  I hope this question is clear enough -- if not let me know :) What API would I use when I want to write a procedure at runtime and then just run it eventually at low priority while continuing to do the important stuff right now? Example: link checker 1. I write a blog post with links represented by Link objects. I publish the post. 2. Eventually (at very low priority) the system gets around to fetching the URL of each Link object to make sure it's not broken and indicates that in a property of the Link object. 3. When a user visits my blog post, the render code that turns Link objects into HTML knows whether the links have been checked. I'm assuming there's a very general purpose API for doing this kind of "eventually/low priority" stuff.

• Is there a lightweight multipart/form-data parser in C or C++?

  I'm looking at integrating multipart form-data parsing in a web server module so that I can relieve backend web applications (often written in dynamic languages) from parsing the multipart data themselves. The multipart grammar (RFC 2046) looks non-trivial and if I implement it by hand a lot of things can go wrong. Is there already a good, lightweight multipart/form-data parser written in C or C++? I'm looking for one with no external dependencies other than the C or C++ standard library. I don't need email attachment handling or buffered I/O classes or a portability runtime or whatever, just multipart/form-data parsing. Things that I've considered: GMime - depends on glib, so no go. libapreq - too large, depends on APR, badly documented, no unit tests. I've also looked at writing a parser with Ragel, but I can't figure out how to do it because the grammar is not static: the boundary can change arbitrarily.

• Groovy: stub typed reference

  Hi, I have a Groovy class similar to class MyClass { Foo foo } Under certain circumstances I don't want to initialize foo and want to stub out all the calls to it. Any methods that return a value should do nothing. I could do it like this: Foo.metaClass.method1 = {param -> } Foo.metaClass.method2 = { -> } Foo.metaClass.method3 = {param1, param2 -> } While this will work, it has a couple of problems Tedious and long-winded, particularly if Foo has a lot of methods This will stub out calls to any instance of Foo (not just foo) Although Groovy provides a StubFor class, if I do this: this.foo = new groovy.mock.interceptor.StubFor(Foo) I get a ClassCastException at runtime. Although this would work if I could redefine foo as: def foo But for reasons I won't go into here, I can't do that. Thanks, Don

• Open an Access database and run one of its Macros from Excel

  From Excel, I need to open an Access database and run one of the database's macros. I'm using Excel and Access 2007. Here is my code in Excel: Sub accessMacro() Dim appAccess As New Access.Application Set appAccess = Access.Application appAccess.OpenCurrentDatabase "C:\blah.mdb" appAccess.Visible = True appAccess.DoCmd.RunMacro "RunQueries.RunQueries" appAccess.CloseCurrentDatabase End Sub In the Access Database, there is a procedure named RunQueries in a module named RunQueries. Each time I run this, I get the following error: Runtime error '2485': Microsoft Access Office can't find the object 'RunQueries.' I have also tried: appAccess.DoCmd.RunMacro "RunQueries" and I get the same errors message. Any idea how to do this? By the way, I could go into a long explanation about why I need to do this, but let me just say that I've already argued against it, and I have to do it this way (meaning, I have to use Excel as a frontend to open several Access dbs and run their macros).

• "dynamic" keyword and JSON data

  An action method in my ASP.NET MVC2 application returns a JsonResult object and in my unit test I would like to check that the returned JSON object indeed contains the expected values. I tried this: 1. dynamic json = ((JsonResult)myActionResult).Data; 2. Assert.AreEqual(JsonMessagesHelper.ErrorLevel.ERROR.ToString(), json.ErrorLevel); But I get a RuntimeBinderException "'object' does not contain a definition for 'ErrorLevel'". However, when I place a breakpoint on line 2 and inspect the json dynamic variable (see picture below), it obviously does contain the ErrorLevel string and it has the expected value, so if the runtime binder wasn't playing funny the test would pass. What am I not getting? What am I doing wrong and how can I fix this? How can I make the assertion pass?

  I'm simply trying to edit a spreadsheet that has text already written into to change the text to be blank. It runs, completes and the spreadsheet is unchanged. I don't know why.

• Windows Azure - Microsoft.IdentityModel not found

  I installed WIF runtime and SDK on my machine. I added Microsoft.IdentityModel.dll to my azure web application and locally everything is running great. I build simple web application which use Azure AppFabric Access control. I follow azure labs for that and as I told, local everything is great. When I published my web application to Azure, I'm getting following error : Unable to find assembly 'Microsoft.IdentityModel, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35'. I get it after Appfabric Relaying part is going to return url, after sign in on identity provider. The weird thing is that I set Copy Local to TRUE, because that .dll is not part of Azure GAC. I tried to publish it again, but I received same error. I found few same problems on the internet but with no concrete solution. Does anybody here had something similar and probably have a working solution? Thank you in advance

  We are in the process of creating active-x controls used within our application. Since Microsoft stopped supporting classic Visual Basic, is it wise to use Visual Basic to develop the Active X control or the latest VC++/ATL/MFC libraries provide more feature where we can create controls faster by leaving Visual Basic flexibility? We will not be able to use .NET/VB.NET/C# since the application is supposed to work inside containers and containers may not support latest .NET runtime. Any other language is best fit for Active X control development other than VB and VC++?

