• Advice for an EC2 Architecture and Deployment Strategy

  My company is currently migrating several websites and PHP web applications (standard LAMP stack) from three in-house servers to Amazon EC2. Because we had only three servers, we clustered several low-traffic websites with perhaps one high-traffic web application, and served them from the same server. The server admin has pretty much copied the previous architecture wholesale onto the EC2 instances, simply upping the instance size to account for the highest traffic client that occupies that particular instance. This architecture might be okay if it wasn't for deployment. Any time one of these sites/apps changes, it means redeploying the entire instance, along with the 30 sites/apps it hosts, instead of just updating one. How can we architect our cloud in a more modular fashion? Should each app get its own appropriately-sized instance? What is the best strategy for deployment in this type of situation?

  i have troubles setting up my db files. Please kindly point me in the right direction! i need to define a nameserver that manage a domain example.org.au then i need it to have two records. one called server which is the ip address of current machine the other called www where www.example.org.au will be pointed to another ip address. i cant seem to get my system to work.   Can I, and if I can, how can I rename a shard in Mongo? Like if I wanted to change the instances of rs0 to rep0 below: mongos> sh.status() --- Sharding Status --- sharding version: { "_id" : 1, "version" : 4, "minCompatibleVersion" : 4, "currentVersion" : 5, "clusterId" : ObjectId("111111111111") } shards: { "_id" : "rs0", "host" : "rs0/mongo0a:27017,mongo0b:27017" } ... I have thought about removing and re-adding the shard, but I'm not sure how I'd do that without having to drain the shard and drop dbs. Currently 0 of the collections have sharding enabled, I just have a few standalones added as shards. Thanks

  I have a LibreOffice Writer document that has undergone a process of editing, and sections of the text that needed to be rewritten were highlighted in yellow. As I fixed those sections, I removed the yellow highlight. Now, I want to make sure there are no remaining areas of highlighted text that have not been fixed or possibly the highlight was not removed. It's many hundreds of pages, so a manual scan is unfeasible. Also, it might be that one space or one character got accidentally left highlighted, and I want to ensure I've accounted for them all. How can I search the document to find all instances where text has been highlighted?

  I have setup tomcat 6 on a server with several different instances which run on different ports For Eg: http://10.XXX.XXX.XXX:8080/myAPP1 http://10.XXX.XXX.XXX:8088/myAPP2 http://10.XXX.XXX.XXX:8082/myAPP3 and so on... These urls are available two the users using these and other applications Now I want to hide the ports on which each of the applications are running... So that the user could see only something like this http://10.XXX.XXX.XXX/myAPP1 http://10.XXX.XXX.XXX/myAPP2 http://10.XXX.XXX.XXX/myAPP3 What is needed to be done for this I have achieved this for one url (i.e. one port) using the firewall rules and redirect the request on HTTP 80 port to the port that tomcat is listening.. • Multiple Windows Desktop areas for Full-Screen applications

  Is it possible to run multiple instances of Windows Explorer within a single user session, or configure multiple desktops that are portions of a screen? I don't know the best way to describe what I want to achieve, but here's a picture of what I've got: I've got a 4 monitor setup, 3 portrait and one landscape, and I am normally running a number of RDP sessions, outlook, chrome, a development environment or two, so on and so forth. Most of these applications support full-screen views which mostly or completely hide the window borders, but on the Windows Desktop they take up a full monitor to do so. What I want to do is have 7 "desktops", "regions", call them what you will, each of which is, for the purposes of applications running in it, a "full screen" environment: I'm not tied to Windows Explorer for this, in case it helps - a different window manager that will support this functionality would be a perfectly acceptable answer.

• "Permission denied (publickey)" error when ssh'ing to Amazon EC2 Debian AMI 05f3ef71

  I have launched a Debian system using AMI 05f3ef71 in Amazon EC2, but I have no lock connecting to it using SSH as suggested in "Connecting to Your Linux/UNIX Instances Using SSH". I tried several user names: ec2-user, root, debian... None of them worked. I always get a Permission denied (publickey) error message. Using ec2-get-console-output instance_id as suggested doesn't work either, it requires option "-K". If I supply it, I get the error message Required option '-C, --cert CERT' missing, but I have no idea what to supply there. Port 22 is opened on the affected instance. Does anyone have an idea what I could try to log in to my instance?

