• Can't find the source of an exception in Java

  Basically an exception is being thrown and I can't find the reason. When thrown nothing is painted. Another interesting thing is the timing of the throwing. I am unable to find any logical patern, as sometimes it is thrown as soon as I initiate the class and sometimes it needs more then five minutes. In addition to this, as far as I tested there is no single action that calls repaint() that triggers it or rather all do. I am new to Java and all the other exceptions had the class and row number of where they were thrown so I don't know what to do here. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I think that this exception is thrown from a library I use, but it's a .jar file and I don't know how to open it.

  I have an application developed in NetBeans/Maven that can be started via command line with: mvn exec:exec "-Dexec.executable=C:\\Java\\jdk1.6.0_33\\bin\\java.exe" "-Dexec.args=-Dlog4j.properties=... -classpath %classpath com.xxx.MyLauncher" -Dexec.classpathScope=runtime -Dexec.workingdir= Now I need to run the application through the standard java command line method, like: java -Dlog4j.properties=... -jar myapp-1.2-SNAPSHOT.jar Unfortunately this does not work in the same manner, as I get the following exception: opencard.core.util.OpenCardPropertyLoadingException: property file not found Questions: What is the difference between launching applications with the Exec-Maven-plugin and the standard java execution on command line? Is there an easy way to convert a Maven execution script to a standard command line? How to run the application succesfully?

• Unable to connect to mysql through JDBC connector through Tomcat or externally.

  I've installed a stock mysql 5.5 installation, and while I can connect to the mysql service via the mysql command, and the service seems to be running, I cannot connect to it through spring+tomcat or from an external jdbc connector. I'm using the following URL: jdbc:mysql://myserver.com:myport/mydb with proper username/password, but I receive the following message: server.com: Communications link failure The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. the driver has not received any packets from the server. and tomcat throws: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: Communications link failure The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. • Win32: IProgressDialog will not disappear until you mouse over it.

  i'm using the Win32 progress dialog. The damnest thing is that when i call: progressDialog.StopProgressDialog(); it doesn't disappear. It stays on screen until the user moves her mouse over it - then it suddenly disappers. The call to StopProgressDialog returns right away (i.e. it's not a synchronous call). i can prove this by doing things after the call has returned: private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { //Force red background to prove we've started this.BackColor = Color.Red; this.Refresh(); //Start a progress dialog IProgressDialog pd = (IProgressDialog)new ProgressDialog(); pd.StartProgressDialog(this.Handle, null, PROGDLG.Normal, IntPtr.Zero); //The long running operation System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10000); //Stop the progress dialog pd.SetLine(1, "Stopping Progress Dialog", false, IntPtr.Zero); pd.StopProgressDialog(); pd = null; //Return form to normal color to prove we've stopped. this.BackColor = SystemColors.Control; this.Refresh(); } The form: starts gray turns red to show we've stared turns back to gray color to show we've called stop So the call to StopProgressDialog has returned, except the progress dialog is still sitting there, mocking me, showing the message: Stopping Progress Dialog Doesn't Appear for 10 seconds Additionally, the progress dialog does not appear on screen until the System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10000); ten second sleep is over. Not limited to .NET WinForms The same code also fails in Delphi, which is also an object wrapper around Window's windows: procedure TForm1.Button1Click(Sender: TObject); var pd: IProgressDialog; begin Self.Color := clRed; Self.Repaint; pd := CoProgressDialog.Create; pd.StartProgressDialog(Self.Handle, nil, PROGDLG_NORMAL, nil); Sleep(10000); pd.SetLine(1, StringToOleStr('Stopping Progress Dialog'), False, nil); pd.StopProgressDialog; pd := nil; Self.Color := clBtnFace; Self.Repaint; end; PreserveSig An exception would be thrown if StopProgressDialog was failing. Most of the methods in IProgressDialog, when translated into C# (or into Delphi), use the compiler's automatic mechanism of converting failed COM HRESULTS into a native language exception. In other words the following two signatures will throw an exception if the COM call returned an error HRESULT (i.e. a value less than zero): //C# void StopProgressDialog(); //Delphi procedure StopProgressDialog; safecall; Whereas the following lets you see the HRESULT's and react yourself: //C# [PreserveSig] int StopProgressDialog(); //Delphi function StopProgressDialog: HRESULT; stdcall; HRESULT is a 32-bit value. If the high-bit is set (or the value is negative) it is an error. i am using the former syntax. So if StopProgressDialog is returning an error it will be automatically converted to a language exception. Note: Just for SaG i used the [PreserveSig] syntax, the returned HRESULT is zero; MsgWait? The symptom is similar to what Raymond Chen described once, which has to do with the incorrect use of PeekMessage followed by MsgWaitForMultipleObjects: "Sometimes my program gets stuck and reports one fewer record than it should. I have to jiggle the mouse to get the value to update. After a while longer, it falls two behind, then three..." But that would mean that the failure is in IProgressDialog, since it fails equally well on CLR .NET WinForms and native Win32 code.

