• cannot find vcvarsall.bat when runnning a pyhton script

  hello all, i am working on vista, and using python 2.6.4. i am using a software which uses a python script. but then i bumped into the message "cannot find vcvarsall.bat". so i installed visual c++ 2010. still the file is not found though it is there. my guess (a very uneducated one...) is that somewhere the path is wrong, because i also have an old visual 2008 (pretty empty) folder. since i have little idea in programming i have no idea where to make the changes for the new path. do i change something in the registery or in the script. i would be happy if somebody could help (preferably in lamen terms). thanx. • Setting up Elgg SMTP

  I am new to Elgg. I installed v1.7/ Right now, our newly registered users are not receiving activation email. I need to change SMTP settings and have Elgg use a relay server and not our company email server. The hosting company authorized me to use such relay. Now, I guess I have to edit some php file, somewhere, and type email server address. Can someone tell me how to change SMTP settings (and, perhaps those other settings you find in the initial setup page) ?

• Building XUL app a-la SongBird

  Hi, I've started exploring XUL Runner as a potential tool for an upcoming app. I can get some good examples running using the command line xulrunner-bin myapp. How can compile it all in a native looking application, like SongBird does. I understand SongBird packages the entire xul runtime with it, and I'm happy with that. I'm just wondering is there are any tool I can use to compile my xul project as a standalone app? Any Mac and/or PC hint much appreciated! EDIT: I guess what I'm looking for is a way to generate a Mac and/or PC XUL stub application (but not an installer). Is there something like that? cheers Ben

• How can I flush the output of disp in Octave?

  I have a program in Octave that has a loop - running a function with various parameters, not something that I can turn into matrices. At the beginning of each iteration I print the current parameters using disp. The first times I ran it I had a brazillion warnings, and then I also got these prints. Now that I cleaned them up, I no longer see them. My guess is that they're stuck in a buffer, and I'll see them when the program ends or the buffer fills. Is there any way to force a flush of the print buffer so that I can see my prints?

  Hi everybody, Pretty new to Entity Framework I must admit, but I simply cannot believe that there is no built-in solution for this problem. Let's say I create an EntityCommand: EntityCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand(); cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text; cmd.CommandText = commandText; And let's say the the commandText is something like this: SELECT sp.UserName, sp.Rights FROM EntityContext.Users as sp WHERE sp.UserName=@UserName Now it would be really neat if the Parameters collection of cmd could be automatically filled. The framework should obviously know the types etc. but I guess that's simply not how it works beneath. The problem is that the commandText is configurable on run-time, and I must show some GUI that asks for values of the parameters. Any idea on how this could be accomplished? • Apache mod rewrite rules to Zeus rewrite rules

  Hi, This morning I wanted to move my development website online (in a protected folder), but I figured out that our host (on a shared server) does not use apache mod_rewrite but Zeus rules. I've never heard about that before but it seems that apache rules could be automatically converted via a command line, but as you can guess I have no such access on the server. So, do you know any online coverter from Apache rules to Zeus ones? (I tried google but found nothing). Or could someone translate these simple rules with his server: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . index.php [L] It should normaly be something like: match URL into $ with ^[^\/]*\.html$ if matched then set URL = index.php endif But it just doesn't do anything, just the annoying 404 error page.   Hi i have a error like " dbFileName cannot be opened because it is version 655. This server supports version 612 and earlier. Does anyone know where to find sdl-config? I guess I can build SDL from source, but why should I have to, when there exist pre-built packages?

  I'm trying to create a simple login window with the very common 'Remember me' functionality. The login validation is done AJAX style, thus the browser won't remember my input. My approach is to use the built-in state functionality, but how to use it confuses me. • Changing UIImageView animation speed

  I am using the UIImageView to animate a bunch of images. I know that I can change the speed by altering animationDuration, but that doesn't seem to take effect until the animation is restarted. My problem is that beside not really wanting to have to restart the animation as this limits me to only being able to change the speed once per cycle, there also doesn't seem to be a way to find out what frame is currently being shown and I would therefore have to rely on a timer to "guess" which one it is. So my question is whether there is a way to change the speed without restarting the animation and if not is there some way I could avoid the aforementioned problem? I'm not too keen to write my own animation class, but may end up having to if there isn't a nicer solution.

  hi, I'm loading an external js file in the header of my html document and I have 2 questions about it: 1) I've added alert("ok"); in my external file but I cannot see any message. I guess because this file is loaded before the page is completed... or something like this (in the header), right ? 2) Then I added the jQuery code: $(document).ready( function() { alert("ok"); }); but still no signal of life... what am I doing wrong ? thanks

