• How can I monitor a website for malicious changes to the files

  I had an occasion recently where our website was compromised - a link farm was added to a couple of the pages on one occasion, and on another occasion, a large and nasty aspx file was put on the server. I won't mention the host's name (Hostway), but I was pretty annoyed that someone was able to do this. No, it wasn't a leaky password - around 10 sites hosted by HW with consecutive IP addresses got trashed. Anyway. What I need is a utility or service (preferably free) that takes a snapshot of my websites contents, and then regularly monitors the files (size and datestamp) for unauthorized changes or additions, and alerts me. I've used web services that monitor one file for changes, but I'm looking for something a bit more aggressive.

• Slow on browsing web, but normal when using apt-get

  I have a problem with my fresh instalation of Ubuntu 11.10. The problem happen when i start up my browser and accessing website such google, askubuntu.com, facebook and other sites. frustate on the situation i try watch the progress in system monitor. the result from monitor shows that there is no data transfer when i try to accessing the page. firstly, i assume that it is the trouble from my ISP or my home connection. But it is not. When i try pinging google it shows transaction between my computer and the network but still null from browser. Then i tried to test the aptitude and it was work fine but still the browser won't recieve any packet from the internet. Here is the detail of my tools : Laptop : Toshiba Satellite e205 (network card atheros) Operating System : Ubuntu 11.04 dual booted with Win7 Browser : Mozilla Firefox comes up with the Ubuntu 11.10 installation Chrome : Last version (just yesterday install it) Thank You before :) [this question posted via win]

I suppose hotlink protection prevents Google Images to show images in its results because I did some tests and it seems hotlink protection does prevent my images to be shown in Google Images search.

• What is the advantage to hosting static resources on a separate domain?

  I notice a lot of sites host their resources on a separate domain from the main site, e.g. StackExchange using sstatic.net, Barnes & Noble using imagesbn.com, etc. I understand that there are benefits to putting your static resources on a separate host, possibly with an efficient static-file web server like nginx, freeing up the main server to focus on serving dynamic content. Similarly, outsourcing to a shared CDN like cloudfront Akamai is logical. What is the benefit to using a separate domain otherwise, though? Why sstatic.net instead of static.stackexchange.com? Update: Several answers miss the core question. I understand that there is benefit to splitting between multiple hosts — parallel downloads, slimmer web server, etc. But what is more elusive is why multiple domains. Why sstatic.net rather than static.stackexchange.com as the host for shared resources? So far, only one answer has addressed that.

• SOLVED BleachBit: How to Completely Clear URL History in Firefox?

  14.04 / Firefox 29.0 I've been using Bleachbit to clear usage/file history, and for the most part it works great. However, it doesn't seem to clear the website hostnames out of the URL, at all. These addresses are not bookmarked. Also, the total URL isn't preserved, just the hostname. Visit site http://www.bluesnews.com/some_random_URL_string Exit Firefox Run Bleachbit, with ALL Firefox options selected Restart Firefox Check history: completely empty, other than bookmarked sites. www.bluesnews is NOT bookmarked Type "blue" which is Firefox automatically completes as "http://www.bluesnews.com/" Alternate Step #3: Use Firefox's built-in "Clear History" and select ALL entries with a time frame of "Everything". Same result as above. My inquiry in BB forums hasn't been responded to. I found Dan's proposed solution, however changing autocomplete in about:config only turns off the function, it doesn't actually stop storing URLs.   About 30 Oct I ran recent updates for 12.04 64bit. No errors occurred. Next day when I booted computer most apps would not start or if started (eg Chrome) other app windows do not appear. Trying a command line start on most apps gives this message: "Maximum number of clients reachedError: cannot open display: :0" The 'error' part of message not always the same. Have tried to find solution on Ubuntu forums and other Linux web sites, but cannot find a solution. HELP please.

• Fixing Mobility Radeon HD3650 driver in 12.04 LTS

  Okay, I know the subject has been discussed many times, but i dont find any of the instructions working. Most promising guide was here https://launchpad.net/~makson96/+archive/fglrx ive also tried https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI because since the driver installation was written on other sites as well, this page included a "patch" file, but since im unaware how to patch installations, im out of luck. If i understand correctly, the patch should fix the driver and eliminate constant error messages. My system is 64bit 12.04 LTS and card is Mobility Radeon HD3650. Usual installation of the driver results in weird display resoulution (1100x something, while it should be 1440x900) and even 3d games did not work. Can anyone give me any more pointers? Much appreciated!

  Is there a way in which I can find out if a user arrived at my site via a redirect? Here's an example: There are two sites, first.com & second.com. Any request to first.com will do a 302 redirect to second.com. When the request at second.com arrives, is there anyway to know it was redirected from first.com? Note that in this example you have no control over first.com. (In fact, it could be something bad, like kiddieporn.com.) Also note, because it is a redirect, it will not be in the HTTP referrer header.

