  I recently found a program called KeyScrambler which appears to be a keyboard driver filter that intercepts keystrokes and jumbles them up for you so keyloggers aren't able to get your keystrokes while visiting your online banking sites. I was wondering if there is a way to tell if KeyScrambler is always first in line for the keyboard driver filters or if another driver filter could be installed and intercept the keystrokes before it gets to KeyScrambler.

• Updating snort rules automatically

  I've been working on getting my snort machine up and running, and working through Snort IDS and IPS Toolkit. The authors suggest using Oinkmaster, but on that website, the last update was February of 2008. That seems sort of...odd. Maybe there haven't been any issues with oinkmaster in the past year and a half, but it made me wonder if there was another solution that I don't know about. If you use snort, do you automatically update your rules, and if so, how?

• Barring connections if VPN is down.

  I have a VPN account and use it for sensitive communication. However the VPN connection sometimes is dropped while my main connection to the internet is still alive. The pages I visit through VPN are on HTTP (not secure) and have javascript code which pings the host every minute or so on a timer. So it happens sometimes that the VPN connection is dropped and yet js sends a request to the server (with the cookies). How could I restrict connections so they only happen if the VPN is live? • Encrypted WiFi with no password?

  Is there any standard that allows a WiFi connection to be encrypted, but not require a password? i know that (old, weak) WEP, and newer WPA/WPA2 require a password (i.e. shared secret). Meanwhile my own wireless connections are "open", and therefore unencrypted. There is no technical reason why i can't have an encrypted link that doesn't require the user to enter any password. Such technology exists today (see public key encryption and HTTPS). But does such a standard exist for WiFi? Note: i only want to protect communications, not limit internet access. i get the sense that no such standard exists (since i'm pretty capable with Google), but i'd like it confirmed. Claraification: i want to protect communcations, not limit internet access. That means users are not required to have a password (or its moral equivalent). This means users are not required: to know a password to know a passphrase to enter a CAPTCHA to draw a secret to have a key fob to know a PIN to use a pre-shared key have a pre-shared file to possess a certificate In other words: it has the same accessibility as before, but is now encrypted.

  It is common knowledge that you can get a virus just by visiting a website. But how is this possible? Do these viruses attack Windows, Mac and Linux users, or are Mac/Linux users immune? I understand that I obviously can get a virus by downloading and executing a .exe in Windows but how can I get a virus just by accessing a website? Are the viruses programmed in JavaScript? (It would make sense since it is a programming language that runs locally.) If so, what JavaScript functions are the ones commonly used?

  How is backup done on ubuntu servers? I have a server (Ubuntu 9.10) which has apache2 installed, php5, mysql etc... The website is a classifieds website where all classifieds are stored in mysql and Solr. I need to backup this server with all information to be able to fully restore it if something goes wrong. • Windows XP: Consequences of setting a password for an account

  I do not quite understand how Windows (specifically Windows XP) handles accounts with/without passwords. As far as I can see, on a fresh Windows XP install I have one default account which has admin rights does not have a password will auto-login (without password prompt) when the computer boots What happens if I set a password for this account? Will it still auto-login? Or will it always prompt for the PW? And generally, what consequences does it have if I set a password? I noted that Scheduled Tasks apparently cannot run under an account w/o password (creating a scheduled task will prompt for the account PW). Is there anything that will not work with a password set? Why is it even possible to have accounts without a password? I have some Unix/Linux background, but the concepts appear a little different under Windows.

  I have an FTP server(proftpd on debian) that I'm going to allow a couple friends access to, and I want some safety nets in place, just in case. These are some of the things I'd like to do: Jail the accounts to their home directories and impose a cap on the amount of data they can upload Allow them access to a shared folder(via symlink or something) where they have full access(Also with a storage cap, but larger) Allow my own account full access to the system(Using groups I guess) Not allow anonymous access, or allow it with its own folder, separate from the shared user folder Currently, I've got the accounts set up and jailed, but it seems like the symlink that I put in is not allowing them to visit the shared folder. I suppose this has to do with them not having read permissions anywhere but their own home directories, or maybe it's something else, I'll continue to look into it and provide any information that is requested. Is what I'm trying to do possible? Any tips or resources that you can share are appreciated. Thanks.

  I have a client with a lot (read several thousand) websites in several old cms solutions that are no longer maintained. Now moving all of them to a maintained solution isn't really an option at this point. So I'm thinking about ways to secure the solutions without patching them. The solutions are mostly joomla 1.0/1.5 and wordpress. What I'm thinking is something like this: mod_suexec to lock everyone into their own home directory apparmor to deny any and all file writes by default. (exclude by default, include things like "images" directories). use htaccess to prevent anything in writable directories from being executed. (aka disable php_engine for images/ directory). mysql triggers to check the "users" tables to prevent adding new admins/superadmins. Does this make sense? Is it viable? Am I missing something obvious?

