• date_create_from_format equivalent for PHP 5.2 (or lower)

  Hi all, I'm working with PHP 5.3 on my local machine and needed to parse a UK date format (dd/mm/yyyy). I found that strtotime didn't work with that date format, so I used date_create_from_format instead - which works great. Now, my problem is that my staging server is running PHP 5.2, and date_create_from_format doesn't work on that version. (It's a shared server, and wouldn't have a clue how to upgrade it to PHP 5.3) So is there a similar function to date_create_from_format that I can use? Bespoke or PHP native? Many thanks, - Lee

• Drawing a path with a line in OpenLayers using JavaScript

  I have seen the examples presented here of how to draw a line but the examples only show how to do it with the mouse, by clicking. What I want to do is draw the line manually using JavaScript given a list of Longitude and Latitude coordinates. The reason I cannot work on the source provided in the link above is because they are only calling activate on the feature, and then let the user point and click on the map. Has anyone ever drew a path on an OpenLayers map programatically? What I want to do is exactly this: http://openspace.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/openspace/example4.html, but without using OpenSpace.

Boredom is a very important issue a software tester has to deal with. With regard to this I have the following questions: How can one overcome this in their day to day activities of their job as a software tester?   Hi, I have table with an auto-increment field, but I need to transfer the table to another table on another database. Will the value of field 1 be 1, that of field 2 be 2, etc? Also in case the database get corrupted and I need to restore the data, will the auto-increment effect in some way? will the value change? (eg if the first row, id (auto-inc) = 1, name = john, country = UK .... will the id field remain 1?) I am asking because if other table refer to this value, all data will get out of sync if this field change.

  Hallo all. I got a strange problem with this piece of code Seleziona text 1 test 2 The correct behaviour is that with this html the selected option is the "Seleziona" On some browser when i render this html the first option is blank and if I select the value jQuery("#nazioni").val() I got null value. Where is the problem? With the select option in this state I cannot set any values via jquery or via any other plugin. jQuery("#nazioni option:first").attr("selected", "selected"); does not work. I tried to use the textotela plugin (http://www.texotela.co.uk/code/jquery/select/) but if i remove the first option in this way jQuery("#nazioni).removeOption(0) it removes the "Seleziona" value.   Hello, A part of a process requires to apply String Similarity Algorithms. The results of this process will be stored and produce lets say SS_Dataset. Based on this Dataset, further decisions will have to be made. My questions are: Should i apply one or more string similarity algorithms to produce SS_Dataset ? Any comparisons between algorithms that calculate the 'distance' and the 'Sounds Like' similarity ? Does one family of algorithms produces more accurate results over the other? Does a combination give more accurate results on similarity? Can you recommend implementations that you have worked with? • JQUERY CYCLE - Can I add page links to anchors assigned to Cycle's pager?

  Hello everyone. Seems I've outdone myself. All the while I was creating this pretty little 'latest news' widget that fades on mouseover of each anchor. Then my colleague says, "Hey, Chris, these links don't work" ...oops. I would like to find out if I can have these anchors take the user to the relvent page on click. Currently Cycle is set to do its hocus pocus on mouseover. • Can any Palm Pre be used for development?

  We're about to start developing software for the Palm, using WebOS. Though an emulator is available for testing, I always feel more confident seeing it run on a physical device as well. I can't find anywhere on Palm's website that tells me whether I can just buy an off-the-shelf Palm Pre and run my app on it, or if I have to buy one with a particular type of contract/ have it unlocked in some way/ whatever. Does anyone know? Have you done this? (Sorry this is barely programming-related, but I couldn't think where else to ask. I'm sure someone has done this and can give me a quick yay or nay. Thanks.) Oh - I'm in the UK, if that makes any difference.

• Are there any worse sorting algorithms than Bogosort (a.k.a Monkey Sort)?

  My co-workers took me back in time to my University days with a discussion of sorting algorithms this morning. We reminisced about our favorites like StupidSort, and one of us was sure we had seen a sort algorithm that was O(n!). That got me started looking around for the "worst" sorting algorithms I could find. We postulated that a completely random sort would be pretty bad (i.e. randomize the elements - is it in order? no? randomize again), and I looked around and found out that it's apparently called BogoSort, or Monkey Sort, or sometimes just Random Sort. Monkey Sort appears to have a worst case performance of O(∞), a best case performance of O(n), and an average performance of O(n * n!). Are there any named algorithms that have worse average performance than O(n * n!)? Or are just sillier than Monkey Sort in general?

• How can I make mock-0.6 return a sequence of values?

  I'm using the mock-0.6 library from http://www.voidspace.org.uk/python/mock/mock.html to mock out a framework for testing, and I want to have a mock method return a series of values, each time it's called. Right now, this is what I figured should work: def returnList(items): def sideEffect(*args, **kwargs): for item in items: yield item yield mock.DEFAULT return sideEffect mock = Mock(side_effect=returnList(aListOfValues)) values = mock() log.info("Got %s", values) And the log output is this: subsys: INFO: Got <generator object func at 0x1021db500> So, the side effect is returning the generator, not the next value, which seems wrong. Where am I getting this wrong?

