  • Sycronizing/deploying scripts across several systems

    I have a few time consuming tasks that I like to spread across several computers. These tasks require running an identical ruby or python script (or series of scripts that call each other) on each machine. The machines will a separate config file telling the script what portion of the task to complete. I want to figure out the best way to syncronize the scripts on these machines prior to running them. Up until now, I have been making changes to a copy of the script on a network share and then copying a fresh copy to each machine when I want to run it. But this is cumbersome and leaves a chance for error ( e.g missing a file on the copy or not clicking "copy and replace"). Lets assume the systems are standard windows machines that are not dedicated to this task and I don't need to run these scripts all the time (so I don't want a solution that runs 24/7 and always keeps them up to date, I'd prefer something that pushes/pulls on command). My thoughts on various options: Simple adaptation of my current workflow: Keep the originals on the network drive, but write a batch file that copies over the latest version of the scripts so everything is a one-click operation. Requires action on each system, but that's not the end of the world (since each one usually needs their configuration file changed slightly too). Put everything in a Mercurial/Git reposotory and pull a fresh copy onto each node. Going straight to the repo from each machine would guarantee a current version (and would have the fringe benefit of allowing edits to the script to be made from any machine). Cons would be that it requires VCS to be installed on each machine and there might be some pains dealing with authentication since I wouldn't use a public repo. Open up write access on a shared folder and write a script to use rsync (or similar) to push the changes out to all of the machines at once. This gets a current version on every machine (though you would have to change the script if you want to omit a machine or add a new one). Possible issue would be that each computer has to allow write access. Dropbox is a reasonable suggestion (and could work well) but I dont want to use an external service and I'd prefer not to have to have dropbox running 24/7 on systems that would normally not need it. Is there something simple that I am missing? Some tool designed expressly for doing this kind of thing? Otherwise I am leaning toward just tying all of the systems into Mercurial since, while it requires extra software, it is a little more robust than writing a batch file (e.g. if I split part of a script into a separate module, Mercurial will know what to do whereas I would have to add a line to the batch file).

    I want to know how is data I/O takes place on flash drives which are typically EEPROM's . I thought so as I was writing a C Program that involves file handling . For a normal HDD , that would involve returning the file pointer and reading or writing data to the disk which would be done by read/write HEAD . While in EEPROM's there is no read/write head , as it's works on mnemonic commands , So how come does the C file handling program works when I apply it to a file on flash drive ?

I want that all the files created under /home/ directory has group write permission by default. I don't want specific folder or specific user but for all users folder inside /home directory Is it ok to do , or there is any other solution for that

  • SQL Server on VMWare - is transaction log corruption possible?

    Scenario: SQL Server 2005 or 2008, Windows 2008 OS. Running in a VM hosted on VMWare ESX server. Is there any known issue with VMWare when it caches pass-through write request and it never reaches the disk, while SQL Server "thinks" that write actually happened? This may lead to transaction log corruption in case of power failure or VM reboot. Just overheard the conversation but couldn't find it in relation to ESX.

  • How can I retrieve statistics from my ghost cast server?

    I have a GhostCast server running for deploying images. I would like to have each ghost cast session to write to a file ( can be multiple text files or append to one file already there ) statistics. I know this is possible based on the options GhostCast software provides for writing to a log file, but I would like this automated for every image being backed up and restored. I don't want to have my employees click write to a new file every time. Is this possible?

  • Preventing users from deleting SQL data

    We just purchased a program that requires the users to have an account in the MS SQL server, with read/write access to the program's database. My concern is that since these users will now have write access to the database, they could directly connect to the SQL server outside of the program's client and then mess with the data directly in the tables. Is there anyway I can prevent access to the database while still allowing access via the client program?

  • Network share permission issues

    I have an IIS server running a site, appPool is running under local system, this is done because its easier to have full permissions to certificates and other file based resources on the local server. Problem is when I try write or copy a file to a network share, permissions are obviously not in place on the remote system for the IIS server local system. Is it possible to grant permissions on the remote system to include read/write or even full access to the IIS servers local system account?

    Possible Duplicate: sudo unable to write to /etc/profile I want to do: echo "something" >> /etc/config_file But, since only the root user has write permission to this file, I can't do that. But this: sudo echo "something" >> /etc/config_file also doesn't work. Is there any way to append to a file in that situation without having to first open it with a sudo'd editor and then appending the new content by hand?

    I have a Classic ASP page that creates a CDO.Message object to send email. The code works on Window Server 2003 but not 2008. On 2008 an "Access is denied" error gets thrown.   • Redirect batch stderr to file

    I have a batch file that executes a java application. I'm trying to modify it so that whenever an exception occurs, it'll write the STDERR out to a file. It looks something like this: start java something.jar method %1 %2 2>> log.txt Is there a way I can write the arguments %1 and %2 to the log.txt file as well? I don't want to write it to the log file everytime this batch file gets called, only when an exception occurs. I tried searching for a way to redirect STDERR into a variable, but I couldn't figure it out. If the connection is successful, I can verify that ServerConnection.ConnectTimeout is set to 2 (seconds), but when I supply a bogus name for the SQL Server instance, it still attempts to connect to it for ~ 15 seconds (which is I believe the default timeout value). Does anyone have experience with setting SMO connection timeout? Thank you in advance.