  Dears, I am now making some RESTful web service with MySQL database. I used NetBeans to create the resources of RESTful service with MySQL, and now I can now using GET and POST/PUT to list and add/modify data entities in the MySQL server. Currently, I wish to make some calculations right after a client makes the POST activities, then the posted data with calculated results will be inserted into the MySQL database. I am very new to this, I guess I need to add some functions and call them to calculate but I don't know where and how to do that : ( Could any one help me on this issue? • Is there a super simple List / ListAdapter example out there for android

  I have a web service that returns a super simple list of objects MyObject[] data = webServiceCall(); MyObject has 1 field i want to display, "Name" (i.e. data[0].Name ) How can i turn this into an activity that lists just the name of these objects in a scrollable listActivity in android. I am getting really confused with Cursors and am not sure if I need Cursors and I"m not sure what kind of adapter to implement (baseAdapter, SimpleAdapter etc) So i guess i'm looking for three things, the activity , the adapter and the layout.xml Just trying to figure this android stuff out, definately a noob here

• SQLite3-ruby extremely slow under 1.9.1?

  I decided to upgrade my server to Ruby 1.9.1, and a lot of things are indeed much faster. However, I have a process that dumps a database to sqlite, and it's become glacially slow. What used to take 30 seconds now takes upwards of 10 minutes. The code does several create table statements, and then lots of inserts. The insert statements nearly all use placeholders (?), so SQLite is doing the heavy lifting of binding the parameters. In short, I can't see why this particular usage has slowed down so much. Does anyone know of any problems that have caused it? I'm using sqlite3-ruby (1.2.5), and I'm hoping that someone has encountered this and profiled it. If not, I guess I'm going to learn how to profile ruby code :)

• Dynamically load nib for iPhone/iPad within view controller

  Hello I have converted an iPhone application using the wizard like thing in XCode into a universal app. It builds fine but obviously looks a bit rubbish in some areas :) I need to load nibs according to which device is being used. I dont wish to create my view controllers using initWithNib as I already have code to create the controllers with some data (initWithMyLovelyData) which doesnt do anything to do with nib loading. I know to find out the device you use UI_USER_INTERFACE_IDIOT() so I tried overriding the initWithNibName within the actual view controllers themselves, assuming they get called internally somehow. But it's not working as I guess I am unsure of the syntax. I have tried if(ipad..) self = [super initWithNibName:@"MyIpadNib" bundle:nibBundleOrNil]; And that doesnt work :/ EDIT - I know I have massively edited this, made my question a bit more specific after doing some more research - apologies!

  The definition of AudioBufferList looks weird to me… i guess my C is not so good struct AudioBufferList { UInt32 mNumberBuffers; AudioBuffer mBuffers[kVariableLengthArray]; }; typedef struct AudioBufferList AudioBufferList; Why AudioBuffer mBuffers[kVariableLengthArray]; and not AudioBuffer *mBuffers; ? kVariableLengthArray appears to be == 1. Eh? I think i have it working but would appreciate it if anyone could set me straight.

  hi, i hope you guys know about webim a.k.a mibew messenger. I know only java, jsp and no idea about php except for some basics. Anyways, i ran this app in my apache2.2 local server. Everything works superb! But if i change my db to a virtual machine and give its address in the config.php (previously i had used localhost), in the visitors page, i get timeout, reconnecting. Login has no prob, so my guess is db connection is fine. I even changed the default page refresh time from 2 to 10. Nothing happens. Still same thing. You guys have any idea?

• Does it make sense to use a NSFetchedResultsController without an UITableViewController? How are the

  I mean... could I also just create a plain old UIViewController and then set up a UITableView myself, plus an NSFetchedResultsController? How much do UITableViewController and NSFetchedResultsController interact with eachother? As far as I see it, UITableViewController is NOT by default already adopting the NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate protocol. It almost looks like if UITableViewController has been developed without knowing about NSFetchedResultsController. Probably they even did that before developing FRC. Anyways, just a raw guess because the UITableViewController lacks of mentioning FRC at all. So the only thing I see in UITableViewController is that it is already the delegate for a UITableView by adopting the protocol, and it sets up the UITableView instance for me and assigns it internally to it's tableView property. Is that the whole magic of UITableViewController? (note: the nsfetchedresultscontrolle tag is not a typo. SO has a limit for the num of chars...too bad for that missing r, that's why I avoided this tag in my other buch of questions like the plague)

