience constructor named "initWithDelegate". E.g. "InternetConnectionLost.h", this class does not however have its methods as optional, there are no @optional @required tags in the declaration, i.e. they are all required. Now my warning pops up every time I instantiate one of these Classes with convenience constructors written later than the ISWebservice, so when utilizing the "InternetConnectionLost" class, even though the entire Class owning the "InternetConnectionLost" object has nothing to do with the "ISWebservice" Class, no imports, methods being called, no nothing, the warning goes: 'ClassOwningInternetConnectionLost' does not implement the 'ISWebserviceDelegate' protocol I does not break anything, crash at runtime or do me any harm, but it has begun to bug me as I near release. Also, because several classes use the "initWithDelegate" constructor naming, I have 18 of these warnings in my build results and I am getting uncertain if I did something wrong, being fairly new at this language. Hope someone can shed a little light on this warning, thank you:)

• Issue with Facebook JS API, revokeAuthorization

  I am trying to integrate FB connect into our user profile screen. Although, I'm having an issue with FB.ApiClient.revokeAuthorization. http://pastie.org/921942 The basic problem is that I revoke the auth at line 44 after the user clicks the disconnect button. After that, all subsequent API calls don't have a valid session to even check user status. I've tried wrapping blocks in a FB.Connect.forceSessionRefresh block, but then the code will never be called at all. I'm not sure what the proper workflow should be for this purpose. Right now it's basically... User arrives at profile NOT connected to the application. User clicks on the connect button. Once connected, DOM manipulation occurs to hide the connect button and add in a disconnect button. User clicks on the disconnect button. User's authorization to the application is revoked and (it seems) the API session to the FB server is invalidated. DOM manipulation occurs to hide the disconnect button and readd the connect button. User clicks on the connect button. Once connected, the FB.Connect.get_loggedInUser() don't return the actual user.

• GridView: How can I get rid of extra space from my GirdView object?

  Hello, I'm writing an application for Android phones for Human vs. Human chess play over the internet. I was looking at some tutorials, to learn how to develop Android applications and found a very nice example of making galleries (it was a GridView usage example for making a gallery about dogs) and the idea came to draw the chess table using a GridView, because the example project also handled the point & click event and I intended to use the same event in the same way, but for a different purpose. The game works well (currently it's a hotseat version), however, I'm really frustrated by the fact that whenever I rotate the screen of the phone, my GridView gets hysterical and puts some empty space in my chess table between the columns. I realized that the cause of this is that the GridView's width is the same as its parent's and the GridView tries to fill its parent in with, but there should (and probably is) be a simple solution to get rid of this problem. However, after a full day of researching, I haven't found any clue to help me to make a perfect drawing about my chess table without a negative side effect in functionality. The chess table looks fine if the phone is in Portrait mode, but in Landscape mode it's far from nice. • Getting a variable into another class through properties or button tags with Iphone SDK?

  Hello. I have been pounding my head against a wall trying to figure out what I think is a simple thing to do, but I have, so far, been unable to figure it out with the iPhone SDK. I have a view with 4 buttons. When I push the buttons, I have another view called and come up to take over the screen. I want to have a simple variable passed from the old view to the new view. The purpose of this is to know what button was pressed out of the four identical ones. (trying to get an int value of 1 through 4) Here is what I have tried so far: I initially tried to call the variable from the class itself. My understanding was that my new view was only sitting on top of the old view, so it should not have been released. I could not get access to the variable as the variable was said to not be declared. I then tried to create a method that would return the int value. Again, the view class was not seen and was being declared as a "first use" of it. I then attempted to follow another similar post on here that suggested to try and send the button tag number to some part of the new view. I attempted to do this by setting the new views button title but I still cannot figure out a way to code it without coming up with errors. I am just looking for what method would be the best for me to pursue. I have no problem going back and reading the books on Objective-C, but I'm just trying to figure out which way I should concentrate on. Thank you for any insight.

• Do overlays work correctly in Emacs for Windows?

