• Can I make TCP/IP session to run less than 60 seconds?

  Our server is overloaded with TCP/IP sessions, we have 1200 - 1500 of them. Most of them are hanging in TIME_OUT state. It turns out that a connection in TIME_OUT state occupies a socket until 60 second time-out is elapsed. The problem is that the server gets unresponsive and many clients are not getting served. I have made a simple test: download an XML file from the server with Internet Explorer 8.0 The download finishes in a fraction of second. But then I see that the TCP/IP connection is hanging in TIME_OUT state for 60 seconds. Is there any way to get rid of TIME_OUT waiting or make it less to free the socket for new connections? I understand why TCP/IP connection enters TIME_OUT state, but I don't understand why Internet Explorer does not close the connection after the XML file download is over. The details. Our server runs web service written in Perl (mod-perl). The service provides weather data to clients. Client is a Flash appication (actually Flash ActiveX control embedded in Windows application). • iTunes want to remove my existing apps on iPad

  Here is the situation. I connected my iPad to some new PC, Synced, then ticking Sync Apps from Devices-Apps will give me warning that all existing apps on my iPad will be replaced with those from Library-Apps. But in Library I have just couple old apps, which long time ago I used. So how I can sync the library in iTunes with my existing apps from iPad? EDIT: I have tried to click on Transfer Purchases, but not all of the items went to the library, just few of them.

• How to figure out who owns a worker thread that is still running when my app exits?

  Not long after upgrading to VS2010, my application won't shut down cleanly. If I close the app and then hit pause in the IDE, I see this: The problem is, there's no context. The call stack just says [External code], which isn't too helpful. Here's what I've done so far to try to narrow down the problem: deleted all extraneous plugins to minimize the number of worker threads launched set breakpoints in my code anywhere I create worker threads (and delegates + BeginInvoke, since I think they are labeled "Worker Thread" in the debugger anyway). None were hit. set IsBackground = true for all threads While I could do the next brute force step, which is to roll my code back to a point where this didn't happen and then look over all of the change logs, this isn't terribly efficient. Can anyone recommend a better way to figure this out, given the notable lack of information presented by the debugger? The only other things I can think of include: read up on WinDbg and try to use it to stop anytime a thread is started. At least, I thought that was possible... :) comment out huge blocks of code until the app closes properly, then start uncommenting until it doesn't. UPDATE Perhaps this information will be of use. I decided to use WinDbg and attach to my application. I then closed it, and switched to thread 0 and dumped the stack contents.   Hello guys! Could you please suggest me what kind of software should I use to broadcast live video from webcam? Web-cam is connected via USB to my server. I want to broadcast video from my webcam on my web-page (HTML, ASP.NET - doesn't matter). I don't want to develop video broadcasting from the beginning - it takes a lot of time to implement good system. I'm looking for ready-to-use plug-in/widget for my site. I found ustream.tv, but live video start playing with delay about 2 seconds... You know, it's not real-time. I need something like Skype/icq/ooVoo... plug-in/widget for my web-site. Are these plug-ins exists in internet? P.S. I know that VideoLAN has ActiveX control. Does VLC provide me with real-time video broadcasting from webcam without any delays like Skype? Thank you!

• ext4: error loading journal

  I have an external hard drive with two partitions: A small FAT32 which is mostly empty and works fine and a large ext4 with tons of data, most of which isn't backed up. The ext4 is visible, but can't be mounted. I get an "error loading journal" error. The drive is a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB. Roughly 30GB of that is FAT32 and the rest is the ext4. The light on the enclosure turns red when reading from the bad partition. It was made by Cavalry. There wasn't any warning, but coincidentally, I've been thinking lately that I should get two large capacity drives for real backups. Is there anything that can be done? I'm not even sure I have enough storage to backup everything even if it is redeemable.

• Mercurial changeset hook problem when auto updating. Server permissions maybe??

