• Few problems on Dell xps 15 L502 (screen brightness ,blutooth,wi-fi power management problems)

  I am running ubuntu 11.10 32bit in my dell xps L502. Working good except few problems. Blue tooth always turned on reboot,I would like to turn it off always. Screen brightness is not saved.Every time I reboot, the screen goes back to full brightness.How to save that? and the most important problem is internet speed through wi-fi is really very slow when operating on battery.the card is intel centrino Advanced-N 1030 with integrated blue tooth. Any help will be appriciated... :)

I would like to go on to say that not only does this apply to the DBCC commands but is some respect to all parts of SQL, other Servers, IDE's, Operating Systems, just about everywhere. There is always something that just does not make it into the official documentation. And as Paul points out probably never will make it. That could be why there are so many "Tips & Tricks" types of books, blog post, etc. everywhere you look. • Windows dont boot after Ubuntu installation

  I have had serious problems installing ubuntu and Windows and have dual boot. Recently i installed booth operating systems, ubuntu was the lastima one, and after that my computador was booting directly to Windows 7. I used my ubuntu USB live to repair the grub, and o could repair. Now i initiate my pc with grub 1.99 and ubuntu and Windows are recognized, but Windows gives an error and dont initiate, sugesting to use Windows DVD to repair the grub. I tried that but with no effects on be behavior. I have a new asus n56vm. This conflits with gpt and mbr have been a huge pain to me. I dont know what to to, i installed ubuntu and Windows inumerous times since i bought this cumputer 2 weeks ago. Best regards!

• Acting as though the laptop Fn key is pressed

  I have a Fujitsu laptop and all was working fine until I ended teamviewer. On the keyboard it has a numberpad on some of the letters which you press the Fn button to use. The system is acting like I have the Fn key pressed and I get numbers shown when it should be letters. If I press the Fn key the numbers go to letters. The Fn key is not stuck down. Is there a way to reset keyboard settings or a known fix. The operating system is Ubuntu 11.04 Natty.

• Xubuntu is not seeing my Win8 OS in the installer

  When I install Xubuntu, I get the message "This computer currently has no detected operating systems. What would you like to do?". I just did a fresh install of Win8 yesterday, and I guess it used EFI because I have a 104MB partition that is of type 'efi'. Is there any way to install Xubuntu next to Win8, and avoid any boot problems? Or can I switch Win8 to BIOS from EFI, without having to re-install Windows? I went through a ton of boot problems and re-installing yesterday... I really don't want to have to do it again.

• Choose at GRUB menu whether NVidia driver should be used

  For some games, I need the nvidia-current driver, but when it's enabled, I can't get my work done as it messes up everything. So is there a way I can get two options in my GRUB menu? One wich will load my operating system with the nvidia-current drivers, and one which will use the default non-proprietary one? It seems a bit stupid to me to have 2 Ubuntu installations (one for games, one for the rest). But I can't get my daily work done with the Nvidia drivers enabled as it messes up some applications, randomly freezes the system, etc. But I still want to be able to play some games. If there's a way to just load and unload the nvidia-current driver with a script or something, that would also be welcome.

  I've been bitten for the n-th time now by a library mismatch between a build and deployment environment. The build environment had libruby.so.2.0 and the deployment environment had libruby.a. One ruby was built with RVM, the other was built with ruby-build. The reason I ran into a problem was because zookeeper was compiled in a build environment that had the shared library but the deployment environment only had the static library. In all the years I've been writing application code I have never once wished that the binaries I was using where linked against shared objects. What is the reason the dichotomy persists to this day on modern operating systems?

