• Creating practically solvable 15 puzzle inputs

  I am now developing a 15 puzzle game. I know the method to detect unsolvable puzzles. But unlike 8-puzzle, solution for 15-puzzle takes quite long time for some input states and can be solved within 5 seconds some other set of input states. Now the problem is that I cannot give the user(the player), a problem for which the solution takes more than 10 seconds(if he/she chooses to see the solution). So what I want is that when I initially shuffle the puzzle, I want to only present those puzzles which can be solved within 10 seconds. There must be some way to determine the hardness of the puzzle. I tried searching the net but could not find it. Does anyone know a way of determining the hardness of a puzzle? NOTE : I am using A* algorithm to find out the solution on a computer with 3GB RAM and 2.27GHZ processor.

• My ubuntu partition was deleted and I can't boot from either a DVD or USB

  It's my first time installing ubuntu. I have Windows 7 and 8 before in my laptop (Acer Aspire 4752z). After Ubuntu (12.04) installed in my laptop, the Windows boot loader didn't recognize my Ubuntu so I updated grub from a live USB. And after grub updated, Ubuntu was booting perfectly but my Windows wasn't listed in the grub menu. So I follow someone instruction to update grub again. And after reboot, the grub menu didn't show anymore. After searching about this problem on the net and trying to update grub again and again, I decided to delete the Ubuntu partition from live USB. And shortly after, I booted to Windows with Hiren boot and I used mbrfix. But i think it failed. Now i cant show my BIOS setup or boot from DVD or USB. After that, the only screen i can see after booting is: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue>

• Looking for information on Scholastic BASIC programming books from the mid-1980s

  My very first introduction to programming was in grade school, when I would purchase books full of BASIC code listings from the Scholastic school catalogue. Lately I have been searching teh Internetz for information on these books, but without any success. Does anyone know or remember anything about these books? All I can recall is that they were large paperbacks full of various BASIC code listings, some of which were game like. They all included instructions on how to modify the code listings for the different systems of the day, and I distinctly remember that they would always ask for a number in order to seed the RANDOMIZE command (since I figured out on my own that RANDOMIZE TIMER eliminated the need for the question and answer).

  While writing a Perl statement like if ( $foo >= X && $foo <= Y ) yet again, I wondered why many programming languages do not support the more comfortable form if ( X <= $foo <= Y ) and what this is called. I came up with "3-legged comparison" but no results when searching for it. By the way there is also the "element-of-set" form if ( $foo in X..Y ) which I only consider more readable when provided via a short keyword. Is there a term for X <= $foo <= Y comparison?   I'm junior student in computer science. After taking half of my major related courses, I found that I don't like this theoretical side of IT. As a result, I decided that I would devote my career to CIS/MIS because it is more interesting. However, some veteran programmers in this forum said that having a strong computer science foundation would help much for CIS. Therefore, I think it's better for me to complete my CS degree then have a Master Degree in MIS than have a minor in MIS. After some internet searching, I found that top universities(in my reach) offering master degree in CIS/MIS are all business schools, is there any obstacle for a CS student who lacks of business knowledge like me if I study in these schools? • Switch from encrypted partition to unencrypted (Error: cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available)

  I initially installed Ubuntu 11.04 with an encrypted file system (from the alternate install CD: Guided Partitioning, LVM encrypted). Now I wanted to change this setup to have my root file system on an unencrypted partition. I had the following setup before: /dev/mapper/my-root on / type ext4 (rw,noatime,errors=remount-ro,commit=0,commit=0) /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw,noatime) I backed up /, reformatted /dev/sda5 (which had contained the encrypted LVM device) to an ext3 partition, and restored / to that partition. I edited /etc/fstab, removed the line /dev/mapper/my-root / ..., and added the line: /dev/sda5 / ext3 noatime,rw,errors=remount-ro,commit=0 0 1 I edited /etc/crypttab, and commented out the single entry. On reboot, I get the grub screen as usual, but then I get the message cryptsetup:evms_activate is not available, waiting for encrypted source device. I tried reinstalling Grub2 using a LiveCD with the ChRoot method, but that didn't make any difference. Why is Ubuntu still searching for an encrypted device?

• What ever happened to the Google AJAX Search API

  I am looking to query the main Google search however all references including stackoveflow point to the Google AJAX Search API. The odd thing is that it does not seem to exist any more not even a note to say it is depreciated? The old links point to main Google code site. If I look at the list of API's on that site the API it replaced is there Web Search API (Deprecated) which links back to same page but not the Google AJAX Search API. Further Google searching is not being helpful either, many blog posts pointing to the same Google site (http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/) that has no content and redirects to the same place? Just to prove it did exist I have found it on the way back machine however the last snapshot did not show any special unusual message.

  ok, I have my ATI Radeon 2400XT working properly for longtime on ubuntus (8.04 - 12.04) and recently when I was trying to update (it installs kernal 3.2.0-31 during that update) every think related to ATI including property drivers (that can be activated from additional drivers) are vanished so AMD catalyst control center is not working (it says no amd graphics card is installed) and when opening [additional drivers] it loads and then a box is appear saying (Downloading package indexes failed, please check your network status. Most drivers will not be available.) after searching for additional drivers the window appear saying (no property driver are used on this system). I don't know what happened really! I don't know how to fix this problem either. help!!