  I'm using Flymake on C# code, emacs v22.2.1 on Windows. The Flymake stuff has been working well for me. For those who don't know, you can read an overview of flymake, but the quick story is that flymake repeatedly builds the source file you are currently working on in the background, for the purpose of doing syntax checking. It then highlights the compiler warnings and erros in the current buffer. Flymake didn't work for C# initially, but I "monkey-patched it" and it works nicely now. If you edit C# in emacs, I highly recommend using flymake. The only problem I have is with the UI. Flymake highlights the errors and warnings nicely, and then inserts "overlays" with the full error or warning text. IF I hover the mouse pointer over the highlighted line in code, the overlay pops up. But as you can see, the overlay is truncated, and it doesn't display correctly. Flymake seems to be doing the right thing, it's the overlay part that seems broken. Do overlays work correctly in emacs for Windows? Where do I look to fix this?

• WPF Collapsed Grid not Styling

  So, I have a grid inside a listbox. The purpose is that when the listboxitem is selected, I want the grid to show, having the selected item expand to show more detail information. I set up a style trigger for this and it works great, except for one thing: the labels and textblocks styles are unapplied on the grid. I'm assuming this has something to do with the default state of the listboxitem being collapsed, so wpf skips the styles, I was hoping it would put them on when selected fired, but it doesn't. • Can I use a *.tag from another *.tag file in the same /WEB-INF/tags folder?

  Hello, I am trying to refactor my JSP code so that a small conditional test condition gets reused through a *.tag file. There are some big parts of my UI that depend on the value of a two-state property of an object present in the request. Let's say the property is 'gender' and the object is of type Person. Like I said, I would like to simplify & centralize the test on the gender property using a tag. For this purpose, I created two tag files: /WEB-INF/tags/if-male.tag /WEB-INF/tags/if-female.tag Now, I have another tiny spot that gets repeated in all over my application; let's say is the salutation to my site user. With this idea, I created a tag like this: /WEB-INF/tags/salutation.tag As you can imagine, I am trying to use the if-male/if-female test within the salutation.tag file to output 'Mrs.' or 'Mr.' like this: <%@ tag body-content="empty" %> <%@ taglib prefix="g" uri="/WEB-INF/tags" %> <g:if-male> Mr. </g:if-male> <g:if-female> Mrs. </g:if-female> Is the use of the if-male/if-female tags legal within the salutation.tag file? I have tried with such arrangement, but it looks like the JDeveloper 10.1.3.4 compiler gets confused and cannot deal with the salutation.tag tag invoking the other two tags in the same 'library' (folder under /WEB-INF/tags). The reference works perfectly in Jetty 6 and it looks like it works as well if I deploy the application to OC4J directly without relying on JDeveloper to pre-compile all my JSPs. • Form values in a list item

  Here is the site mock-up I'm working on for my job: http://dev.arm.gov/~noensie/dqhands/cgi-bin/explorer. I'm still a novice in web developing and I need help with placing form values in a list item to pass on to another page. I'd rather not go in great detail the purpose of this website, but in terms of its basic use, select the parameters in the middle column for a request and add it to the list on the right column by pressing on "add request" button when it appears. After the list have been populated, a user would submit the selected requests, which will direct them to another page based on the requests selected (or added to the list, same thing). That last sentence is where I'm having a problem. Right now, each of request in the list in the right column are <li> elements and I assign them attribute values that needed to be passed on to the next page. I tried inserting a hidden input with same values, but I'm still not sure how to utilize that; I'm not even sure using the hidden input is the correct way. Also the "submit request" button is located outside the <form> block. I was going to utilize javascript and jQuery to enable the button to serialize the values in the <form> block, but I don't know quite how to do that. Go ahead and take a look at my javascript code (index.js) and slay me, or, I mean, my code. It's still pretty elementary and short (~260 lines, that's short right?). I will take any help for this problem (as the matter of fact, if you see any other problems or a better way of implementation of something, go ahead and mention that too); tips, advice, code samples, or whatever else you can contribute, it will be greatly appreciated. • TeamCity with TFS - workspace problems

