• Developing a GPS car tracking system

  I'm in the brainstorming phase to develop a GPS car tracking system requested by a customer. I myself know the directions to build some GPS system to mobile phones and etc. But sincerely I don't know how to start in that project. That is the scenario: 1) The cars will get a device with a SIM CARD that will emit GPS signals. 2) My customer will in any place (home, work, etc) with a web connection will see in the map where the car is located. For me, I have not problems at get the GPS data, convert to usable info and show the position in some map system (like Google Maps or MS Bing Maps, by example). My problem is, how I do to retrieve that "GPS Signal" from device in the car? I will need some kind of "Receiver Device" connected to a web server machine in order to my application to consume that data? Or "automagically" my sodtware will receive the info from a third-party web-service? Or what?

• Can someone describe through code a practical example of backtracking with iteration instead of recursion?

  Recursion makes backtracking easy as it guarantees that you won't go through the same path again. So all ramifications of your path are visited just once. I am trying to convert a backtracking tail-recursive (with accumulators) algorithm to iteration. I heard it is supposed to be easy to convert a perfectly tail-recursive algorithm to iteration. But I am stuck in the backtracking part. Can anyone provide a example through code so myself and others can visualize how backtracking is done? I would think that a STACK is not needed here because I have a perfectly tail-recursive algorithm using accumulators, but I can be wrong here.

• Starting work on a Pre-existing Project

  So this is more of a generic question. I seem to keep finding myself being put on larger and larger projects. Recently I have been assigned to a very large project written in C and VHDL. The goal is for me to become familiar with the code and eventually take the lead on the project. This is by far the largest project I have been assigned to work on that I didn't start. So here is my question: What methods/tools do you use to learn how everything works? Do you just increase and expand on comments? Do you make a UML representation of the project? • Placing figure in top-right corner of another

  I want child figure (org.eclipse.draw2d.Figure) to be relative to the top-right corner of the parent (I want place some small icon, which will be ImageFigure, to be 12 pixels from top and right borders). Is there an existing layout manager that can layout child this way? The org.eclipse.draw2d.XYLayout is not capable of measuring position relative to corner other than top-left. Of course, I can: Write layout manager myself Layout children figure every time bounds are changed for the parent (in parent layout() method). However, I would like to know if some existing layout manager provides that functionality.

• Python lazy property decorator

  Recently I've gone through an existing code base and refactored a lot of instance attributes to be lazy, ie. not be initialised in the constructor but only upon first read. These attributes do not change over the lifetime of the instance, but they're a real bottleneck to calculate that first time and only really accessed for special cases. I find myself typing the following snippet of code over and over again for various attributes across various classes: class testA(object): def __init__(self): self._a = None self._b = None @property def a(self): if self._a is None: # Calculate the attribute now self._a = 7 return self._a @property def b(self): #etc Is there an existing decorator to do this already in Python that I'm simply unaware of? Or, is there a reasonably simple way to define a decorator that does this? I'm working under Python 2.5, but 2.6 answers might still be interesting if they are significantly different.

But I would like to get more details of the error on the page: Error.aspx somehow; but not creating each page for each kind of error. Is there a way to include certain code on my error page (Error.aspx) to get the detail of what raised that error?. Hope myself clear. Thanks PD. I'm using C#.

  I am building an ASP.NET server control which extends CompositeControl. I need fine grained control over the rendering, so I override Render() and output the child controls myself, interspersed with HTML generation code: writer.AddStyleAttribute("float", "left"); writer.RenderBeginTag(System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriterTag.Div); writer.RenderBeginTag(System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriterTag.Strong); writer.Write("Table"); writer.RenderEndTag(); // strong writer.WriteBreak(); tableList.RenderControl(writer); writer.RenderEndTag(); // div This works really well for user controls that just contain simple controls without children of their own. However, if I want to use something like a MultiView or an UpdatePanel I run into problems, since I can't override Render() on View or UpdatePanel without extending them, and if I do extend them the implementation would presumably have to depend on FindControl() voodoo to get references to the right controls during render. That doesn't sound like the right way to do this - is there a better way?

