• Example: Cross Cutting Concerns of an Application

  A little while ago I was given an opportunity to design and implement a new system that sent data via an HTTP Post method and then processed the results that were returned so that they could be inserted in to a database. My system had eight core concerns that it needed to fulfill. Eight Core Concerns Database Access Data Entities Worker Result Processing Process Flow Manager Email/Notification Error Handling Logging Of these eight, five were actually cross cutting concerns. 5 Cross Cutting Concerns Database Access Data Entities Email/Notification Error Handling Logging These five cross cutting concerns were determined after I created an aspect oriented model to help identity the system components that could be factored out into separate components.  These separated components would then be included in the system so that they could be used by various other components.  These five components allow all of the other components to access the database, store data, send notifications, handle errors, and log all system events.  Thus, these components are used to share unique aspects to the system via their implementation. The use of Aspect oriented architecture greatly helped me define what components I needed to create and what each of those components could do.  It also showed how all of the other aspects depended on each other so that each component did not have to re-implement code that was already created in the existing system.

  I try to submit my app with the command in the title, but the build failed: Error message: W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net precise Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY * * is my key (don't know it is safe to share it) If i run this command: sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys ****** It is said my key isn't change (so don't need to add it again). • Custom widgets/controls in application indicators

  I want to develop an app for ubuntu, that integrates inside the calendar indicator/menu. It should allow to enter info right from it, and have several controls like input boxes, drop downs, spinners and buttons. Is this possible to integrate/replace the standard date/time indicator? If not, is it possible to create it as a separate indicator that when clicked opens a popup with all the controls and stuff? I want it to look as part of the sys tray and not as a separate desktop app. I'm using Quickly for this. Thanks for your help!

  I've been reading questions and discussions on this website but haven't made an account to start talking or asking anything I had doubts in so please bare with a newbie here. What are specific languages that have are able to make a program that will record, and organize things such as hours, salaries, payments? Also solve business problems, mostly with payments, how much money there will be after interest, taxes and such. Anyway, I've been looking into COBOL, C++, Java, HTML, JavaScript, VB.NET and a couple more. Which ones should I focus on and look into more? I very much appreciate any answers. Thank you.

• Successful business proposal; How to negotiate with employer for bonuses on the project [on hold]

  I'm the lone programmer at a small business which is falling head-over-heels for a website proposal I wrote on a project they were considering. Next week is the company meeting where it will be formally presented to the owners, and if the project is accepted it could become a (relatively) huge revenue stream when finished. Despite all the buzz I have no financial stake in the success or failure of the project. I know I haven't been profitable and they can't pay me what I should be making. I'm also the only non-management employee with no way to earn a bonus, despite having one of the most demanding jobs in the office. I'd like to know if there's any resources or advice for programmers or employees to negotiate and get invested in a projects success. Just a way to guarantee if I prove my worth I can move up a rung or two.

• .NET app - Should we use SQL Server and duplicate some reference data from an external Oracle DB? Or use Oracle and have a DB link?

  We're looking to migrate some existing Excel/Access processes into a new system which will provide the users with a Silverlight frontend to run and view the reports instead of using MS Access. The initial idea was to have SQL Server 2008 as RDBMS. The problem is that we've got some static data such as country codes, counterparties, etc which live in an existing Oracle DB. Since we do not want to duplicate that data (if possible), we were thinking of having a DB link between SQL Server and Oracle, but our firm does not allow that. So the options are either duplicate the data or use Oracle as RDBMS - surprise, the firm does allow DB links between Oracle databases. The initial idea was also to use WCF RIA Services, Entity Framework, etc which we're not sure they play well with Oracle, that's why it was decided to go with SQL Server in the first place. Would you advise to go for Oracle so that we can just link the static data? Or use SQL Server 2008 and replicate it because it's "safer" to stay within the Microsoft land? To use or not to use Entity Framework and WCF RIA Services at all? Regards. UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your answers. Nothing is set in stone yet. We'll try to import the data instead of linking, as if the other DB goes down, our system can still carry on. We're likely to use SQL Server just because most developers are more experienced with it. Even if we used RIA Services, we can swap out the Data Access Layer and use other frameworks such those mentioned below.

• Getting Started with Puppet on Oracle Solaris 11

  One of the exciting enhancements with Oracle Solaris 11.2 has been the introduction of Puppet. While upstream Puppet did have some rudimentary support for Oracle Solaris 11, Drew Fisher and Ginnie Wray worked tirelessly to add enhance the Oracle Solaris Puppet offering. We've talked to customers over the past few years and asked them what their problems were and what technologies they were using, particularly for configuration management. Puppet came up time and time again, and it made a huge amount of sense bringing it as a 1st class citizen in the Oracle Solaris platform. So what is Puppet, and why is it useful? To quote from PuppetLabs, the guys who are responsible for creating Puppet: Puppet is a declarative, model-based approach to IT automation, helping you manage infrastructure throughout its lifecycle, from provisioning and configuration to orchestration and reporting. Using Puppet, you can easily automate repetitive tasks, quickly deploy critical applications, and proactively manage change, scaling from 10s of servers to 1000s, on-premise or in the cloud. What's more, with Puppet support for Oracle Solaris, administrators can now manage a completely heterogeneous data center from a single or series of Puppet masters. Better still, it's an excellent tool when combined with our new compliance framework to ensure you're meeting your compliance regulations. We're not stopping there of course, and we'll enhance our offerings over time, and work with PuppetLabs to get some of this support upstream (or into the Puppet Forge). • Oracle Virtualbox does not open since upgrade