  I am using Mercurial SCM over a LAN using a normal shared folder instead of http and i'm having a problem getting the auto update hook to run.   I'm trying to write a batch file that will look at the volume label of the current drive and report if it's not equivalent to a certain string. Is there a default variable in the shell for this? Can I define one? Am I SOL and I'll actually have to do some (shudder) programming? EDIT: If this is possible in PowerShell that would work fine. (For the curious, we ship our machines with software cloning as a rapid bootable backup solution since most of our customers are daytraders and aren't interested in RAID due to urgency of getting-the-hell-back-to-work-right-away if there's a software corruption problem, and we want to make it immediately obvious if they're booting to the backup drive unintentionally, like say the primary failed entirely. The hope was just to write a simple batch file that would autostart on boot and throw a warning in the event of a problem.)

  proftpd: pam_ecryptfs: Error getting passwd info for user [USERNAME] I am getting this error in the syslog nearly every time any user connects via FTP, the user is able to connect and the session seems to continue without a hitch. ProFTPD.log shows no error, this warning only show in the syslog. My VPS is running Ubuntu 11.10 and Proftpd 1.3.4rc2 from the Ubuntu Repo, I have made only a few changes to the config (no weird auth methods). This has been going on for quite a while but I can't quite find the cause. Anyone got any ideas?

  So we run Groundworks (with Nagios) on CentOS to monitor our various servers and processes. I have it setup to automatically send emails and SMS texts when things reach a WARNING or CRITICAL state. Normally this works perfectly. However, twice we've had problems with Postfix on that server where Postfix decides to stop sending email. The most recent time lasted 4 days because none of us noticed. That leads me to a important question: how am I supposed to monitor my monitoring server?

• Why does my laptop shut down, does it get too hot?

  When I play games, or use powerful-applications such as Autodesk Maya, my laptop just shuts down, ofcourse without any warning at all. This is what I've tried so far: Cleaned my fan, completely! Checked if I have enough RAM and good enough graphics card, and I do. (6 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce GT540M with 2 GB VRAM) None of these options worked. Even tried to clean my fan twice! Now, I have some options I could also try, but I don't know if that have anything to do with it or not. I was thinking reinstalling my Windows 7, because maybe it has to do something wrong with the installation? My laptop is about a year old, and this problem just happend out of no where, short after I downgraded from Windows 8 Release Preview to my original Windows 7.

• Problems restoring old backups in NetBackup 6.5

  I had a server that was decommissioned & replaced last year, and since the server was no longer in use, I deleted it's client & backup policy from the NetBackup Admin Console shortly afterwards. I recently got a request to restore a file from the old server, however when I specify the source client for the restore, I get an error message saying: WARNING: server (backupserver) does not contain any backups for client (oldserver) using the specified policy type (Standard) as requested by client (backupserver). [Ok] In addition to that error, I can't seem to run a Client Backup report on the old client any more to determine what tapes I need to recall in order to re-index and restore the files... My questions: Does deleting the client somehow remove NetBackups ability to ever restore files from the old system, even if the backups have a retention period of infinity? Is there a way to restore the file from the tape, assuming I can figure out which tape I need?

  we're using lotus notes 8.5 and I have a user who was over his quota as he had sent 6 email with attachement over 800 MB (no comment...) I deleted these oversized email and empty the trash but domino keep sending email warning about quota. I checked in the all documents view and they are no longer there, I re-did an empty the trash. I saw a post on the internet saying to compact his database, when I go under file, application, properties and click on the info tab, I see that he use 35.7% of the 3 GB database. when I click on "compact" I see a message saying the compact of the database is beeing process... the message disapear after about 1 minutes the message disapear but nothing else seem to happen and when I look back later on the space problem has not changed. any advice would be appreciated.

• Problem with parsing strings

  I am trying to put a line of dialog on each of a series of images. To match the dialog line with the correct image, I end each line with a forward slash (/) followed by a number to identify the matching image. I then parse each line to get the dialog and then the reference number for the image. It all works fine except that when I put the dialog line into a textView I get the whole line in the textView instead of the dialog part. What is confusing is that the console seems to indicate that the parsing of the dialog line has been carried out correctly. • Problems with passing an anonymous temporary function-object to a templatized constructor.

  I am trying to attach a function-object to be called on destruction of a templatized class. However, I can not seem to be able to pass the function-object as a temporary. Thus when I create an object of class X, I do not have to keep an object of class writer within it, but only a pointer to Base<T> (I'm not sure if I need the <T> here, but for now its there). The problem is that I seem to have to create an object of writer and then pass it to the constructor of X rather than call it like X<int> xi(writer(); I might be missing something completely stupid and obvious here, any suggestions?

