• Can't install any drivers at all on Windows 8. Error 0x000003F9

  I suddenly can't install any drivers at all on my Windows 8 Pro x64 install. It doesn't matter what kind of driver it is, nothing will install. Everything ends with error 0x000003F9: The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format. When Windows Update tries to install a driver, it just gives error code 800703F9 and says that "Windows Update ran into a problem." I've already done a scan of system files with sfc, tried another user account, done a chkdsk, and a few more things, but nothing works. The problem started when I tried to install drivers for my printer earlier today and suddenly started getting messages saying that "Windows Modules Installer has stopped working." I decided to restart and was being greeted with the recovery boot options. I shut the computer down, but when I booted it back up the same thing happened, so I did a repair your pc, and was able to boot into the OS properly. Then I rebooted into my external drive and did a chkdsk on the Windows 8 install that started acting funny. When I booted back into Windows 8, I wasn't able to install any drivers. They all keep coming up with the same error. And I can't seem to find anything at all on this issue. Any help would be much appreciated. • How to Add a File from my source tree to Maven Site

  I have a Maven 2 RESTful application using Jersey/JAXB. I generate the JAXB beans from a schema file, where the schema file is in my resources directory, e.g., src/main/resources/foo.xsd. I want to include foo.xsd file in the generated Maven site for my project, so that clients can see the XML schema when writing RESTful calls. How can I include foo.xsd in the site? I could have a copy of the file in src/main/site/..., and then update my site.xml to point to it (or have a .apt whose contents point to it), but I don't like that because I'm still tweaking foo.xsd, and don't want to have to remember to copy it each time I update it. And that's just bad practice. I also tried having a .apt file that has a link to the foo.xsd which gets copied to the target/classes directory. That works until I do a site:deploy, because that only copies the target/site directory. Thanks, Charles

Without cloning I would just do: $("#list_item_template a").attr("onclick", "SomeFunction()"); However, I need to perform that operation on the cloned copy, not on the html currently on the page. • Copying data across tabs

  Hello, I got two different forms in two different tabs. One has data from our system and the other one is an interface of another, external, system in wich we need to copy data into (XML or API integration not an option here) The this is that, having open both forms - in two different tabs - i need a greasemonkey script or something similar that allows my to copy data from one form to the other (using the getValue method in Javascript). The problem right now is that I cannot figure out how to reference with a greasemonkey script one particular tab or window (to rad data from or write data to). Do you think it would be possible to do what I'm thinking to do? THANKS

• Passing complex objects to javascript via IScriptControl

  I'm playing around with a asp.net page that's using the IScriptControl interface to pass data from the code-behind to the custom javascript object running on the browser. I'm passing a number of properties via IScriptControl.GetScriptDescriptors(), and they're all working fine, except for one. That one is a class derived from System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary<. And even that one has been working for me, so long as the elements in the collection were scalars - ints, doubles, and strings. But when I tried to pass a member of a class, it showed up as a null object in the javascript. The class in question is marked [Serializable]. I changed it to a struct, and got the same behavior. It looks as if the serializer used in IScriptControl does a shallow copy. I need a deep copy. Any ideas?

  I recently obtained a copy of Mac OS Snow Leopard in VMware (.vmdk) format. It is incredibly slow when running virtualised and I would like to just install it directly to my machine dual booting with Windows 7 (32 bit). Is there any way preferably free that I can convert a VMware .vmdk image to an .iso I can burn to a DVD to boot from? I've seen this done in Linux and presume there is a way to do it in Windows as well. Downloading another copy that isn't a VMware image isn't an option considering my broadband plan is creeping closer to its limit for the month.

