• Relative connection string to AzMan XML store when using security application block

  Is it possible to specify a relative connection string for an AzMan XML store? My current connection string is connectionString="msxml://c:/azman.xml" but I really need to make that relative so other developers and automated builds can get the latest authorization store. MS documentation seems to suggest that connectionString="msxml://azman.xml" should work but that throws a The request is not supported error. EDIT: I realised that the fact I'm using AzMan through the Enterprise Library Security Application Block was important to the question.

• Scheduled task does not run on WIndows 2003 server on VMWare unattened, runs fine otherwise

  Scheduled task does not run on Windows 2003 server on VMWare. The same setup runs fine on standalone server. Test below explains the problem. We really need to run a more complex bat file, but this shows the issue. I have a bat file that copies a file from server A to server B. I use full path name, no drive mapping. Runs fine on server B from command prompt. I created a task that runs this bat file under a domain id with password that is part of administrator group on both servers. Task runs fine from Scheduled task screen, and as a scheduled task as long as somebody is logged into the server. If nobody is logged in, the task does not run. There is no error message in Task Scheduler log, just an entry that the task started, bit no entry for finish or an error code. To add insult to injury, if the task copies a file in the opposite direction, from server B to server A, it runs fine as a scheduled unattended task. If I copy a file from server B to server B, the task also runs fine unattended, I recreated exactly the same setup on a standalone server. No issues at all. I checked obvious things like the task has "run only as logged in" unchecked, domain id has run as a batch job privilege and logon rights, Task Scheduler service runs as a local system, automatic start. Any suggestions?

• How to speed up loading the splash screen.

  I am optimizing the startup of a WinForms app. One issue I identified is the loading of the splash screen form. It takes about half a second to a second. I know that multi-threading is a no-no on UI pieces, however, seeing how the splash screen is a fairly autonomous piece of the application, is it possible to somehow mitigate its performance hit by throwing it one some other thread (perhaps in the way Chrome does it), so that the important pieces of the application can actually get going.

I'm trying to merge trunk change-set into a branch, but have found out a lot of post-merge issues, including whole files that disappeared, and missing code blocks I'm using SVN 1.6 for both clients and server. Tried this with multiple clients - Eclipse, Netbeans and SVN - the result is the same. Can someone advice how sort it out, and most important, prevent code loss? Thanks in advance!

• Why is /usr/bin/env permission denied to rails server?

  I've just set up rails on an apache server running on Ubuntu, and when I try to go to the root page it gives this error: /usr/bin/env: bash: Permission denied env and all the directories in the path all have permissions 755. I tried setting env to have permissions 777 but still got the same error. Rails is running as "nobody". Why is this happening? I don't know what else to try.   Hi, I was looking up how to create a view programmatically and found the following example code: self.view = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 320, 480)]; This works great, except I don't like that it hardcodes the size of the screen. Is there a way to look up the size of the screen? An important point someone brought up is that if the app is running during a phone call then the screen will be slightly smaller because of the green "return to call" bar.

• samba share not on network after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04LTS. [migrated]

  I just upgraded an old Ubuntu box to 12.04LTS (machine named A-Ubuntu). This is an upgrade not a format re-install. All the accounts and config were preserved. The basic setup is a local network with 2 Ubuntu machines (let say A-Ubuntu, B-Ubuntu) and a MAC (C-MAC). Before the upgrade, all of them could see each other by their names not only the IP address. The local network has a D-Link Router where everybody is connected with RJ-45 wired etherenet (not wi-fi). Since the A-Ubuntu upgrade, we can't see this machine name on the Network and its name is not on machine list in the D-Link router anymore. We can see it's IP address only. I can't access A-Ubuntu from the other two by its name but I can ping it with its address (192.168.0.109). From A-Ubuntu, I can connect and see the shared samba folders on B-Ubuntu and C-MAC. But from B-Ubuntu and C-MAc, I can't connect to A-Ubuntu. Correct me if I'm wrong but this tells me that Samba should be fine and the real problem is that A-Ubuntu does not advertise its name on the Network so the D-Link does not have it in its table so nobody else finds it. After a lot of googling, I see that it is the job of avahi and mdns to do so. Those packages are running, I checked multiple config files for samba, avahi, mdns to see as if it is like the examples on the WEB and also similar to what I find on the working B-Ubuntu machine. This is the same. I did multiple service restart with samba, avahi, remove the firewall to make sure it does not block the hostname broadcast. I rebooted multiple time to make sure the update I was making were effective. Still, Can't see the A-Ubuntu name on the network. Any idea what it can be?, Where to look next?

• How can I disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key combination completely on XP/Vista/7?