I am intrigued by the possibilities of BD-J and wondering just how far the technology can be taken. For instance: Could I write a twitter, facebook, rss reader, or email client? Can I write a game which would allows people to play each other over the web from their own tv? Could I write a DVR app which stored tv shows on the thumbdrive plugged into the player. Can I run my applications from a thumbdrive or do I need to put them on a Blu Ray disk? Does anyone have real experience with BD-J? How do you like it as a development platform? How would you recommend getting started? Can I develop in BD-J using open source tools like Eclipse, Maven, etc...

    I am communicating with a server, each message sent to the server has to be padded with the length of the message, unsigned int len = htonl(msg.size()); In C running the length through htonl and padding the message works, in Java AFAIK byte order is already in network order so I assumed all I have to do is write the string length before the message to the stream, but this does not work am I missing something? stream.write(msg.length()); stream.write(msg.getBytes()); Stream is an OutputStream.

  • Create creative diagrams or find someone creative

    This question might be slightly non-techy/dev, but I am sure many of you had a similar problem. We code, write test-cases, put comments in source-code (!), put messages in svn commit, write comments in tracked issues. We create ERD/class/usecase/.. diagrams with whatever tool. We might write user-manuals, wikis, guidelines,.. Not everyones cup of tea, but usually practice makes a good tech writer (I experienced that). Now comes the point: Once in a while we need to supply system overview diagrams, drawings of architecure,.. that look appealing to non-technical people, and no, we dont have a marketing department with designers waiting for our input or a $$$$ design company doing our corporate design. If I try to do that, it a) takes forever b) I might not have the tools and c) looks like crap and not like something I want to see in a slideshow. Whats your experience or recipe ? Is there something like RENT-A-DESIGNER ? cheers

    Hi, I am getting java.io.EOFException while reading a binary block from lucene index. I am storing java object as byte-array in lucene index field and reading it when hit occurs. Here is stack trace : Caused by: java.io.EOFException at java.io.ObjectInputStream$PeekInputStream.readFully(ObjectInputStream.java:2281) at java.io.ObjectInputStream$BlockDataInputStream.readShort(ObjectInputStream.java:2750) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readStreamHeader(ObjectInputStream.java:780) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.(ObjectInputStream.java:280) at org.terracotta.modules.searchable.util.SerializationUtil$OIS.(SerializationUtil.java:20) I have some background threads which write into index. But i buffer them and then write them at once like 1000. Occasionally I also issue optimize() on index. When I write, I am re-opening IndexReader. Ex: I have a model called Event and its same as doing Event.find(id) (I dont want to use find inside my controller and I want my controller to use a named scoped (for future flexibility)) So I have written a named scoped named_scope :from_id, lambda { |id| {:conditions = ['id= ?', id] } } and I'm calling it from my controller like Event.from_id(id) But my problems is it returns Event object array not only one object Ex: if I want to get event name I have to write event = Event.from_id(id) event[0].name instead I want to write event = Event.from_id(id) event.name Am I doing something wrong here.. thanks in advance cheers sameera

    Hello, When you issue the command ls in Linux you get this sort of thing: drwxr--r-- 1 fred editors 4096 drafts -rw-r--r-- 1 fred editors 30405 file1.php -r-xr-xr-x 1 fred fred 8460 file2.php I know that the rwxrwxrwx are the read, write and execute permissions for the current user. And I think I know that 'fred' is the user who owns the file. So I assume fred can write to file1 but no one else can. But what is the extra bit 'editors' and what is the difference between file1 and file2 with respect to one having an ownership of 'fred editors' and the other 'fred fred'? Also if a web user connects to one of the files, what is their user name and where is this decided? If the server decided that user connecting from the web was going to be fred, does this mean any web user could write to file1? Any information welcomed, I am resaerching this but just getting confused. Thanks

    I am testing a java web service(jax-ws),but whenever i am running the test i am getting response code as response message:Read timed out . And at tomcat serevr side i am getting exception : SEVERE: caught throwable ClientAbortException: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset by peer: socket write error at org.apache.catalina.connector.OutputBuffer.realWriteBytes(OutputBuffer.java:358) at org.apache.tomcat.util.buf.ByteChunk.append(ByteChunk.java:354) at org.apache.catalina.connector.OutputBuffer.writeBytes(OutputBuffer.java:381) at org.apache.catalina.connector.OutputBuffer.write(OutputBuffer.java:370) at org.apache.catalina.connector.CoyoteOutputStream.write(CoyoteOutputStream.java:89) I found out that Read timed out exception may occur because of big size of SOAP response. But i am clue less because same web service i can access form an application.
