• Need a remote desktop to a headless server without logging in first

  I've been using Linux for many years now but only to run servers. Over the last few days I've been struggling with a technical / configuration issue which I hope someone can help with. I've installed / un-installed many packages but just can't figure out what the "right" way of doing this is. The requirement seems simple Server runs Ubuntu 10.04 with xubuntu and SSH (I do NOT want to connect any screen, keyboard or mouse to the server) I have Windows 7 machine with putty on it and logging in to the server using SSH is fine I want to run an xterminal session on my Windows machine. Amongst the things I've tried is VNU but I can't get it to work because I believe you have to login on the server first. Thanks in advance

I would really appreciate it if someone can explain in simple English (that is without unnecessary tech jargon) What is REST What position it occupies in web architecture ecosystem How tightly (or loosely) it is coupled with protocol. What are the alternatives to REST and how does REST compare with them. • update-grub2 not finding windows7 partition..

  I have Ubuntu10.10 x64 and after installing Windows 7 grub dissapear I log on with my usb to reinstall grub and now grub only shows Ubuntu... Then when I try to do update-grub2 I get this: root@Alienware:~# sudo update-grub2 Generating grub.cfg ... Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.35-22-generic Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin ls: no se puede acceder a /var/lib/os-prober/mount/boot Boot: No existe el fichero o el directorio done root@Alienware:~# It is in spanish but it says it cant get access to /var/lib/os-prober/mount/boot and that Boot: dosent exist.. I dont know what I am doing wrong can someone help me please?

• Building my first ASP.NET WebForms application problem

  Hi I have recently started to learn C#/ASP.NET WebForms and after reading two books I thought I was ready to create my first web application. Problem is I could not have been more wrong. Although I am not quite a beginner as a programmer and have done some programming in Java (a Monopoly game), JavaScript (using jQuery), and PHP (create templates for WordPress), I never really created something that is database driven, and I can't seem to figure where to start. I am very confident in my HTML/CSS/jQuery skills, so that is not the problem. My end goal after becoming comfortable in ASP.NET WebForms is to learn MVC, ADO.NET, and the Entity Framework, and start a career as a .NET developer. I would like if someone could tell me some tutorials that build ASP.NET WebForms applications, such as a blog, so I can see what are the steps in creating an ASP.NET WebForms database driven application. I already have to projects in mind for ASP.NET. One is building a blog and the other building a job board.

• Cannot mount USB disks due to "not authorized" error

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 (.2?) installed. I don't plan to need GUI after setup so I modified the grub to start in console. However, whenever I want to start up GUI I need to type startx. Simple/basic stuff. However I seem to be hitting a snag: I am having trouble mounting/accessing USB flash drives in the GUI I started in the console. "Unable to mount location - not authorized". Seemed like it should be an easy fix, but can't figure out how I'm overlooking it. Can someone help me out?

• root and home are on seperate partitions, but home still uses up space on root?

  When installing Ubuntu 12.10 for the first time, I made sure /home had it's own partition, gave it about 185GB, and gave root ~10GB. Now root is almost full after a few days and I've noticed that root is as big as /home and some additional MB from some actual root files. Note that I deleted some unused files in /home to make sure it really affects how much space is used in root, and it clearly does. (checked in gparted) I've also made sure the files I am talking about are actually in /home/myname/ and not just in root's home. df -h spits out this information: df: `/root/.gvfs': Permission denied Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb2 9.2G 7.9G 908M 90% / udev 3.9G 12K 3.9G 1% /dev tmpfs 1.6G 932K 1.6G 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 3.9G 6.4M 3.9G 1% /run/shm none 100M 112K 100M 1% /run/user /dev/sdb3 184G 4.9G 170G 3% /home /dev/sdb4 729G 87G 642G 12% /media/mave/Storage I cut out my windows partitions as I don't see any relevance. • What's an acceptable "Avg. Page Load Time"?

  Is there any industry rule of thumb for what's considered an unacceptable load time v. an OK one v. a blistering fast one? We're just reviewing some Google Analytics data and getting 0.74 Avg. Page Load Time reported. I guess that's OK. However it would be good if some meatier comparison data were available, or a blog post, or somewhere where there's some analysis of what speeds are generally being achieved by various kinds of sites. Any useful links to help someone interpret these speeds? If you Google it you just get a lot of results dealing with how to improve your speed. We're not at that stage yet.

• On-line Based Conferencing For Admin Panel

  Working on my admin panels work station section which will allow the admin to use simple office tools such as word editors, calculators and whatnot. Under this section of the admin panel, I would like to add a conferencing feature which will allow any administrator to connect with another administrator 1-2-1 under the 1-2-1 Conferencing section, or to join a meeting under 'live meeting' section. Upon my search for on-line based, I found there are all these, what seem to be great applications out there, however not all of them are on-line based, and come with a price! I would like to a purely on-line based conferencing/meeting/1-2-1 feature which will allow administrators to communicate via text or sound, stream their video, share their screen and sending of files. I know this sounds like a big feature, and I am not asking for someone to answer by programming one for my website! • Search Engine Query Word Order

  I've pages with titles like 'Alpha with Beta'. For every such page, there is an inverse page 'Beta with Alpha'. Both pages link to each other. When someone on Google searches for 'Beta with Alpha', I'd like them to land on the correct page, but sometimes 'Alpha with Beta' ranks higher (or vice versa). I was thinking of inspecting the referral link when a visitor arrives on my site, and silently redirecting them to the correct page based on what they actually searched for. Just wondering if this could be penalized by Google as 'cloaking/sneaky redirects'? Or is there a better way to ensure that the correct page on my site ranks higher for the matching query?

