  In MS SQL server, can i use a SELECT statement to define a CHECK constraint? Say i have to work with two tables "Customer Master" and "Indian Customer" in ideal situation both tables are compleatly different, and are not interrelated in anyways. however they share the same database Content of "Customer Master": CustomerName (colomn): a, b, c, d, e Branchlocation (colomn): IN, AU, IN, IN, UK Content of "Indian Customer": customerID (colomn): 1, 2, 3 CustomerName (colomn): a, c, d customer details (colomn): details1, details, details . . . In Table "Indian Customer" i want to put a constraint so that the users entring data in this table should not be able to enter customers that dont exist in "Customer Master" or whose branch location is not IN. also the tables are in the same project but are not directly related.

  Are there any standard or "best practice" ways of limiting feature functionality for a particular application? Example: We have a product with a variety of features, and our customers can pick and choose which features they would like to use, and the cost of the product varies based on which features they are actually using. In the past, we have distributed along with our software installer an encrypted license file that contains information about the customer, as well as the collection of features that they have enabled. In code, we read from the license file and enable the functionality according to the license file. This seems to work fine, except there a few disadvantages: Upgrading users with new functionality can be sort of a pain If a particular feature shows up in multiple places throughout the application, a developer might not realize that this feature should be licensed, and forget to check the license file before granting functionality to the user If the license file becomes corrupted, deleted, moved, renamed, etc. the application will not run We're getting ready to roll out a new set of features, and I was just curious what others in the community have done to tackle this problem?

  I am new to .NET, and don't have much experience in programming. What is the standard way of handling user authentication in .NET in the following situation? 1.In Process A, User inputs ID/Password 2.Process A sends the ID/Password to Process B over a nonsecure public channel. 3.Process B authenticates the user with the recieved ID/Password what are some of the standard cryptographic algorithms I can use in above model? The users(customers that bought my company's software) will be running the software(Process A) locally in their computer(connected to internet).   Hi Im writing a notification platform using C# and NHibernate. Im having difficulties with my queries. I have a Customer entity - which contains a AssessmentCompleted Property. A notification should be sent out 21 months after certification. So my query needs to include all customers where their AssessmentCompletedDate + 21months < currentDate. How do I achieve this? Is there a month add method in nhibernate? I need to add 21 months to each AssessmentCompletedProperty...My query needs to look something like: SELECT new Notification(c.Id, c.Description, c.AssessmentCompleted + 21 FROM Cusomter c AND c.AssessmentCompleted + 21 <= :EndDate

• How to secure licensekey generation

  Scenario, simplified for brevity: A developer creates an application for a customer. The customer sells this app to end-users. The app requires a license key to run, and this key is generated by the customer for each end-user with a simple tool created by the developer. The license key contains an expiry date for the license and is encrypted so the end-user can’t tamper with it. The problem here is that the developer (or anybody who has a copy of the license key generator) can easily create valid license keys. Should this generator fall into the wrong hands, it could spell disaster for the customers business. Ideally, the customer would have to use a password to create new license keys. And this password would be unknown to the developer, and somehow baked into the decryption algorithm in the application so it will fail if an attempt to use an unauthorized key is made. How would you implement a solution for this problem that is both transparent and secure?

• Light-weight client/server DB?

  Hello, (This question falls between programming and finding a tool, so I guess I'll ask here in SO since it has more activity than SuperUser.) I like the simplicity of SQLite, but by design, it doesn't support concurrent access. The apps I write don't have heavy needs, so I'd like to avoid heavier solutions like MySQL that are more difficult to deploy (remote customers with usually no computer personnel). Does someone know of a good solution that would offer the following features? Client available for VB.Net applications The server itself doesn't have to be a .Net application. Actually, I'd rather a bare-metal server so that it can run even on embedded Linux hosts with less RAM/CPU than regular PC's Easy install: the client part should either be statically linked inside the client application or be available as a single DLL, and the server should just be a single EXE listening for queries, à la Fossil (http://www.fossil-scm.org) clients can locate the server on the LAN by broadcasting data picked up by the server, so users don't have to write down the IP address and paste it into each client open-source, or moderately priced closed-source Thank you.