  I have a question about memory management when using the addObjectsFromArray method. Basically, I have 2 arrays defined in the appDelegate. I need these 2 arrays for the duration of my application's runtime. I therefore release them in my appDelegate's dealloc method. When I go to use these two arrays in a class, I want one array to store the values from the other, so that the other can have it's contents removed, but still stick around for use. Something like this: [appDelegate.arrayTwo addObjectsFromArray:appDelegate.arrayOne]; [appDelegate.arrayOne removeAllObjects]; I'm getting the compiler error: EXC_BAD_ACCESS because of a pointer issue? retaining issue? • Different kinds of doubles in vb.net?

  Hey all- I'm using QBFC to generate invoices in a Quickbooks integrating app. I'm getting an exception thrown for lineItem.Amount.SetValue(val as Double) when I try to enter a programmatically generated double. The following does not work: lineItem = invoice.ORInvoiceLineAddList.Append.InvoiceLineAdd Dim amount as Double amount = summary.dailySold * summary.dailyRate loggingTxtBox.AppendText("Amount is " & amount & vbNewLine) lineItem.Amount.SetValue(amount) The exception I receive is System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040305): Invalid Amount format. at Interop.QBFC8.IQBAmountType.SetValue(Double val) The following works: lineItem.Amount.SetValue(20.3) Any suggestions? • How to support both DataContractSerializer and XMLSerializer for the same contract on the same host?

  In our production environment, our WCF services are serialized with the XMLSerializer. To do so our service interfaces have the [XMLSerializerFormat] attribute. Now, we need to change to DataContractSerializer but we must stay compatible with our existing clients. Therefore, we have to expose each service with both serializers. We have one constraint: we don't want to redefine each contract interface twice, we have 50 services contract interfaces and we don't want to have IIncidentServiceXml IIncidentServiceDCS IEmployeeServiceXml IEmployeeServiceDCS IContractServiceXml IContractServiceDCS How can we do that? This is a description of what we have tried so far but I'm willing to try completely different approaches: We tried to create all the endpoints by code in our own ServiceHostFactory class. Basically we create each endpoint twice. The problem is that at runtime, WCF complains that the service has two endpoints with the same contact name but with different ContractDescription instances. The message says we should use different contract names or reuse the same ContractDescription instance.

  Hey all. I'm working on an application that was originally intended for HTML, but I've recently concluded that the best thing to do for my purposes is to do it in Flash instead. One of the big things I need is to be able to bring in movieclips from external files and add them to my main movie at runtime (dynamic number of elements, skinning, etc.) Don't need full-on code for this, but I could use some assistance in tracking down the resources to learn how to do these things successfully. Tutorials, best practices… The usual suspects. I've been using Flash for a while now, and used to do this pretty easily in AS2, but I've had some hiccups using classes and addchild in an earlier attempt, so any help would be much appreciated. • C++ : Lack of Standardization at the Binary Level

  Why ISO/ANSI didn't standardize C++ at the binary level? There are many portability issues with C++, which is only because of lack of it's standardization at the binary level. Don Box writes, (quoting from his book Essential COM, chapter COM As A Better C++) C++ and Portability Once the decision is made to distribute a C++ class as a DLL, one is faced with one of the fundamental weaknesses of C++, that is, lack of standardization at the binary level. Although the ISO/ANSI C++ Draft Working Paper attempts to codify which programs will compile and what the semantic effects of running them will be, it makes no attempt to standardize the binary runtime model of C++. The first time this problem will become evident is when a client tries to link against the FastString DLL's import library from a C++ developement environment other than the one used to build the FastString DLL. Are there more benefits Or loss of this lack of binary standardization?

  Hello! I'm trying to serialize "vector" (Microsoft.FSharp.Math) type. And I get that error: Exception Details: System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationException: Type 'Microsoft.FSharp.Math.Instances+FloatNumerics@115' with data contract name 'Instances.FloatNumerics_x0040_115:http://schemas.datacontract.org/2004/07/Microsoft.FSharp.Math' is not expected. Add any types not known statically to the list of known types - for example, by using the KnownTypeAttribute attribute or by adding them to the list of known types passed to DataContractSerializer. I have tried to put KnownType attribute and some other stuff, but nothing helps! Could someone know the answer? • WatiN Testing and Connection Strings Fiasco

  I have a separate project which performs watiN tests. The project is in the form of class library project. When I run test it launches the browser and then uses the Web.config of the Web Application Project which I am testing. The Web.config of web application project has the Dev connection string which should not be used for testing. What are different ways that I can take and tell my WatiN to use the App.config that is inside the WatiN project and not the Web application project? Here are couple of options that I have: 1) Replace the connection string at runtime. 2) Replace the connection string at pre-build event or something.

