• Starting small custom development company, type of niches to target?

  This is kind of a new years thing for me as I want to be more entrepreneurial going forward with programming and this is kind of a general question for anyone who may share the same ambitions as me. I have experience with web programming and, although I work full time for a company doing programming, I have some freelance programmers that I work with / employ for small projects. I want to see about taking things to the next level as far as building a small company doing custom development. I'm just not sure how to figure out what niches to target as far as what type of apps to build as demos, etc. I was thinking mobile (maybe Android or Iphone) but am just curious if anyone has any advice / resources. A lot of "web development" seems to end up being just using a CMS like Joomla or Wordpress, for smaller sites, so I want to figure a way to steer clear of this crowd and find some opportunity with companies / entrepreneurs who actually need real programming development done to build apps. • PHP accessible shared content between two websites on the same VPS on different domains/IPs

  I have two ecommerce websites, selling music digital downloads, on the same VPS, currently using cPanel/WHM (but thinking of switching to Virtualmin). They have separate domains and IPs of course. They both share from the same set of music files, so I have duplicate copies in each website directory, which takes up a lot of disk space. How might I go about sharing the same set of music files across both sites, allowing PHP access, so that it does not break my shopping cart's functionality of serving customers the downloads after they have paid for them? I thought of maybe using symlinks or something, but I don't know if it's possible, or if it would have to somehow circumvent built-in security features of the server. I'm new to VPS management.

• How can i install XFCE along side unity?

  I would like to be able to install XFCE to run alongside unity so I can choose on startup which DE I use, without breaking any features of either DE. Following this: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/xubuntu "Note: don't install Nautilus in Xubuntu! This will cause system conflicts." If you're not experienced with writing a networked game, this is going to be a difficult learning exercise. I know the theory about sockets, servers, clients, protocols, connections and such things. Now I wonder how one can learn to write a network game: How to balance load problems? How to manage the game state? How to keep things synchronized? How to protect the communication and client from reverse engineering? How to work around latency problems? Which things should be computed local and which things on the server? ... Are there any good books, tutorials, sites, interesting articles or other questions regarding this? I'm looking for broad answers, but specific ones are fine too to learn the difference.

  So I've been following the tutorials from the book Sean James's "3D Graphics with XNA Game Studio 4.0", and have been doing fine until i reached the shadow mapping part. in this book it creates point lights with a Sphere model. my first Q is how to draw a directional Light with this frame work? secondly it can do shadow mapping just for one light, how can i do shadow mapping for all or parts of the lights in the game? i just want to know how to modify this codes to do the above tasks. • What's the difference between my nameserver and CName settings?

  I have purchased a domain name(mxsoup.net) through GoDaddy, and it is just parked. In order to set up my custom URL for my SourceAudio site, they give me the following instructions: In order to host your site at a your own URL, we need you to set up some DNS records to point your URL to us. Specifically, we need two CNAME references, one for 'www.mxsoup.net' and one for 'secure.mxsoup.net', both of which should point to 'web2.sourceaudio.com'. But the rep on the phone at GoDaddy said that my site is hosted at HostMonster.com, and therefore I need to talk to them to accomplish this(which is possibly true, but my business owner says he hasn't purchased hosting for this particular domain, yet he does have some other sites in his hostmonster hosting acct.) My GoDaddy account shows that my nameservers are pointing at NS1.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and NS2.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and I can edit those. But is this the same as setting up the CNAME as described above? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Where can I safetly search domain whois without worrying about the search engine parking on the domain immediately after the search?

  There are a lot of companies that provide domain whois but I've heard of a lot of people who had bad experiences where the domain was bought soon after the whois search and the price was increased dramatically. Where can I gain access to a domain whois where I don't have to worry about that happening? Update: Apparently, the official name for this practice is called Domain Front Running and some sites go as far as to create explicit policies stating that they don't do it. This is where a domain registrar or an intermediary (like a domain lookup site) mines the searches for possibly attractive domains and then either sells the data to a third-party, or goes ahead and registers the name themselves ahead of you. In one case a registrar took advantage of what's known as the "grace period" and registered every single domain users looked up through them and held on to them for 5 days before releasing them back into the pool at no cost to themselves. If I search "above infranet solutions inc" If you open the site, it will show you the right title that I wanted to achieve.

  I'm setting up a list of ping services for a portal. It has a blog, forum, articles, restaurants, hotels and many other information, so it is far beyond a blog. I have a list of standard ping services for WP blogs - but I do not know if this should be literally only for blogs. My questions are: Is it recommended to ping blog services from a portal, such as http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2? Are there any penalties for sites that are not recognized as blogs? Is there some list of ping services for regular websites and not only blogs? Thanks!

• Ubuntu 12.10 - VirtualBox not sharing internet with guest system

  I went from ArchLinux to Ubuntu on my dev box. I use VirtualBox to test web sites on Windows and IE. I have my Windows 7 VirtualBox image running on Ubuntu's VirtualBox. Back with ArchLinux, internet worked "out of the box" on the Windows boxes. I left the default options on the box's Network Options (NAT). The Windows machine shows as "connected to ethernet" but reports: The dns server isn't responding So I can't access Internet from there. I tried searching for Ubuntu's official docs but they seem pretty outdated. I tried using my old boxes from Arch (which boot normally but have no internet) and creating a new box from Ubuntu itself, but still get the same results. Update: I'm using VirtualBox 4.1.18 from Ubuntu's repository (apt-get install virtualbox).