  Hi, We have been using CC.NET as our CI server for a month or so now, which has worked ok with TFS. In the config we were able to specify the TFS server, username, password, project and workspace which is all good. Now we are moving over to TeamCity mainly because it just seams more solid and is much nicer to use. The problem is getting it work with TFS. For the purpose of this, both the workspace and machine name are "BuildMachine", username is "BuildUser" TFS project is "$/Project/Dev/Website" I seam to have set it up correctly, I think, as when testing the connection it is successful. When I run a build I get a TFS error: "RunBuildException when running build stage UpdateSourcesFromServer." It goes on to say: "No matched workspaces were found. Will recreate workspace and perofming clean checkout." It then tries to create a new workspace something like this: TeamCity-S-sqa9qe2aulx22gz4rzkogl5kr/BuildUser It tries to set up some mappings and then fails because: "The working folder C:\ is already in use by the workspace BuildMachine;BuildUser on computer BuildMachine". This seams ok as this is the workspace that CC.net was using, and c:\project\dev\website is the path to the project. The problem is, why didn't TeamCity pick this up and use this workspace? Why does it try to create its own new one? Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks

  I'm currently brainstorming over the idea how to upgrade a program while it is running. (Not while debugging, a "production" system.) But one thing that is required for it, is to actually submit the changed source code or compiled byte code into the running process. Pseudo Code var method = typeof(MyClass).GetMethod("Method1"); var content = //get it from a database (bytecode or source code) SELECT content FROM methods WHERE id=? AND version=? method.SetContent(content); At first, I want to achieve the system to work without the complexity of object-orientation. That leads to the following requirements: change source code or byte code of function drop functions add new functions change the signature of a function With .NET (and others) I could inject a class via an IoC and could thus change the source code. But the loading would be cumbersome, because everything has to be in an Assembly or created via Emit. Maybe with Java this would be easier? The whole ClassLoader is replacable, I think. With JavaScript I could achieve many of the goals. Simply eval a new function (MyMethod_V25) and assign it to MyClass.prototype.MyMethod. I think one can also drop functions somehow with "del" Which general-purpose platform can handle such things?

  This little project / problem came out of left field for me. Hoping someone can help me here. I have some rough ideas but I am sure (or at least I hope) a simple, fairly efficient solution exists. I need to form pairs that have not previously meet. The pool of individuals will slowly change over time. For the purposes of pairing, (A & B) and (B & A) constitute the same pair. The history of previous pairings is maintained. For the purpose of the problem, assume an even number of individuals. For each meeting (collection of pairs) and individual will only pair up once. Is there an algorithm that will allow us to form these pairs? Ideally something better than just ordering the pairs in a random order, generating pairings and then checking against the history of previous pairings. In general, randomness within the pairing is ok.

  Hye Guys, my question is the following, i'm working with different databases, all contain information about 1000+ companies, a company is defined by its ticker code (the short version of the name( Ford as F) usually seen on stock quotation boards). Aside from the ticker code to merge on I also have to merge on the time, I used month as a count variable throughout my time series. The final purpose is to have a regression in the kind of Y(jt) = c + X(jt) +X1(jt) etc with j = company (ticker) and t = time (month). So imagine I have 2 databases, one which is the base database with variables such as Tickers, months, beta's of a company (risk measure) etc and a second database which has an extra variable (let's say market capitalisation). What I want to do then is to merge these 2 databases based on the ticker and the month. Example: Base database: Ticker __ Month __ Betas AA __ 4 __ 1.2 BB __ 8 __ 1.18 Second database: Ticker __ Month __ MCAP AA __ 4 __ 8542 BB __ 6 __ 1245 Then after merge I would like to have something like this: Ticker __ Month _ Betas ___ MCAP AA __ 4 _ 1.2 ___ 8542 So all observations that do not match BOTH date and ticker have to be dropped, I'm sure this is possible, just can't find the right type of code. • Can't Install libcurl PHP on Ubuntu Linux

