• design for a parser to handle very large files

  I have written a program which records protocol messages between an application and a hardware device which matches each application request with each hardware response. This is so that I can later remove the hardware, connect a 'replay' application to the main application and wait for an application request and reply with a matched copy of the requisite hardware reply message. My replay application saves the matched request/response in a list (using C++ std::list). This works fine on a small interaction session. My problem now is that I need to be able to use the replay over a long long session. With my current implementation, the replay program eventually uses up all available memory on my computer and crashes. So I need some sort of lookahead - and not parse the whole session in one go. Can anyone make any suggestions on how to get started?

• Are two database trips reasonable for a login system?

  I am designing a login system for a project, and have an issue about it requiring two trips to the database when a user logs in. User types in username and password Database is polled and password hash is retrieved for comparative purposes (first trip) Code tests hash against entered password (and salt), and if verified, resets the session ID New session ID and username are sent back to the database to write a row to the login table, and generate a login ID for that session. EDIT: I am using a random salt. Does this design make sense? Am I missing something? Is my concern about two trips unfounded? Comments and suggestions are welcome.

• x11 Remote Desktop with Ubuntu 12.04

  When I was running Debian, I was able to start a remote session over x11 by just typing gnome-session However, with Ubuntu 12.04, this only seems to result in my desktop and background being forwarded over x11 -- the top bar (where the clock is) and dock are both missing. I tried starting all of unity by executing unity, but that just resulted in a segfault. How can I start a Unity 2D session over x11? Edit: I prefer x11 as I need to tunnel the connection over 2 other servers. I would need to do a good amount of port forwarding within SSH to get any other connections back. Of course, if someone has any other suggestions, I'm willing to listen.

• Hibernation is still missing from menu in 13.10 after enabling via polkit. How to enable?

  I know that since 12.04, we need to add a policykit rule to enable hibernation (see question How to enable hibernation? and the Official Documentation). I can successfully bring my laptop into hibernation mode with sudo pm-hibernate or sudo s2disk, so the rule is in place and works, but the hibernation entry is still missing in the menu. I can tell from looking through the source of the indicator-session package (but not understanding the whole code) that there is still a hibernation menu entry in the code and it should be displayed when the system is capable of hibernating. Please calm down if you're enraged by this. This is very unlikely to be a conspiracy, but rather a bug/regression on a deeper level, which can happen when you move code around or replace it. Question: What needs to be done in 13.10 to properly tell indicator-session that the system can hibernate? Possible duplicate: Hibernation still not available - No activity, because saucy was in development at that time, so out of scope for AskUbuntu. • Move window from display :0.0 to display :10.0?

  I'm using Cygwin to login to my lubuntu box: ssh -y *user*@192.168.12.37 I can easily use byobu to redeem my cli session. Is there a way to move a running window from display :0.0 to my remote session (:10.0)? I ask because my lubuntu box is hooked to the HDTV in the living room, and I give my kids priority to do their educational stuff on the big screen. I then (try to) pick up where I left off on a netbook Cygwin session. Usually I have to quit everything and restart on the netbook.

• Microsoft DevDays 2010 Day 2

  I delivered a session today that describes what's new in Office 2010 for solution developers. It's a session that I have evolved over the past year. My core demos have also evolved, and I'm pleased with the impact they make. The session was well attended, and I was pleased to see plenty of enthusiasm for Microsoft Office solutions from the good folks in the Netherlands. My demo image is still based on Office 2010 Beta 2, and that's something I'm already in the process of changing. • No Launcher or bars on desktop when running from a VPS

  I'm using tightVNC on Ubuntu 12.10 and can see and change the desktop background pic. I can also press f3 to get a file viewer. But there is no topbar or left side launcher. I do not think its an nvidia problem because I'm using a VPS and I logon remotely. I've tried so many variations of /root/.vnc/xstartup such as gnome-session &, or gnome-session –-session=gnome-classic &, my head is spinning. I've seen other people have this issue and was wondering if anyone solved it.

• How to test other DE in Ubuntu 12.10 live (alpha)

  caution: 12.10 is not yet released but I was told it will say as is also when release happens (live session) So, new ubuntu live session does not have option to "logout" and choose different desktop environment (DE). This function was usable if one installs ubuntu live on USB stick with permanent changes. One can install any software, including KDE (plasma) or LXDE. Until including 12.04, one could simply logout and choose different DE. Now, there is no "logout" option in top right menu and if ran service lightdm restart it automatically logs in to live session account with unity.