  During a recent project, while waiting for our Development Database to be provisioned on the clients corporate SQL Server Environment (these things can sometimes take weeks or months to be setup), we began our initial development against a local instance on SQL Server Express, just as an interim measure until the Development database was live.  This was going just fine, until we found that we needed to do some profiling to understand a problem we were having with the performance of our ORM generated Data Access Layer.  The full version of SQL Server Management Studio includes a profiler, that we could use to help with this kind of problem, however the Express version does not, so I was really pleased to find that there is a freely available Profiler for SQL Server Express imaginatively titled ‘SQL Server Express Profiler’, and it worked great for us.  http://sites.google.com/site/sqlprofiler/

  I have MAMP Pro Installed. I'm well aware with the advanced features of MAMP Pro I can change to different types of Hosts, but I wanted to know why my previous method would not work within mavericks. This was my usual working method in 10.8, but now with 10.9 it's a headache. The previous method would: Write a custom address with the host address: "#Virtual Hosts" 127.0.0.1 nameofsite.local go to /Applications/MAMP/conf/apache and open the httpd.conf file, scroll to the bottom and then add NameVirtualHost * DocumentRoot "/Applications/MAMP/htdocs" ServerName localhost DocumentRoot "/Users/Klimt/Sites/siteoffolder" ServerName clientA.local make sure the ports is set to 80, 443, 3306. reset MAMP PRO and then usually type in the url address and it's gold from there. any help?

  I've always coded in C# MVC3 when developing web applications. But now i wanted to learn a bit more about developing web sites with just ASP.NET. But now i'm wondering what a good setup for my code would be. For me, an MVC like pattern seems to be a good way to go. But obviously ASP.NET doesn't have any router and controller classes. So i guess people have a different way of setting up their code when they do ASP.NET. So i'm looking for more information on how to get started with this. So not really the basics of ASP.NET, but something that focuses on a good code setup. Any good tutorials/information about this/?

  Okay, I have a cpanel account with unmetered everything (pay a bit per month), so I wanna host my forum on it etc I have the domains as lets say money.com wordpress.com forum.com As I'll have to put everything in different folders for instance money will be in /m/ wordpress /w/ and forum in /forum/ or something. What I'm saying is, how do I hide the file so it'll look like money.com/m/ is actually money.com ?? I need to hide the folder name the contents are in so I can host multiple sites, therefore the site will look like its the only site on the host so I don't have to add a redirect for it to direct it to the folder?   So chrome has just updated itself automatically and you are now running v18 – great. Or is it… If like me, you are someone that are running sites using a self-signed SSL Certificate (i.e. when running a site on a developer machine) you may come across the following lovely message; Fear not, this is likely as a result of you following instructions you found on the apache openssl site which results in a self signed cert using the MD5 signature hashing algorithm. Using OpenSSL The simple fix is to generate a new certificate specifying to use the SHA512 signature hashing algorithm, like so; openssl req -new -x509 -sha512 -nodes -out server.crt -keyout server.key Simples! Now, you should be able to confirm the signature algorithm used is sha512 by looking at the details tab of certificate Notes If you change your certificate, be sure to reapply any private key permissions you require – such as allowing access to the application pool user.

• The new Google Analytics - what new useful features have you found?

  If you don't know already a new version of Google Analytics has just come out. On first initial views it doesn't seem like much of an improvement on the previous version. There's lot's linking to Google's social stats but I'm yet to see the value of that. Also it doesn't seem to make the best use of the important data, it's tending to push referral sites, keywords to the back and bring the less important data to the front. Is that a sign of things to come??? One feature I did find interesting was the visitors flow as it shows the visitors path through your site. What new features have you found useful/interesting?

• What's the difference between my nameserver and CName settings?

  I have purchased a domain name(mxsoup.net) through GoDaddy, and it is just parked. In order to set up my custom URL for my SourceAudio site, they give me the following instructions: In order to host your site at a your own URL, we need you to set up some DNS records to point your URL to us. Specifically, we need two CNAME references, one for 'www.mxsoup.net' and one for 'secure.mxsoup.net', both of which should point to 'web2.sourceaudio.com'. But the rep on the phone at GoDaddy said that my site is hosted at HostMonster.com, and therefore I need to talk to them to accomplish this(which is possibly true, but my business owner says he hasn't purchased hosting for this particular domain, yet he does have some other sites in his hostmonster hosting acct.) My GoDaddy account shows that my nameservers are pointing at NS1.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and NS2.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and I can edit those. But is this the same as setting up the CNAME as described above? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  I have two ecommerce websites, selling music digital downloads, on the same VPS, currently using cPanel/WHM (but thinking of switching to Virtualmin). They have separate domains and IPs of course. They both share from the same set of music files, so I have duplicate copies in each website directory, which takes up a lot of disk space. How might I go about sharing the same set of music files across both sites, allowing PHP access, so that it does not break my shopping cart's functionality of serving customers the downloads after they have paid for them? I thought of maybe using symlinks or something, but I don't know if it's possible, or if it would have to somehow circumvent built-in security features of the server. I'm new to VPS management.

• How can i install XFCE along side unity?

  I would like to be able to install XFCE to run alongside unity so I can choose on startup which DE I use, without breaking any features of either DE.