  When using SQL Server Express 2005's User Instance feature with a connection string like this: <add name="Default" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress; AttachDbFilename=C:\My App\Data\MyApp.mdf; Initial Catalog=MyApp; User Instance=True; MultipleActiveResultSets=true; Trusted_Connection=Yes;" /> We find that we can't copy the database files MyApp.mdf and MyApp_Log.ldf (because they're locked) even after stopping the SqlExpress service, and have to resort to setting the SqlExpress service from automatic to manual startup mode, and then restarting the machine, before we can then copy the files. It was my understanding that stopping the SqlExpress service should stop all the user instances as well, which should release the locks on those files. But this does not seem to be the case - could anyone shed some light on how to stop a user instance, such that it's database files are no longer locked? Update OK, I stopped being lazy and fired up Process Explorer. Lock was held by sqlserver.exe - but there are two instances of sql server: sqlserver.exe PID: 4680 User Name: DefaultAppPool sqlserver.exe PID: 4644 User Name: NETWORK SERVICE The file is open by the sqlserver.exe instance with the PID: 4680 Stopping the "SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)" service, killed off the process with PID: 4644, but left PID: 4680 alone. Seeing as the owner of the remaining process was DefaultAppPool, next thing I tried was stopping IIS (this database is being used from an ASP.Net application). Unfortunately this didn't kill the process off either. Manually killing off the remaining sql server process does remove the open file handle on the database files, allowing them to be copied/moved. Unfortunately I wish to copy/restore those files in some pre/post install tasks of a WiX installer - as such I was hoping there might be a way to achieve this by stopping a windows service, rather then having to shell out to kill all instances of sqlserver.exe as that poses some problems: Killing all the sqlserver.exe instances may have undesirable consequencies for users with other Sql Server instances on their machines. I can't restart those instances easily. Introduces additional complexities into the installer. Does anyone have any further thoughts on how to shutdown instances of sql server associated with a specific user instance?

  Backround: Suppose I have the following Git URLs (hosted on github) http://github.com/mikl/drupal.git git://github.com/mikl/drupal.git (Git read-only) I am interested in having a local copy of this repository so I can pratice working with branches in git and see how my local working tree can change depending on which branch I am working with. Questions: To get started, I set up a local directory and do git clone git://github.com/mikl/drupal.git ... Will this clone all of the branches? Or will it only clone master? The web front-end for github gives me a "drop down" menu that allows me to switch branches ... Does changing this drop-down actually change which branch I will be grabbing when I run git clone? If I want a new copy of this repository on my local machine, but I am interested in only two branches of this repository and I want to ignore all the rest, what command do I use to ensure I clone only those two branches and nothing else (assume one of the branches is master)?

• .NET 2.0 Process Elevation for App Installation

  We have an application written in both C++ and .NET that installs for all users in the Program Files folder. This application downloads new versions of itself (as MSI installers) and spawns the new installer process to replace itself. The install process as it exists today: Copy an install manager app (C#, .NET 2.0) to the temp directory. Call this 'Manager' Manager is executed with elevated privs per this article. The original application exits. Manager spawns the MSI installer (with elevated privs, since the copy is elevated) Manager spawns the new version of the app. The bug: The newly installed app is running in an elevated state. This causes problems I won't enumerate here. Ideally, the launch of the newly installed app would be run with the permissions of the original user. I can't figure out how to demote the app back to being the standard user after elevation. An inelegant hack: (yeah, yeah, this whole process is inelegant anyway) Copy the install manager to the temp directory Run the install manager with standard user privs. Lets call this instance 'LowlyManager'. Original application exits. LowlyManager spawns the app again, this time with elevated privs. Let's name this instance 'UpperManagement' UpperManagement spawns the installer UpperManagement exits gracefully, returning the exit code of the installer. LowlyManager interprets the error code from UpperManagement, and spawns the newly installed application. This time as the original invoker. Is there a better way to do this? (I've left out a bunch of other details before and after these steps that make the process smoother for the user, but this should be enough to understand the core of the problem I'm trying to solve.) Other requirements: We can't install as a per-user app The user shouldn't be presented with an authentication dialog box if UAC would have simply asked "are you sure you want to allow this?". I think this might kill a solution using WindowsImpersonationContext, but I'm not sure. The system needs to work on XP, Vista, and Windows 7 (even if there is a separate process for XP).

• Creating a MSI patch (.msp) by hand?

  Our team has recently been considering pushing out a minor registry fix to users to modify one particular problematic key. Pretty straightforward stuff, just needed to update 1 key/value inside the registry. So at the moment, we are using Wix to build .msi installers for the product. While looking into Wix's support for generating .msp patch files, it seems that the only way to create an .msp is a somewhat overcomplicated multi-step process to: Get a copy of the original MSI, and compile a new copy of the fixed MSI Write a new Wix file that points to both installers Compile the Wix file into a .wixobj with Candle to a .psp Run Torch/Pyro over before/after snapshots of the original installers and the .psp, or alternatively using MsiMsp.exe Now my question is, can't I simply describe the registry change into a Wix file and directly compile it into the .msp, without step 1 and 4 - which is a huge amount of effort for just a simple change?

