  I have just found a very good resource about Hekaton (In-memory OLTP feature in the SQL Server 2014). On the Codeplex site you can find the newest Hekaton samples - https://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/releases/view/114491. The latest samples we have were related to the CTP2 version but the newest will work with the RTM version.There are some issues fixed you might find if you tried to run the previous samples on the RTM version:Update (Apr 28, 2014): Fixed an issue where the isolation level for sample stored procedures demonstrating integrity checks was too low. The transaction isolation level for the following stored procedures was updated: Sales.uspInsertSpecialOfferProductinmem, Sales.uspDeleteSpecialOfferinmem, Production.uspInsertProductinmem, and Production.uspDeleteProductinmem.

• Inconsistent DHCP replies with Windows 2008R2 DHCP server

  I've got a Windows 2008R2 standard server running DHCP services. We've noticed that certain clients are receiving inconsistent DHCP replies. We have over 175 Windows workstations in this VLAN that don't seem to have trouble getting DHCP leases. However, PXE-booting clients trying to reach our DHCP server are able to get a lease inconsistently. Additionally, we tried using the "dhcping" tool against our DHCP server and found that roughly two of every three requests time out with "no answer" -- and this holds true when we set the timeout value on dhcping to 20seconds. After a failed attempt, however, we may get a dhcp lease reply immediately with dhcping. This leads me to believe that this issue isn't confined to PXE booting clients, but something more systemic with my LAN layer2 or DHCP. And that possibly my 175 windows clients are experiencing this in some form without my knowledge. We have over 30% of our scope available so the addresses are there. I was unable to find anything in the Windows server "DHCP-Server" log. Of course, my goal is to have my DHCP server reply to every request that it receives on the LAN!

  I have Ubuntu Server running on a headless box, which is right now, almost entirely doing only software RAID and feels a little underused. I'd like to get into using Ubuntu as a desktop a little more. What do I need to do (install/etc.) to get Gnome while keeping the box itself headless? I'm not sure which packages to install or which steps to take. I figure I'll just use X over the network (Xming or the like) but something like NX might work.

  I have installed an Ubuntu Server. It obviously comes with no graphical interface. I tried to install it with: apt-get install xserver-xorg xfonts* gnome gdm Then I got an error message trying to login with Gnome and eventually I uninstalled everything: apt-get remove xserver-xorg xfonts* gnome gdm However, it seems Ubuntu still has some scripts trying to launch Gnome since when starting I get: Starting GNOME Display Manager fail ... Stopping system v run level compatibility And the system stops forever (I know I can use ALT+F1) What should I modify to have this completely uninstalled? I cannit find anything on the rc2.d...

• Ubuntu server 13 hangs on boot

  I formatted my WD30EFRX 3TB SATA HDD as GPT with the following layout: 200 MB FAT32 (BOOTABLE) 50GB EXT4 (Mount point: /) 4 GB SWAP SPACE ~2.9 TB EXT4 (with no mount point) Then i created a Flash USB using Rufus 1.3.3 and the following ISO-image: ubuntu-13.04-server-amd64.iso. I used following configuration to create the USB: GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer FAT32 (16KB) I successfully booted from this USB on my Intel D510MO motherboard in UEFI mode (there were a black and white boot loader menu instead of a colorful GUI) and installed the OS. During the boot loader installation i saw it was grub-efi-amd64 as it must be. After installation i removed the flash drive and tried to boot the system, but just after a BIOS POST it hangs (there is a white blinking cursor at the left top corner of the black screen) and nothing happens. UEFI Mode is enabled in the BIOS configuration and i've updated the BIOS to the latest firmware. What went wrong, how i can confirm that system was installed properly? How can i boot the OS?