• Python web devlopment framework for python 3.1 user

  I have been learning python for some time now. While starting this "learning python" endeavor I decided to learn the latest and greatest 3.1 version of python. I regret this decision now because I wanted to try my hands on some of the python web development frameworks & it looks like many of them does not support 3.1 yet & it looks like it might take them years to support the new version of Python especially Django and TurboGears. This is really disappointing. Therefore, SO users, do you have any recommendation for a web framework for me that runs on 3.1 and supports some of the modern (I guess I will never learn ;-)) web framework features like MVC/ORM/URL Routing/Caching etc. Many thanks for your response.

• How to debug applications using COM interfaces?

  I' building an application using C# which will use CATIA COM modules. When I import the COM inside my c# project, I think that Visual C# express generates the Interop automagically for me. All of this works correctly. However, when I try to debug the application and use watches during runtime, every object is a System.__ComObject and I cannot get their "real" value. Is there a way to tell the debugger the types of my COM objects? The goal is to get more familiar with this new API I don't know really well. Sometimes its rather hard to guess the correct types for everything since the interface hierarchy is quite deep

• Unable to Push source code to Bzr/Bazaar

  I am having issues pushing my codes into my Bazaar repository. It worked earlier for my first commit but not it does not work at all. Everytime I try to push my codes, I get this exception Error while executing push [Error 5] Access is denied: 'c:\\users\\benjam~1.won\\appdata\\local\\temp\\tmpj2hcal.pag' Any idea how I resolve this? I have even deleted the repo and .git folder and tried again but I keep getting this error regardless of the branch I guess. • Android: Changing LinearLayout in a widget.

  Hello all, I have this really annoying problem: In my widget, i would like to change the background by code. I noticed on the Google doc than I can easily change the background of an Imageview: remoteViews.setImageViewResource(R.id.my_iv, R.drawable.my_bg); Ok, too easy, i want to change now the Linear layout.. What I read about the remoteview id that I can change a Bitmap, Int, Bool, String, etc... but not a drawable. So i guess i cannot use: remoteViews.setBitmap(R.id.my_ll,"setBackgroundDrawable",BitmapFactory.decodeResource(context.getResources(), R.drawablemy_bg)); I am totally disapointed and tried a last idea: views.setInt(R.id.my_ll,"setBackgroundResource",R.drawable.my_bg); But The logcat told me: android.widget.RemoteViews$ActionException:view: android.widget.LinearLayout can't use method with RemoteViews: setBackgroundResource(int) I am totally lost and I really don't know what to do...   Hello, I am using datamapper in a ruby application and I'm facing a problem I do not understand. I have a Appartment model and a Location model. An appartment is at a given location and several appartments can be at the same location. This typically described a 1-n relationship (I guess :-) ) My feeeling is that in the Appartement sql table I need a location_id but I do not want any Appartment pointers within the Location table. For me, Location should live on its own and should not reference appartment. In the Appartement ruby class, I have added: has n, Location but it then creates an appartment_id within the Location ruby class, which I do not want. Would you have any clue ? Thanks a lot, Luc

  I'm working on a OpenGL project that I would like to port to embedded systems that support OpenGL|ES. Since OpenGL|ES is a subset of OpenGL how hard would it be to compile my OpenGL application on an embedded system? (Assuming that my OpenGL code is in the limits of OpenGL|ES) I guess what I'm wondering is: is it possible to dircetly wrap my OpenGL calls with MACROS to make it compatible with OpenGL|ES API call names? Are there any calls specific to OpenGL|ES that I would have to implement? Sorry, if I'm not clear. Thank you.

• POJO's versus Cursors in Android

  I usually tend to define the model layer of my apps using POJO's, such as Article, Comment, etc. I was about to implement an AlphabetIndexer in the adapter of one of my ListViews. Right now this adapter accepts a Collection of Articles, which I normally get from my wrapper around an SQLiteDatabase. The signature of the AlphabetIndexer constructer is as follows: public AlphabetIndexer (Cursor cursor, int sortedColumnIndex, CharSequence alphabet) Since this doesn't accept a Collection or something similar, just a Cursor, it got me wondering: maybe I shouldn't be creating objects for my model, and just use the Cursors returned from the database? So the question is, I guess: what should I do, represent data with Collections of POJO's, or just work with Cursors throughout my app? Any input?
