Why can I not view foreign language characters in my mysql DB?

I am inserting the following characters into my DB: ?? / ?? This is the meta tag on the page that is inserting the characters: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> I have altered all the columns in my table that is holding the characters to be utf8_unicode_ci The foreign characters show up like so in the DB: æ±‰å— / æ¼¢å— When I use a sql statement to display those foreign characters on a page, they display correctly again as: ?? / ?? I am guessing I have some setting that is not correct in my DB, since it stores it correctly, but does not display it correctly. What can i do to make the foreign language characters to display correctly in my DB?

Manipulating pixels using only toDataURL

The problem I have is this: I need to be able to dynamically tint an image using Javascript, but I cannot access pixel data via the canvas. I can, however, store the dataURL (or any other text-based data format) and include that with the code, manipulate that data, and then create an image object using that dataURL. My question is, how can I access the RGBA value of each pixel, given only the dataURL. I assume I need to decode the base64 url, but into what format in order to manipulate on the pixel level? And then would be it be as trivial as re-encoding it as base64, slapping it in a url, and the passing to an image? Thanks.

Hey, I'm using php 5 and need to communicate with another server that runs completely in unicode. I need to convert every string to unicode before sending it over. This seems like an easy task, but I haven't been able to find a way to do it yet. Is there a simple function that returns a unicode string? i.e. convert_to_unicode("the string i'm sending")

mysql innodb max size of transaction

Using mysql 5.1.41 and innodb I'm doing some data import, but can't use load data infile, so I'm manually issuing insert statements. I found that it's much faster to disable auto commit and issue say, 100 insert statements and then commit, instead of the implicit commit after each insert. It got me thinking, what limits are there to how much data I can put into a transaction? Is there a limit on the number of statements, or does it have to do with the size in bytes etc...?

I have DotNetOpenAuth running on a background thread making calls to Google authorized with OAuth on a regular basis. jQuery code working in Safari and Chrome but not Firefox

I'm got a site that has a long list of tweets, and as you scroll down the right column follows you down, showing stats on the tweets. (See it in action at http://www.grapevinegame.com . Click 'memorise', then 'skip' to get to the list page. Works in Safari and Chrome). I'm using jQuery to update the top-margin of the right column, increasing it as I scroll down. It seems to be working fine in webkit-based browsers, but doesn't budge in Firefox. Wrapping with Dependency Properties

I've got a Windows Forms control that I'm wrapping with a WindowsFormsHost-derived class to access WPF's data binding functionality. The Forms control exposes properties that indicate its state, along with the standard property-changed event notifier. For example, a Zoom property on the Forms control is accompanied with a ZoomChanged event. In the WindowsFormsHost wrapper, I'm using a DependencyProperty to represent the underlying Windows Forms control property. Binding works as expected going to the control; however, I'm not sure how to correctly propogate property changes from the wrapped control back out to binding subscribers (i.e., the Windows Form control changes its Zoom property and raises the ZoomChanged event). Any ideas on how to accomplish this? Should I be using a different approach?

I have two objects that have a ManyToMany relationship with one another through a mapping table. Though, when I try to save it, I get a stack overflow exception. I'm trying to simply send an email using my google apps account with php. I am able to send an email in a .net application using the port 587 host smtp.googlemail.com and SSL enabled. How to lazy load scripts in YUI that accompany ajax html fragments

I have a web app with Tabs for Messages and Contacts (think gmail). Each Tab has a Y.on('click') event listener that retrieves an HTML fragment via Y.io() and renders the fragment via node.setContent(). However, the Contact Tab also requires contact.js to enable an Edit button in the fragment. How do I defer the cost of loading contact.js until the user clicks on the Contacts tab? How should contact.js add it's listener to the Edit button? The Complete function of my Tab's on('click') event could serialize Get.script('contact.js') after Y.io('fragment'). However, for better performance, I would prefer to download the script in parallel to downloading the HTML fragment. In that case, I would need to defer adding an event listener to the Edit button until the Edit button is available. This seems like a common RIA design pattern. What is the best way to implement this with YUI? How should I get the script? How should I defer sections of the script until elements in the fragment are available in the DOM?