• Switching between ethernet interfaces on Ubuntu 10.04 SERVER

  I have ubuntu 10.04 "SERVER" installed on a system with two ehternet ports. I use only one at a time. I wanted to know if I can switch between ports without using ifup and ifdown every time. That means when I connect my Lan cable on eth0 it should work and it does. But when I disconnect the lan cable and connect it on eth1 I have to ifdown eth0 and only then it works. In my /etc/network/interfaces file I have configured both eth0 and eth1. there is no problem other than I have to switch it manually with ifdown and ifup everytime. Please guide. Thanks in advance

• Netdisco for Ubuntu server

  Has anyone had luck installing netdisco through apt-get? I couldn't get it to work. I tried netdisco-frontend, netdisco-backend, netdisco-common, netdisco-installer. I used the command: sudo apt-get install netdisco-common netdisco-frontend netdisco-backend Everything installed fine, but I can't get it running. It doesn't seem to have install to /usr/local/netdisco/. I have looked all over the internet and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this. I use server 12.04. Thanks!

• Trouble filtering using rsyslog as syslog server for router

  I am trying to configure rsyslog (Ubuntu 12.04 Server) to log events from my router. I found this link which got me most of the way there. I am able to get the events logged from the router, and since I don't them logged in syslog, I set up a filter in rsyslog.conf like this: :fromhost-ip, isequal, "192.168.2.1" /var/log/linksys.log & ~ This works, the only problem is now I am not getting any SSHD logs in auth.log. I am really stumped why this would be, SSHD is a local service. I tried using a different filter instead: :msg,contains, "RV042" /var/log/linksys.log & ~ since RV042 is the name of the router, but this doesn't log anything. Any ideas?

• Using Sql Server Change Data Capture with a frequently changing schema

  We are looking into enabling Sql Server Change Data Capture for a new subsystem we are building. It's not really because we need it, but we are being pushed for having a complete history traceability, and CDC would nicely solve this requirement with minimum effort on our parts. We are following an agile development process, which in this case means that we frequently make changes to the database schema, e.g. adding new columns, moving data to other columns, etc. We did a small test where we created a table, enabled CDC for that table, and then added a new column to the table. Changes to the new column is not registered in the CDC table. Is there a mechanism to update the CDC table to the new schema, and are there any best practices to how you deal with captured data when migrating the database schema?

• Network access lags for Win7 when server network utilization is high

  We have a Dell PE2950 file server running Windows 2008, hosting a DFS namespace of ~1.2 TB. This server has two Broadcom 1Gbps NICs teamed together. When there is high traffic going to the server across the network (greater than 200 Mbps), any Windows 7 client accessing a DFS share at the time experiences severe performance problems. For example: Computer A has an AutoCAD drawing opened directly from the DFS share. Performance is normal, not causing any issues. Computer B begins a file transfer, putting a 11GB file onto a different DFS namespace, on the same server Computer A immediately notices lag while using AutoCAD. The cursor momentarily freezes within AutoCAD every 10 seconds or so, and any browsing of the DFS share is extremely slow. Computer B completes file transfer, and performance resumes to normal for Computer A. This is only affecting Windows 7 clients, using a variety of hardware (desktop + laptop). All of our Windows XP clients see no performance impact during the file transfer. Things I have tried with no change: Had Computer A work from an entirely different RAID array from the file transfer destination Updated NIC drivers on clients and server Enabled TCP offload and receive side scaling on the server NIC (previously disabled when the issue began) Antivirus disabled during file transfer I am currently having a user test applications other than AutoCAD when the file transfer occurs, and will update the question with that result. Does anyone have any recommendations for resolution or additional troubleshooting steps?

  I'm currently trying to figure out some kind of set-up for my music collection. The music collection is located on my "main PC" and I'm using Banshee to play/manage the music. Since I'm often at a different location where I use my laptop I have a FTP server running on my main PC, use curlftpfs to mount the music in /home/username/Music and sync the Banshee DB/configuration via Dropbox. The problem at the moment is that Banshee skips songs very often when the connection is a little slower. I've been looking at some servers like Ampache but they are not really an option since they don't let me use Banshee (which means I have no ability to change metadata or rate songs). Syncing the whole collection to my laptop isn't an option either because of its size. It would be great if you had some ideas how to make my current set-up more reliable or maybe know an alternative.