  I am new to virtualization. I am running on ubuntu. I have a set of linux machines (5 to 6 machines). Which I want to combine as a single resource pool and on demand create multiple virtual instances of machines out of it. This is comparable to what VirtualBox does in a single system. • High IO latency on ESXi 4.1 on HP DL580 G7

  at my Company we were experiencing some weird spikes on IO latency on one of our ESXi instances. we've spend 24h figuring out whats wrong and no clue so far. after giving up we put all the disks into a different server (HP DL380 G7) with much less RAM and only one 6(HT) cores (from 12 on the DL 580) which run fine for about 2 hours. I dont know the specs for the DL380 but both servers have a Smart Array P410i with BBWC (the DL 580 has 1GB) Is it possible that one(or all) of the disks is failing without actually failing?

  I am trying to write a batch file that will automate the following manual process: Open a new cmd prompt (prompt1) Run a bat file (b1) Run a program (that will continue to run) Minimize prompt1 Open a new cmd prompt (prompt2) Run a bat file (b1) Run a different program (that will continue to run) Minimize prompt2 I've found ways to open multiple instances of cmd to run different things, but after I've run the first thing (b1), I then need to run a program in that same cmd window. I currently have start /min cmd /k C:\Users\db2admin\python_environment\Scripts\activate.bat start /min cmd /k C:\Users\db2admin\python_environment\Scripts\activate.bat This opens the two windows and runs the bat, great, but now I need to execute another command (running a python file) in each of the cmd windows. How do I send commands to each prompt?

Essentially, I want to be able to do something like a ps -ef | grep <process_name> to get the PIDs and then run another command (if required) to identify the CPU... Is prstat able to do this? I'm making an assumption that as each database instance is started each one uses a different CPU. I'm not sure if I'm understanding this correctly... The reason I want to do this is because Sun hardware has slow CPU's, but lots of them. Therefore, to get the best performance out of it, I need to try and spread the load among CPU's... Thanks

• User mapping lost after manual failover

  I have two Microsoft SQL Server instances set up for mirroring each with a number of databases. There are a number of logins and for each database one or more user/login mappings. When I restore a backup of database I always have to redo the login/user mappings. I understand this because the logins are per database server. So after restoring the databases on the pricipal I redid the login/user mappings. This was not possible for the mirror because the databases were 'restoring'. After a manual failover I could not use the databases because user credentials were missing. This was not unexpected, so I did the login/user mapping again. I did a manual failover again to make the initial pricipal, which was now the mirror, principal again. To my surprise I could not use the databases because the login/user mappings were gone. Is this the expected behaviour?

• Uptime concerns in case of AWS outage

  I am running an Elastic Load Balancer backup by 2 instances in different Availability Zones in US East. I am using Multi-AZ RDS as well. Ideally this should ensure that if one AZ goes down, it should not effect the app because everything is spread across multiple AZs. But the recent AWS outage took the app down for a long time. I am not sure how this can happen. It would be great if someone can point out what went wrong. Major question here I have is how can I avoid this in future? I can setup app servers across different regions or even providers and use DNS for load balancing but what do I do with MySQL? Read Replicas will introduce some lag which I would want to avoid.

• High Availability Clustering and Virtualization

  I'm trying to understand how the various virtualization vendors (specifically Amazon EC2, but also VMware and Xen) enable software vendors to provide a real HA solution in the environment where the servers are virtualized. Specifically, if I'm running any HA application (exchange, databases, etc) I need to ensure that my redundant virtual "servers" aren't located on the same physical server. Using in-house virtualization solutions (VMware, Xen, etc) I can provision accordingly as well as check the virtual - physical arrangement. I could, however, accidentally "vmotion" to the same physical hardware. With EC2, I don't even have the ability at provision time to select different physical servers. Since their Cluster Compute Instances are 1 virtual server per physical server it seems to be the only way to guarantee I don't have a false sense of redundancy. Any ideas or thoughts would be helpful. What are others doing about this problem? If the vendors provided an API where I could get something as simple as a unique physical system identifier I could at least know if I'm going to have an issue. -Tim

• How do I reduce RAM usage on my server?

  I have recently launched a site that is very popular but I am having trouble with scalability. My site makes heavy use of FFmpeg and at peak times RAM usage hits the 2 GB point quickly and the swap file starts getting used. CPU usage starts rising too. Users complain that the site is slow. They say this because all FFmpeg instances run very slow because of the number running at the same time. Users make use of FFmpeg on my server in real time. Is there anything I can consider or do to ease down the usage of the server and RAM just shooting up? Maybe there is something better than FFmpeg (!). Is the only solution "throwing some cash" at a more powerful server? I have given little information, please ask for more, so this problem can be solved.