  Hello, I'm looking for Javascript code for letting the user draw a line (on an image). Just as the line tool in Photoshop (for example): The user clicks on the image, drags the mouse (while the line between the start point and the mouse point is dynamically drawn on mouse drag). I would also need a callable function to send the page the start and end coordinates. • Convert latitude and longitude into northings and eastings

  Hi I have the following UK postcode dy8 3xt and know that the latitude and longitude is:- 54.452772 -2.156082 I also know that the Eastings, Northings for the postcode is:- 389490 283880 However I am struggling to find the equation that converts lat/long to northings and Eastings, I would prefer to have the equation in both in jScript and c# (I am being greedy)!   My co-worker and I have come across this warning message a couple times recently. For the below code: package com.mycompany.product.data; import com.mycompany.product.dao.GenericDAO; public abstract class EntityBean { public abstract GenericDAO<Object, Long> getDAO(); // ^^^^^^ <-- WARNING OCCURS HERE } the warning appears in the listed spot as EntityBean.getDAO() has non-API return type GenericDAO<T, ID> A Google search for "has non-API return type" only shows instances where this message appears in problem lists. I.e., there's no public explanation for it. What does this mean? We can create a usage problem filter in Eclipse to make the message go away, but we don't want to do this if our usage is a legitimate problem. Thanks!

• Seeking Functional Programming Lexicon

  Hi, Knowing the argot of a field helps me a lot, especially since it allows me to converse intelligently with those who know a lot more than I, so I would like to find a good lexicon of Functional Programming terms. E.g., I repeatedly encounter these: Functor, Arrow, Category, Kleisli, Monad, Monoid, a veritable zoo of Morphisms, etc. I also notice many of these appear with prefixes such as "covariant", "co-", "endo-" etc. Of these, I can say I actually understand Monoid and Covariant and sort of get Monad, but the rest are still gibberish to me. (Note that I don't mean this list as exhaustive and I'm not looking to have these defined or described for me here, I'm looking for learning resources.) Can someone point me towards an FP lexicon? It need not be on-line, as long as it's possible to find it (and it's not a rare volume for which I'd have to pay many tens of dollars).

• Determining the hostname/IP address from the MX record in PHP

  Hi there, have a basic email domain validation script that takes a user's email domain, resolves the IP address from that and then checks that against various published blacklists. Here is how I am determining the IP: $domain = substr(strchr($email, '@'), 1); $ip = gethostbyname($domain); The problem is that some email address domains, such as [email protected], use an MX record rather than an A record, so using gethostbyname('alumni.example.net') will fail to resolve. I know when a user's email is using an MX in the email itself by using the PHP checkdnsrr function, but once at that stage am a little stuck as to how to proceed. In theory, I could parse out the 'root' domain, i.e. 'example.net' and check it, but I've not found reliable regex that can handle this task when the user could easily have an email the format of [email protected].co.uk... So, any suggestions on how to best tackle this??

• Combine DVCS with Visual Source Safe

  I'm forced to use Visual Source Safe 2005 at work. I'd like to combine that with a DVCS, so that I can check in files locally without disrupting my co-workers if there's a bug or it doesn't compile. In my attempts with Mercurial, it works, but causes a few weird issues. Namely, it thinks someone else has checked out the files I have checked out. Here's my thoughts on how I should manage it: Disable auto-checkout. Work locally in Mercurial When I'm ready to push my changes... Clone my Mercurial repository. Update my Visual Source Safe repository Pull and merge the two repositories using Mercurial. Check everything into Visual Source Safe. Does this sound reasonable? I'm always hearing bad things about VSS, is this just asking for me to see those problems firsthand?

• Efficient Map Overlays in on Android Google Map...

  Hi Friends, I want to do the following and am kind of stuck on these for a few days.... 1) I have used helloItemizedOverlay to add about 150 markers and it gets very very slow.....any idea what to do ? I was thinking about threads....(handler) ... 2) I was trying to draw poly lines ( I have encoded polylines, but have managed to decoded those) that move when I move the map.....(the only solution that I found was for Geopoints to be transformed into screen co-ordinates...which wont move if I move the map !) 3) I was looking for some sort of a timer function that executes a given function, say, every 1 minute or so.... 4) I was also looking for ways to clear the Google map from all the markers/lines etc.... • Should developers know how to use office suites?

  How deep is your knowledge on Office suites? Personally i don't like them, i hate create and manage word documents, excel datasheets etc. etc. I'm not talking about opening a word document and write some text or calculate sum and division on excel; i'm talking about advanced features like revisions, vba macros and so on. I have a co-worker, actually he's a talented functional analyst, that don't know anything about programming but he's kind a monster guru on Microsoft Office suite. When he sits on my desk and asks me to open and modify some of his hardly complicated Microsoft Excel multicolor multipivotal recursive datasheet, ehm, i feel like a baby in front of a nuclear plant console.It' not a great feeling if you know what i mean. As programmer, do you feel guilty about not knowing office suites enough?

In Table "Indian Customer" i want to put a constraint so that the users entring data in this table should not be able to enter customers that dont exist in "Customer Master" or whose branch location is not IN. also the tables are in the same project but are not directly related.

This is different from What is the worst code you've ever written?, because that, as I understand it, revolves around code later called worst because of ignorance. hack: code written, knowing it is horrible code, for the sake of convenience, deadlines, working around another broken system or bug, etc., but not ignorance. If you want, you can describe your co-workers' reaction, how bad your hospital bill was after showing them the code, if you felt disappointed in yourself for coming up with it or proud of yourself for coming up with a creative and clever solution. This doesn't have to be shipped code, this could also be code written for personal purposes.