  I have an all-in-one printer Epson SX130, wich I have just tried to install. I got the printer working with no problem, but I couldn't set the scanner up. I have had another all-in-one printer before (Brother DCP-125C), and had just the same problem, so I decided to try the same trick I used to do then, running the scanning program as super-user: $sudo simple-scan and $ sudo xsane Once again, it worked just fine, and I could use the scanner. Anyhow, this solution is a little annoying, because I also have to change the permissions to the files I get scanning like this. I have been searching the internet for solutions and got to know this must have something to do with user groups permissions, but couldn't find a satisfying solution. Is there anyone with an idea?   I've got a pretty weird scenario that I was wondering someone could help me out with. I recently created a blog site and noticed that search engines have been including the content of my footer in with the description. This presents a problem because my footer is basic a brief legal statement saying that the views are my own and don't represent the company I work for (and yada yada yada). So, basically, I need a way to prevent search engines from indexint that content in my footer or even my footer altogether. I've been looking back through some of my SEO books and searching through forums but this doesn't seem possible. Is it possible to keep search engines from indexing only certain content on a page? If it isn't possible, what alternatives are there to ensure this legal mumbo jumbo doesn't show up in the results?

  I know about the show desktop keybind (default Ctrl+Alt+D), which I use often enough. However, I'm looking for a way to minimize all windows without activating "show desktop". I'm on a default install (i.e Gnome, Metacity & Compiz). I've looked through all the locations to configure keybinds, that I know. I've also looked at the default keybind list in the Ubuntu wiki and in the Compiz wiki. (Not to mention, searching here.) I'm interested in knowing where it is available, if not in Gnome/Metacity/Compiz, or some other way to accomplish this with a keybind.

When creating a large(ish) site, page titles usually reference both the site name and the current page name. However, it seems there are two main conventions: Bob's Awesome Site - Contact Page and Contact Page - Bob's Awesome Site I've looked around, and pages usually use one of the two variants above. • Is it common to prototype in a higher level language?

  I'm currently toying with the idea of embarking on a project that far exceeds my current programming ability in a language I have very little real world experience in (C). Would it be valuable to prototype in a higher level language that I'm more familiar with (like Perl/Python/Ruby/C#) just so I can get the overall design going? Ultimately, the final product is performance sensitive, hence the choice of C, but I'm afraid not knowing C well will make me lose the forest for the trees. While searching for similar questions, I noticed one fellow mention that programmers used to prototype in Prolog, then crank it out in assembler.

• Packages don't show up after adding ppa

  I added ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/firefox-aurora/ubuntu oneiric and ppa:banshee-team/ppa/ubuntu oneiric to my software sources, then did apt-get update. However, after selecting their specific sources from the menu in Software Center, the only packages available are language packs and extensions for Banshee and firefox-aurora. I had already uninstalled Banshee and Firefox. If I try and install Banshee/Aurora with sudo apt-get it will install the old version. Searching for Banshee/Aurora in Software Center only shows the old version. I'm guessing the packages in the PPAs conflict with the packages in the main sources. How do I install the newer versions?

  I added KDE backported packages recently to gain access to a more stable version of KDevelop. However, now, Kontact/Kmail's search doesn't work anymore. Where do I start to find out what's wrong? The problem manifests itself that when in the Inbox folder, I type something in the search bar, no Emails will be shown. (Yes, searching for something where the email is definitely there.) Kubuntu 12.04 LTS. Kontact version 4.13. What I tried. akonadiconsole as suggested here. But I couldn't find a feeder as mentioned.   I have read so many docs about naming conventions, most recommending both Pascal and Camel naming conventions. Well, I agree to this, its ok. This might not be pleasing to some, but I am just trying to get you opinion why you name you objects and classes in a certain way. What happened to this type of naming conventions, or why are they bad? I want to name a struct, and i prefix it with struct. My reason, so that in IntelliSense, I see all the struct in one place, and anywhere I see the struct prefix, I know it's a struct: structPerson structPosition anothe example is the enum, although I may not prefix it with "enum", but maybe with "enm": enmFruits enmSex again my reason is so that in IntelliSense, I see all my enums in one place. Because, .NET has so many built in data structures, I think this helps me do less searching. Please I used .NET in this example, but I welcome language agnostic answers.

• No boot record when installing 13.04 from USB on WinXP

  I'm replacing WinXP with 13.04 on an older PC using wubi.exe on a USB stick. I had no problem changing the BIOS on another system that was a bit newer but when I change the settings on the older PC to boot from USB, I get a DOS message saying "Searching for boot record...Not found" & asked to try again. I don't have the ability to boot from a live CD so is there a reason why I can boot from a USB on a newer computer but can't from an older one? Both have options to choose to boot from USB, but the older one can find no boot record. The system was built on 12/13/01 by American Megatrends.