  I'm trying to get my app to install in /opt/[app_name] using setuptools. My app uses a namespace package. To install I run sudo python setup.py install --prefix=/opt/[app_name]/ --install-lib=/opt/[app_name]/ --install-scripts=/opt/[app_name]/ When I install it this was setuptools does not copy init.py in to my namespace package so when I come to run my app, python does not treat it as a package and I get import errors. if I create the init.py file my app works fine. How do I get setuptool to copy over the init.py file when using --install-lib and --prefix? Thanks Sam

• How to merge an improperly created "branch" that isn't really a branch (wasn't created by an svn cop

  I'm working on a team with lots of people who are pretty unfamiliar with the concepts of version control systems, and are just kind of doing whatever seems to work, by trial and error. Someone created a "branch" from the trunk that is not ancestrally related to the trunk. My guess is it went something like this: They created a folder in branches. They checked out all the code from the trunk to somewhere on their desktop. They added all that code to the newly created folder as though it was a bunch of brand new files. So the repository isn't aware that all that code is actually just a copy of the trunk. When I look at the history of that branch in TortoiseSVN, and uncheck the "Stop on copy/rename" box, there is no revision that has the trunk (or any other path) under the "Copy from path" column. Then they made lots of changes on their "branch". Meanwhile, others were making lots of changes on the trunk. We tried to do a merge and of course it doesn't work. Because, the trunk and the fake branch are not ancestrally related. I can see only two ways to resolve this: Go through the logs on the "branch", look at every change that was made, and manually apply each change to the trunk. Go through the logs on the trunk, look at every change that was made between revision 540 (when the "branch" was created) and HEAD, and manually apply each change to the "branch". This involves 7 revisions one way or 11 revisions the other way, so neither one is really that terrible. But is there any way to cause the repository to "realize" that the branch really IS ancestrally related even though it was created incorrectly, so that we can take advantage of the built-in merging functionality in Eclipse/TortoiseSVN? (You may be wondering: Why did your company hire these people and allow them to access the SVN repository without making sure they knew how to use it properly first?! We didn't -- this is a school assignment, which is a collaboration between two different classes -- the ones in the lower class were given a very quick hand-wavey "overview" of SVN which didn't really teach them anything. I've asked everyone in the group to please PLEASE read the svn book, and I'll make sure we (the slightly more experienced half of the team) keep a close eye on the repository to ensure this doesn't happen again.)

• Creating xaml 'template' for multiple pages

  Hey, I'm developing a Silverlight application for the first time. I've gone through some tutorials, but I can't seem to find anything that helps me with this particular problem. I would like a set of buttons to be present on all of my pages (like a template). When a button is pressed, I would like the ContentGrid to slide out and a new ContentGrid slide in (with the relevant .xaml file being loaded). Are there any tutorials showing the best way to do this? From samples I've seen, they only seem to transition between two pages, so copy-pasting the group of buttons on each xaml page isn't too much of a problem. However, with more pages, it would be inefficient to copy-paste the base layout each time. Thanks for any suggestions

In short, the process I am following is: Setting up an HTTP connection with the INTERNET_FLAG_RESYNCHRONIZE flag and calling HttpSendRequest(); then checking the HTTP status code and finding it to be "200". If the remote file is updated, but remains the same size as the local copy: The local file is unchanged after running the app. If I call HttpQueryInfo() with HTTP_QUERY_LAST_MODIFIED after sending the request, it gives me the actual last modified time of the server's file, which I can see is different from the local file I am trying to have it overwrite. If the remote file is updated, and the file size becomes different from the local copy: It is downloaded and overwrites the local copy as expected. I thought that specifying INTERNET_FLAG_RESYNCHRONIZE would force the file to resynch if it's out of date. Do I have it all wrong? Is this just how it's supposed to work?

• How to prevent application thievery (specific to Android applications)?

  Hey, I was wondering what the most effective way of preventing people from stealing my application (downloading a copy of the .apk online rather than buying it). I've spent a lot of time on one in particular (Droidbox) and won't be releasing Sync until I can guarantee that the people who are providing illegal copies of the pro version aren't able to. Anyone implemented this? I've tried checking my package signature verses an the signature of an unsigned copy but it appears to be the same - perhaps I'm doing something incorrectly here. I'm unsure whether people actually distribute the signed .apk in which case I don't think signature validation would work to begin with... Please note, this question is specific to Android Marketplace Applications - the difference being, application delivery is out of my hands and I have no way of linking between a legitimate purchase and an illegal download.

