• Jquery Slide to position on click

  Here's a scenario... I have a column. In the column i have multiple divs with text inside each one. A bit like a list of categories. Which ever one is SELECTED gains a different background colour. What i would like to be able to do is use jquery so that when a different div is clicked on the background colour appears to slide behind the rest of the items until it reaches the one you selected. Does anyone have any idea if this can be done? And if so any idea on Markup? Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Unit of measurement API in Java?

  JSR-275 has been rejected, the Units of Measurement API for Java project is a set of interfaces, but haven't found an open source implementation. On this post: Which jsr-275 units implementation should be used? the project owner mentions the implementation was going to be ready by the end of last year on JScience, but didn't find anything there to convert between weight or length units and when I looked for JScience on https://maven.java.net/, I found it, but the JAR wasn't even in the directory https://maven.java.net/content/repositories/snapshots/org/jscience/jscience/5.0-SNAPSHOT/, so I had to get it from somewhere else. Has this project been left behind? And is there currently an implementation for conversion of Units of measurement in Java and even perhaps a Maven repo?

• .net 4 Chart Control - Hide labels in pie chart

  Hello all. Am I going mad/blind? Probably a combination of the two. How does one go about removing the data labels from a pie chart with the new chart control in .net 4? I can get these to display as tooltips absolutely fine, but ultiamtely I'd like the labels not to be present as it looks rather busy. I've searched previous answers and seen code behind resolutions but surely there must be some sort of code infront option to turn these labels off? Apologies for being thick/blind.

• Is the javaScript not part of the DOM?

  Why is it that scripts can still function even after the code used to create them is removed from the DOM? I ran into a situation where I wanted to prevent a broken script from running (@see my post). In my attempt to come up with a solution I wrote an extension with the following line (just to see what would happen). //doc is passed here because this script is running as a firefox extension outside //of the document context. $('script', doc).remove(); I assumed that this would remove all the scripts from the DOM, which it did, and that therefore no scripts would run on the page, which is not the case. I would love to know more about what's behind this behavior.

• Auto Increment feature of SQL Server

  I have created a table named as ABC. It has three columns which are as follows:- The column number_pk (int) is the primary key of my table in which I have made the auto increment feature on for that column. Now I have deleted two rows from that table say Number_pk= 5 and Number_pk =6. The table which I get now is like this:- Now if I again enter two new rows in this table with the same value I get the two new Number_pk starting from 7 and 8 i.e, My question is that what is the logic behind this since I have deleted the two rows from the table. I know that a simple answer is because I have set the auto increment on for the primary key of my table. But I want to know is there any way that I can insert the two new entries starting from the last Number_pk without changing the design of my table? And how the SQL Server manage this record since I have deleted the rows from the database??

• How difficult is it to migrate away from Google App Engine?

  I am thinking of making an (initially) small Web Application, which would eventually have a potential to grow. All things considered Google App Engine seems like a very attractive option. Say, user base and complexity grows and for one or other reason I needed to leave GAE behind. How difficult would it be to migrate away? 1) Does GAE provide a way to export the database? What format would it be? Would it be difficult to put it under MySQL (or similar)? 2) In which areas (ex. database access, others?) would I have to use GAE API? I.e. which parts of implementation would have to be abstracted away / interfaced? 3) Alternatively, is it even worth to keep GAE API outside, say, if there is nothing much I would need to use.

Suppose you have an arbitrary JSON structure like the following: { 'str_title':'My Employee List' ,'str_lastmod': '2009-June-15' ,'arr_list':[ {'firstname':'john','lastname':'doe','age':'33',} ,{'firstname':'jane','lastname':'doe','age':'34',} ,{'firstname':'samuel','lastname':'doe','age':'35',} ] } Question: Is there a web-based JSON editor that could take a structure like this, and automatically allow the user to modify this in a user-friendly GUI? Example: Imagine an auto-generated HTML form that displays 2 input-type-text controls for both title and lastmod, and a table of input-type-text controls with three columns and three rows for arr_list ... with the ability to delete or add additional rows by clicking on a [+][X] next to each row in the table. Big Idea: The "big idea" behind this is that the user would be able to specify any arbitrary (non-recursive) JSON structure and then also be able to edit the structure with a GUI-based interaction (this would be similar to the "XML Editor Grid View" in XML Spy).