• Upgrade Ubuntu Server from 11.04 to 11.10 without internet connection

  We have application software that really likes Ubuntu Server 11.10. I need to upgrade several 11.04 servers to this version. Two questions: The servers that need to be upgraded do not have Internet access in our datacenter due to security reasons. I need to download the updates/upgrades to a secure system and then transfer them to the datacenter servers for installation. Is anyone aware of the steps involved? How/where do I get the 11.10 updates from? I don't see an option on the Ubuntu site for downloading specific versions of the OS and/or upgrades.

• Windows Server - share files without access for administrator

  We have a MS Windows Server 2008 R8 based server that is administrated by our IT department. We would like to achieve two things simultaneously: A folder on the server, containing several thousand files (new files added frequently) that is accessible to some ActiveDirectory users (e.g. board of directors) but is not accessible by IT department employees IT department employees still maintain rights to administrate the server, including installing new software and services We already checked some solutions: Using NTFS access rights. Unfortunately IT (members of "Administrators" group) can set themselves as new owners of the files and change the permissions so that they gain access to the files. Enabling EFS. Unfortunately even if you do not allow IT to access files, they still can disable EFS completely because they have administrative rights. Moreover as far as I know you have to manually add permissions for all users but the owner for each new file - very inconvenient. Creating a new role for the IT department that has all the privileges apart from taking ownership of files. Unfortunately if you're not a member of the Administrators group, you cannot install new software, no matter what privileges you add to the role. TrueCrypt - nice free encryption software, but with poor sharing capabilities. You can either mount an encryption container on the server (and then IT has access to its contents) or you mount them locally but only one user can mount it for writing. AxCrypt - free encryption software that enables file-by-file encryption on the server. There are some disadvantages though - you have to manually encrypt each new file added. The files have their extensions changes. You can only set one password for all files (so all users have to know this one password). Any other ideas? Our budget is limited so enterprise-class software from Symantec or PGP would probably be not an option.

  I am going to be making an online single player browser game. The online element is needed so that a player can login and store the state of their game. This will include things like what buildings have been made and where they have been positioned as well as the users personal statistics and achievements. At this point in time, I am expecting all of the game logic to be performed client side So far, I am thinking I will use flash for creating the client side of the game. I am also creating a MySQL database to store all the users information. My question is how do I connect the two. Presumably I will need some sort of server application which will listen for incoming requests from any clients, perform the SQL query and then return the data. Does anyone have any recommendations of what technology/language to use?

• Default /server-status location not inheriting in Apache

  I'm having a problem getting /server-status to work Apache 2.2.14 on Ubuntu Server 10.04.1. The default symlinks for status.load and status.conf are present in /etc/apache2/mods-enabled. The status.conf does include the location /server-status and appropriate allow/deny directives. However, the only vhost I have in sites-enabled looks like this. The idea is to proxy anything with a Tomcat URL to a cluster of tomcats, and anything else to an IIS box. However, this seems to result in requests to /server-status being sent to IIS. Copying the /server-status in explicitly to the Vhost configuration doesn't seem to help, no matter what order I use.   I have dedicated server where I planned to run virtualbox virtual machines. Since the VMs are managed with vagrant/chef I may end up with many different ones. I thought it would be a great idea to deploy a dnsmasq on the server, which is going to dynamically assign the ip addresses to the VMs. Since each Vagrant/Chef recipe is configured to set the VM's host name I can find/reference the appropriate VM by the host name. Finally, the entire infrastructure is not directly accessible via internet, so the dedicated Server is the OpenVPN host. On the Dedicated Server I don't see the vboxnet0 interface but VirtualBox is installed without GUI. Accessing of virtual boxes via ssh works fine. Did I miss smth? DNSMasq must serve the local VMs only, otherwise there is a chance that local DNSMasq start to serve other server's on the network, what I don't want. Because I don't see vboxnet0 I tend to use no-dhcp-interface=eth0 config option. Are there any thoughts on that despite, the fact that a second NW-card (which is not the case), might start serving DHCP-Requests? How should I config the VM's network interface that I am able to access it via OpenVPN and resolve the hostnames using the DNSMasq. I think it should be the host-only network card. Should I do bridging in the OpenVPN config or is it sufficient to use routing.