  I have been googling extensively to figure this out, and nobody seems to be able to give a direct answer. Let me start by saying that I'm NOT talking about requiring CTRL-ALT-DEL to enter logon information. I'm working on a golf simulator program which is used at golf centers. I need the ability to completely disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key sequence so that the golf center customers can't get out of the program and access the computer at all. I realize there are other key combinations that need to be handled as well, we already have this entire feature working in XP, but we're going to be switching to Windows 7 soon, and CTRL-ALT-DEL is the only one that doesn't seem to work in Win7. I'd really like an all-around solution if at all possible. This same program may also be installed on a client's personal computer for an in-home golf simulator, but the computers that really need this feature (golf center computers) are provided to the golf center by us, so would the best option be to write a new shell? I don't know anything about that at all, other than others that suggest writing a new shell for kiosk mode. I'd really like a simpler option, like modifying the registry in some way. I have heard that you can remove some buttons from the menu screen that pops up, but unless I can remove pretty much all of them (including the shutdown/restart button in the bottom-right corner), this won't be enough of a solution for me. One use case in the WinForms app allows users to drag TIFF images (of faxes) from Outlook directly onto an "attach an image or fax to this case" control in the WinForms app. Is there a Silverlight 4 control which allows for the same functionality? It's important to realize that saving the file to the local filesystem and then selecting and uploading the file with a standard upload control will not meet the business requirements as outlined in the project.

• What are some alternatives to word processing with Markdown?

  I've used MS Word-style editors for a long time, but I never got used to how unintuitive and cumbersome they are. I'm not talking specifically about MS Word, but also other editors that seem to mimic Word, like OpenOffice, NeoOffice, etc. I've found myself preferring to write in Markdown (much like on this site). I've found a few good Markdown editors, and I like using them a lot more than using Word-style editors. Here is what they generally look like: As you can see, it works much differently than a Word-style editor. This is a generally cleaner way of writing, since formatting is done right in the text, and is extremely simple to use (no highlighting some text, then clicking a button in some menu you have to find). Although editing text this way is great, I've realized that the syntax can only be used for very specific needs (bullets, numbered lists, headings and sub-headings, bold, italic, and some other common ones). However, many features are missing. Here are some features that would be nice in a word processor: Tables. Indenting paragraphs. Good image support (you can link to images, but not add them, since Markdown is just text). More simple to use than Word and its cronies. Cross-platform. Some of these can be fixed with in-line HTML, but nobody wants to do that. It seems Markdown was designed for editing text on the internet. Is there a similar setup that works better for desktop word processors?

All three have full control of everything. Nobody has any Deny bits set. I am a member of Administrators. So I don't believe it's a permissions issue. It's not a USB drive, so this time there is no question of USB hardware. Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2. What does this mean? Is this more likely a hardware or software problem?

The directive auth-user-pass-verify /etc/openvpn/auth.pl via-env points to a script which is executed to perform the authentication. A false authentication should result in a exit 1 while a true one should result with exit 0. For testing, that script auth.pl returns exit 0 no matter what the input is but it seems that the file is not executed before the error raises. auth.pl file contents: #!/usr/bin/perl my $user = $ENV{username}; my $passwd = $ENV{password}; printf("$user : $passwd\n"); exit 0; Any ideas?

It would be also nice if the same function could either receive "2010-10-18 10:06" or "2010-10-18" only and return as mentioned above, or different formats besides "2010/10/18" like 18-10-2010" or and 18th of October 2010, giving the option but not that important, just curious about jQuery power dealing with dates. • Dual pane file manager for Mac OS

  Is there a good customizable dual-pane file manager for Mac like Total Commander / Far Manager in Windows, or like Krusader / Midnight Commander in Linux? I used to work on Windows for quite a while and mostly used Far Manager and sometimes Total Commander, then I switched to Ubuntu Linux and used Krusader, now I switched to Mac OS (Snow Leopard) and I'm having a hard time trying to find a good file manager... Many of the existing applications are trying to replace the Finder with "multimedia capabilities nobody cares about in file manager - IMHO" (Path Finder, ForkLift), some of them are almost good dual-pane file managers (couldn't remember examples), but none of them worked for me mostly because of one reason: I couldn't integrate my file/folder comparison utility (Araxis Merge for Mac) with them... The way it worked for me in Windows and Linux is that I was setting the cursor on one file in the left pane, then setting the right-pane cursor on another file in right pane, then I pressed a hotkey that launched Araxis Merge with those to files/folders comparison results. It was very easy to set up in Far Manager (Windows) and Krusader (Linux, actually in Linux I used "Meld" instead of Araxis Merge...) The tool I'm looking for doesn't necessarily has to be free... Thank you!