  I am trying to use the new facebook api and it requires libcurl PHP. I used sudo apt-get install php5-curl sudo apachectl -k restart And it didn't work. I get the same error and the phpinfo() page says nothing about libcurl. The source of this problem is probably that I built some of the tools from source (apache2, php), but then I got bored so installed a lot of the extensions with the package manager. But I'm not exactly how to go about diagnosing the point of failure. The apt-get install for curl definitely worked, and can be found in /usr/lib/php5/20060613/curl.so I think a lot of my confusion stems from not knowing which files go where, and what purpose they have. • Why is curl in Ruby slower than command-line curl?

  I am trying to download more than 1m pages (URLs ending by a sequence ID). I have implemented kind of multi-purpose download manager with configurable number of download threads and one processing thread. The downloader downloads files in batches: curl = Curl::Easy.new batch_urls.each { |url_info| curl.url = url_info[:url] curl.perform file = File.new(url_info[:file], "wb") file << curl.body_str file.close # ... some other stuff } I have tried to download 8000 pages sample. When using the code above, I get 1000 in 2 minutes. When I write all URLs into a file and do in shell: cat list | xargs curl I gen all 8000 pages in two minutes. Thing is, I need it to have it in ruby code, because there is other monitoring and processing code. I have tried: Curl::Multi - it is somehow faster, but misses 50-90% of files (does not download them and gives no reason/code) multiple threads with Curl::Easy - around the same speed as single threaded Why is reused Curl::Easy slower than subsequent command line curl calls and how can I make it faster? Or what I am doing wrong? I would prefer to fix my download manager code than to make downloading for this case in a different way. Before this, I was calling command-line wget which I provided with a file with list of URLs. Howerver, not all errors were handled, also it was not possible to specify output file for each URL separately when using URL list. Now it seems to me that the best way would be to use multiple threads with system call to 'curl' command. But why when I can use directly Curl in Ruby? • Problems when handling orientation changes

  Hi all, I need to handle orientation changes in my Android application. For this purpose I decided to use OrientationEventListener convenience class. But his callback method is given somewhat strange behavior. My application starts in the portrait mode and then eventually switches to the lanscape one. I have some custom code executing in the callback onOrientationChanged method that provides some additional UI handling logic - it has a few calls to findViewById. What is strange is that when switching back from landscape to portrait mode onOrientationChanged callback is called twice, and what's even worse - the second call is dealing with bad Context - findViewById method starts returning null. These calls are made right from the MainThread @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); listener = new OrientationListener(); } @Override protected void onResume() { super.onResume(); // enabling listening listener.enable(); } @Override protected void onPause() { super.onPause(); // disabling listening listener.disable(); } I've replicated the same behavior with a dummy Activity without any logic except for one that deals with orientation hadling. • What is the best way to get an audio file duration in Android?

  Hi! I'm using a SoundPool [ 1 ] to play audio clips in my app. All is fine but I need to know when the clip playback has finished. At the moment I track it in my app by obtaining the duration of each clip using a MediaPlayer [ 2 ] instance. That works fine but it looks wasteful to load each file twice, just to get the duration. I could roughly calculate the duration myself knowing the length of the file (available from the AssetFileDescriptor [ 3 ]) but I'd still need to know the sample rate and the number of channels. I see two potential solutions to that problem: Figuring out when a clip has finished playing (doesn't seem to be possible with SoundClip). Having a class which could load just the header of an audio file and give me the sample rate/number of channels (and, ideally, the sample count to get the exact duration). Any suggestions?   After working for several weeks with a half dozen different branches and merges, on both my laptop and work and my desktop at home, my history has gotten a bit convoluted. For example, I just did a fetch, then merged master with origin/master. Now, when I do git show-branches, the output looks like this: ! [login] Changed domain name. ! I would like to clean this up with a git rebase. I created a new branch, rebase-master, for this purpose, and on this branch tried git rebase <common-ancestor>. However, I have to resolve many conflicts, and the end result on branch rebase-master no longer matches the corresponding version on master, which has already been tested and works! I thought I saw a solution to this somewhere but can't find it anymore. Does anyone know how to do this? Or will these convoluted ref names go away when I start deleting un-needed branches that I have already merged with? I am the sole developer on this project, so there is no one else who will be affected.

