  Adventures with JavaScript rendered in IE 8, Chrome 15, and Firefox 8.0 I have written a little monogram about the advantages of Math and wrote a few JavaScript applications to demonstrate them. I was a bit careless and used elements on the page in my JavaScript without using any of the GetElementsByXXXX methods to identify them.  Say I had a text box named tbSeqNum into which I entered a number to be used in a computation. In my code I simply referred to its value by using it directly. Like here: Function Blah() {                 return tbSeqNum.value; } This ran fine in IE8. In IE, the elements are available as global variables. This is not the case in either Firefox or Chrome. In there one has to create the variable and only then use it. Assuming I also used tbSeqNum as the element’s ID, this works: Function Blah() {                 return GetElementById(“tbSeqNum”).value; } Naturally this corrected function also works in IE, so be warned. Also, coming from windows programming (I am long in the tooth and programmed long before the internet), I have a habit of putting an “Exit” button on my pages and setting their onclick to: onclick=”window.close()”. Again, this works fine in IE. In Firefox and chrome, it does not! There you can only close a window that you opened in the code. A window that was opened by navigation to a URL will not close.  Before I deployed mu code to my website, I painfully removed all my Exit buttons. But my greatest surprise came when I tested my pages in the various browsers. In my code I do a comparison on the performance of two algorithms used to solve the same problem. One is brute force, the other uses a mathematical formula. The compare functions runs each many times and displays the time it took for each and also the ratio. Chrome runs JavaScript between 5 and 10 times faster than Firefox and between 50 and 100 times faster that IE. Wow!!! This difference is especially remarkable when the code uses iteration. I suspect that the JS engines in Chrome and Firefox simply cache the result of a function and if it is called again with the same parameters, it returns the cached result.   I recently decided to switch from Eclipse to Android Studio. I imported a project I was working on and am now getting this error when I try to run the project.   Hello, so far I've been using ASP.Net 3 BETA. Everything was working fine till the update to RC2 version. Of course I've read ScottGu's article about RC2. My problem is following. Basically I have 2 controllers: public class DynamicPageController : Controller { public ActionResult Redirect(string resource, int? pageNumber, int? id) { } } public class SystemController : Controller { public ActionResult Index() { } } In the Globals.asax I have routes like this: public static void RegisterRoutes(RouteCollection routes) { routes.MapRoute( "SystemRoute", "System/{action}", new { controller = "System", action = "Index" } ); routes.MapRoute( "PageRoute", "{resource}/{id}/{pageNumber}", new { controller = "DynamicPage", action = "Redirect", resource = UrlParameter.Optional, pageNumber = UrlParameter.Optional, id = UrlParameter.Optional } ); } In the code, I have simple link creation: System.Web.Mvc.UrlHelper u = new System.Web.Mvc.UrlHelper(context); string url = u.Action("Index", "System"); and the url is "/my_app/System" in both versions (BETA and RC2) But the code below (the syntax is the same as above, only controller and action names are different): string url = u.Action("Redirect", "DynamicPage", new RouteValueDictionary(new { resource = "Home" })); gives url which is null in RC2. It should be (and in fact in BETA was) "/my_app/Home" Why ? Is it a bug ? How can I create url for my "DynamicPage" controller ? Regards BTW: From where can I now download ASP.Mvc BETA version along with ASP.Net Web Pages 1.0 installers ? Since RC2 announcement I have problems finding mentioned 2 installers. Normally I would upgrade my code but this issue described above makes me stay with BETA for a while, since I have no time for migration and testing everything now.

• Test iPhone in-app purchases on a different bundle?

  We have a group of beta testers for iPhone app. Recently, we added in-app purchases to the app. Before this, we would send out ad hoc builds to beta testers using a separate bundle ID and name so that they could have the store build and the ad hoc build on their phones. However, it seems like we have to build the ad hoc copy with the same Bundle ID to test in-app purchases, and this means we can't send out a seperate beta copy - our beta file (annoyingly) overwrites the user's store-bought app. Is there any way to test in-app purchases in a different bundle ID? Do I need to set up fake, test in-app purchases for the test build too?

• Xcode "Build and Archive" from command line

  Xcode 3.2 provides an awesome new feature under the Build menu, "Build and Archive" which generates an .ipa file suitable for Ad Hoc distribution. You can also open the Organizer, go to "Archived Applications," and "Submit Application to iTunesConnect." Is there a way to use "Build and Archive" from the command line (as part of a build script)? I'd assume that xcodebuild would be involved somehow, but the man page doesn't seem to say anything about this. UPDATE Michael Grinich requested clarification; here's what exactly you can't do with command-line builds, features you can ONLY do with Xcode's Organizer after you "Build and Archive." You can click "Share Application..." to share your IPA with beta testers. As Guillaume points out below, due to some Xcode magic, this IPA file does not require a separately distributed .mobileprovision file that beta testers need to install; that's magical. No command-line script can do it. For example, Arrix's script (submitted May 1) does not meet that requirement. More importantly, after you've beta tested a build, you can click "Submit Application to iTunes Connect" to submit that EXACT same build to Apple, the very binary you tested, without rebuilding it. That's impossible from the command line, because signing the app is part of the build process; you can sign bits for Ad Hoc beta testing OR you can sign them for submission to the App Store, but not both. No IPA built on the command-line can be beta tested on phones and then submitted directly to Apple. I'd love for someone to come along and prove me wrong: both of these features work great in the Xcode GUI and cannot be replicated from the command line.

Isn't it reasonable to write your own simple http response parser or take small existing library like google-spreadsheet-lib-android ? Thanks! An Adder is a member of another class representing the physical object actually doing the calculus , which calls adder.calc() with its parameters (merely a list of objects to do the maths on). To do these maths, I need some parameters, which do not exist outside of the class (but can be set, see below). They're neither config parameters nor members of other classes. These parameters are D1 and D2, distances, and three arrays of fixed size : alpha, beta, delta. I thought of putting them in static const, but I don't think that's the proper way of solving such problems.