• Are these hacking attempts or something less sinister?

  I just had a look through our web server error logs, and Terminal services is reporting: "Remote session from client name a exceeded the maximum allowed failed logon attempts. The session was forcibly terminated." Hundreds of times, every 10.5 seconds or so for a period of about 5-10 minutes, once at 2pm yesterday and once again at about 1am this morning. We CURRENTLY have RDP open to the outside, as I am just completing the setup and now and then I/Others need to jump on from an outside office/location (VPN isn't an option) As these are so regular, am I right in assuming that they may be the result of some sort of dictionary attack? or could something like an internal admin's hung session cause such a mass of events? (Win Server 2008 R2)

• Is it better to use a Database or a data structure for network stack?

  I've built a multi threaded messaging application in C and I'm currently using a MySQL Memory table to save the session ID, but I'm not sure whether this was a good decision or not. It works like this, the application sends a message and saves the source session ID in the MySQL table. When the application gets the success response it will remove the session's ID from the MySQL table, or if it received an error response then it will keep the ID to be retried later. I've built it this way so that I don't need to care about building a data structure by myself, and the Database provides flexibility when it comes to querying it. Do you think this is appropriate or do I need to use something else? Please note that the application is expecting to handle a large number of transactions/sec.

• managed beans as managed properties

  I am using JSF 1.1 on WebSphere 6.1. I am building search functionality within an application and am having some issues. I've stripped out the extras, and have left myself with the following: 4 managed beans: SearchController - Controller bean, session scope SearchResults - session scope (store the results) ProductSearch - session scope (store the search conditions) ResultsBacking - Backing bean for DataTable, used to determine which row was clicked, request scope The SearchController bean has, as managed properties, the other 3. All except ResultsBacking are session scoped. If there is only 1 item in the search results, I want to bring up that record directly. I call setFirst(0) for the data table in the ResultsBacking method (I want to use the existing method that handle which item was clicked, so this is called right after the setFirst). When I go to do another search, I get an IllegalArgumentException when calling getRowData in the data table. According to the api, this is thrown 'if now(sic) row data is available at the currently specified row index'. I'm confused as to why this happens. It works the first time but not the second. Do I need to remove the ResultsBacking on a new search to get rid of the old state?

• When actually is a closure created?

  Is it true that a closure is created in the following cases for foo, but not for bar? Case 1: <script type="text/javascript"> function foo() { } </script> foo is a closure with a scope chain with only the global scope. Case 2: <script type="text/javascript"> var i = 1; function foo() { return i; } </script> same as Case 1. Case 3: <script type="text/javascript"> function Circle(r) { this.r = r; } Circle.prototype.foo = function() { return 3.1415 * this.r * this.r } </script> in this case, Circle.prototype.foo (which returns the circle's area) refers to a closure with only the global scope. (this closure is created). Case 4: <script type="text/javascript"> function foo() { function bar() { } } </script> here, foo is a closure with only the global scope, but bar is not a closure (yet), because the function foo is not invoked in the code, so no closure goo is ever created. It will only exist if foo is invoked , and the closure bar will exist until foo returns, and the closure bar will then be garbage collected, since there is no reference to it at all anywhere. So when the function doesn't exist, can't be invoked, can't be referenced, then the closure doesn't exist yet (never created yet). Only when the function can be invoked or can be referenced, then the closure is actually created?

• Can't read from RSOP_RegistryPolicySetting WMI class in root\RSOP namespace

  The class is documented in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa375050%28VS.85%29.aspx And from this page it seems it's not an abstract class: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa375084%28VS.85%29.aspx But whenever I run the code below I get an "Invalid Class" exception in ManagementObjectSearcher.Get(). So, does this class exist or not? • Implementing a State Machine in Angular.js to control routing

  Can anyone help me with integrating a state machine to control routing? What's the best method to do this? Create a service? I need to basically intercept every $location request, run the state machine and let it figure out what the next $location.path should be. Think of the problem like a bank of questions that get added and removed over time. The user visits once in a while, passes in the user's answers object to the statemachine, and the statemachine figures out which question to load. This is my pseudocode, but i need to figure out where to put this or what event I can hook into to make sure all route requests are passed through the machine. Do I need a specific stateMachine controller? Do I create a service? Where do I use the service? • Angularjs: addition of integers even after I parse the variable as integer