• Implementing a linear, binary SVM (support vector machine)

  I want to implement a simple SVM classifier, in the case of high-dimensional binary data (text), for which I think a simple linear SVM is best. The reason for implementing it myself is basically that I want to learn how it works, so using a library is not what I want. The problem is that most tutorials go up to an equation that can be solved as a "quadratic problem", but they never show an actual algorithm! So could you point me either to a very simple implementation I could study, or (better) to a tutorial that goes all the way to the implementation details? Thanks a lot!

• How do I create many-one relationships using Scaffold?

  I'm new to Ruby on Rails, and I'm trying to create a bass guitar tutor in order to teach myself RoR (and bass guitar). The walkthroughs use Scaffold to create ActiveRecord classes, but they seem to correspond to standalone tables; there's no use of belongs_to or has_many. I'd like to create three classes: Scale, GuitarString, and Fret. Each Scale has many GuitarStrings, which each have many Frets. How do I create classes with this relationship using Scaffold? Is there a way to do it in one go, or do I need to create them in an unrelated state using Scaffold, then add the relations by hand? Or should I ditch Scaffold entirely?

• Is it worthwhile learning about Emacs? [closed]

  Hi there Some time ago, I've heard what a great tool Emacs can be. I've read some papers about it and some watched some video too. I've read that emacs is great not only for developers but for usual users too...so i decided to start learning how to use it and wok with it. The problem is that I'm a MS Windows user and I learn in my spare time PHP and C(I also did some products on those languages, but i still considering myself in learning stage). Another problem is that I learn alone (no friends around to ask/learn from them, programming related stuff). Can you give me some tips about how to use those type of tools(especially those written for gnu/unix) with "poor" GUI but rich features? Do you recommend to use the specific windows written applications only and forget about those which come from GNU?

• [AS2] Button Problem

  problem hello, I have Button (with no name), which has a MovieClip child. this movie_clip called ax_kr has XX frames, each containing one image. Now, upon loading flash or frame containg this button (actually, 43 of them), I would like to tell to each button, that in your ax_kr MovieClip, load frame YY - first one would load frame 2, second frame 3, third frame 4 etc. etc. Or is there anyway to use one generic MovieClip/Button with that ax_kr MovieClip as child with frame xy as active and two more actions? (on RollOver, another MC on stage goes to frame xy (same as ax_kr has) and on Click, another MC on stage goes to frame xy (still the same number)) I did previously in as3 and find it quite okay, but now I have to enhance old as2 application and I feel like I should just kill myself.

• Is there a COM object that just implements IUnknown I can use?

  For an asynchronous Windows API, I can provide an IUnknown state parameter to associate calls to the API with calls from the callback. It's my understanding that COM guarantees that two IUnknown pointers to the same object will be of the same value. Thus, if I only want to associate API calls with callbacks, IUnknown should be all I need, by comparing the values of the pointers. Is there a stock implementation of IUnknown I can use? Of course it would be trivial to implement myself, but for such a base component of COM, I'm wondering if Windows or ATL provides one I should use instead. Thanks, --Matt

• Whats up with cross site Scripting (getJSON) and flickr example

  In past i had read the documentation about getJSON and there is an example with a flickr photo api. (the example with the [pussy]cats :-)). No I ask myself why is it possible, to access flickr directly with this example. Ive tried this by store this code on my local machine - it works but if I use a local copy of jquery i just get an error in firebug like this $ is not defined myurl/test.html Line 11 Does anybody of you have a solution for this paradox thing? This is the documentation url HTTP:api.jquery.com/jQuery.getJSON/ The example isn´t also not working if I store the HTTP:code.jquery.com/jquery-latest.js in my local jquery file. • Open source iPhone components? Reusable views, controllers, buttons, table cells, etc?

  Are there any repositories around for open sourced iPhone components? For instance, I have found myself needing to create several new types of table cells to mimic some of Apple's existing functionality (for instance, all the different types of table cells present in the Settings application). I can't imagine I'm alone here. Where do you go to find open sourced reusable components, or do you just write and hoard your own? Update: I know there are open source full projects around (see this question), but rummaging through them and picking and choosing still leads to significant duplication of effort. • per build configuration files on iPhone ?

  I'm looking for the best way to store per-Build configuration information for an iPhone app. In my iPhone app there are several url's and storage location settings that are specific to a particular build (DEBUG RELEASE etc) Currently i have three recipients for my app, QA/Test, myself and the customer, each has specific settings for the url's and storage locations mentioned above. whats the best way to do this? NOTE: they don't necessarily have to be defined in the build but what im looking for is advice on the best way to store alternate configuration settings. ALSO NOTE: i do not want these settings to be editable through the settings app thanks

• A tool or framework extension or code snippet for logging the internal state of objects?

