• novice user...firewall

  I've recently ditched windows 7 for Ubuntu 11.10 64bit... I'm a total novice and was wondering do I need to make any changes to the firewall?. I read somewhere that the built in firewall doesn't need touching...but a friend says he uses firestarter,I'd be really grateful if someone could advise me weather to just leave well alone or if I should make certain changes,I'll be doing a lot of web browsing and also proberly a bit of online banking to. Infact this is one of the reasons I've switched to Linux as I was told its much more secure than windows... I just want my comp to be setup in a way that I can access my bank account safely and not knowing what to do about the firewall or how to configure it is off putting... Also do I need an antivirus?..I know bitdefender and eset do a free Linux scanner but again I've heard there not really needed. • Web Development Internship Interview Help

  Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. • How do I run Conkeror in Emacs?

  I have been using emacs for about 3 months, and have been amazed by how much improved my interactions with my computer are. I now use eshell rather than a separate terminal, and the last thing I still need to leave my emacs environment for is for my web browser. I have been reading up on Conkeror, and it seems almost ideal (emacs keybindings, no need to use the mouse etc.) but it runs in a separate window. If it could be run within emacs, it would mean that I would never really have to have interaction with the actual OS, which would be good for someone who is forced to rotate between linux, mac and windows (i.e. me). I understand that it couldn't be run from emacs in -nw mode, but would it be possible (or likely) that Conkeror could be setup to run within an emacs window? Note: - I've tried w3m and didn't really like it

• How to better start learning programming - with imperative or declarative languages?

  Someone is interested in learning to program. What language paradigm should I recomend him - imperative or declarative? And what programming language should he start with? I think that declarative because it is closer to math. And I would say that Prolog might be the best start because it is based on logic and programs are short. On the other hand at school we started learning from imperative languages and I am not sure whether there is a benefit to start with them instead of declarive ones. Thanks. :)

• Do employers hiring for software jobs care about the classes you took in a Computer Science Masters program?

  I'm torn between two classes right now for next semester (Software Design and Advanced Computer Graphics). I would enjoy Advanced Computer Graphics more, but I feel the software design class would help me when approaching anything I ever build for the rest of my career. I feel though I could just buy the book (I already have both books actually) of the Software Design class and go through it, if I wanted. But think it would be a bit tougher to pick up the Advanced Computer Graphics class on my own. So do employers look at the graduate classes you've taken to decide if you would be a good fit or not? I think, more importantly, what I'm wanting to know is if I wanted to work for a high-end software company like Apple or Google would a company like that be more impressed by someone that took software engineering classes or hardcore CS classes?

• Is it illegal to forward copyrighted content? [closed]

  Ok, this may be a strange question, but let's start: If I illegally download a movie (for example...) from a HTTP Web Server, there are many routers between me and the Web Server which are forwarding the data to my PC. As I understand, the owners of the routers are not legally responsible for the data they forward (please correct if I'm wrong). What if I would install a client of a peer-to-peer network on my PC and this client (peer) would forward copyrighted content received from peers to other peers? Hope someone understand what I mean ;-) Any answer or comment would be highly appreciated. Mike Update 1: I'm asking this question because I want to develop a p2p-application and try to figure out how to prevent illegal content sharing/distribution (if forwarding content is really illegal...) Update 2: What if the data forwarded by my peer is encrypted, so I'm technically not able to read and check it?

• Is shared hosting enough for feed reader app?

  I'm developing an Feed reader app. Feeds are downloaded to my server when someone requests it. then they download to user's computer. There will be 1-2 minutes cache for popular feeds. We expect that there will be 1000-5000 users (that use our app) Is a shared hosting (which currently serves almost 100 website, and it will serve 500 websites at maximum) enough for this purpose? or we should look for VPS or Dedicated hosting? Note: Our shared hosting plan has unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth.

