  • KB2667402 update fails to install with 0x80004005. Yet it's also showing as installed

    I've got 15 Windows 2008 R2 x64 servers that I manage with SCCM2012. I've noticed during my Windows updates reporting that there's two boxes that are showing as 'error' for total updates installed. Digging around, it looks like the update that is failing to install is KB2667402. The Software Centre on the server itself shows the following: The software change returned error code 0x80004005(-2147467259). So SCCM thinks it hasn't installed the update. However, if I go to the Programs and Features application and select 'Windows Updates', I can see an entry for KB2667402: If I try and uninstall this, I get an error: An error occurred. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled If I try and download the patch from Microsoft directly, I get the same error installing as displayed in Software Centre. The only odd thing about this setup that I can think would affect this is that I run the RDP service on a non-standard port. However, I do this across all the servers, so it seems odd that it would fail on just 2 out of 15.   • Volume Shadow Copy Remotely?

    I'm currently running a Microsoft Server 2008 R2 box and want to utilize Volume Shadow Copy but my development machine doesn't have enough hard drive space for 30 days worth of copies, which is what I am aiming for and currently only have 5 days of backups. I have another Windows XP box and I was wondering if it was possible to remotely store the shadow copy images in my remote XP box. If it isn't possible with the built in Volume Shadow Copy, is there an open source alternative that I can utilize that has the same or similar functionality?

  • hyperv machine guest loads slow

    this is by far one of the strangest things I have seen. I have a win 2008R2 cluster with a CSV. the CSV itself is on an iSCSI storage (hitachi HUS 110) basic config of the two hosts in the cluster is Dell R610 Win 2008 R2 with all patches 64GB 1 NIC for host access 2 NICs for guest access 2 NICs for iSCSI these machine work great and I can load a 2008R2 test guest machine on them in less than 90 seconds after the above config is running for over a year, I now need to add a new host. now the host is Dell R620 (Still intel but different CPU) Win 2008 R2 with all patches 64GB 1 NIC for host access 2 NICs for guest access 2 NICs for iSCSI I added this new host to the domain and to the cluster, I gave it access to the CSV and I tried loading the same guest machine that loads in 90 seconds in the other hosts. the machine loads in about 6 minutes. no matter how many times I try this the old hosts load the machine in about 90 seconds and this new host in around 6 minutes to eliminate any problems with the iSCSI connection, I added a new LUN and directly accessed it from the new host and I was working at around 300MB/s so no problem there. I also tested the connection between the other hosts and the new one and network is working fine there too. to eliminate problems in HyperV, I copied the machine to the local disk of the new host and it loaded in less than 20 seconds. now is the point were things get a lot stranger: in my tests I tried installing a fresh windows guest machine to the CSV from the new host. I noticed that while the fresh windows was installing, my test guest was loading in less than 90 seconds even on the new host (I repeated this a few times). If I paused the fresh install guest and tried loading the test guest again it loaded in 6 minutes. and again after I resumed the guest installation the test guest loaded fast. after the fresh windows was also loaded, I ran tests loading the fresh window and my test machine. each one of them loaded in about 5 minutes when I tried loading them separately. however when I started both of them in the same time they both loaded in around 2.5 minutes it seems that the iSCSI disk access is only working if it is under some load (although I never got to above 10% utilization according to the task manager) does anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

    I'm setting up DB auto failover in C# with SQL Server 2008 and I have a 'high safety with automatic failover mirror' using a witness setup and my connection string looks like "Server=tcp:DC01; Failover Partner=tcp:DC02; database=dbname; uid=sewebsite;pwd=somerndpwd;Connect Timeout=10;Pooling=True;" During testing, when I turn off the SQL Server service on the principal server the auto failover works like a charm, but if I take the principal server offline (by shutting down the server or killing the network card) auto failover does not work and my website just times out. I found this article where the second last post suggests that its because we are using named pipes which does not work when the principal goes offline, but we force TCP in our connection string. What am I missing to get this DB auto failover working?