• Dropbox alternative with local sync support?

  I am currently using Dropbox. Just decided to sync my huge (about 5 GB) iTunes Library (music collection) in Dropbox. For that I must subscribe to their paid account. But before I do so, I'd like evaluate the alternatives. Is there an alternative that does this? Local LAN sync (eg: sync my huge music collection across computers in local network without uploading/downloading them to internet) The following would be nice (but not required): Native android client - so music will be made available in the Android music app / SDHC card Selective sync: sync particular folders / exclude certain folders on certain computers .. eg: excluding porn folder on work computers ;-) Just like Dropbox, it MUST work on 64-bit Windows, Linux and Mac. Know of any? (I am currently evaluating Spideroak. Boy, was it so complicated to use?)

• Automatically find compiler options for fastest exe on given machine?

  Is there a method to automatically find the best compiler options (on a given machine), which result in the fastest possible executable? Naturally, I use g++ -O3, but there are additional flags that may make the code run faster, e.g. -ffast-math and others, some of which are hardware-dependent. Does anyone know some code I can put in my configure.ac file (GNU autotools), so that the flags will be added to the Makefile automatically by the ./configure command? In addition to automatically determining the best flags, I would be interested in some useful compiler flags that are good to use as a default for most optimized executables.

• Strong name validation failed on VB.NET Assembly

  I have a VB.Net 1.1 application works just fine after compiling in Visual Studio. However, I want to use ILMerge to combine all the referenced assemblies into a single executable just to make it easier to move around. After I send it through ILMerge and try to run it I get the error "Strong name validation failed for .exe" ..... But none of my stuff is strong named! I saw this post here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/403731/strong-name-validation-failed and tried running it through 'sn.exe -Vr .exe' but that gives me this error: ".exe does not represent a strongly named assembly" Has anyone else had this problem before? How do I fix it?

• Matplotlib and WSGI/mod_python not working on Apache.

  Everything works as supposed to on the Django development server. In Apache, the django app also works except when matplotlib is used. Here's the error I get: No module named multiarray. Exception Type: ImportError Exception Value: No module named multiarray Exception Location: /usr/share/pyshared/numpy/core/numerictypes.py in <module>, line 81 Python Executable: /usr/bin/python Python Version: 2.6.4 From the python shell, both statements work: import numpy.core.multiarray and import multiarray. Any ideas? Thanks As I'm looking over the numpy files, I found the multiarray module, which has an extension of 'so'. My guess, is that mod_python is not reading these files.

  I have setup mirroring on my MSSQL server it is an automatic fail over. Lets say the SQL server goes down. I have found connection strings to reconnect the site to the mirror database for MSSQL 2008 Data Source=myServerAddress;Failover Partner=myMirrorServerAddress;Initial Catalog=myDataBase;Integrated Security=True; OR Provider=SQLNCLI10;Data Source=myServerAddress;Failover Partner=myMirrorServerAddress;Initial Catalog=myDataBase;Integrated Security=True; OR Driver={SQL Server Native Client 10.0};Server=myServerAddress;Failover_Partner=myMirrorServerAddress;Database=myDataBase; Trusted_Connection=yes; Is there something similar I can use for PHP to do the same sort of thing. This way if only the database goes down the site instantly fails over to the mirror database as soon as it is online. Thoughts/Suggestions/Comments All appreciated. I checked connectionstring.com but did not find a section for PHP

• how to link with static mySQL C library with Visual Studio 2008?

  Hi, My project is running fine, but its requirement for some DLLs means it cannot be simply dragged and dropped by the end user. The DLLs are not loaded when put side by side with my executable, because my executable is not an application, and its location is not in the few locations where Windows looks for DLL. I already asked a question about how to make their loading happen. None of the suggestions worked (see the question at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2637499/how-can-a-win32-app-plugin-load-its-dll-in-its-own-directory) So I am now exploring another way: get rid of the DLLs altogether, and link with static versions of them. This is failing for the last of those DLLs. So I am at this point where all but one of the libraries are statically linked, and everything is fine. The last library is the standard C library for mySQL, aka Connector/C. The problem I have may or may not be related with that origin. Whenever I switched to the static library in the linker additional dependency, I get the following errors (log at the end): 1- about 40 duplicate symbols (e.g. _toupper) mutually between LIBCMT.lib and MSVCRT.lib. Interestingly, I can't control the inclusion of these two libraries: they are from Visual Studio and automatically included. So why are these symbol duplicate when I include mySQL's static lib, but not its DLL? So does that mean that the static mySQL lib (but not the DLL) references a _main symbol? For the sake of it, I tried to define an empty function named _main() in my code, with no difference. • What is dmake actually doing when installing a new module?