• License for library developed with commercial program

  I'm developing a commercial application that largely depends on the functionality of a library that will be developed with it. I'd like to open-source this library, because it offers functionality that is not found elsewhere and can be useful in other applications. However, I will also use it in my own commercial application. I don't want to publish the source of the main application, but it is definitely not a derived work (think of calculator app using GPL licensed library to calculate sine). And if someone else commercially uses the library, I want to require them to publish any changes made. Is the GPL license suitable for this or is LGPL perhaps what I need?

• Wireless connect- Webcam activation- MBR repair/rebuild

  Evening: I've NEVER had so much difficulty with Ubuntu. I got "Ubuntu Made Easy" and couldn't believe it hasn't done a damn thing to help solve the problems!!! #1. Since install of 12.04 I haven't been able to connect to wireless. Have done everything I can find/think of. Laptop indicates it's receiving wireless. Ran all updates, restricted extras, etc. NOTHING!! Tried to find how to activate built-in webcam (it worked when I installed O.S.) NOTHING; tried to find MBR repair/rebuild terminal command.. NOTHING!!! The book has has been useless, so far!! I really have to solve these problems, otherwise laptop and UBUNTU are worthless!!!   I have never used Joomla before, so this might be a noobish question. I have tried searching, but haven't found anything relevant. I'm helping someone update & migrate their old website, built on the Joomla framework. Currently it is running on Joomla 1.5.8 which is an ancient version. I've convinced them to upgrade Joomla to atleast 2.5 I have already taken the database backup. Most links I have seen talk of backing up the entire public_html folder (The website runs on a shared host). But in my fresh Joomla installation there are several folders that are in the public_html folder. So which of the folders in the public_html folder are from the content of the website, and which are of the old Joomla framework? I'm afraid that I might overwrite files of the new Joomla framework with the old framework, if copy all the files and folders into the new installation.

• Why is my content database so large?

  If your SharePoint site collection hasn't grown, but your content database has, the most likely culprit is versioning.  If a list -- or worse, a library -- has versioning enabled, the default is to keep every single one.  That means that every time someone edits and checks in a document, its storage footprint increases by the size of the document (and probably a little more).The solution?  It could be a bit painful, but you'll need to go back into each library and restrict the number of versions to keep (three is sufficient for most uses, but your needs may vary).  I suggest keeping only major versions as well, since minor versions are really just stopping points on the way to a published document.Of course if you have a real business need to keep all those versions around, then you'll want to look into an archiving solution that will take the old versions out of the content database but still make them available if necessary.

The problem i am facing is as in how to modify the boot loader Grub 1.99 in my case, so that i can boot through the new kernel i have compiled. • Box2dWeb positioning relative to HTML5 Canvas

  I'm new with HTML5 canvas and Box2DWeb and I'm trying to make an Asteroids game. So far I think I'm doing okay, but one thing I'm struggling to comprehend is how positioning works in relation to the canvas. I understand that Box2DWeb is only made to deal with physical simulation, but I don't know how to deal with positioning on the canvas. The canvas is 100% viewport and thus can vary size. I want to fill the screen with some asteroids, but if I hardcore certain values such as bodyDef.position.x = Math.random() * 50; the asteroid may appear off canvas for someone with a smaller screen? Can anybody help me understand how I can deal with relative positioning on the canvas?

  I'm trying to learn more about implementing basic SEO strategies and have been spending a lot of time refining my keywords using Google Analytics combined with manually checking them using Google's allintitle operator. However, I'm unclear on whether I should be using quotes with my allintitles. Example: allintitle: seo tips and tricks for beginners 191 results allintitle: "seo tips and tricks for beginners" 70 results My thought is that it would be more accurate to use it without quotes because that way you get a more well rounded idea of all those you are competing with. So, my question is does Google give more weight to exact matches in the title tag or does that not really matter? If someone searched for: seo tips and tricks for beginners, would they be more likely to see the ones that have that exact phrase in their title tag or does that not have any impact?

• Is having your own website important?

  How necessary or important is it? I try to keep a running list of blogs or sites to follow, but a lot of the time I pull up someone's profile and notice there isn't anything there. Is it really important? I understand are different levels of programming (from C/C++ system programmers to Rails and even Haskell and J) and not everyone works in a language easily worked with for web based applications. Not everything is web-centric, however with the advent of many popular and sometimes free services I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a majority of programmers to have a personal site.