  I've always coded in C# MVC3 when developing web applications. But now i wanted to learn a bit more about developing web sites with just ASP.NET. But now i'm wondering what a good setup for my code would be. For me, an MVC like pattern seems to be a good way to go. But obviously ASP.NET doesn't have any router and controller classes. So i guess people have a different way of setting up their code when they do ASP.NET. So i'm looking for more information on how to get started with this. So not really the basics of ASP.NET, but something that focuses on a good code setup. Any good tutorials/information about this/?

  I need to add photo-blog to a site that I'm recently working on. It is very simple site so the blog doesn't have to be very sophisticated. What I need is: a CMS that allows me to create simple blog-like news with one (or more) images at the beginning and some description/comment below. • How to I teach my artist to do arts for games?

  So my girlfriend is an artist and I'm a programmer and we often talk about joining talents and doing some small games or other fun stuff for the different popular platforms currently out. But because I haven't really done any serious games development yet I have a hard time explaining to her how she should create or package the assets she'd make so we always end up not doing nothing about it. What I'm mostly thinking about here is when doing frame by frame animation. I know sprite sheets are used for this kind of thing but then comes questions like frames per second and stuff like like that. Not program wise but art wise. Is there a reference site or sites out there that teach someone with the skills of art how to manage and arrange the assets in sprite sheets and other stuff in words that artists understand?

  What do you need to know to at the very least get your foot in the door? We're assuming for someone who doesn't have a college degree (yet) but will eventually get one. My guess is html, css, javascript, and php, and photoshop and dreamweaver, and sql. And being familiar with using a web host to have sites live, like knowing how to use cpanel. It's probably a very inaccurate and narrow guess but that's what i think right now. I don't know exactly.

Is it safe to just 301 redirect all pages to their SSL equivalent, for example in a common PHP include file: if($_SERVER['HTTPS']!="on"){ $redirect= "https://".$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'].$_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']; header("Location:$redirect",true,301); exit(); } Obviously I'm aware this is also possible within a .htaccess file but that cannot be modified in our case. Obviously all internal links would be switched to https:// links but obviously we need to sort out incoming links from Google and elsewhere. Is this a sound approach? Are there any other gotchas to be aware of?

  I would like to have the same website to sell a specific product, in multiple domains , to take advantage of keywords matching the domain name, for several different searches. However, I understand that having the same content in multiple sites will unleash the wrath of Google. If I have a redirect from all domains minus one, to that last one, do I still get any bonus for the "magic exact domain match jackpot"? Same question applies to canonical URLs... • Setting up International Keyboard -layouts over X? Why do my kbd -layouts get reseted after reboot?

  I have asked a related question in different sites such as here in German and a related thread here, a different case in the latter though. I almost solved the question here, basically: "/etc/default/keyboard" -modification and one-line "$ setxkbmap -option grp:caps_toggle -variant dvorak-intl,nodeadkeys, us,de,no &" -- but the layout-settings get reseted after reboot. I use Debian but I believe the same settings apply to Ubuntu hence asking here.   Recently, I read that Facebook ads are moving towards retargeting and got interested deeper into subject. Essentially, retargeting is technique advertisers use that tracks purchase intent by putting cookies into your browser and when you visit another website within ad network you will see ad for item you "wanted to buy". In order this to for, both publisher and advertiser need to work together. Publisher needs add couple of lines of javascript and publisher need to be able to read this info across sites. In most cases, javascript inserts iframe from adnetwork domain. Iframe script sets cookies for both host domain and remote adnetwork domain. However, Same Origin policy do not let iframes read/set content from parent domain. Is there something I'm missing here? Can someone explain how this technique actually works?

  I have a school project to build an AI for a 2D racing game in which it will compete with several other AIs (no collision). We are given a black and white bitmap image of the racing track, we are allowed to choose basic stats for our car (handling, acceleration, max speed and brakes) after we receive the map. The AI connects to the game's server and gives to it several times a second numbers for the current acceleration and steering. The language I chose is C++, by the way. As far as I understand, this is just the process of obtaining a new VPS with WHM/CPanel and then migrating the existing accounts over to the new VPS, testing the sites out, then pointing the DNS to the new nameserver records.   I am doing research about backlinks/PR/SEO/Search Result position and all I read about is that PageRank is not important, that it worth before but now it's not important at all. Only thing I found useful about it that is "change Search Result position", but ONLY if there are two sites with same keywords and same text content value, then Search Engine will check which site has higher PR and place that site above lowest one. Google counts PR importance as 20% for displaying search rankings, and Yahoo! is like 3%... Correct me if I am wrong... Is there any other good thing from it?

• Broken Links in different browsers

  Hi I'm having problems with our website, http://www.accessiblehomehealthcare.com, which is a wordpress 2.7 (version). All of a sudden our RSS links broke on the right side, which has happened before and I fixed it within 5 mins. Now, when I fix it, it doesn't look right in different version of I.E. or Firefox, I have I.E. 8 and Firefox 3.6.15 and it looks good for the most part, but there are a few parts where the links are broken. One browser the links would look ok but go to another page and the links or logos would be broken. Certain parts of the website should be static(identical) to the other pages of the site, but if a link is broken on one page, its perfect on another page. I was wondering was there a secret code for wordpress to keep the sites compatible with all browser versions or is there a bigger issue???? Any help or suggestions will help???