  I have 2008 r2 64bit server that is stuck on installing updates. It shows message "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing 57 of 61.." This message is shown for 3 hours now. I was trying to connect to this server using mmc. runas /user:AdministratorAccountName@ComputerName "mmc %windir%\system32\compmgmt.msc" RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - mmc C:\Windows\system32\compmgmt.msc 1311: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. What else can I do? Update: Remote Desktop does not work. It just disappear after entering username and password from Win7-64 computer Update: I have disconected server. Now Server Manager in Roles Summary shows message "Unexpected error refreshing Server Manager: The remote procedure call failed." Event log shows Could not discover the state of the system. • "Network Error - 53" while trying to mount NFS share in Windows Server 2008 client

  CentOS | Windows 2008 I've got a CentOS 5.5 server running nfsd. On the Windows side, I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. I have the "Files Services" server role enabled and both Client for NFS and Server for NFS are on. I'm able to successfully connect/mount to the CentOS NFS share from other linux systems but am experiencing errors connecting to it from Windows. When I try to connect, I get the following: C:\Users\fooadmin>mount -o anon 10.10.10.10:/share/ z: Network Error - 53 Type 'NET HELPMSG 53' for more information. (IP and share name have been changed to protect the innocent :-) ) Additional information: I've verified low-level network connectivity between the Windows client and the NFS server with telnet (to the NFS on TCP/2049) so I know the port is open. I've further confirmed that inbound and outbound firewall ports are present and enabled. I came across a Microsoft tech note that suggested changing the "Provider Order" so "NFS Network" is above other items like Microsoft Windows Network. I changed this and restarted the NFS client - no luck. I've confirmed that the share folder on the NFS server is readable/writable by all (777) I've tried other variations of the mount command like: mount 10.10.10.10:/share/ z: and mount 10.10.10.10:/share z: and mount -o anon mtype=hard \\10.10.10.10:/share * No luck. As per the command output, I tried typing NET HELPMSG 53 but that doesn't tell me much. Just "The network path was not found". I'm lost on how to proceed with troubleshooting. Any ideas?

• Building vs buying a server for an academic lab [closed]

  I'm looking for advice on the classic build vs buy question. We need a new linux server to run Matlab computation on in our lab (academic). Matlab parallel computing toolbox licence allows up to 12 local workers so we are aiming at a 12 core server with 4GB memory per core (total of 48gb). The system will have an SSD for the OS and a raid-5 (4x2tb) for data. I looked around and found a (relatively) cheap vendor, Silicon Mechanics, that offers a system to our liking (specs below) for $6732. However, buying the components from newegg cost only $4464! The difference is $2268 which is 50% of the base cost. If buying from a company can be thought of as a sort of insurance, basically my premiums are of 50% of the base cost which to me sounds like a lot. Of course any downtime is bad, but the work is not "mission critical", i.e. if it takes a few days to fix it when it breaks its no the end of the world. If it takes weeks to months then its a problem. If it breaks 2-3 times in 3 years, not too bad. If it breaks every month not good. In term of build experience, I set up a linux cluster in grad school (from existing computers) and I build my home pcs but I never built a server before. • Can only connect to file server on second attempt

  I have a FreeNas file server on my local network and I usually connect to it from Windows and Ubuntu computers. Ever since I have upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 Ubuntu will only connect after a second attempt. By which I mean, I will browse to it via the file manager and once I click on the link in "Bookmarks" it complains that it could not connect. If I then try again it connects successfully and will keep up it's connection until the laptop is suspended or looses connection to the LAN for whatever reason. This isn't much of a problem as I don't mind having to click twice but my real problem is that this means that my scheduled backup will complain that it cannot connect to the storage device if it has not already been accessed during the current session. If there is some way to either stop the issue all together or to force the backup tool (default) to immediately have a second attempt at connecting.