• DirectX 9 HLSL vs. DirectX 10 HLSL: syntax the same?

  For the past month or so, I have been busting my behind trying to learn DirectX. So I've been mixing back back and forth between DirectX 9 and 10. One of the major changes I've seen in the two is how to process vectors in the graphics card. One of the drastic changes I notice is how you get the GPU to recognize your structs. In DirectX 9, you define the Flexible Vertex Formats. Your typical set up would be like this: #define CUSTOMFVF (D3DFVF_XYZRHW | D3DFVF_DIFFUSE) In DirectX 10, I believe the equivalent is the input vertex description: D3D10_INPUT_ELEMENT_DESC layout[] = { {"POSITION",0,DXGI_FORMAT_R32G32B32_FLOAT, 0 , 0, D3D10_INPUT_PER_VERTEX_DATA, 0}, {"COLOR",0,DXGI_FORMAT_R32G32B32A32_FLOAT, 0 , 12, D3D10_INPUT_PER_VERTEX_DATA, 0} }; I notice in DirectX 10 that it is more descriptive. Besides this, what are some of the drastic changes made, and is the HLSL syntax the same for both?

• Java variables -> replace? RAM optimization

  Hi guys, I just wanted to know what happens behind my program when I declare and initialize a variable and later initialize it again with other values, e.g. an ArrayList or something similar. What happens in my RAM, when I say e.g. this: ArrayList<String> al = new ArrayList<String>(); ...add values, work with it and so on.... al = new ArrayList<String>(); So is my first ArrayList held in RAM or will the second ArrayList be stored on the same position where the first one has been before? Or will it just change the reference of "al"? If it is not replaced...is there a way to manually free the RAM which was occupied by the first arraylist? (without waiting for the garbage collector) Would it help to set it first =null? Nice greetings, poeschlorn

• VS2010's "Public Property <PropertyName> As <DataType> vs. Public var

  In VS2008, I used to type Public Property <PropName> As <dataType> and hit the Enter key and the IDE editor would automatically expand it out to a full blown property block. Now, from what I understand, a new feature of 2010 is that the compiler automatically "expands" the short syntax above into the same IL code that you would get with the full property GET AND SET sub methods that were are accustomed to seeing before in the editor. But functionality, how the heck is this any different than just having a Public class level variable? If the only diff is what it compiles to and if otehrwise there is no functional difference, isn't the new way less efficient than the old since it involves more code than just having a class level memory variable? Public as I thought that if you weren't going to have code behind your properties that they were essentially the same. I guess the diffrenece is that they just added the keyword "Property" but functionality, their is no diff, eh?

• Shopping Cart Database Structure

  Hi, I have been studying the database structure for shopping carts and notice that when storing order details the product information is repeated and stored again in the table. I was wondering what the reasoning behind this would be? Here is a small example of what i mean: Product Table product_id name desc price 1 product 1 This is product 1 27.00 Order Table order_id customer id order_total 1 3 34.99 Order Details Table order_details_id product_id product name price qty 1 1 product 1 27.00 1 So as you can see the product name and price are stored again in the order details table. Why is this? The only reason i can think of is because the product details may change after the order has been placed which may cause confusion. Is this correct? Thanks Paul

• Importing a spreadsheet into an asp.net program and listing the worksheets

  I have to import the contents of a spreadsheet in my asp.net project. The code behind is c#. I figured out how to locate the spreadsheet on the user's computer and how to import the data from a given worksheet into a datable. The problem is I may not know the name of the worksheet ahead of time. I want to present the user with a list of available worksheets and have them pick one. That is the piece I don't know how to do. • Is there a way to put Setter elements inside EventTrigger?

  Working on a WPF application, I started working on a custom ControlTemplate. I reached the point where I need to change some control properties when an event occurs. For this purpose, there are Setter elements. Seems all good, but I cannot use them inside EventTrigger elements. For example, if a simple Trigger, that can be bound to control properties, is used then Setter elements can be used inside. However, I do not want to bind to a property change but rather to an event. Is there a way to do this in pure XAML or will I have to work in the code-behind?

