• Verifying Time Machine backups

  I'm preparing my system for a Snow Leopard upgrade, and I prepare for the worst case scenario: full reinstall and restore. I would like to verify that my Time Machine backups are valid, and will restore correctly. My Time Machine backups go to a Linux server running Netatalk, and the backups complete successfully. How do I do a test restore to an alternative location, or otherwise verify my data without overwriting any existing files? Do I need to save anything in particular externally to make sure I can access the backups if I have to reinstall from scratch?

• Safari corrupting downloads?

  First off, a bit of background: I had to do an erase and install about 2-3 weeks ago, so this is a fresh, up-to-date installation of Snow Leopard we're dealing with. That said, I decided recently to branch out from simply programming PHP in a text editor and explore some of the other technologies I keep hearing about, and picked up Drupal, Joomla, and the Zend Framework from their respective official sites. Latest complete, stable builds for all 3. Drupal and Joomla downloaded without a problem, but when I put them in my /~username/Sites folder, XAMPP pretends they're not there, even if I restart Apache or the laptop itself. Zend's archive won't open at all. Is Safari corrupting the downloads, or are there other issues in play that can be investigated?

• How can I kill and wait for background processes to finish in a shell script when I Ctrl+C it?

  I'm trying to set up a shell script so that it runs background processes, and when I ctrl+C the shell script, it kills the children, then exits. The best that I've managed to come up with is this. It appears that kill 0 -INT also kills the script before the wait happens, so the shell script dies before the children complete. • SonicOS Enhanced 5.8.1.2 L2TP VPN Authentication Failed

  I have a SonicWall TZ 215 running SonicOS Enhanced 5.8.1.2-6o. I have configured the L2TP VPN using the default crypto suite ESP: 3DES/HMAC SHA1 (IKE). Proposals are as such: IKE (Phase 1) Proposal DH Group: Group 2 Encryption: 3DES Authentication: SHA1 Life Time (seconds): 28800 Ipsec (Phase 2) Proposal Protocol: ESP Encryption: 3DES Authentication: SHA1 Enable Perfect Forward Secrecy DISABLED Life Time (seconds): 28800 When attempting to connect via my Mac OS X client I get an authentication error. It appears to pass the pre-authentication but fails to complete. I am at a complete loss. I reconfigured from scratch multiple times...used simple usernames and passwords to verify this wasn't a miskeyed password issue.   Is it posible to get the original Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit for the Acer Aspire 5740G? I bought this notebook and the license for this Windows is in the package.   I have an error with a new virtual host that I can't figure out.. My .htaccess doesn't have web access (403). [Thu Oct 31 17:51:01 2013] [crit] [client ] (13)Permission denied: /srv/data_disk/www /site.dev/.htaccess pcfg_openfile: unable to check htaccess file, ensure it is readable I have set the permissions for the complete htdocs folder to 755, and to owned by my regular user and group (www-data). I have other vhosts set up with the same user and lesser permissions (rw-rw---) on the .htaccess. The virtual hosts are also setup in the same way.. as far a I can tell.. Thanks!

• Create restricted user on Debian server

  I want to create a user account for each of the key programs installed on my debian server. For example, for the following programs: Tomcat Nginx Supervisor PostgreSQL This seems to be recommended based on my reading online. However, I want to restrict these user accounts as much as possible, so that they dont have a shell login, dont have access to the other programs and are as limited as possible but still functional. Would anyone mind telling me how this could be achieved? My reading so far suggests this: echo "/usr/sbin/nologin" >> /etc/shells useradd -s /usr/sbin/nologin tomcat But I think there may be a more complete way of doing it. EDIT: I'm using debian squeeze

• How do I make Chrome's Omnibar behave more like the Firefox Awesome bar?

  One of my favorite features of the Firefox awesome bar is that I can simply type a substring of any URL or page title in my history and it finds all matches sorted by how frequently they were accessed. Example: I simply type "ask" when I want to ask something on stackoverflow.com., "inbox" goes to my GMail Inbox and so on because the substring matches any part of the URL or the page title. Chrome's Omnibar is quite frustrating in this area. I am not able to predict what it's gonna fetch and I seem to have no way to train the thing to do my bidding. I have turned unchecked the option that says: "Use a suggestion service to help complete searches and URLs typed..." but there has been no noticeable improvement. Any clues how I can make the Omnibar behave?

This is the setup I am planning, basically for a start - - Cherokee (instead of Apache) for serving dynamic content (python-based application), and Nginx for serving static files. Since, I am a beginner, what have I, to lose? So, can someone, from your experience, please tell me, what I'd lose by choosing Cherokee over Apache for serving dynamic content in PHP/Python/whatever? Anything other than the fact that there's lot of documentation, many people who can help when there's an issue etc as Apache is well established and the most popular web server? Again, my intention is not to spurt a flame war here. Just wanted to know if Cherokee would be better than Apache in terms of performance, reliability, and speed, when it matters (peak load times). Also, I heard it's a lot faster than Apache in serving dynamic content, is it true?