  I am trying to test out a Sphinx cookbook, but I need a database to do so. I have created the database locally, but I need to know where the default path is for the index of the table I created. This is the error I am currently getting when trying to run sphinx because the path to the index is wrong: WARNING: index 'phoneindex': preload: failed to open /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sph: No such file or directory; NOT SERVING FATAL: no valid indexes to serve Where can I find mysql.sph? Or how/when is that file created? Thanks!

  I have two servers which is Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 14.04. When I use Ubuntu 14.04 in my new server and enabled the php-fpm log file found under /etc/php5/fpm/php-fpm.conf that reads as follows: error_log = /var/log/php5-fpm.log I noticed that most of the log that I found in Ubuntu 12.04 is not written in 14.04. For example, if I restart php5-fpm in my Ubuntu 12.04, a restart log is being written, however, this does not happen in 14.04. • Can't install software from Ubuntu software center

  I've been experimenting with Ubuntu 10.04(64bit) inside a VirtualBox VM. This isn't my first experience with Linux, but I'm still very much a Linux noob. Whenever I try to install software from the Ubuntu Software Center, the installation gets interrupted and I get a warning that this installation requires untrusted sources. I can install anything I want using apt-get, it's just the gui that doesn't work. I've done research on the issue and taken the following precautions with no result: under software sources Allowed Canonical partners Allowed source code Changed the download source to main server I get no errors when running an apt-get update. Can anyone shed some light on the issue?

• What are the essential considerations for setting up systems in a location with unreliable power?

  I deal with a lot of remote offices located in parts of the world where the local grid power supply is unreliable. Power can go off anytime with no warning, with outages ranging from minutes to days Power fluctuation is wild, with spikes and brown outs Currently the offices will have some or all of the following: A generator, with an inverter, or some sort of manual switch A big UPS or battery array connecting a number of devices Several smaller APC UPS with computers attached Low cost Voltage Regulators sometimes connected between mains and UPS or device. I know that each of these things needs to be appropriately rated for the equipment to which it is connected (although I am not sure how to calculate the correct rating). The offices will generally have the following equipment (in varying quantities): some sort of internet connection device (VSAT router, ADSL modem, WiMax router) Cisco ASA 5505 firewall a bunch of PCs printers one server I don't seek to replace the advice of an electrician, but in some of these locations they only answer the questions you ask them, so I need to make sure I have enough understanding of the essentials to protect equipment from damage, and possibly get through some power cuts.

• System Center 2012 Service Manager change request status stuck at new

  The guy that built and setup this system left rather abruptly and I've taken over. My current issues are I have several change requests that are stuck at New. They do not move to Pending or In Progress. The system is not sending emails when incidents are getting assigned to people. This used to work on this system. I have done a lot of searching and the usual solution to this of stopping and restarting the system center services does not help. Can anyone give me any ideas of where else to look? Update: From all the searching I have done it seemed like I was at the point of re-installing. My initial installation of SCSM 2012 was on a machine that was upgraded from SCSM 2010 and also hosted SCCM 2007 and WSUS. We decided to give it a fresh start on a new server by installing a second instance of the SCSM server on a brand new 2008 R2 server then promoting the new server to the workflow master using the procedures outlined in this article - Dealing with Multiple management Servers. I've gotten to the point where we have both the old and the new server up and the new server has been promoted. I had hopped to get spammed by emails all the sudden due to the workflow taking off, but no such luck. Once all the clients are reconfigured to point to the new server we still plan to decommission the old server but at this point it seems to be that the problem is in the database. Short of any other input from the community, my next plan is to install a 180 day trial on a test server, complete with a separate database so that I can do a side by side comparison between a completely fresh install and what I have now and see if I can find any differences. While that install is running I also plan on investigating the event logs to see if there is anything in there that can shed some light on what is happening on the new server. Update 2: So I've now got a test SCSM server up with a completely fresh install including Database and it seems to be able to transition Change Requests from New to In Progress. I'm attempting to find differences between the two. Stay Tuned! This lead me to Event ID 2800 logged after installing secondary server for System Center 2012 Service Manager SP1. I contacted MS to obtain the hotfix, BIG warning here, turns out the hotfix is not so "hot". In order to apply this hotfix, you have to uninstall then reinstall using the files they supply. :( This is where I am at now ... Update 4: Not much luck after the re-install. The errors in the event log have gone away on the new server but the workflows still aren't running and neither the event log nor the workflow status screen seem to indicate why. I've done a comparison of the Activity and the Change Request Event Workflows and I've removed everything from the production system that is not in my fresh test system (which is everything), shut down the services, cleared out the cache folders and restarted the services and still no joy. At the moment the only thing I can think to do is either a)nuke the entire system including the database and start over, losing all of our data in the process or b)contact MS (which is probably going to cost us a butt load of money and time in the end to only advise us to do the same thing. Maybe more idea's will come after coffee ... No answers came after coffee. Attempting to contact MS. Managed to get to their first line of defense, gave them our SA number and someone is supposed to call me back. I am trying to log into my incident on their site to update my ticket with the link to this thread but when i click on the link in the email they sent me it goes to a "Sorry, the page you requested is not available" page ... Linux is looking better and better all the time.