• Shockwave not responding in Google Chrome

  When browsing in Google chrome, I get an error message The exception unknown software exception (0x40000015) occurred in the application at location 0x0025bf18. I get a pop-up message later saying that the shockwave plugin is not responding. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing Chrome (even by clearing my browsing data while uninstalling) and still the error persists. There are 2 instances of shockwave that I could see in my chrome by typing chrome://plugins. I've tried disabling either of those alternatively too. This prevents me from browsing a lot of sites including FB and Stackoverflow through my favorite browser. I dont have any problem when I work from Internet Explorer. Please help!

  I've managed to strip down my JBoss profile enough that it boots in 1.5 minutes. I started with the web profile and started pulling out stuff I didn't need.   I am currently testing openstack for windows guests (XP and 7). I have deployed openstack "all in one" on system with following specs Processor corei5. (4 physical cores and 8 Threads with HT Technology) RAM 8 GB. HD 500 GB. I have created 4 windows xp guests with 512MB RAM and 1VCPU. On each windows guest i have installed visual studio 2008 only. In nova.conf CPU Over-Commit ratio is 2 for better performance (as mentioned in openstack operation guide). Using KVM as hyerpvisor. I have observed poor performance when simultaneously using visual studio in four windows instances. How i can improve performance ? Should i use KVM or Hyper-V ? or any other suggestion ?

• OS Isolation: Virtualization or Dual-Boot Duplication, a General How To?

  I want to isolate my windows 7 operating system and I have looked into virtualization. This should work with Linux, however, I do want to still have a way to run windows 7 securely, but without significant performance loss, thus eliminating virtualization for that. I know that you can dual boot because I currently do so with my XP/Linux system. Is there a way that I can duplicate my windows 7 system so I can select one at bootup? This way I can ensure that each OS is isolated and not worry about performance loss. However, I am having a lot of trouble finding a solid method for OS duplication?! Is this even possible or must I buy two versions of win7 and somehow install them separately? Any information regarding this would be helpful, thanks! Essentially I want, Two instances of win7 (not necessarily simultaneously running) Each are isolated from one another so that a security breach in one doesn't affect the other. • Why did I loose access to the mailboxes on my old web/mail host after changing to a new one but keeping old MX values

  So I changed the NS records with registrar to point at the new webhosts DNS servers and edited the SOA record there, deleting the new hosts default MX records and instead putting in the old ones for the old web\mail hosts. The website A record is however pointing at the new webhosts servers and the site comes up fine. But none of this should cause me to loose access to mailboxes on my old hosts mail server right? I log into the control panel on the old host, all the mailboxes are there, all the passwords are fine but I can't log in using either webmail or pop3, says incorrect log-in/password. I even created a new mailbox and password for it respectively, but it would not let me log in. For what its worth I did not change\delete the records for 'A' on the old webhost zone file, since I am not hosting the site with them anymore and NS records are pointing to other hosts DNS servers/zone file so that shouldn't matter right? The old hosts mailserver is also not simply down, I can tell because through the control panel I setup a mail forward for one of the existing inboxes and when sending mail to it, it receives it and forwards it fine. So from this I can deduce that I have correctly inputted the old hosts MX records into the zone file hosted on the new hosts DNS and the mail is being sent to the old hosts mail server(s) and is successfully forwarded by it. But why can't I log into those account/inboxes anymore ?

• Should I never put a transactional replication distributor on a subscriber server?

  What factors into choosing a distribution server for transactional replication? In our topology, we've always had the distributor reside on the publishing server. We rarely generate snapshots and performance is good enough, so this is okay for us today. One of our instances is moving to a cluster, so we need to move the distributor off for resilience/symmetry. Right now our two choices are to use a server physically close to the publishers, or our single subscription server. Our publisher is in our main office, and our subscriber is in a colocation facility off-site which our ISP runs. We have a pretty good line to it. The reason we're even considering the latter is to save work and licensing costs.

• Load balanced proxies to avoid an API request limit

  There is a certain API out there which limits the number of requests per day per IP. My plan is to create a bunch of EC2 instances with elastic IPs to sidestep the limitation. I'm familiar with EC2 and am just interested in the configuration of the proxies and a software load balancer. I think I want to run a simple TCP Proxy on each instance and a software load balancer on the machine I will be requesting from. Something that allows the following to return a response from a different IP (round robin, availability, doesn't really matter..) eg. curl http://www.bbc.co.uk -x http://myproxyloadbalancer:port Could anyone recommend a combination of software or even a link to an article that details a pleasing way to pull it off? (My client won't be curl but is proxy aware.. I'll be making the requests from a Ruby script..)