  I have a legacy application that emails via php. 5% of the emails aren't going through. The solution is to route all email through a fancy verified mail server like Amazon's SES. I am having some trouble implementing this functionality. It seems this guy had a similar problem. My question is where in postfix can I set a filter that will take as input the the message headers, so that I can manually set the From field and the Reply-To field to [email protected] and [email protected], respectively. Where whatever_php_wants is dictated by the php program and the users registration email. I know where to set the noreply portion, but I don't know the exact place in postfix's configuration files where I can intercept complete emails and pass them to a script. I'm a complete beginner when it comes to this - what is happening, and how can I fix it? A search of my system for "php_msyql.dll" reveals nothing. Does it have to do with how I compiled it? I don't have the original version of php that came with the mac, I think - I may have reinstalled it somewhere along the way. Any help would be appreciated!

• Demote 2003 DC from within Directory Services Restore Mode

  We've had a child DC fail on us, and can't get into Windows on it as Directory Services is failing. A restore of the backed-up active directory hasn't worked due to a corruption, and so we've decided to demote the child DC and - for now - run AD from the PDC only. However, dcpromo /demote doesn't work from Safe Mode or Directory Services Restore Mode. We don't want to do a complete reinstall, as we have Exchange running on the child DC. Anyone know how (if?) we can demote the DC within safe mode or otherwise get into windows? Thanks

  I have been a fulltime student recently working on graduate work to complete a graduate degree. While continuing my studies I have maintained my computer hobby. However, recently my computer hobby has been threatening to turn into a full-fledged side business. Because I am starting to have people come to me for computer help who I have never met before (who generally heard word-of-mouth from other people whose computers I looked at) I am seriously considering putting my conditions for working on a computer into writing (for potential damage control and perhaps liability reasons). Are there any standards for this that I should reference? Should responsibility be waived for times when the computer is left in my care or any time I look at a machine? Any advice you can provide here would be appreciated. What other lessons have you learned that I should be aware of in relation to helping people while continuing my studies as a hobby? • User profile and desktop unclickable and unviewable from windows explorer

  Situation: Windows Vista, latest updates. After restarting to complete an installation, I find myself looking at a totally black windows desktop without any icons. The start menu and taskbar, including quickstart icons, appears. Some, but not all task bar tray icons appear. The systems seems stable. When I open Windows Explorer and click "desktop" in the folder treeview, the cursor immediately jumps back to the previously selected item. No error. Same when clicking on my user's profile or my documents. When I try "save as" in, say, Notepad, nothing happens, the dialog box (which defaults to "my documents") doesn't even show. Again, no error. Nothing serious afaict in the event log. Typing something Start Search shows "Search failed to initialize". Anybody ever encountered such abomination?

• Free MP3 merge for Mac OS X

  Hi, I need to merge several MP3 tracks into one, I use Mac OS X 10.5. I want to convert all my Harry Potter CDs to my iPod, but not every minute a new track (as it is on the CDs) but chapterwise. Where can I get a free software? Help, please! (I've already tried: Jfuse, but after I had merged a few chapters it said I had to buy it; emicsoft VOB Converter for Mac; File Stitcher; but since they all were shareware, for free they would only let me merge 2 files at once (that would take me days) or half of each file which is useless of course; iTunes advanced settings ("join CD tracks") when importing the CDs, but it would let me only join the complete CD, not chapters...) • SCCM 2007 managing hosts in non trusted forest

  I have an implementation of SCCM 2007 in forest "A" that manages hosts in that Windows 2008 forest. There is another forest/domain, "B", which I have no trust with that I need to manage hosts in as well. I don't need to push out clients from the SCCM console, I am going to install them manually. I just need the hosts in domain "B" to connect back to the forest/domain "A" for management purposes. To date, I have not added any AD objects to domain "B" for hosts to query for site, SLP or management point info. I am installing the hosts with the command line: ccmsetup.exe /mp:SCCM_Server /site:mysite SCCM_Server = FQDN of my sccm server (which is resolvable by the client) There are no ACL's between the two servers. From the logs, I can see the install complete and the client tries to query the local AD for the site info for "mysite" but it can't find it and it stops and never connects. Can anyone give me some direction as to how this should be setup?

• Windows DVD Maker on Windows 8?

  Something I really miss in Windows 8 is the Windows DVD Maker. I tried to get it running on Windows 8 by copying the DVD Maker directory from Windows 7 over to Windows 8. When I run it, I get the following error: I had hoped that this could be resolved by installing the Media Center add-on for Windows 8, but that did not have any effect. Several forum posts have suggested installing a codec pack such as the K-Lite codec pack, but I have always had bad experiences with those. I did, however, try to install the Shark007 codec pack, but that didn't work either. I also tried running the following commands (which did complete successfully, mind you) in an elevated command prompt, but they didn't change the outcome. regsvr32 msmpeg2vdec.dll regsvr32 msmpeg2adec.dll regsvr32 msmpeg2enc.dll I know there are other DVD making programs out there, some are even free, but the few I have tried do not compare to Windows DVD Maker's simplicity and beauty. Is there any way to make it work on Windows 8?

• Microsoft Entourage/Exchange Server problem: all objects disappeared from server - still in some form on the client

  One of our employees works with Entourage on his MacBook Pro (OSX 10.6) accessing Exchange Server 2007. Last Friday morning, I think while working over a VPN, Entourage (I think it was Entourage) deleted all his objects (mail, calendar, contacts) on the server and while creating a lot of strange folders (starting with underscores) on the client. The local data seems to be there, but not in a consistent form. Since the user's mailbox is rather big, I suspect, that there was some kind of "move" operation which did not complete. I tried to export the data, but the export stops because of a corrupted object. Is there a tool or another way to export or retrieve the local data? Edit - FYI: we solved the problem getting his data from the previous night's backup.
