• How can I remove old kernels/install new ones when /boot is full?

• Mexico leading in Business Transformation Strategies:

  By John Burke Group Vice President Oracle Applications Business Unit     I recently completed a business tour in Mexico, and was surprised by both the economic vibrancy of the country and the thought leadership expressed by many of the customers I met.  An example of the economic vibrancy of the country: across the street from my hotel was the local Bentley dealership, Coach Store, Yves Saint Laurent and of course a Starbucks.  I only made it to Starbucks.  Both the Coach Store and YSL had a line of folks waiting to get in... As for thought leadership, there were several illustrations only on the first day. I had the opportunity to meet with a branch of the Mexican Federal Government. Their questions were not about clerical task automation, far from it! We discussed citizen on-line access to fees and services - for example looking up the duty on an international goods shipment, or tracking that my taxes have been received, or the status of my request for a certain service.  Eligibility, policies and status.  Having an integrated rules or policy automation system that would allow businesses and citizens to access accurate information and ensure the proper collection of fees and payment for 3rd party provided services.    Then in the afternoon, I met with the owner of a roofing company (note: most roofs in Mexico are flat and made of cement).  This CEO started discussing how he wanted to transform his business from a cement products company to a service company and market 5-10-15 year service contracts which would guarantee the structural integrity of the roof and of course that the roof would remain waterproof.  Although his products were guaranteed, they required an annual inspection and most home owners never schedule that inspection until it is too late and water damage has occurred.  These emergency calls reduce his margin and reduce customer satisfaction.  This lead to a discussion of business models in general and why long term differentiation can only come from service, not just for the music or news industries, but also for roofing companies!    I completely agreed with the transformational concepts described in both meetings and quickly understood why there is a Bentley dealership near my hotel.

• SCSF for Visual Studio 2010

  The Smart Client Software Factory (SCSF) version for Visual Studio 2010 is supposed to be released sometime this week.  The updated (final?) source code is available on the patterns & practices site already, but I'm guessing it could be updated again due to changes found during the final testing. You'll need the Visual Studio 2010 SDK as well as the new versions of the Guidance Automation Extensions (GAX) and the Guidance Automation Toolkit (GAT) for the SCSF. • Ubuntu 11.04 Broadcom BCM4312 Not Working

  I have a HP MINI 210-1010NR and just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and I can't get my wireless to work.I have checked through multiple Q&A's throughout this FAQ and tried them all. When I go over the wireless thing at the top it says "Wireless Networks device not ready(firmware missing)." Okay, now here is my ~$ lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4 02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01) Also, when I try to open additional drivers it says that "Downloading package indexes failed, please check your network status."

• Does Ubuntu run on current Asus Transformer Prime?

  I've read instructions about dual boot Android / Transformer Prime (a significant factor in ordering one). Also about not working with /latest/ Transformer Prime (firmware / BIOS?) Also about imminent Ubuntu ARM support. Will I be able to run Ubuntu in a day or two when Transformer arrives? Also, am I right to assume I can restore Transformer to factory status if I break something in the attempt?

• Can't return to stock Android

  Whenever I try and uncompress the tar file, I get this: tar (child): nakasi-jro03d-factory-e102ba72.tg: Cannot open: No such file or directory tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now tar: Child returned status 2 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now I'm fairly new to Ubuntu. So I'm pretty sure that's my fault. So I just compress it manually using the GUI. But when I try to flash it, I get sudo: ./flash-all.sh: command not found Please help.

• Disable Facebook plug-in on default Firefox

  This may a Firefox question rather than Ubuntu but since the plug-in seem to be integrated with the Ubuntu status bar so I think I should try my luck here. Just update to Firefox 17 and not sure why now when I go to Facebook a icon show in launcher and a entry for Facebook at the top-right conner under the message icon. How can I disable this plug-in? • Nucleus Research Note: Oracle's Focus on Usability in Fusion Applications

It's always nice when an outside firm is savvy enough to acknowledge the value of a user experience strategy. • How does google calculate bounce rate?

  Hello We run a website where we sell access to a member area. We use Google analytics to optimize the site but i have a bounce rate in about 85%. The problem is that I'm not sure what count as a bounce and whats not. If a person go to my front page and log in directly. Will this count as a bounce because there is no analytics on the member pages or is Google smart enough to see that the link is on my side? Thanks a lot.

• Designing Algorithm Flowchart Application

  I need to develop an GUI application in C# where users can freely add conditional/statement blocks on the algorithm flowchart like the one shown below. By freely, I mean users can add a block on wherever the arrows are. I'm having some problems brainstorming how to approach this problem, especially what to choose for my datastructure to store the blocks. I was thinking LinkedList since everything follows a linear fashion and every node always has a head and tail, but the If/Else block (ba) has two branches (heads) to store, so this complicates things a little bit. How would a smart one approach problems like this? My apologies if this question isn't suited for Programmers stackexchange, but this is more of a conceptual problem rather than implementation problem so I figured this place was appropriate for the question.

