• Database Table design for Weekdays and Values

  Guys, I would love to here your ideas on this. I am creating a table which will store weekly shift hours for employees. for example: Jon works 9:00am tp 9:00pm Monday , 10:00 AM to 5:00PM on Tuseday etc.... How should i go on designing this table. I thought of 2 options. (1) For every record I can have two lines for AM and PM and have columns for Monday to Sunday ID | ParentID | Type | Monday | Tuseday ......Sunday 1 | 1 | AM | 9:00 | 9:00 12:00 2 | 1 | PM | 9:00 | 5:00 02:00 3 | 2 | AM | 10:00 | 4 | 2 | PM | 10:00 | (2) I can save Preference in XML format in one column ID | Info 1 | |Hours|Monday|9:00 AM - 9:00PM|Monday|Tuseday........|Hours Any better ideas ? • VirtualBox how to merge arbitrary snapshot into base vdi

  I botched a transfer of a VM from one harddisk to the other. Now I'm left with the base vdi and a whole bunch of snapshots. My steps Copied old VM directory over to new HDD Deleted old VM and added new VM using using Machine-add and providing the old XML file Couldn't add base vdi file due to conflict so changed the UUID of base vdi with VBOXMANGE.EXE internalcommands sethduuid Attempt to rollback to a snapshot, but it seems the VM is looking for the snapshots on the old HDD (which is formatted and gone) This is the error (networked is the name): Failed to restore the snapshot networked of the virtual machine lfs. Could not open the medium 'H:\vm\ft.vdi'. VD: error VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND opening image file 'H:\vm\ft.vdi' (VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND). Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Medium Interface: IMedium {53f9cc0c-e0fd-40a5-a404-a7a5272082cd} The old HDD was drive H: the new one is drive N: How can I modify the snapshots/VM to look in N:\vm\ft.vdi for the base vdi? I've already set the default settings in VirtualBox in general (default vm/vm snapshot location). Or if not that how can I merge the old snap shot with the base vdi given that the only things that have changed is the base vdi's UUID? Thanks

• Windows 7 hangs with 100% disk activity but only when online

  I have the same problem as seemingly many other people here, and I think we might all be experiencing the same issue: a compatibility issue in Windows 7 between hard drive and network controller or drivers. I've tried firmware updates of my entire board, wiping my drive and reinstalling from scratch. And yet the problem persists, which suggests it is an operating system error, as the hard drive checks out 100% physically. Additionally, the only time it does not occur is when in safe mode WITHOUT networking. With networking, there are spikes in disc access every so often and a huge flow of processes accessing the disc simultaneously that literally "stick" the disc, and physically jolting my computer unsticks it. Again, this has been tested for hours in a professional service environment, and without network access on, things are fine. As soon as there's network access available, the disc access occasionally cranks up to 100% and sticks everything. I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials, but this also happened under Norton, then McAfee. Again, this happened again after a complete wipe, so the likelihood of malware causing it seems low. I don't visit unsecure sites anyway, as far as I know. This, to me, narrows it down to a Windows 7 process that is somehow repeatedly corrupted, perhaps a corrupt .dll or driver, causing a conflict at the operating system level and temporary hard drive failure. I would encourage anyone who knows more about this stuff (which is probably most people!) to take a shot at this one, and I would encourage anyone else with a sticking hard drive in windows 7 64-bit to check on whether it occurs during safe mode without networking.

Sometimes, I end up with a bigger filesize while the image is really just half of what it was. I'm taking care of DPI and PixelFormat. What else am I missing? • Why do I get CA1811 when I call a private method from a public method in C++/CLI?

  I've recently upgraded my project from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2010. By enabling Code Analysis and building on Release, I'm getting warning CA1811: Avoid uncalled private code. I've managed to reduce the code to this: .h file: public ref class Foo { public: virtual System::String^ ToString() override; private: static System::String^ Bar(); }; .cpp file: String^ Foo::ToString() { return Bar(); } String^ Foo::Bar() { return "abc"; } The warning I get: CA1811 : Microsoft.Performance : 'Foo::Bar(void)' appears to have no upstream public or protected callers. It doesn't matter if Bar() is static or not. I've tried to reproduce it in C# but I can't. I can only reproduce it in C++/CLI. Why do I get this warning? Is this a Visual Studio 2010 bug?

• Avoiding dog-piling or thundering herd in a memcached expiration scenario

  I have the result of a query that is very expensive. It is the join of several tables and a map reduce job. This is cached in memcached for 15 minutes. Once the cache expires the queries are obviously run and the cache warmed again. But at the point of expiration the thundering herd problem issue can happen. One way to fix this problem, that I do right now is to run a scheduled task that kicks in the 14th minute. But somehow this looks very sub optimal to me. Another approach I like is nginx’s proxy_cache_use_stale updating; mechanism. The webserver/machine continues to deliver stale cache while a thread kicks in the moment expiration happens and updates the cache. Has someone applied this to memcached scenario though I understand this is a client side strategy? If it benefits, I use Django.