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, I have been unable to restart my Oracle virtualbox. jan@jan-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup sudo: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: command not found Where do I go from here? Can anyone help, please? I tried to install virtualbox via these commands: echo "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian $(lsb_release -sc) contrib" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtualbox.list wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtu...racle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add - sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install virtualbox-4.2 Attempts to install via package manager vbox would not start. These error reports are received: Because the USB 2.0 controller state is part of the saved VM state, the VM cannot be started.To fix this problem, either install the 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack' or disable USB 2.0 support in the VM settings (VERR_NOT_FOUND). Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {db7ab4ca-2a3f-4183-9243-c1208da92392} I installed the extension pack, no change in result. I have added myself as user, but the error report says user must be added, when I redo add user, it says user is already added. The following outputs were also received:   Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Nuwe skelm. Implementation of the USB 2.0 controller not found! I cannot access the USB 2.0 setting to disable it. Where do I go from here, please?

• Java stored procedures in Oracle, a good idea?

  I'm considering using a Java stored procedure as a very small shim to allow UDP communication from a PL/SQL package. Oracle does not provide a UTL_UDP to match its UTL_TCP. There is a 3rd party XUTL_UDP that uses Java, but it's closed source (meaning I can't see how it's implemented, not that I don't want to use closed source). An important distinction between PL/SQL and Java stored procedures with regards to networking: PL/SQL sockets are closed when dbms_session.reset_package is called, but Java sockets are not. So if you want to keep a socket open to avoid the tear-down/reconnect costs, you can't do it in sessions that are using reset_package (like mod_plsql or mod_owa HTTP requests). I haven't used Java stored procedures in a production capacity in Oracle before. This is a very large, heavily-used database, and this particular shim would be heavily used as well (it serves as a UDP bridge between a PL/SQL RFC 5424 syslog client and the local rsyslog daemon). Am I opening myself up for woe and horror, or are Java stored procedures stable and robust enough for usage in 10g? I'm wondering about issues with the embedded JVM, the jit, garbage collection, or other things that might impact a heavily used database.

• Oracle Solutions supporting ICAM deployments

  The ICAM architecture has become the predominant security architecture for government organizations.  A growing number of federal, state, and local organizations are in various stages of using Oracle ICAM solutions.  The relevance of ICAM has clearly extended beyond the Federal ICAM mandates to any government program that must enable standards based interoperability like health exchanges and public safety.  The state government endorsed version of ICAM was just released with the NASCIO SICAM Roadmap.   You may of noticed that the latest version of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework is V4.0.1. The last release of the Framework was V2.2. So what happened to V3? The short answer is that there is no V3 of the framework. The long answer is that the Oracle Utilities Application Framework has long been associated with Oracle Utilities Customer Care And Billing and Oracle Enterprise Taxation Management only. As more and more of the Oracle Tax And Utilities products are migrated onto the framework the association betweent eh original products on the framework is less appropriate. Therefore it was decided to pick a version number to emphasize the decouplinf of the releases of the Framework with any particular product. To illustrate this, the Oracle Mobile Workforce Management (MWM) V2.0.0 product uses Oracle Utilities Applicaton Framework V4.0.1. If we used the old numberings schema then MWM would be V4.0.1 which makes no sense, given the last release of MWM was V1.x The framework has its own development team and product management. It basicaly has its own schedule (though it is influenced by the products that use it still - which makes sense). So that s the reasoning around the version numbering change for the framework.

  Oracle Technology Network (OTN) published the "How to Set Up a Hadoop Cluster Using Oracle Solaris" OOW 2013 Hands-On Lab. This hands-on lab presents exercises that demonstrate how to set up an Apache Hadoop cluster using Oracle Solaris 11 technologies such as Oracle Solaris Zones, ZFS, and network virtualization. Key topics include the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and the Hadoop MapReduce programming model. We will also cover the Hadoop installation process and the cluster building blocks: NameNode, a secondary NameNode, and DataNodes. In addition, you will see how you can combine the Oracle Solaris 11 technologies for better scalability and data security, and you will learn how to load data into the Hadoop cluster and run a MapReduce job. • Oracle is Child&rsquo;s Play&hellip;in NSW

  A few weeks ago, my colleague Michael Seback posted a blog entry on Oracle’s acquisition of Haley.  We recently read  an interesting report from Down Under, and here was our press release on the  implementation of Oracle’s Policy automation software in New South Wales, which I thought I would share. We always love hearing about our software “at work”, and especially in the Public Sector- social services area, where it makes a big difference to people’s lives. Here were some of the reasons, why NSW chose Oracle software: “One of the things Oracle’s Policy Automation system is good at is allowing you take decision  trees and rules that are obviously written in English and code them up using very much a natural language approach,” said Holling (CIO for Human Services). “So it was quite a short process to translate the final set of rules that were written on paper into business rules that were actually embedded in the system.” “Another reason why we chose Oracle’s Automation tool is because with future versions of Siebel it comes very tightly integrated with that. It allows us to then to basically take the results of the Policy Automation survey and actually populate our client management system database with that information,” said Holling. As per Surend Dayal, North America VP, Oracle’s Policy automation has applications across a wide range of industries, including public sector—especially health and human services—also financial services, insurance, and even airline rewards programs.
