  I keep reading how everyone states to return XmlDocument when you want to return XML. Is there a way to return raw XML as a string? I have used many web services (written by others) that return string and the string contains XML. If you return XmlDocument how is that method consumed by users that are not on .Net? What is the method to just return the raw XML as string without it having being wrapped with <string></string> Thanks!

• iOS subview widget hooked up to multiple controllers

  So, I want to create a reusable widget as a xib and subview that can appear on a set amount of specific screens. This widget will have three buttons, each with an Action. I want to be able to handle these actions on multiple viewcontrollers. So say ViewControllerA, ViewControllerD, and ViewControllerF can handle the three button events, each in their own way. I've created the nib file. How do I import it into the specific viewcontrollers, and then how do I wire up those events? EDIT: I know that I could potentially get outlets set up via a viewcontroller, but Apple states that UIViewController is for full-screen views only, and my widget is only taking up a small portion of the screen.

• tricks for speeding up tar while tarring up a huge directory of little files?

  I'm trying to tar up a directory that has about 3M tiny files in it. Tar is chugging along, but I'm thinking its going to take longer than I can wait. I'm wondering if telling tar to not store metadata (owner, group, perms) would reduce the churn on reading and re-reading this huge directory and maybe speed things up, and if there is a tar switch that does this. My initial perusal of the man page only gets me something like --no-xattrs, which looks like a start, but I was hoping someone had some specific knowledge.

• Windows boot iso file without press any key

  I'm trying to make an iso file which will boot without any key-press from the user. In Windows iso files, when booting from a cd, there is a message "press any key to boot from cd" which will wait for 5-10 seconds and then, if there is no key-press, it will boot from HD. I searched the web for how to remove this message, and do not press any key and all the answers were "delete bootfix.bin" from the iso. I edited the iso (I've tried several iso files) to remove the bootfix.bin, but now the iso is not correct. Do you have any suggestions?

  I’ve created a GPS program that track positions in realtime in the background for Windows mobile 6.1 in 2008-2009. It ran fine on these devices for many years. For some reason, the same code never worked perfectly on Windows Mobile 6.5. After many hour of operations (mostly when nobody use the device), I receive a “Timeout” (code 258) from the function "WaitForMultipleObjects": this.GPSEvent_WaitValue = WaitForMultipleObjects(2, this.GPSEvent_Handles, 0, 45000); Again, this can work for hours and suddenly, it's just impossible to get another position without : UPDATE: - Restarting the device (GoogleMap confirms that there's no GPS device present!) • How to find dom0 name from hosted domU

  I'm actually testing RHEL 5.3 with Xen between two servers in order to have a disaster recovery solution. So I'm playing with moving my domU from one dom0 server to the other server. Unfortunatly when somebody else move the domU I don't have any clue where my domain is hosted. I'm wondering where I can't find my dom0 name with inside domU. I'm looking for something like the gzonename command on a solaris sparse zone. I check inside /proc/xen but I don't see anything special except the dom0 kernel release. Does anybody know a wait to find this ?

• Automatic VisualState Manager in Silverlight

  If you create a simple button and then choose Edit Template - Edit a Copy, Blend will automatically generate a style area, along with all the button states (MouseEnter, MouseLeave, Pressed, etc). No where in the code behind or auto generated style area does it say that on a "MouseOver" event, change the state to "MouseOver", but it still manages to work! Is the only way to change a button's state have to be done the code behind using the VisualStateManager.GoToState method, or can you change it much like CSS does (a:hover) using the VisualStateManager? From my experience, setting just doesn't seem to do the trick.

• Renaming Files & Folders in Windows 7

  This has been happening to me for some time now. I'm currently running Windows 7 RTM. When I try to rename a new folder that is created (by copying usually), I usually get a "Folder is in use" error. I would have to wait a while before I would be able to modify the folder name. Files behave the same way too. I am thinking that this is because I am sharing the folder, or library, via Homegroup Sharing. Is anyone who is running Windows 7 RTM experience this as well? EDIT 1: I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate.

• Reading bytes from JavaScript string

  I have a string containing binary data in JS. Now I want to read, for example, an integer from it. So I get the first 4 characters, use charCodeAt, do some shifting etc. to get an integer. Problem is that strings in JS are UTF-16 (instead of ASCII) and charCodeAt often returns values higher than 256. The Mozilla reference states that "The first 128 Unicode code points are a direct match of the ASCII character encoding." (what about ASCII values 128?) How can I convert the result of charCodeAt to an ASCII value? Or is there a better way to convert a string of four characters to a 4 byte integer?

I do not know if this is since the iCallbackEventHandler is asynchronous, the validator has not talked to the server yet so the value will always show up blank? Is it impossible to do what i am trying to do by using a iCallbackEventHandler?

  My reward for clicking the "test" button in the APC UPS software was that it completely cut the power to my SQL server. The server promptly rebooted, the SQL service is running (verified by the app on another server that queries it), but the GUI has remained on "applying computer settings" for 20 minutes and counting, and it forbids RDC connections. Since SQL is up, it is fulfilling its key role, but it's obviously not right. What step to take next? Wait longer? Hardware is a Dell Poweredge 2850, internal RAID10.

• Smoothwall: How to stop live network traffic displayed in terminal?