  I have my mind firmly wrapped around relational databases and how to code efficiently against them. Most of my experience is with MySQL and SQL. I like many of the things I'm hearing about document-based databases, especially when someone in a recent podcast mentioned huge performance benefits. So, if I'm going to go down that road, what are some of the mental steps I must take to shift from SQL to NO-SQL? If it makes any difference in your answer, I'm a C# developer primarily (today, anyhow). I'm used to ORM's like EF and Linq to SQL. Before ORMs, I rolled my own objects with generics and datareaders. Maybe that matters, maybe it doesn't. Here are some more specific: How do I need to think about joins? How will I query without a SELECT statement? • problem transferring Win 7 operating system hard drive to be used as external hard drive

  Win 7 Asus MA479 8GB Ram hard drives are 500GB The operating system was a Caviar Green, and I tried to exchange it for a Caviar Blue. The Caviar Blue took the install correctly, but the Green, the prior operating system hard drive, will not allow itself to be used as an external hard drive. I use TrueCrypt and tried to format the Green and it freezes each time at the very end of the encyrption of the partition. I took the Blue out of the system and tried to encrypt it, and same problem. I think there must be something on the hard drive that shows it was a system drive and it causes a conflict. I have tried writing over the system hard drive to fully erase everything but that does not work, it still freezes. The drives will work in a different pc, i.e. other pc where it never was the system drive. The external hard drive is connected esata through Thermaltake. I have used TrueCrypt on various pc's for years including this Win7 with no problem. Thank you.

  As an example, suppose a QR Code data stream contains 55 data words (each one byte in length) and 15 error correction words (again one byte). The data stream begins with a 12 bit header and ends with four 0 bits. So, 12 + 4 bits of header/footer and 15 bytes of error correction, leaves me 53 bytes to hold 53 alphanumeric characters. The 53 bytes of data and 15 bytes of ec are supplied in a string of length 68 (str68). The problem seems simple enough - concatenate 2 bytes of (right-shifted) header data with str68 and then left shift the entire 70 bytes by 4 bits. This is the first time in many years of programming that I have ever needed to do something like this, I am a c and bit shifting noob, so please be gentle... I have done a little investigation and so far have not been able to figure out how to bitshift 70 bytes of data; any help would be greatly appreciated. Larger QR codes can hold 2000 bytes of data...

• What Windows message is fired for mouse-up with modifier keys?

  My WndProc isn't seeing mouse-up notifications when I click with a modifier key (shift or control) pressed. I see them without the modifier key, and I see mouse-down notifications with the modifier keys. I'm using the Windows Forms NativeWindow wrapper to get Windows messages from the WndProc() method. I've tried tracking the notifications I do get, and I the only clue I see is WM_CAPTURECHANGED. I've tried calling SetCapture when I receive the WM_LBUTTONDOWN message, but it doesn't help. Without modifier (skipping paint, timer and NCHITTEST messages): WM_LBUTTONDOWN WM_SETCURSOR WM_MOUSEMOVE WM_SETCURSOR WM_LBUTTONUP With modifier (skipping paint, timer and NCHITTEST messages): WM_KEYDOWN WM_PARENTNOTIFY WM_MOUSEACTIVATE WM_MOUSEACTIVATE WM_SETCURSOR WM_LBUTTONDOWN WM_SETCURSOR (repeats) WM_KEYDOWN (repeats) WM_KEYUP If I hold the mouse button down for a long time, I can usually get a WM_LBUTTONUP notification, but it should be possible to make it more responsive.. • I'm asked to tune a long starting app into a short time period

  Hi, I'm asked to shorten the startup period of a long starting app, however I have also to obligate to my managers to the amount of time i will reduce the startup - something like 10-20 seconds. As i'm new in my company I said I can obligate with timeframe of months (its a big server and I'm new and i plan to do lazy load + performance tuning). that answer was not accepted I was required to do some kind of a cache to hold important data in another server and then when my server starts up it would reach all its data from that cache - I find it a kind of a workaround and i don't really like it. do you like it? what do you think I should do? any suggestions? PS when i profiled the app i saw many small issues that make the startup long (like 2 minutes) it would not be a short process to fix all and to make lazy load. • Excel 2007 - Worksheet is larger than the window

  Hi This is an odd problem but frustrating none the less. I have a worksheet saved which is larger than the Excel 2007 "workarea". This means when I open the worksheet I cannot access the corners of the worksheet to reduce the size and the worksheets title bar area (with move,size,minimise etc) is hidden beneath the ribbon , even if I remove the ribbon , I still can't see the title bar. In Excel 2003 I've had a similar effect but I've always been able to hit the "alt" key to access the "Move" option. However in Excel 2007 , hitting "alt" brings up some shortcuts for the ribbon etc but I can't access the worksheet options. Has anyone else know how to access the worksheet drop down when this happens?

• PHP APC - Why is loading cached array op codes slow?