• Moving a C# Program to a different language

  I am currently in charge of the development of the second version of program that was created in Microsoft .NET C#. I'm not doing any actual programming, but I am writing the specification for the programmer. I'd like to take it off the .NET codebase, but since Joel said on his blog never to rewrite code, and he does provide good reasoning, I'm inclined to think carefully. So my question is, (1) Are there any easy ways to transition? (Languages like .NET C#) (2) Would you take it off .NET? (3) If so, what language would you use? The reason I want to take it off of .NET is as far as my understanding of .NET, it has to be installed on the client. I'd prefer not to inconvenience my customers when there's a better way.

• NHibernate: Many-to-many relationship with field in the relationship table

  I'm scratching my head; I have a Car table and a Customer table that have a many-to-many relationship. In this relationship table I want to add a column that can tell me what kind of relationship this is; is the customer testdriving the car, do he want to buy the car, ect. What I want to end up with is a class Car object that holds a collection of Customers and the relationship information. I might be looking at this the wrong way so feel free to push me in the right direction.

• 'Generic' ViewModel

  Using EF 4, I have several subtypes of a 'Business' entity (customers, suppliers, haulage companies etc). They DO need to be subtypes. I am building a general viewmodel which calls into a service from which a generic repository is accessed. As I have 4 subtypes, it would be good to have a 'generic' viewmodel used for all of these. Problem is of course is that I have to call a specific type into my generic repository, for example: BusinessToRetrieve = _repository .LoadEntity<Customer>(o => o.CustomerID == customerID); It would be good to be able to call <SomethingElse>, somethingElse being one or other of the subtypes), otherwise I shall have to create 4 near identical viemodels, which seems a waste of course! The subtype entity name is available to the viewmodel but I've been unable to figure out how to make the above call convert this into a type. An issue with achieving what I want is that presumably the lambda expression being passed in wouldn't be able to resolve on a 'generic' call ?

• MS Office SharePoint Server 2007 UI language change

  There is an existing app in MOSS, which allows to create polls for a call center, operators fill them out as they call targeted customers. Then this Web app outputs the results of this poll. Is it possible to change the interface language of this existing web app? Operators don't understand English. If it's not about language packs, it would still be easier for me to embed new names and labels, rather than rewrite in a system I am not familiar with. Also, is it possible to change the authentication type from Windows authentication to regular username/password check (username and password will be stored in DB or somewhere only for this site) If it is possible, can you direct me to some kind of tutorial, help or manual which would show how to do it? On MSDN it's written that language can't be changed, but I'm not sure whether it's about the Web app language. Thank you.

• Core Data store corruption

  A handful of customers for my iPhone app are experiencing Core Data store corruption (I assume so, since the error is "Failed to save to data store: Operation could not be completed. (Cocoa error 259.)") Has anyone else experienced this kind of store corruption? I am worried since I aim to soon push an update which performs a schema migration, and I am worried that this will expose even more problems. I had assumed that the Core Data/SQLlite APIs use atomic operations and are immune to corruption except if the underlying filesystem experiences corruption. Is there a way to reduce/prevent corruption, or at least a good way to reproduce (I have been unsuccessful thus far).

• Symfony app - how to add calculated fields to Propel objects?

  What is the best way of working with calculated fields of Propel objects? Say I have an object "Customer" that has a corresponding table "customers" and each column corresponds to an attribute of my object. What I would like to do is: add a calculated attribute "Number of completed orders" to my object when using it on View A but not on Views B and C. The calculated attribute is a COUNT() of "Order" objects linked to my "Customer" object via ID. What I can do now is to first select all Customer objects, then iteratively count Orders for all of them, but I'd think doing it in a single query would improve performance. But I cannot properly "hydrate" my Propel object since it does not contain the definition of the calculated field(s). How would you approach it?