• Failed Update & Mouse Issues

  I`m using my gfs computer - but I do have Ubuntu 11.10 up and running well to some degree. Still need to work out some bugs but not quite sure how to do that. My mouse is only somewhat responsive - cursor moves, and able to click on things but still unable to do a double click function. Left mouse button still not working at all. Tried running updates but it keeps coming up synaptic error. Not sure what that means. I have read that some people have done reinstalls of Ubuntu and it corrected the problems - not sure if that could work. Comments would be appreciated. Installed Ubuntu 11.10 but thinking of trying to wipe the system to do a fresh install can someone tell me how I get back to the Ubuntu installation menu. Wondering if gnome may need to be reset but not sure.

  I was searching something for bandwidth shaping. I found trickled and wondershaper which works on the total bandwidth. I would like to know if there exists a selective bandwidth shaping. I mean, I run 2 application which uses internet. I would like to limit the bandwidth of one of these 2 in real time (just like a sound equalizer). For example, I'm downloading something. Meanwhile, someone calls me on skype. So I want to slow the downloading to have more band in my video calling. Is this possible?

• Circle physics and collision using vectors

  This is a problem I've been having, When making a set number of filled circles at random locations on a JPanel and applying a gravity (a negative change in the y), each of the circles collide. • Best options for freelance or part-time programming? [closed]

A few years back I was all set to study computer science and get a job programming, but went a totally different route and went into healthcare. I currently work as a paramedic on a rotating 24/48 schedule, so I have two days off for every day I work, and a decent bit of downtime on the days that I do work. I've been looking at ways to earn some extra money with all that spare time, and was wondering if it'd be worth the effort to try and find a part-time/freelance gig. I know HTML/CSS, PHP, and I'm pretty familiar with Python and Ruby (and Rails). Anyways, was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction as what "skill set" would give me the best chance to be able to land a part-time/freelance gig. I realize this is a rather open-ended question but any direction is appreciated.

  I have a problem with the MATLAB 2012 installation. After having installed it using alt+f2 and having used gksudo nautilus I have installed MATLAB in the correct folder which is: /usr/local/MATLAB/R2012a Then I inserted the license and the window told "activation complete" or something like that. This made me happy, but only for a while because as soon as I try to search for Matlab within the applications I cannot find it and neither if I try to run matlab into terminal it says: command not found Can someone help me!? • How to protect Ubuntu from fork bomb

  I heard someone talking about a fork bomb, I did some research and found some dreadful information about some strange looking characters people can have you type at the command line and as a result do bad things on the computer. I certainly would not issue commands I do not understand but one never knows what can happen. I heard that some OS allows the administrator to place some limit on user processes to mitigate the effects of fork bombs, is this protection in Ubuntu by default or would a person with sudo privilege have to set this? If so, how?

Now while starting from http://developers.android.com I see the codes were in XML. So I googled for learning XML. The best site I found was http://www.w3schools.org but there I found that for learning XML I have to learn HTML and CSS. So I learned the basics of HTML and CSS. But, Now I find in that learning java is a must. So can someone give idea about the sequental languages that I should study now? Should I learn php,mysql too.   I'm actually trying GateIn for my firm and I don't manage to integrate OpenAM and GateIn. I follow all the steps in the GateInReference Guide but I've a problem. The scenarii of the problem is : Go to localhost:8080/portal Click sur Administrator I'm redirected to : openam.vauban.com:2080/openam_s952/UI/Login?realm=gatein&goto=http://localhost:8080/portal/private/classic I filled in the form with root / gtn I'm redirected to localhost:8080/portal/private/classic and the page is blank and the main fact is : The system seems to redirect me to this page infinitely.. Does Someone know an issue for this infinite loop? For information, I configured my OpenAM : Yo encode the cookies, use c66encode.

  Could someone please let me know where I might find resources for creating MSM files? While I am able to create MSI files using InstallShield, it seems that Visual Studio no longer supports Merge Module Projects, judging by the link below and the screenshot of my version of Visual Studio 2013 - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/z6z02ts5(v=vs.80).aspx To create a new merge module project: On the File menu, point to Add, then click New Project. In the resulting Add New Project dialog box, in the Project types pane, open the Other Project Types node and select Setup and Deployment Projects. • Non persistent keyboard shortcuts in Unity

  I did change the keyboard shortcuts for window navigation in Unity to use hjkl (vim movement). I did reassign the shortcuts via GUI in System Settings Keyboard Shortcuts. Here are two examples of the assigned shortcuts: Move window one workspace to the left = Shift+Ctrl+Alt+H Switch to workspace left = Ctrl+Alt+H Occasionally, when restarting the maching, these shortcuts are being reset to theit default values: Move window one workspace to the left = Shift+Ctrl+Alt+Left Switch to workspace left = Ctrl+Alt+Left How can I make these changes permanent? Can someone help me, narrowing down the problem?