How can I do the same thing on Windows Server 2003 or 2008? Is there a way to call a batch file or executable that will run my task, capture the output, and email it only if there is output? I have applied a Group Policy to clean temporary internet files on exit i.e to delete all temporary internet files when users close the browser. But the group policy doesn't seem to work as user profile size keeps on increasing and the major space is occupied by temporary internet files therefore increasing the disk usage.     I have 2 servers set in Mirroring High-safety. One is Principal and another in Mirror. Currently I have 2 snapshots of a Production database (100 GB size) created on Principal server (for no_lock purpose of massive select processes) and 2 snapshots on the mirror server for the same database for reporting purposes. I know snapshots reduce performance of source databases but I am not sure if snapshots from mirror server have any impact on principal server's performance. thanks,

I'd like to take this: MyType type_obj = new MyType(); MyLongerType longer_type_obj = new LongerType() To this: MyType type_obj = new MyType(); LongerType longer_type_obj = new LongerType() I have found some macros for this on the web, but they seem to be for an older version of Visual Studio (< 2008). Here is one from 2000. Edit: Further digging in Google turned up this one: http://www.omegacoder.com/?p=8 It seems to work to align equals signs, but I haven't yet figured out if it can align the local variable names, too. Still no clue as to whether I could just get it to perform this sort of behavior with a Ctrl E+D, although that might not be practical considering how it works. (It aligns going down from the line which currently has focus.)

    I don't know much about Networking, So excuse me if I am raising some basic issues. I have a LAN where there is a Windows Server 2008R2 with some clients connected to it. The clients are not joined to the domain of the Server (they are in a WORKGROUP). I have set up a VPS on the server machine (PPTP) with a Static address pool of range 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.10 but the LAN range itself is 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254. When I connect to the server from another location over the internet, I can just see the server and I can not see the other clients which are in the same LAN as the server. what to do to see the other clients? a friend of mine said that you should use the ADD ROUTE command. Beacuse of that I used this command as my title. What would be the best way to address this problem? Thanks

There was 1 Computer (I don't know if Windows Server or plain Windows 7 - the server) and 3 other computers (Windows 7 - the clients). As soon as the Windows 7 clients were started, they all started up the same image (Don't know if the same image file or just the same state) over network and were able to work on the computer. As soon as the machine was shutdown, all the changes made to the system were erased. I'm trying to determine if the application is re-using it's connection to the SQL server or is creating new connections on a regular basis. Using SQL Profiler I've audited for login events, but that appears to generate an event every time a SQL statement is executed even with apps that I know are maintaining their connection to SQL.

  • LDAP authentication: Windows Server2k3 vs. 2k8

    We have around 70% linux users, all of which are configured to authenticate against Active Directory through LDAP. In order for this to work, we used the "Windows Services for Unix" under Windows Server 2003, and it all works fine. We are now at a point where the server running this contraption is getting a bit tired and will be replaced with a newer machine, running Windows Server 2008 (where the relevant services such as user name mapping and password changes, etc., are integrated with the OS). And here's the rub: If a new user is configured through the Win2k3 server, then it all works fine. If the same thing is done through the Win2k8 server, then : The ADS plugin on the 2k3 server does not recognize it and behaves as if the UNIX attributes were never set. The user cannot authenticate against ADS using LDAP. Has anybody encountered this problem? If so, how did you overcome this? If you need any additional information to provide further help, just ask and I shall provide it.

    We have a Windows 8 machine that we installed SQL Server 2005 on first. We then uninstalled it and installed SQL Server 2012 - unsuccessfully. The installation wizard hung at the point where it says: SqlEngineDBStartConfigAction_install_configrc_Cpu64 The event log showed the following error: The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service terminated with the following service-specific error: WARNING: You have until SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) to logoff. If you have not logged off at this time, your session will be disconnected, and any open files or devices you have open may lose data. We got the same error while trying to start the service. We tried uninstalling and re-installing but faced the same issue. Any help would be appreciated.