There are about 11 of these "failed to authenticate" messages logged in quick succession. It looks to me like someone is sitting there trying to guess the password. However, when I tried to replicate this I get the same log messages except that this extra message appears after five attempts: 13/03/10 1:18:48 PM DirectoryService[11] Failed Authentication return is being delayed due to over five recent auth failures for username: tom. I don't want to accuse someone of trying to break into an account without being sure that they were actually trying to break in. My question is this: is it almost definitely someone guessing a password, or could the 11 "failed to authenticate" messages be caused by something else? EDIT: The actual user wasn't logged in, or using a computer at the time of the log in attempts.

How is the scanner determining this vulnerability, is it invoking a bad request then looking to see if it's the default Apache 400 response?

• I want to use OpenVPN to access the web and email from China. How?

  My question: How do I use my already existing OpenVPN setup to enable secure, remote web surfing and email checking from open wireless hotspots? Some long winded details: I am running Ubuntu and have OpenVPN up and working fine as a server. My client machine connects fine as well. However, that just gets me a secure connection to my home network. What I want is to be able to access my VPN server and surf the web or check email securely from anywhere with an open wireless connection. I am frequently in China and having secure, unblocked access would be a boon (especially since I like to work from tea houses and coffee shops and I've already had a password sniffed and hacked once). I already know how to tunnel over SSH via a SOCKS proxy using something like: ssh -ND 8887 -p 22 [email protected] but since I have OpenVPN I figure why not try it? So... what are the steps involved in making it so I can connect to my VPN and the surf and check mail to my hearts content (slowly to be sure but at least it wold be secure). Thx!

  Hello, When trying to do a delete operation on a table, mysql reports the following error: Error code 1227: Access denied; you need the SUPER privilege for this operation. However, my user has this privilege granted for all tables in the schema: GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON myschema.* TO 'my_admin'@'%' How come it asks me for SUPER privilege for a delete? • Locking down a server for shared internet hosting.

  Basically I control several servers and I only host either static websites or scripts which I have designed, so I trust them up to a point. However, I have a few customers who want to start using scripts such as Wordpress or many others - and they want full control over their account. I have started to do the basics - like on php.ini, I have locked it down and restricted commands such as proc, however, there is obviously a lot more I can do. right now, using NTFS permissions, I am trying to lock down the server by running Application Pools and individual sites in their own user, however I feel like I am hitting brick walls... (My old question on Server Fault). At the moment, the only route I can think of is either to implement an off the shelf control panel - which will be expensive and quite frankly, over the top, or look at the Microsoft guide - which is really for an entire infrastructure, not for someone who just wants to lock down a few servers. Does anyone have any guides that can put me on the correct path?

If you connect using a connection string without sspi to a server is there any way a 3rd party can intercept on the wire the password used to log in? "Data Source=MyServer;Initial Catalog=MyDatabase;User Id=sa;Password=CanThisBeSniffed;" I am not asking about MiTM attacks just someone listing on the same computer or on the same hub on the network with wireshark or something similar running. I fired up wireshark myself and did not see it in plain text but it could be a simple obfuscation or proper encryption, I just wanted to know which.

• Putting a Windows DC, Exchange in a DMZ

  I have one guy at my company telling me that I should put FF:TMG in between my main Internet-facing firewall (Cisco 5510) and put my Exchange server and DC on the internal network. I have another guy telling me that I should put the Exchange server and DC in a DMZ I don't particularly like the idea of having my mailboxes and DC's usernames/passwords in a DMZ and I think that Windows authentication would require me opening up so many ports between my DMZ and my internal network that it would be a moot point to have it out there anyways. What are some thoughts? How do you have it set up?

Are there best practices for making this as secure as possible? • stunnel crashing

  I'm trying to use stunnel to secure a legacy application's communications. I can't seem to get it setup and working. Can anyone provide any hints where I'm going wrong? Here's what I'm trying to accomplish: A windows service on a client machine connects to a server on port 7000 using TCP. I'd like to encrypt the communication between client and server. Here's what I've tried: Created a new server that accepts ssl connections on port 7443. Got a certificate for the server and installed it. That seems to work with my test setup. Installed stunnel on my windows machine (version 7.43 from the distribution archive file). Installed libssl32.dll and libeay32.dll in the same directory as stunnel.exe ( from the openssl-0.9.8h-1 binary distribution). Installed it as a service using "stunnel -install" Configured stunnel as follows: debug=7 output=C:\p4\internal\Utility\Proxy\proxy.log service=Proxy taskbar=no [exchange] accept=7000 client=yes connect=proxy.blah.com:7443 I changed my hosts file to trick the old application into connecting through stunnel: server.blah.com 127.0.0.1 # when client looks up server it goes to stunnel proxy.blah.com IP-address-of-server.blah.com # stunnel connects to new server "server.blah.com" now resolves to the machine it's running on (i.e. stunnel). "proxy.blah.com" goes to the real server. stunnel should connect to the server. I start the stunnel service and try to connect. • Windows 8.1 and fingerprint readers

  Is there any build in UI for that kind of hardware like it exist in Modern UI for WiFi, Bluetooth, Broadband mobile and other common settings or I'm forced to use separate software (besides the obvious drivers for hardware)? The thing is that I have build-in fingerprint reader in my laptop and I have installed all necessary official drivers for it (and it looks like they are working fine, btw). But I did not find any UI settings where I could change Sign-in option from password/picture password/pin to fingerprint.