• iPhone - Get a pointer to the data behind CGDataProvider?

  I'm trying to take a CGImage and copy its data into a buffer for later processing. The code below is what I have so far, but there's one thing I don't like about it - it's copying the image data twice. Once for CGDataProviderCopyData() and once for the :getBytes:length call on imgData. I haven't been able to find a way to copy the image data directly into my buffer and cut out the CGDataProviderCopyData() step, but there has to be a way...any pointers? • Tool to convert inline C# into a code behind file

  Hi I have a number of legacy web controls (ascx) that contains huge amounts of inline C#. The forms contain a number of repeated and duplicate code. Our first plan is to move the code into code behinds per file, then refactor etc... were doing this to upgrade the client to the latest version of their cms At the moment we are going to have to manually copy and paste from hundreds of files, create a code behind, copy the code, add the namespaces based on the client-side imports and then do any tidying up does anybody PLEASE know of a tool that can do the majority of this work for us ? • Mouse configurable buttons for programming

  Different mouse models has been already discussed. But all these mouse got configurable buttons. Has a programmer, how do you set them? I use The Microsoft Intellimouse Optical. So set the Left side button to "Copy" and the Right side button to "Paste". I did not set the Wheel click to anything. I'm curious to see if there is any better setup? UPDATE : I'm trying to find some interesting key I could map to my mouse buttons. Copy & paste are the best I' found so far, but i just want to know if there is something that could be more useful when programming.

  Greetings! Last semester in college, my teacher in the Computer Languages class taught us the esoteric language named Whitespace. In the interest of learning the language better with a very busy schedule (midterms), I wrote an interpreter and assembler in Python. An assembly language was designed to facilitate writing programs easily, and a sample program was written with the given assembly mnemonics. Now that it is summer, a new project has begun with the objective being to rewrite the interpreter and assembler for Whitespace 0.3, with further developments coming afterwards. Since there is so much extra time than before to work on its design, you are presented here with an outline that provides a revised set of mnemonics for the assembly language. This post is marked as a wiki for their discussion. Have you ever had any experience with assembly languages in the past? Were there some instructions that you thought should have been renamed to something different? • Escape characters during paste in vim

  I copy stuff from output buffers into C++ code I'm working on in vim. Often this output gets stuck into strings. And it'd be nice to be able to escape all the control characters automatically rather than going back and hand editing the pasted fragment. As an example I might copy something like this: error in file "foo.dat" And need to put it into something like this std::string expected_error = "error in file \"foo.dat\"" I'm thinking it might be possible to apply a replace function to the body of the last paste using the start and end marks of the last paste, but I'm not sure how to make it fly.

• How can I save a Outlook Message from Clipboard to a file?

  If I select an Outlook message from my Inbox and copy it to the clipboard I can paste it as an *.msg file to the Desktop. Now I want to implement the same feature to my application. The Clipboard object contains the following elements: RenPrivateSourceFolder RenPrivateMessages RenPrivateItem FileGroupDescriptor FileGroupDescriptorW FileDrop FileNameW FileName FileContents Object Descriptor System.String UnicodeText Text FileGroupDescriptor contains a MemoryStream with the filename (Subject.msg) but I don't know how to create a copy from the outlook message from the Clipboard data, since none of the elements seem to contain the message itself. Any Suggestions?

• Source code comparison app that doesn't require files?

  I'm looking for an easy-to-use, free source code comparison app for Windows, which will highlight differences side-by-side between two pieces of source code. Some apps get close to what I want, but are too restrictive by requiring you load in entire files and compare them in their entirety. Sometimes I just want to compare a section of my file, such as a single function, which may be in totally different locations in the two versions I'd be comparing, making it hard to find in both panes in large files. Basically, I'd like to be able to simply edit/copy/paste the content in both panes rather than have the restriction of using files. That way I can copy and paste one function into one pane and another into the other, editing/re-ordering as necessary. (Note that I realize there are other comparison app recommendation threads out there, but I'm having a hard time finding a free app that isn't a strict file-to-file comparison app) Thanks for any pointers or links, thanks!