• Windows 7: This notification icon is currently not active

  Some time this week, without any major change done to one of my x64 Windows 7 computers, the Media eject icon goes missing in the systray taskbar area. When I attempt to reset the notification settings, i see this "This notification icon is currently not active" info warning Initially KB945011 managed to restore the icon after a reboot. But now it appears to have disappeared again. It seems to have disappeared (cannot really confirm) after I unlock the physical logon session (which was previously rerouted to a virtual Remote Desktop session). Anybody have knowledge on possible causes to this missing behaviour? UPDATE 1 Feb 11 It seems that happens often when I remote desktop to the computer, I see it from the remote screen, but when i unlock the screen physically, it disappears. It would reappear when I connect to remote desktop again. Hmmmmm.

• Browser download file prompt using javascript

  hi, I was wondering if there was any method to implement browser's download file prompt using javascript. My reason - well users will be uploading files to a local fileserver which cannot be accessed from the webserver. In other words, both will be on different domains! e.g. let’s say websites hosted on www.xyz.com, but files would reside on local file server with address like \10.10.10.01\Files\file.txt. How am I uploading/transferring file to local fileserver... using ACTIVEX(yikes) & VBscript!!!! (don’t ask :-) so i am storing local file path in my database and binding that data to a grid. So when the user clicks on that link, the file opens in a window (using javascript). Problem is certain file types like text, jpg, pdf, etc open inside browser window. How would i be able to implement content-type or content-disposition using client side scripting? Is that even possible? hoping my description was clear. Any ideas? EDIT: the local file server has a window's shared folder on which the files are saved.

  Access requires a username and password Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection) I am getting this above message. I have hosted a website in godaddy hosting space. But when i run it.. it is prompt for User name and Password (above message). I am not using windows authentications in my website.... Moreover, i have test my website code on testing server....it never prompts for this message unless Integrated Windows Authentication is checked. Any help is appreciated.. Thanks

• Problem accessing the remote working space on my new SBS 2008 box

  This supposedly easy to install OS is starting to drive me nuts... SYMPTOMS: When trying to connect to the remote workplace I get (and ignore) the security warning because I am currently testing with the self issued certificate. After loggin in the remote workplace's main screen displays but the images on it do not load. When I try to click the email link I am thrown back to the login screen. If I try the login to exchange directly by typing in the remote.mydomain.com/owa address I get a 403 error that I am denied access. The problem occurs on both a vista and a win 7 machine. It seems that some security setting is playing tricks with me. How can I troubleshoot this?

• Outbound Traffic Logging on ASA 5520 possible?

  Taking a look at the ASDM (6.4) for my ASA 5520, I get a nice summary of the traffic status, with items like "interface traffic usage", and "connections per second". This works well, but only shows the data for the last 5-6 minutes or so. Recently, I've been asked whether it's possible to pull up this same type of traffic data for a particular time in the past. (Such as: Find the traffic usage for a 3 minute period from date xx:xx:xx @ time xx:xx:xx) I've noticed that my ASA 5520 is logging the warning, errors, etc that it is processing. But traffic data is not logged (yet) according to my search through the ASA. Is logging the traffic data amounts (as wondered above) actually a possibility? Is there any way to find out the past data for traffic and such values? Thanks!