  For our network we are working on building a new firewall box and we just installed Smoothwall on it to test it out. When I start up the box, before the login prompt even appears, all of the live IP traffic is appearing in the terminal (source/destination IPs, MACs, Ports, etc). I wait for the boot sequence to finish, but all I see is this IP traffic. The login prompt never comes up. I finally get sick of waiting and press CTRL + C and it says "Entering Run Level 3" and then I get a login prompt finally. Once I login, the IP traffic continues to fly through the terminal even as I'm trying to type commands. How do I turn this stuff off? Is this the default setting for Smoothwall to have all this IP traffic going by on the screen? It essentially renders using the terminal to being useless.

• Monitor sometimes display weird colors and lines when opening a website that contains a video

  This happens 1/50 times when I open a website that contains a video. I don't know if it happens when I open a flash video, but I am sure it has happened when I've opened a HTML5 video. When it happens I have about 2-3 seconds to press Alt + F4 (to close my browser). If I do it in time the screen will get back to normal. If I wait too long to press Alt + F4, maybe 3+ seconds, my screen won't get back to normal when I press Alt + F4. However, when I get stuck in the weird screen I can do all types of things on the computer. the whole computer does not freeze, because if I for example press Win + L I will hear the Windows logout sound. • Is it possible to put only the boot partition on a usb stick?

  I've been looking at system encryption with ArchLinux and i think I have it pretty much figured out but I have a question about the /boot partition. Once the system is booted up is it possible to unmount the /boot partition and allow the system to continue to run? My thought was to install /boot to a USB stick since it can't be left encrypted and then boot from the USB stick which would boot up the encrypted hard disk. Then I can take the USB key out and just use the system as normal. The reason I want to do this is because if an attacker was able to get physical access to the machine they could modify the /boot partition with a keystroke logger and steal the key and if they already had a copy of the encrypted data they could just sit back and wait for the key. I guess I could come up with a system of verifying that the boot has been untouched at each startup. Has this been done before? Any guidance for implementing it on my own?

  How do I setup an IP alias on a bridge (br0) device on Ubuntu ? If I wait for br0 to come up and then do /sbin/ifconfig br0:0 192.168.10.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 then it works fine.   for best laptop for programming after reading here looks like its Mac vs Lenovo (tablet, because tablet is only why I would choose it over Mac). I do crave that tablet but low speed processor scares me. Intel Core i5 or i7 in Sony Vaio sounds more attractive (2,26 - 3GHz for lower price). Yes, Lenovo can be fast, like x201, but with good specifications its over $2,000 its a little too much. For a lot of development I just don't want to wait every time while program compiles and builds during debugging. I want it fairly fast and smooth. Can anyone advice their experience with Lenovo's tablets?

• Git completion __git_ps1 really slow on Mac

  I've had __git_ps1 in my bash prompt for a while, but just recently (I noticed it after I did some messing around with Homebrew and rbenv), it has slowed down my prompt horribly. When I'm in a git directory I have to wait 3-4 seconds after every command for the prompt to appear. If I just mash return and watch the Activity Monitor, it shows that distnoted and Finder are using more CPU than normal during the delay. Could something git-completion.bash is doing be triggering a notification to Finder? Maybe it involves folder actions or something?

• Keep IMAP messages locally when deleted remotely

  I use my email from my phone and my computer via IMAP. I want to set something up so that if I delete a message via my phone, my computer will still keep the message locally. For example, assume I leave my computer on, with a synchronize interval of 5 minutes. I want to be able to send something from my phone, wait 5 minutes to be sure my computer has downloaded the item from the Sent folder, then delete it from the IMAP sent folder via my phone, but have the computer at home keep it's copy. Is this possible with any readily available email clients out there? I have Thunderbird and Outlook at the moment, but would be willing to learn a new interface for this feature. How can I accomplish this?

  Hello, I would like to represent a structure containing 250 M states(1 bit each) somehow into as less memory as possible (100 k maximum). The operations on it are set/get. I cold not say that it's dense or sparse, it may vary. The language I want to use is C. I looked at other threads here to find something suitable also. A probabilistic structure like Bloom filter for example would not fit because of the possible false answers. Any suggestions please?

FXCop warns me "Do Not Cast Unnecessarily" for this code - but I'm unsure how to rewrite it to make it better. Any ideas?

To use a google API effectively, it is recommended that you register for a key which should resolve this problem. My translate API does not use a key. However to use a key,the site states that we would need to enter a valid URL of ours - e.g. http://localhost etc. However this one is a windows application. How do i get a valid key?

• How do I know if my disks are being hit with too much IO reads or writes or both?

  Hi All, So I know a bit about disk I/O and bottlenecks relating to this especially when relating to databases. But how do I really know what the max IO numbers will be for my disks? What metric might be available to me for working out roughly (but needs to be a good approximation) of how much capacity (if you will) have I got left available in I/O. I've seen it before where things are bubbling along nicely and then all of a sudden, everything screams to a halt, and it ends up being an IO bound problem. Is there a better way to predict when IO is reaching its limits? This article was interesting but not giving the answer I desire. One approach that I can think of, without modifying the entity is via "auditing" all the inserts/updates, as below, the rollback information captures the data just before the updates/modifications on the entity, so that it can be applied in an order when you need to revert.Please note that changing the entity's schema, is not an option.