• What are practical guidelines for evaluating a language's "Turing Completeness"?

  I've read "what-is-turing-complete" and the wikipedia page, but I'm less interested in a formal proof than in the practical implications of being Turing Complete. What I'm actually trying to decide is if the toy language I've just designed could be used as a general-purpose language. I know I can prove it is if I can write a Turing machine with it. But I don't want to go through that exercise until I'm fairly certain of success. Is there a minimum set of features without which Turing Completeness is impossible? Is there a set of features which virtually guarantees completeness? (My guess is that conditional branching and a readable/writeable memory store will get me most of the way there) EDIT: I think I've gone off on a tangent by saying "Turing Complete". I'm trying to guess with reasonable confidence that a newly invented language with a certain feature set (or alternately, a VM with a certain instruction set) would be able to compute anything worth computing. I know proving you can building a Turing machine with it is one way, but not the only way. What I was hoping for was a set of guidelines like: "if it can do X,Y,and Z, it can probably do anything".

  In the near future I am attempting to design a media server as a personal project. MY first consideration to get the project underway is architecture, it will certainly be web based but more specifically than that I am looking for suggestions on the database design. So far I am considering something like the following, where I am using [] to represent a table, the first text is the table name to give an idea of purpose and the items within {} would be fields of the table. Also not, fid is functional id referencing some other table. [Item {id, value/name, description, link, type}] - this could be any entity, single song or whole music album, game, movie - almost see this as a recursive relation, ie. a song is an item but an album that song is part of is also an item or for example a tv season is an item, with multiple items being tv episodes [Type {id, fid, mime type, etc}] - file type specific information - could identify how code handles streaming/sending this item to a user [Location {id, fid, path to file?}] [Users {id, username, email, password, ...? }] - user account information [UAC {id, fid, acess level}] - i almost feel its more flexible to seperate access control permissions form the user accounts themselves [ItemLog {id, fid, fid2, timestamp}] - fid for user id, and fid2 for item id - this way we know what user access what when [UserLog {id, fid, timestamp}] -both are logs for access, whether login or last item access [Quota {id, fid, cap}] - some sort of way to throttle users from queing up the entire site and letting it download ... Suggestions or comments are welcome as the hope is that this project will be a open source project once some code is laid out.

  In Monads for natural language semantics, Chung-Chieh Shan shows how monads can be used to give a nicely uniform restatement of the standard accounts of some different kinds of natural language phenomena (interrogatives, focus, intensionality, and quantification). He defines two composition operations, A_M and A'_M, that are useful for this purpose. The first is simply ap. In the powerset monad ap is non-deterministic function application, which is useful for handling the semantics of interrogatives; in the reader monad it corresponds to the usual analysis of extensional composition; etc. This makes sense. The secondary composition operation, however, has a type signature that just looks bizarre to me: (<?>) :: (Monad m) => m (m a -> b) -> m a -> m b (Shan calls it A'_M, but I'll call it <?> here.) The definition is what you'd expect from the types; it corresponds pretty closely to ap: g <?> x = g >>= \h -> return $ h x I think I can understand how this does what it's supposed to in the context of the paper (handle question-taking verbs for interrogatives, serve as intensional composition, etc.). What it does isn't terribly complicated, but it's a bit odd to see it play such a central role here, since it's not an idiom I've seen in Haskell before. Nothing useful comes up on Hoogle for either m (m a -> b) -> m a -> m b or m (a -> b) -> a -> m b. Does this look familiar to anyone from other contexts? Have you ever written this function?

• What does flushing thread local memory to global memory mean?