• PS2 keyboard scroll wheel doesn't show up on xev, how to make it work?

  I have a ps2 keyboard that has a scroll wheel on the side, it doesn't work on Ubuntu 12.04 so I though to just check xev and map the correct key. But xev doesn't show up anything when moving the scroll wheel. The keyboard is this one (A4Tech KBS-26), it works fine on Windows without adding any extra driver. On linux most buttons work, multimedia, calculator, browser, etc. The only thing that doesn't work is the scroll wheel and copy/paste/cut/undo buttons, and they don't show up on xev either. Does someone knows how to make it work?

• Amazon GameCircle Integration

  I'm trying to integrate Amazon GameCircle and I have been able to successfully initialize GameCircle in my app, but the problem is when I click on the button that displays achievements, the GameCircle achievement list comes up but it says "You have unlocked 0 of 0 achievements". Same happens with leaderboards i.e there are no leaderboards for this app. I have created a Leaderboard and a few achievements on the online developer portal for Amazon but they don't show for some reason. Can someone help me with this. Any links/resources that help with integrating GameCircle will be appreciated. Thanks.

• Migrate from Thunderbird to Mutt

  I am contemplating moving from Thunderbird to Mutt (provided it is feasible) to move to a faster, simpler application. My current Thunderbird set-up consists of multiple IMAP accounts (gmail and google apps). Only selected folders (read labels) in each IMAP account are stored locally. For all other folders, I glance through the headers and open a message only if I find it interesting. I also use folder bookmarks to navigate to folders quickly. I also move messages across folders with keyboard shortcuts. Is it possible to replicate the set-up in Mutt? Can someone share/ point to a sample muttrc file that does the same thing? It would be great if the muttrc file is adequately commented. On a side note, will it also be possible to import my messages from Thunderbird locally? That will save me considerable network traffic (about 2GB data stored locally).

• Reassessment: What's a good analytics package to use for tracking user behavior in a native iOS app?

  Hello. I've been poking around google and SO for answers on this, but it doesn't seem to be very well discussed, so I thought I revisit the question. Is anyone using any analytics packages (like Google Analytics or Mixpanel) to track user behavior in their native iOS apps? The three I've come across are Flurry, Mixpanel, and Google Analytics. It sounds like Apple is still peeved at Flurry, so I don't want to mess with that. Mixpanel looks simple and easy to use, but I'd first like to hear from someone who has used it. Same goes with Google Analytics for the iPhone. I've just finished building an iPhone game and I'd like to begin tweaking it based on how the users are playing it. Does anyone have any recommendations or experience with any of these analytics packages? Thanks so much!

• 301 redirects - can we not delete old pages?

  First time here :) We have a page on the site which ranks well for an SEO term (top 5) but contains old information. We have added a new page but Google doesn't rank it that well. Information on these pages is time sensitive. Old: example.com/2013-related-information.html New: example.com/2014-related-information.html Obvious solution is to delete old page and do a 301 redirect to the new page. Now, can we still keep the old page by giving it a new URL. Step1: example.com/2013-related-information.html is redirect to example.com/2014-related-information.html Step2: example.com/2014-related-information.html is recreated with a new address such as example.com/new-2013-related-information.html What we are trying to do is to send the user to the fresh page but still not wasting the record copy if someone wants to go and dig up old page. • Horizontal title bar shadow while in full screen

  While in full screen the horizontal shadow of the title bar (I am not too sure about its name) appears on top of everything. How can I get rid of it? It's quite distracting while coding in Guake mode and annoying while watching movies. In the picture I've setup Guake with some transparency (that's why you can see things underneath), but the shadow is on the top of everything while I am in fullscreen. This, as I have already said, happens to me both while I am watching movies or programming in fullscreen mode. This usually happens after awaking the laptop from hibernation. Now it looks like it has gone, but I am still wandering if someone knows something about it. And here back it is :[ I'm running Ubuntu 13.04