  I'm using APC to reduce my loading time for my PHP files. My files load very fast, except for one file where I define more than 100 arrays. This 270 kb file takes 200 ms to load. The rest of the files are full of objects, methods, and functions. I'm wondering: does OP code caching not work as well for arrays? My APC cache should be big enough to handle all of my classes. Currently 40% of my cache is free. My hit rate is 99%. apc.shm_size=32 M apc.max_file_size = 1M apc.shm_segments= 1 APC 3.1.6 I'm using PHP 5.2, Apache 2, and Windows Vista.

From the server log it looks like that the rules are running and they select the correct member from the pool after persisting the session (as far as I can tell based on my log messages), but the requests are ultimately directed to somewhere else. I'm wondering if this should be adequate to enable the persistence, or alternatively, do I have to combine the 2 rules and create a persistence profile with them for the virtual server? • How to connect the virtual networks of vmware guests running on different hosts?

  In a test setup, we are running several virtual machines on a single vmware workstation host. All virtual machines are connected via a "host only" network. This runs fine up to 2 or 3 virtual machines (depending on the host hardware). To allow more virtual machines, we want to use more host machines. Details about the environment and applications: Host PCs are running Windows XP in a corporate intranet. VMware used is Workstation 6.5 Guests are running Windows Server 2003 All guests act as Web Servers One of the guests additionally acts as Windows File server, offering shared folders for the other guests to connect to. Restrictions: VMware guests shall not be visible from the intranet. Changes to the host PC are restricted by corporate policy. In the virtual network, no domain controller exists. All virtual machines are member of the same workgroup. Running the virtual network as NAT is possible. Port forwarding might be used if it does not conflict with ports used by the host PC. Looking for a solution, I found hints about using router or vpn software on the hosts, but without any details how to setup. (I found a similar question Sharing the network between 2 VMware hosts, but the answer was not sufficient for me.)

  Hello I have developed a site for a client with a pre-existing BT hosting package. Since going live there has been a problem where $_session loses it's data between pages. I have previously fixed the problem, but somehow it has become unfixed. Last time this problem happened, my research indicated that there is something funny with BT's setup when using sessions, and that article provided this code: if(ini_get('register_globals') == 1) if(is_array($_SESSION)) foreach(array_keys($_SESSION) as $var_to_kill) unset($$var_to_kill); Which even though it looks broken to me, did in fact reduce the problem to a very low level. (i.e one drop out a day). However, today my client is in touch again and surprise surprise, the problem is back. Does anyone know of a solution? • Why would LaTeX ignore the font size in the documentclass

  I have a LaTeX file. I'm experimenting with trying to reduce the font size (this is related to my other question here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2636647/latex-changing-the-font-size-for-a-document-but-in-the-preamble-not-the-docum ). The LaTeX file is generated from another programme. I have edited it to start with \documentclass[4pt,a4paper,english]{report} i.e. I am trying to make the text really small. However it doesn't work. I change that 4pt to anything and the font size is the same. When running pdflatex on it, I get this message printed out. LaTeX Warning: Unused global option(s): [4pt]. That might explain why the error message is What could be going on here? How do I make it use the font size in the documentclass definition?

• How Do I Use Multiple Versions of OpenSSL ... One for Apache and one for PHP

  I have an Apache 2.2 (self-compiled version) server that is getting dinged during a PCI scan because it does not support TLS 1.1 or 1.2 ciphers. After some digging I found that the installed version of OpenSSL (0.9.8e) does not contain the newest TLS ciphers. So I went and downloaded and compiled the latest version of OpenSSL (1.0.1c) and have it installed in an alternate location within /opt so it wouldn't interfere with the installed version. What I would like to do is to compile Apache against the 1.0.1 libraries and keep the system-installed libraries for use with PHP, cURL, openssh, etc. I'm hoping that doing it this way will allow Apache to use the newest TLS but not break anything with any other programs that require the old libraries. I thought I could do this by adding an entry in to /etc/ld.so.conf that pointed to the new libraries, but I think this will conflict with the existing ones. i.e. two references to libcrypto could cause everything to have issues. The main reason for doing this is because of issues with PHP cURLing to external servers and having issues with the latest OpenSSL libs thus requiring edits to our PHP code. Would love some guidance on how best to accomplish this.

  I wondered whether you guys could help me - I have a big problem with overcoming inertia, i.e. how to just get started on a project/work when you simply feel the inertia of not being in the right 'zone' to do work such that it really becomes pretty damn tough to actually get on with what you want to do. Forgive me quoting my blog post where I try to express the problem as best I can:- The problem is that it feels so damned difficult to exert the force required to shift from one mode to another, so much so that you find it almost inconceivable to do so at the time. You need to force yourself somehow, or at least find some sort of hack to trick yourself into it. Do you guys have any ideas/hacks as to how to overcome this?   I am administrating a VPS running cPanel and I'm trying to install postfix. Surely Centos 6.2 could not have shipped with a broken postfix.