  I am looking for a magnetic card reader with data storage of about 2 GB. This reader be placed in open under a shade, but would be exposed to temperatures from -5 C to 50 C. Job is to swipe customer loyalty cards issued to regular customers of a gas station. Each time they get gas filled, they will swipe their card, to mark their presence. Swiped data be stored in the reader. And on intervals be transferred to a PC lying in the office. The customer visits data be used to award some gifts or benefits to frequently visiting clients. • Automated fake mailbox

  Hello, i'm about to start the development of a new automated-email application. The idea is that customers (or other external users) send emails to a mailbox and then an automated process will read them, extract their information and insert it into some database. It's a requirement that the emails have an standard format in order to be parsed (standard subject, etc.). The obvious thing to do would be to set up a process that periodically pools an ordinary mailbox, through pop-3 for example, processing the messages it finds. However, it would be for me much nicer to be able to process the emails as they arrive. I was wondering then, is there any way to set up a process that acts as a fake email-box? do you know about any open-source implementation of something like that I can extend?   Hi, I have a module which uses Hibernate as an ORM solution with EHCache as second level cache. I have another seperate module which inserts and updates the database. What I need is to have the ability to trigger an event when a row is inserted or updated. Let's say I have a Customers table and it is mapped to a Customer entity. I want some procedure to notify me that a new Customer has been added. Regarding the second seperate module it uses Hibernate also but at least for the time being they are not connected (I'm pointing this out as if someone thinks that I must share the Hibernate session (or something of the sort) between them then this is something I will consider). Please note that I have limited experience with Hibernate. Thanks in advance

• Is Rails default CSRF protection insecure

  By default the form post CSRF protection in Rails creates an authenticity token for a user that only changes when the user's session changes. One of our customers did a security audit of our site and flagged that as an issue. The auditor's statement was that if we also had a XSS vulnerability that an attacker could grab another user's authenticity token and make use of it for CSRF attacks until the user's session expired. But is seems to me that if we had an XSS vulnerability like that an attacker could just as easily grab another user's session cookie and login as that user directly. Or even just make call to our REST Api as the user being attacked. No secondary CSRF attack needed. Have I missed something? Is there a real problem with the default CSRF protection in Rails?

• SQL Server Table locks in long query - Solution: NoLock?

  a report in my application runs a query that needs between 5 - 15 seconds (constrained to count of rows that will be returned). The query has 8 joins to nearly all main-tables of my application (Customers, sales, units etc). A little tool shows me, that in this time, all those 8 tables are locked with a shared table lock. That means, no update operation will be done in this time. A solution from a friend is, to have every join in the query, which is not mandetory to have 100% correct data (dirty read), with a NoLock, so only 1 of this 8 tables will be locked completly. Is that a good solution? For a report in which 99% of data came from one table, unlock the less prio tables?

• Get foreign key in external content type to show up in list view

For example. I have a database that has orders and customers. An order has one and only one customer and a customer can have many orders. How can I setup external content types in such a way that when in the list view of these external content types, I can jump between and possible lookup values to that other type?

• Is it possible for competing file access to cause deadlock in Java?

  I'm chasing a production bug that's intermittent enough to be a real bastich to diagnose properly but frequent enough to be a legitimate nuisance for our customers. While I'm waiting for it to happen again on a machine set to spam the logfile with trace output, I'm trying to come up with a theory on what it could be. Is there any way for competing file read/writes to create what amounts to a deadlock condition? For instance, let's say I have Thread A that occasionally writes to config.xml, and Thread B that occasionally reads from it. Is there a set of circumstances that would cause Thread B to prevent Thread A from proceeding? My thanks in advance to anybody who helps with this theoretical fishing expedition. Edit: To answer Pyrolistical's questions: the code isn't using Filelock, and is running on a WinXP machine.

• Displaying console output?

  I am currently creating a customer application for a local company. I have a datagridview linked to the customers table, and I am trying to link it up so that updates, inserts and deletions are handled correctly. I am very new to c# so I am starting with the basics (like about 2 days ago I knew nothing - I know vb.net, Java and several other languages though..). Anywho from what I understand anything output through Debug.WriteLine should only appear when in debug mode (common sense really) but anything output through Concole.WriteLine should appear whether or not in debug mode. However I have checked the immediate and output windows and nothing is being output when in normal mode. Does anyone have any idea why this is?? Edit: I have event handlers for clicking a cell - it should output CellClicked and set the gridview to invisible when a cell is clicked. The latter works whichever mode I am in, but CellClicked is only output in debug mode. I am using Console.WriteLine("CellClicked").