Entity Framework vs LINQ to SQL

Now that .NET v3.5 SP1 has been released (along with VS2008 SP1), we now have access to the .NET entity framework. My question is this. When trying to decide between using the Entity Framework and LINQ to SQL as an ORM, what's the difference? The way I understand it, the Entity Framework (when used with LINQ to Entities) is a 'big brother' to LINQ to SQL? If this is the case - what advantages does it have? What can it do that LINQ to SQL can't do on its own?

How do you configure an SDL Tridion CME extension for a subset of views?

I have created a new editor for SDL Tridion which adds some new functionality to the ribbon bar. NetworkActivityIndicator not working the same on iPhone and Simulator?

I am using the NetworkActivityIndicator to show that my App is doing some work. When I run the app in the simulator, it shows the way I want - basically spinning the entire time until the selected tab loads the data from the server - but when I put the app onto my phone, I only get a split-second of the spinner before it disappears. Usually only spins right before the view appears on the screen. Ideas?

TransactionScope Prematurely Completed

I have a block of code that runs within a TransactionScope and within this block of code I make several calls to the DB. Selects, Updates, Creates, and Deletes, the whole gamut. When I execute my delete I execute it using an extension method of the SqlCommand that will automatically resubmit the query if it deadlocks as this query could potentially hit a deadlock. I believe the problem occurs when a deadlock is hit and the function tries to resubmit the query. This is the error I receive: The transaction associated with the current connection has completed but has not been disposed. The transaction must be disposed before the connection can be used to execute SQL statements. In this instance, I want to update Field2 when Field1 is updated, but don't want to have that change cause another trigger invocation, etc...

Graph visualization code in javascript?

Hi. I have a data structure that represents a directed graph, and I want to render that dynamically on an HTML page. Does anyone know of any javascript code that can do a reasonable job with graph layout? These graphs will usually be just a few nodes, maybe ten at the very upper end, so my guess is that performance isn't going to be a big deal. Ideally, I'd like to be able to hook it in with jQuery so that users can tweak the layout manually by dragging the nodes around. Edit: Google's Visualization API seems to be more "graphs as charts" oriented than "graphs as nodes" oriented. I didn't see any node-oriented visualizations already built there, anyway. Do you know that one exists?

PHP Post Count in Forum

I'm currently desiging a forum application, I considered using a premade but decided against it as it's useful for me to learn some of the techniques. So I've written a fairly full featured forum... great. One of the problems I want to solve is to include user data for each post, at the minute the post table includes the poster ID (obviously) and I added the poster's username at a later date so I didn't have to query the User DB for X number of posts in a thread. However, it's become apparent I now want to do this, usernames don't need to update retrospectively, however avatars, sigs, and especially post counts need to update actively, so data in some form needs keeping up to date somewhere... What would be a good way of implementing this? I obviously don't want to include any more user data on the Posts DB table than necessary, but I'm struggling to find an easy way to do this short of querying the DB for each post in a thread, which is potentially going to create a lot of traffic. How have other people solved this, I've been examining the code on some other open source apps but I can't find what I'm looking for. Is it possible to select multiple records in one query? In which case I could build an array dynamically on each page request (eg 'SQL blah blah' then a for each loop to insert the ID's). Could I join the tables each time? Do I submit a query for each post? Hmm.

basic boost date_time input format question

I've got a pointer to a string, (char *) as input. The date/time looks like this: Sat, 10 Apr 2010 19:30:00 I'm only interested in the date, not the time. I created an "input_facet" with the format I want: boost::date_time::date_input_facet inFmt("%a %d %b %Y"); but I'm not sure what to do with it. Ultimately I'd like to create a date object from the string. I'm pretty sure I'm on the right track with that input facet and format, but I have no idea how to use it. Thanks.