  When spiking on how something works or when my unit test behave in an unpredictable manner I usually have to drop into debug mode. 99% of my time in debug mode is spent checking the values of fields on objects to verify its state. I already have log4net set up, it would seem that if I could easily add a line of code to log out the state of objects I could remove most of my need to start up the bulky debugger. The problem is of course that to expose object state implicitly you need to manually override each object's ToString() method. What I would like to be able to do is the ability to do logger.LogState(someObject) and have logged out the object state including at least a formatted list of all the private variables, references (to some arbitrary depth), and collections. Does anyone know a tool/framework/code snippet that can be used to generate a string of the internal state of any object? I could of course write one myself but its a non-trivial problem and I'd prefer something someone has put some thought into.

  Hello, I'm looking for possible solutions to the following need: I have a VPN configured (using openVPN over Linux, BTW), and I want to know at any moment which hosts are connected to it. I recognize that it probably is the same thing as trying to know which hosts are connected to a lan, so any of the solutions might do the job... The fact is that I once used a hamachi vpn on linux and with it I had the chance to know which hosts were connected to a particular network where I belonged, so I was wondering if something similar might be possible in openVPN (or even any VPN and/or any LAN). Preferably, I'm looking for opensource/free sw solutions, or maybe the hints to program it myself (in the most simple way if possible, not that I don't know how to program, but I'm trying to achieve this in a simple manner).   I am trying to write a "Hello World" web application using Tomcat and Eclipse, in order to familiarize myself with building Tomcat projects. So far I've gleaned from Google searches that I need to install Eclipse Web Tools Platform (WTP) to go ahead with it. But when I go to Help-Install New Software I can't find any software update site that is hosting WTP. My default "Available Software Sites" are Helios, Mylyn for Eclipse Helios, and the Eclipse Project Updates. Do I need to add a new software update site to install WTP? If so, what is the URL? • Avoiding accidentally catching KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit in Python 2.4

  In Python scripts, there are many cases where a keyboard interrupt (Ctrl-C) fails to kill the process because of a bare except clause somewhere in the code: try: foo() except: bar() The standard solution in Python 2.5 or higher is to catch Exception rather than using bare except clauses: try: foo() except Exception: bar() This works because, as of Python 2.5, KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit inherit from BaseException, not Exception. However, some installations are still running Python 2.4. How can this problem be handled in versions prior to Python 2.5? (I'm going to answer this question myself, but putting it here so people searching for it can find a solution.)

• Can I make clojure macro that will allow me to get a list of all functions created by the macro?

  I would like to have a macro which I'll call def-foo. Def-foo will create a function, and then will add this function to a set. So I could call (def-foo bar ...) (def-foo baz ...) And then there would be some set, e.g. all-foos, which I could call: all-foos => #{bar, baz} Essentially, I'm just trying to avoid repeating myself. I could of course define the functions in the normal way, (defn bar ...) and then write the set manually. A better alternative, and simpler than the macro idea, would be to do: (def foos #{(defn bar ...) (defn baz ...)} ) But I'm still curious as to whether there is a good way for the macro idea to work.

  Hi Im new with Objective C but a veteran of C# & VB.Net. Is there an available API or functionality in cocoa where i can communicate with my GSM Phone to listen to any incoming SMS messages and be able to send messages myself. I'm trying to build an application for OSX SnowLeopard that can do this. Under the windows platform there are available API's that i can use to do this job for me. • ASP.Net MVC and N-Tier

  Greetings, Apologies in advance that I have not researched this toughly enough to answer the question myself, but I imagine it would take me some time and I would rather know now before I invest more time in learning it. I couldn't find anything in my initial research.. Why use ASP.Net MVC if your already using a multi-tier architecture (Data Layer, Logic Layer, Presentation Layer)? Other than the fact the controller has more power than the logic layer. Am I right in thinking I can use nHibernate and all my data access classes, entities, and mappings in the Model part of the MVC? When using controllers, is it best to separate a lot of the logic into a separate class so I can call it from multiple controllers? Or can I call them from the controllers themselves, considering the fact that I would not want all of them to be Actions, just normal methods. Thanks