  I just mangaged to install the perl/Tk module after much struggle. I realise I don't understand what dmake or make etc is actually doing. I am using strawberry perl installed at C:\strawberry. Fisrt I unpacked the module to another directory and ran perl makefile.pl which worked fine. Then I tried dmake which did not work. I guess that will be obvious to people who know how this works. When I placed the module as a sub-directory of C:\strawberry I could run perl makefile.pl, dmake, dmake test and dmake install. My guess is that dmake install is adding some executable files to the interpreter and to work the module must be in a subdirectory. Is there any article anywhere that explains what it is doing in detail?

• GCC (ld) option to strip unreferenced data/functions

  I've written an program which uses a library which has numerous functuions, but I only limited functions from it. GCC is the compiler I use. Once I've created a binary, when I used nm to see the symbols in it, it shows all the unwanted (unreferenced) functions which are never used. How do I removed those unreferenced functions and data from the executable? Is the -s option right? I'm tols that it strips all symbol table and relocation data from the binary, but does this remove the function and data too? I'm not sure on how to verify this too, since after using -s nm doesn't work since it's stripped all sym. table data too.

• Getting jerky backgrounds on Win7 on iMac 27'' 2560x1440

  I installed Win7 on bootcamp on my new iMac 27'' (ATI videocard) and everything was good until recently I noticed that the default win7 background (then one on the background on login) looked jerky. When I say jerky I mean the kind of jerky you get if you can't display enough colours, and instead of nice fading shades you just get stripes and jerky patterns. I am on native resolution but even if I go down to 1920x1080 I get the same. This might have happened after a firmware update but as I don't use windows very often I am not too sure it's what caused it. Oh, and when I am playing games everything looks OK (as in not jerky!). Any help appreciated!

• BroadcastReceiver not reading stored value from SharedPreferences

  In my app I have a broadcast receiver that turns on GPS upon receiving a set string of text. In the onLocationChanged method, I want to pass the GPS data and a value from my shared preferences to a thread in a string. I have the thread writing to log and can see all the GPS values in the string but the last value from my shared preferences is just showing up as 'prefPhoneNum' which I initialised the string to at the beginning of the receiver class. • OSX 10.6 integration into NIS/netgroup/automount infrastructure

  I have an existing infrastructure where accounts are maintained under NIS (yp) with no local unix accounts. Also, all the standard maps including hosts, mail aliases, netgroups, etc...are maintained in this form. Extensive use of the UNIX/Linux automounter with items scattered over the network on NFS servers. There are NO ACLs on any local or shared files. All mail needs to use basically the nullclient sendmail configuration feeding into a different system. I now have a requirement to integrate an Apple OSX 10.6 system into this environment and make it run seamlessly. My initial reading and second-hand information seems to indicate that this may not be possible on the native OSX 10.6 system. I'm concerned. Any ideas as to how to accomplish this task and make everybody happy? Thanks PS: I have never used an Apple OSX system.

A brief look at the JavaScript that controls it reveals that this is simply sent back to the server with &usagestats=0 or &usagestats=1. • XBMC DVB-T and Played Video filling screen

  I have a small PC running as an XBMC attached to a Samsung le37m87bd. The PC isn't powerful enough to output a full HD 1080 image at 1920x1080 which is the TVs native resolution (about every 1/2 a second things go extra fast, I assume skipping frames), so I want to reduce this. Annoyingly, the TV does not support any other widescreen resolutions. (720 etc) If I use a a 4:3 image, the TV stretches it to be the 16:9, however, all 16:9 content is stretched sideways as XBMC is sending out a 4:3 image with a 16:9 image inside. Is there anyway I can force XBMC to compensate for this, ie stretch vertically so that black bars are removed, but not stretched horizontally?

• Calling SetWindowsHookEx inside VS2008 debugger always returns NULL

  we're working on a .Net application that does a low level keyboard hook. When we call the SetWindowsHookEx running inside the debugger the call always fail. When running from the compiled executable everything works fine. If we attach to the processs the the SetWindowsHookEx has been called everything works too. I've read somewhere (I can not remember) that VS already does a low level keyboard hook but this shouldn't be a problem as there is the CallNextHook function. Someone knows what's happening? EDIT: The code is pretty straigfoward, the exception is thrown inside debugger but not outside.