• Default User Id at Login different from User Name in Terminal Shell

  During the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installation, I was prompted to enter a user name and password, so that a corresponding account could be created and set up for login. I replaced the one that was provided by default (i.e. '70319', which is the Windows 7 admin id) with a user name/id of my choosing. Now, when I turn on the computer, and choose to enter the Ubuntu operating system, the login id that is displayed is 70319 - that is, the one provided by Windows 7. However, when I open up a Unix/Terminal shell, the user id that is displayed at the prompt is the one I entered during installation. Otherwise, the installation of Ubuntu was a success! Is there some way of changing the user id that is displayed at the Login screen, so that it is consistent with the one I entered during installation? If it's any help, I installed Ubuntu using wubi on an ASUS Eee PC 1011PX running Windows 7, and ASUS Express Gate Cloud.   I am puzzled on how to model this situation. Suppose you have an algorithm operating in a loop. At every loop, a procedure P must take place, whose role is to modify an input data I into an output data O, such that O = P(I). In reality, there are different flavors of P, say P1, P2, P3 and so on. The choice of which P to run is user dependent, but all P have the same finality, produce O from I. This called well for a base class PBase with a method PBase::apply, with specific reimplementations of P1::apply(I), P2::apply(I), and P3::apply(I). The actual P class gets instantiated in a factory method, and the loop stays simple. Now, I have a case of P4 which follows the same principle, but this time needs additional data from the loop (such as the current iteration, and the average value of O during the previous iterations). How would you redesign for this case?

It weighed 29 pounds more than any persons lap could hold.  Then the term “portable computer” meant you could remove it from the building and take it else where.  Today I am typing on this entry on a Macbook Air which weighs 2.38 pounds. This morning Amazons front page main title is: “Much More for Much Less” I was born at the right time to start with the CPM operating system on the Kaypro thru the DOS, Windows, Linux, Mac OSX and mobile phone operating systems and languages.  If you are not aware Technology is moving at a rapid pace.  The New iPad (those who are keeping score – iPad4) is replacing a 7 month old machine the New iPad (iPad 3) I have used and owned many technology devices in my life.  The main point that most of the reader who are in the USA overlook is the fact that we are in the USA.  The devices we purchase have a great digital garden to support them.  The Kaypro computer had a 7-inch screen.  It was a TV tube with two colors – Black and Green.  You could see the 80-column screen flicker with characters – have you every played Pac-Man emulated on the screen with the ABC characters. Traveling across the world you will find that not all apps on your device will function as they did back home because they are not offered outside of your country of origin. I think the main question a buyer of technology should be asking is Function.  The greatest Specs with out function limit you.  The most beautiful form with out function is the same as a crystal vase on your shelf – not a good cereal bowl in the morning. Microsoft Surface RT, Amazon Kindle Fire and Apple iPad all great devices in their respective customers hands. My advice for those looking to purchase on this year:  If the device is your only technology device you buy what you WANT and LIKE. Consider this parallel universe if its not your only device?  Ever go shopping for clothing, shoes, and accessories with your wife, girlfriend, sister or mother?  If you listen carefully you will hear the little voices coming out of there heads saying:  “This goes well with that and I can use it also with that outfit” ”Do you think this clashes with that?”  “Ohh I love how that combination looks on you”.  Portable devices such as tablets and computers can offer a whole lot more when they are combined with the digital echo system you have at home and the manufacturer offers online. Pros of each Device: Microsoft Surface RT: There is a new functionality named SmartGlass which will let you share the content off your tablet to your XBOX 360.  Microsoft office is loaded on the tablet.  You can have more than one user profile on the tablet if you share it with others.   Amazon Kindle or Kindle HD: If you are an Amazon consumer with an annual Amazon Prime service you can consume videos and read books off the Amazon site.  Its the cheapest device.  Its a step up from the kindle reader in many ways.   Apple Ipad or Ipad mini: Over 270 Thousand applications.  Airplay permits you the ability to share to your TV screen. If you are a cord cutter (a person who gets their entertainment content over the web or air vs Cable Providers) the Airplay or Smart glass are a huge bonus.  iPad mini or not: The mini will fit in a purse where the larger one will not.  Its lighter which makes it nice to hold for prolonged periods.  It has an option for LTE wireless which non of the other sub 9 inch tables offer.  The screen is non retina which means the applications are smaller.  Speaking with individuals who are above 50 in age that wear glasses they retina does not make a difference for them however they prefer the larger iPad over the new mini.   Happy Shopping this Channuka Season.   The Kosher Coder.   Follow me on twitter @KosherCoder