  Hi, I am aware that the purpose of volatile variables in Java is that writes to such variables are immediately visible to other threads. I am also aware that one of the effects of a synchronized block is to flush thread-local memory to global memory. I have never fully understood the references to 'thread-local' memory in this context. I understand that data which only exists on the stack is thread-local, but when talking about objects on the heap my understanding becomes hazy. I was hoping that to get comments on the following points: When executing on a machine with multiple processors, does flushing thread-local memory simply refer to the flushing of the CPU cache into RAM? When executing on a uniprocessor machine, does this mean anything at all? If it is possible for the heap to have the same variable at two different memory locations (each accessed by a different thread), under what circumstances would this arise? What implications does this have to garbage collection? How aggressively do VMs do this kind of thing? Overall, I think am trying to understand whether thread-local means memory that is physically accessible by only one CPU or if there is logical thread-local heap partitioning done by the VM? Any links to presentations or documentation would be immensely helpful. I have spent time researching this, and although I have found lots of nice literature, I haven't been able to satisfy my curiosity regarding the different situations & definitions of thread-local memory.   My website currently working in ASP.NET 1.1 Old Process In our database we have huge amount of data stored for a decoding purpose. We have to update this huge set of data table each week(Data is supplied from a vendor). In our website (in asp.net 1.1) we query our database to decode information. New process Now instead of storing data in our database and query them, we want to replace this through the web service, AS now the vendor is supplying us a DLL, which will give us the decoded information. Information on the DLL provided by the vendor The DLL provided, can only be added in 4.0 sites. SO that also impleies that i can not directly add the dll to my 1.1 site. This DLL is exposing certain methods, we simply have to add the DLL refernce in our web service and call the method and fetch the needed information. Thus we will not have to store those information in our database. So which type of web service I should go for (asmx OR WCF) that will use the DLLs provided by vendor to fetch the decoded information ?? Flexibility i am looking for in the web service are: It can be consumed from asp.net 1.1 site directly and also using jQuery ajax. It can be consumed from other web services running on the server. It can be consumed from some windows services running from the server. NOTE : Moreover we have a plan to migrate our website from asp.net 1.1 to 4.0 version in future.So it should be that much supportive for future upgrade.

• 2 Mutually exclusive RadioButton "Lists"

  I think this has to be THE most frustrating thing I've ever done in web forms. Yet one would think it would be the easiest of all things in the world to do. That is this: I need 2 separate lists of radiobuttons on my .aspx page. One set allows a customer to select an option. The other set does also but for a different purpose. But only one set can have a selected radiobutton. Ok I've tried this using 2 asp.net Radiobuttonlists controls on the same page. Got around the nasty bug with GroupName (asp.net assigns the control's uniqueID which prevents the groupname from ever working because now, 2 radiobuttonlists can't have the same groupname for all their radiobuttons because each radiobuttonlist has a different uniqueID thus the bug assigns the unique ID as the name attribute when the buttons are rendered. since the name sets are different, they are not mutually exclusive). Anyway, so I created that custom RadioButtonListcontrol and fixed that groupname problem. But when ended up happening is when I went to put 2 instances of my new custom radiobuttonlist control on my .aspx page, all was swell until I noticed that every time I checked for radiobuttonlist1.SelectedValue or radiobuttonlist2.SelectedValue (did not matter which I was checking) the value always spit back string.empty and i was not able to figure out why (see http://forums.asp.net/t/1401117.aspx). Ok onto the third try tonight and into the break of dawn (no sleep). I tried to instead just scrap trying to use 2 custom radiobuttonlists altogether because of that string.empty issue and try to spit out 2 sets of radiobuttonlists via using 2 asp.net repeaters and a standard input HTML tag inside. Got that working. Ok but the 2 lists still are not mutually exclusive. I can select a value in the first set of radiobuttons from repeater1 and same goes for repeater2. I cannot for the life of me get the "sets" to be mutually exclusive sets of radiobuttons.
