• asp.net web app - writing data to access or error logs?

  I'm looking for a quick way to log some data - I seem to remember a way to write to the access log, similar to System.Out.Println() but I can't seem to remember how to do it. I can't attach a debugger, nor can I add additional information to the web app via Response.Write(). Is there a simple way - a single statement with no configuration changes would be ideal - to write to either the error or access logs?

  How can I create global variables that are shared in C? If I put it in a header file, then the linker complains that the variables are already defined. Is the only way to declare the variable in one of my C files and to manually put in externs at the top of all the other C files that want to use it? That sounds not ideal.

• Cross-browser method for hiding page elements until all content is loaded to prevent layout from appearing broken during load?

  I have an issue where due to some elements loading faster than others, the page looks broken for a few seconds at the start. An example is the CSS Pie behavior that allows me to do curved corners in IE, it appears before it becomes curved which looks bad. What would be ideal would be it somehow knowing when everything is loaded and then appear all at once, possibly including some kind of elegant visual way of not making the user feel impatient... any ideas or common tricks for doing this?

However sometimes it does not release the lock right away and that causes file locking exceptions with functions run after this one run. However the hair pulling was so much that you'd never add it to your resume (even though it might sound impressive) for fear that a future employer might think your the ideal candidate to "migrate", "integrate" or otherwise work with "Application X". Feel free to elaborate on why... (e.g. their APIs change monthly, there is/was no API, etc.) (made into a community wiki)