• Ubuntu Server 13.04.3 doesn't boot w/ EFI

  I'm was actually trying to install Debian Wheezy (which failed horribly), then tried Ubuntu Server 13.04 and got the exact same problems as w/ Debian: After installing, the system doesn't show any boot-selection and tells me "Missing operating system". My setup is pretty simple: /dev/sdc - 1TB HDD (+ 3 other NTFS HDD) /dev/sdc1 - EFI, 100MiB, bootable /dev/sdc4 - ext4, 65GiB, Ubuntu/Debian (sdc2 & 3 are NTFS w/ data. Sorta lacking SATA-ports, therefore no OS-only HDD/SSD) Grub seems to be installed on /dev/sdc4, /dev/sdc1 only contains a "EFI"-folder. Not sure if thats correct. I used UNetbootin on OS X to make an 8GB USB-drive bootable and used the standard amd64-iso, running a perl-script wich eradicates a couple of naming-errors (different story). Using this tutorial and actually disabling UEFI and using legacy only dind't work either, the usb drive dind't even bother to boot. I'm pretty clueless here. I'd just like to install and use either Debian oder Ubuntu Server!

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04/ 32-bit using Wubi on my laptop running dual with windows 7 desktop and it works very very well. I am now also trying to install Ubuntu on another laptop already running a linux operating system only but not successful in doing so. Would like to install Windows 7 dual with Ubuntu. At the moment it is complaining about partitions of the existing linux when trying to install Windows 7 which I suppose is fair. Please herewith assist in installing the Ubuntu and Windows 7 platforms. Very much appreciated.

• Why does starting a program log me out?

  I'm not a computer nerd but have been able to fix Ubuntu/Linux problems in the pass two years with a Google search but this on has me stumped. I upgraded to 12.04 about thirty days ago and all was well except that every time I tried to load KeePassX it would go to the login screen. I installed KeePass2 and all seemed to work. Last week I tried to load Bibble5 (Raw photo editor) and it would try to load and then back to the login screen. After a few days I gave up and downloaded Corel After Shot Pro (Corel's now owns Bibble5) and it has the same problem. Could someone please head me into the steps I need to follow to find out what is the cause? I'm interested in learning more about the Linux system. How to correct any future problems like this? • Why ISO master (editor) does not read Windows images

  I have the followjng problem with ISO master software: I try to edit WIndows 7 ISO image $ isomaster windows7.iso The file does open, unfortunately all I get is README with message: This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification. isomaster comes form Ubuntu repository, I am using 12.04. The system has kernel support for UDF installed, I can mount above ISO (mount -o loop) and see its content read only. Any idea how to fix it? Using other than isomaster tool is also an option. • Changed isp, Ubuntu 13.04 won't connect to the internet

  I recently moved and changed internet service providers. my ubuntu 13.04 machine is unable to connect to the internet. I need help with the networking settings. The previous isp was Verizon dsl, current a cable company. Both connect via ethernet cable. The cable and router work on a windows machine, but not my ubuntu machine. The cable company doesn't support ubuntu or any linux operating systems. The computer seems to recognize the connection. When I unplug and plug in the cable I get a little window that says disconnected, connected. However, I can't connect to the internet in either Firefox or the Ubuntu software installer (tried this to see if it was a firefox issue, it wasn't). I tried shutting down and restarting, plugging and unplugging cables, etc.

• Help with Kodak esp 3250 printer driver on Lubuntu 12.1 SOLVED!

  First my system: pentium 4 -don't remember the speed-, 1g ram, dual boot to separate physical drives, Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 second my lan: I have four computers operating for the same printer. 1. Intel quad core i5, 4g ram, running Windoze 7 64 bit, printer connected and shared from here. Kodak ESP 3250 2. Gateway 17" laptop running Windoze 7 32bit 3. Asus tablet (small laptop) running Lumbutu 12.1 4. My dual boot system running Fdos and Lubuntu 12.1 The problem: I downloaded c2esp_25c-1_i386.deb, tried to install it using DEBI Package Installer, it loads the files, looks for cups driver and ends with an error: "Dependancy is not satisfiable: libcupsdriver1 (=1.4.0)" What do I do now? Is there some place that I can get the correct cups driver? further information: The Asus tablet was running Ubuntu 12.1 (very slowly and with a few crashes) and could print from the lan printer with no problems.