  I have an NSArrayController which is bound to a class in my Managed Object Context. During runtime the NSArrayController can have a number of different filter predicates applied. At certain intervals, I want to iterate through my NSArrayController's contents regardless of the filter predicate applied to it. To do this, I set the filterPredicate to nil and then reinstate it after having iterated through my array. This seems to work, but I'm wondering if it's best practice? Should I instead be polling my Managed Object Context manually?   I have two data-bound text boxes. One is bound to a string and the other to a number. The 'default' binding is set in XAML. Under some circumstances I need to reverse the bindings at runtime (the string is usually a prefix but sometimes it's a suffix). I have the following code in my view model, called when the window is loaded: Binding stringBinding = BindingOperations.GetBinding(view.seqLeft, TextBox.TextProperty); Binding numberBinding = BindingOperations.GetBinding(view.seqRight, TextBox.TextProperty); view.seqLeft.SetBinding(TextBlock.TextProperty, numberBinding); view.seqRight.SetBinding(TextBlock.TextProperty, stringBinding); After that the code loads the properties to which the binding refers. The problem is that the 'new' binding doesn't seem to work. What have I missed? Is there a better way?

• Cucumber works on Eclipse but not on Jenkins

  I am successfully running Cucumber test on my java/maven eclipse project. But when I add my project do Jenkins I always get the following error "cucumber.runtime.CucumberException: No features found at []". I read in this thread Setting cucumber-jvm options in Maven from the command line that: ...tests are running in separate JVM, so you need to specify that system property in the test plugin configuration (i.e. surefire or failsafe plugin config in your pom.xml) But I am not quite sure how to do this. Can anyone help me? PS: I am using "cucumber-java" and "cucumber-junit" dependencies.

• Workaround for abstract attributes in Java

  In Scala I would write an abstract class with an abstract attribute path: abstract class Base { val path: String } class Sub extends Base { override val path = "/demo/" } Java doesn't know abstract attributes and I wonder what would be the best way to work around this limitation. My ideas: a) constructor parameter abstract class Base { protected String path; protected Base(String path) { this.path = path; } } class Sub extends Base { public Sub() { super("/demo/"); } } b) abstract method abstract class Base { // could be an interface too abstract String getPath(); } class Sub extends Base { public String getPath() { return "/demo/"; } } Which one do you like better? Other ideas? I tend to use the constructor since the path value should not be computed at runtime.

• The "correct" way to define an exception in Python without PyLint complaining

  I'm trying to define my own (very simple) exception class in Python 2.6, but no matter how I do it I get some warning. First, the simplest way: class MyException(Exception): pass This works, but prints out a warning at runtime: DeprecationWarning: BaseException.message has been deprecated as of Python 2.6 OK, so that's not the way. I then tried: class MyException(Exception): def __init__(self, message): self.message = message This also works, but PyLint reports a warning: W0231: MyException.__init__: __init__ method from base class 'Exception' is not called. So I tried calling it: class MyException(Exception): def __init__(self, message): super(Exception, self).__init__(message) self.message = message This works, too! But now PyLint reports an error: E1003: MyException.__init__: Bad first argument 'Exception' given to super class How the hell do I do such a simple thing without any warnings?

• Do I have to remove VS 2010 beta1 in order to get a web app to work on asp.net 2.0?

  I think the title is enough :). I have VS 2010 beta1 installed, and I wish to run an asp.net mvc application on my local IIS. The problem is, the asp.net 4.0 runtime is selected by default for all the web sites, when I try to change it to asp.net 2.0, I get the following error message: I click yes, then ok, and when I get back to the ASP.NET tab of my site's properties, I see the 4.0 version is selected back again! Do I have to remove VS 2010 in order to get this to work? (hopefully not) Ps: I'm using windows XP and IIS 5.1

• Is Lightweight Code Generation (LCG) dead?

  In the .NET 2.0-3.5 frameworks, LCG (aka the DynamicMethod class) was a decent way to emit lightweight methods at runtime when no class structure was needed to support them. In .NET 4.0, expression trees now support statements and blocks, and as such appear to provide sufficient functionality to build just about any functionality you could require from such a method, and can be constructed in a much easier and safer way than directly emitting CIL op-codes. (This statement is borne from today's experimentation of converting some of our most complex LCG code to use expression tree building and compilation instead.) So is there any reason why one would use LCG in any new code? Is there anything it can do that expression trees cannot? Or is it now a 'dead' piece of functionality?