• Binding command to button in silverlight 4 using mvvm

  Hello, I have a user control called HomePage.xaml. I'm creating a model instance (using MVVM pattern) in the code behind file in the constructor of page as MainViewModel model = new MainViewModel(); I have a button in HomePage.xaml which I want to bind to the command inside MainViewModel called GetData() and want to populate the data in datagrid. MainViewModel has an ObservableCollection which I would use to bind the data in datagrid. Populating the data in datagrid without binding command works fine. I'm binding the button as: <StackPanel x:Name="stkPanelInput" Orientation="Horizontal" VerticalAlignment="Center" HorizontalAlignment="Center"> <Button x:Name="buttonGetData" Width="70" Content="GetData" Command="{Binding GetData}" Click="buttonGetData_Click"/> </StackPanel> How shall I bind the command using MVVM? • Onclick not firing

  I have a set of buttons on my master page (I have attached the code below) but no onclick event is being raised. I pulled the final page source and no onclick event was present. As you can see I tried a few different approaches to solve the problem. I am looking for a normal postback to the server but I am getting nothing when I click any of these buttons. I might add that I'm C#/.NET savvy, but not in the context of web development.   I'd like to make my app to open a specified PDF by an external app of the user's choice on the iPad. How can I do that? Or, is there any open-source PDF reader framework available so that I can put it into my app? My situation in more detail: I'm thinking of porting to the iPad from OS X / rewriting from scratch for the iPad an app which manages lots of PDFs (journal articles, etc.), but I don't want to write the PDF reader part, because there are many good ones already out there; I don't want to reinvent the wheels. (You might say you shouldn't reinvent pdf management apps, but I'd like to make one as a front end to SPIRES, and there isn't one so far.) As the app would be a front end to a serious reading activity, UIWebView's pdf capability is not enough. Also, users of my app would have various preferences which app to use. • focus on page scroll navigation when using iPad

  I've used Page Scroller Lite http://pagescroller.com to set up a single-page site at http://www.thestitchshop.co.uk There seems to be an issue that scolling works only once when clicking on a menu item. It will only work again after one touched scrolls the page 'manually' by sliding the finger across the page. Apparently, the issue is that the content gets the focus after the scroll and tapping on navigation then actually taps behind it. I've tried contacting the author of pagecroller, but no luck. So, how do I fix it? I don't have any JS knowledge, so I need a little more help along the way. Many thanks. • How to use a different assembly name for different configurations?

  In Visual Studio 2008 (and others) when creating a .NET or silverlight application if you look at your project properties, it seems like you can only have one assembly name - across all configurations. I would like to compile my application as: MyAppDebug - in debug mode and just MyApp - in release mode Does anyone know if this is possible? Edit: It seems some people are questioning the reasoning behind the question, so I'll explain a little further: I'm working on a Silverlight application which gets automatically uploaded to our test site when I to a "build solution". The trouble is, the test team are now testing the online version, whilst I work on a new one. So, I want to have a url like .\MyApp.html for the regular version that the QA team will test and then .\MyApp.html?version=debug for the current version that I'm working on.

• cheap way to scale a rails application

  I have an application, that is becoming big, but until now, its not giving me a good revenue. That means, short money to re-invest on that. In this scenario, i found a way to make a "cheap distributed rails" deployment. I've got 4 VPS. All of them are in the same physical server. I added a load balance server running HAproxy in one dedicated VPS. There i pointed my virtual ip address where my domain name is associated. Behind this HAproxy i have more two VPS running my rails APP, passenger and memcache. Both apps servers are looking to the same database server, my 4th VPS. So with $44/month, i mounted a distributed environment. It won't be my final choice, but now, that the budget is short, is that a good way to deploy a rails application? Any pros or cons? It worth my $44/month?

Over a period of nearly 9 years i've studied most mainstream languages (especially C based ones), used lots of different OSes, read and absorbed many books and even written one myself. But i still feel i'm usless! Do professional developers ever get to the stage where they feel confident that they know what they are doing and are confident when submitting solutions/code? When do you know you're good enough?

• MouseLeftButtonDown not recognized by a ListBox ??

  Hello everybody, I'm encountering a huge problem, I have tried everything I could, but I didn't find any solution. I have a listBox, with a DataTemplate. I want to use the events MouseLeftButtonDown and MouseLeftButtonUp to check the item selected is the same the user clicked on. The problem is the event MouseLeftButtonUp is recognized but not the event MouseLeftButtonDown.