• Cross platform mobile development VS Native Mobile Development: Present And Future.

  I just completed one year in Smart phone development, working on BlackBerry and Android and also developed one application exclusively targeted to nokia feature phones. And just a month ago I come to know about Titanium Appcelerator tool that enables cross platform development, but there are some developers who complain about it's sub-par functionalities. Even a little bit experience of mine says that developing in native environment rather than these cross platform tools will give you more advantages by giving a developer a chance to add more features with better performance. Do you have same experience? Or you find such cross development tools really useful regarding to advance functionality and performance? As porting (or co developing) same application to different mobile platform is common thing nowadays, what do you think will these cross platform tools evolve and force developers to get a hands on approach on them or majority will stick to the native development environment?

• Using Oracle BPM to Extend Oracle Applications

  Author: Srikant Subramaniam, Senior Principal Product Manager, Oracle Fusion Middleware Customers often modify applications to meet their specific business needs - varying regulatory requirements, unique business processes, product mix transition, etc. Traditional implementation practices for such modifications are typically invasive in nature and introduce risk into projects, affect time-to-market and ease of use, and ultimately increase the costs of running and maintaining the applications. Another downside of these traditional implementation practices is that they literally cast the application in stone, making it difficult for end-users to tailor their individual work environments to meet specific needs, without getting IT involved. For many businesses, however, IT lacks the capacity to support such rapid business changes. As a result, adopting innovative solutions to change the economics of customization becomes an imperative rather than a choice. Let's look at a banking process in Siebel Financial Services and Oracle Policy Automation (OPA) using Oracle Business Process Management. This approach makes modifications simple, quick to implement and easy to maintain/upgrade. The process model is based on the Loan Origination Process Accelerator, i.e., a set of ready to deploy business solutions developed by Oracle using Business Process Management (BPM) 11g, containing customizable and extensible pre-built processes to fit specific customer requirements. This use case is a branch-based loan origination process. Origination includes a number of steps ranging from accepting a loan application, applicant identity and background verification (Know Your Customer), credit assessment, risk evaluation and the eventual disbursal of funds (or rejection of the application). We use BPM to model all of these individual tasks and integrate (via web services) with: Siebel Financial Services and (simulated) backend applications: FLEXCUBE for loan management, Background Verification and Credit Rating. The process flow starts in Siebel when a customer applies for loan, switches to OPA for eligibility verification and product recommendations, before handing it off to BPM for approvals. OPA Connector for Siebel simplifies integration with Siebel’s web services framework by saving directly into Siebel the results from the self-service interview. This combination of user input and product recommendation invokes the BPM process for loan origination. At the end of the approval process, we update Siebel and the financial app to complete the loop. We use BPM Process Spaces to display role-specific data via dashboards, including the ability to track the status of a given process (flow trace). Loan Underwriters have visibility into the product mix (loan categories), status of loan applications (count of approved/rejected/pending), volume and values of loans approved per processing center, processing times, requested vs. approved amount and other relevant business metrics. Summary Oracle recommends the use of Fusion Middleware as an extensions platform for applications. This approach makes modifications simple, quick to implement and easy to maintain/upgrade applications (by moving customizations away from applications to the process layer). It is also easier to manage processes that span multiple applications by using Oracle BPM. • How to elevate engineering culture at large corporations?

  One thing I have realized working at a large corporation is that it doesn't matter how smart you are because if everyone else doesn't see the value in what you are doing then you are not going to get very far. It's much harder to convince 1000 people that a certain part of the software stack should be in groovy than it is to convince 10 people of the same thing. I'm curious how people go about elevating the engineering culture at large corporations because I've been running into walls left and right and I would like to be more proactive about how I go about it. I have been advocating tech talks and tech demos along with code reviews as potential solutions. Do people have other suggestions? Note that 1000 people and groovy are just representative examples. I am not married to groovy or any other language and 1000 people is meant to indicate large scale and how to go about teaching a large group of people about best practices and engineering principles in general.

• CUPS: HP printer DNS url

  The URL for my printer generated by hp-makeuri looks like this: hp:/net/Officejet_6500_E710n-z?ip=192.168.178.30 But the printer is on a dhcp enabled wifi network and so its IP-address does and could change. On the other hand my wifi router seems smart enough to have some sort of DNS: $ ping hp-6500a PING hp-6500a.fritz.box (192.168.178.30) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from hp-6500a.fritz.box (192.168.178.30): icmp_req=1 ttl=255 time=11.3 ms I tried to use the hostname in the CUPS URL/DeviceUID but it failed, any suggestions if this is possible and the correct format?

  As of July 10, 2012, Stack Overflow contains 3,345,864 questions, out of which 20,840 questions are tagged as "Algorithm" - this is less than 0.6% ! I find it disturbing. Many programmers have several years of academic education in computer science / software engineering. Most of them are smart... When asked, most would say that they love algorithms. Computer programming is generally about solving problems using algorithms... Yet, only 1 of 160 questions is tagged as algorithm related. What does it say about our profession?
