• How to manage permissions on a shared volume for OSX and ubuntu

  On my mac I'm using an unjournaled HFS partition to share files between OSX 10.8 and Ubuntu 12.04. It was a nice thought at first, because Time Machine will automatically backup the volume in OSX, but I soon noticed that OSX and Ubuntu mess with the permission in a way that makes things messy for me. So, in order to fully view and change files, I keep using chmod to apply permissions that which will allow me to fully use a document. But I don't understand why I have to keep applying changes over and over. Is possible to set some kind of permission permanently so that both operating systems will respect permanently? I guess 777 will work, but I thought that this is not a smart thing to do. But as long as 'others' does not get full access (third seven), I see a lock icon on the file in ubuntu.

• The Solution

  So I recently attended a class about time management as well as read the book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey.  Both have been instrumental in helping me get my priorities aligned as well as keep me focused. The reason I bring this up is that it gave me a great idea for a small application with which to create a great technical stack solution that would be easy to demo and explain.  Therefore, the project from this point forward with be the Liekhus.TimeTracker application which will bring some the time management skills that I have acquired into a technical implementation.  The idea is rather simple, but leverages some of the basic principles of Covey along with some of the worksheets that I garnered from class.  The basics are as such: 1) a plan is a must have and 2) write it down!  A plan not written down is just an idea.  How many times have you had an idea that didn’t materialize?  Exactly.  Hence why I am writing it all down now! The worksheet consists of a few simple columns that I will outline below as well as some modifications that I made according to the Covey habits.  The worksheet looks like the following: Status Issue Area CQ Notes P  F  L     1234   P  F  L     1234   P  F  L     1234   P  F  L     1234   P  F  L     1234   P  F  L     1234   P  F  L     1234   P  F  L     1234   P  F  L     1234   The idea is really simple and straightforward; you write down all your tasks and keep track of them along the way.  The status stands for (P)ending, (F)inished or (L)ater.  You write a quick title for the issue and select the CQ (Covey Quadrant) with which the issue occurs.  The notes section is for things that happen while you are working through the issue.  And last, but not least, is the Area column that I added as a way to identify the Role or Area of your life that this task falls within based upon Covey’s teachings. The second part of this application is a simple phone log that allows you to track your phone conversations throughout the day.  All of this is currently done on a sheet of paper, but being involved in technology, I want it to have bells and whistles.  Therefore, this is my simple idea for a project that will allow me to test my theories about coding and implementations.  Stay tuned as the next session will be flushing out the concept and coming up with user stories to begin the SCRUM process. • juju-local and cgroup-lite

  Im trying to configure juju-local on my virtual-box machine to test some environments, learn, play and then make some desition to deploy to my cloud. I follow the docs on juju page (https://juju.ubuntu.com/docs/getting-started.html, https://juju.ubuntu.com/docs/config-local.html) but always get this error on any service: status: "hook failed: install" i do some research and use juju-debug hooks and find that the install error was on cgroup-lite. Can anybody helpme? Thanks

• can't update nvida having error near the end of the install

  I had just got Ubuntu (first timer to Ubuntu so be very descriptive). I think there a problem with my Nvida update it won't let me update it. This is the name of the update in update manager NVIDIA binary xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU library. • Wireless is disabled by hardware switch on Dell Inspiron 1750

  I have a problem where Ubuntu (12.04) says there is a wireless network card, but it is disabled by a hardware switch. How do I turn it on? I checked the BIOS, and the wireless card is enabled there. Fn + F2 was also no success. The results of rfkill list: 0: brcmwl-0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes 1: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes sudo rfkill unblock wifi did nothing to the Wireless Status.

• Messaging indicator does not obey applications-blacklist

  Since upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04, the microblogging and instant messaging entries have reappeared in the messaging menu. I put symlinks in ~/.config/indicators/messages/applications-blacklist to deactivate empathy evolution gwibber.indicator ubuntuone-control-panel, but this does not seem to have any effect now. How can I remove these entries? I would like to remove the status entries as well, and keep only Thunderbird information.

• Is AdWords ad blocked from top spots of SERPs until it is reviewed?

  I have an AdWords ad and a keyword with a Quality Score of 10. Inferring from CPC from actual clicks, max CPC is set way beyond that of the third advertiser from the SERP for this keyword (there are three ads in the top). Still the ad is shown on the 4th spot which located either on the right or at the bottom of the SERP. The only catch is that the ad's status is "under review". Is it the reason why it's blocked from the top spots?

  Following this query on memento pattern, I have tried to put my understanding to test. Memento pattern stands for three things: Saving state of the "memento" object for its successful retrieval Saving carefully each valid "state" of the memento Encapsulating the saved states from the change inducer so that each state remains unaltered Have I achieved these three with my design? Problem This is a zero player game where the program is initialized with a particular set up of chess pawns - the knight and queen. Then program then needs to keep adding set of pawns or knights and queens so that each pawn is "safe" for the next one move of every other pawn. The condition is that either both pawns should be placed, or none of them should be placed. The chessboard with the most number of non conflicting knights and queens should be returned. • Should I index my mobile duplicate of my desktop website on google?

  I have a duplicate of http://he.thenamestork.com with the url http://he.thenamestork.com/mobile - all files are duplicated while the mobile version has a slightly different content. Notice that when I write 'mobile' I only mean regular HTML4 with smartphone friendly CSS. I have a series of redirects (using .htaccess) that allows smartphone users land directly on the mobile versions. But I wonder, shound I index the mobile version as well so those users will be able to get direct, faster links? And what is the proper way of doing that without causing problem in google search? I guess I'm asking if there's a way to get google display regular urls for desktop users and ../mobile/.. urls for smartphone users, and if it is smart SEOwise.

But disk health is ok(according to smart tools). I can not change my HDD right now. So decide to reduce disk operation. How do i prevent system to generate log file or any other file which are used to keep history? I know LOG file is very important but i don't care it right now. Please help.

• Desktop interface crashes after software updates

  Recently, after installing Ubuntu software updates on the evening of December 7th, 2012, my desktop interface crashes regularly leaving me with a command line screen with a long string of automated commands showing (I assume what goes on behind the pretty desktop). At first, I thought it was only crashing whenever I played DirectX games in WINE, but now it crashes if I open the native Firefox browser or if it's doing nothing at all but sitting there. Apport attempts to report the bugs after restart, but often they crash as well. I've done a SMART check on the hard drive, and everything report OK. No read errors, no bad sectors. I am using an Acer Extensa 4620Z Memory: 2.0 GiB Processor: Intel Pentium Dual CPU T2370 @ 1.73GHz x 2 GraphicsL: Intel 965GM x86/MMX/SSE2 OS: Ubuntu 12.10 32-bit Disk: 116.0 GB with 33.4 GB Available
