  • Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04. The system is running in low-graphics

    I am a newbie to Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 using a USB Stick and it was running all fine for a few weeks and this error popped up. According to one of my friend, the best way was to re-install Ubuntu. Being from a non unix background i thought the same too and after the second install it happened again, but only this time was much quicker, in 3 days. I don't want to re-install Ubuntu every time this happens. I am a complete newbie to Linux which means that i am really bad at using terminal. I know there are other people who fixed this issue using this very same forum, but unfortunately the answers provided are too complex for me to understand. Please let me know how to do this. Things I want to let you know: I would need help step by step if that is alright with you. After i get the error i get the options and i click exit to console login I get the following message in a black screen (which i think is a command line sort of thing): * Stopping save kernel messages [OK] apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name,using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName [OK] * Starting web server apache2 and a blinking cursor. So basically it looks like a dead end for my non unixy eye. And one final thing is before this issue had happened i had tried configuring Python to Apache2. For that i had uninstalled and installed LAMP server several time and edited the configuration files too. I don't know if this really is a concern, but I don't know.. I have a USB with Ubuntu 12.04 in it so i can install it anytime. (But i want to know what the issue is rather than running away) . I migrated to Ubuntu from Windows and i have no plans to go back. I think that's from my side. Please let me know if there are any questions.

    After installing Lubuntu 12.10, I decided to install IDLE 3 (from the official Ubuntu repository), but something unexpected happened, its icon gets bigger then the LxPanel and all the another aplications icos, the same happens at the menu when I select it from Menu Programming IDLE 3 Check the image: Note: Wasn't possible to take a printscreen from IDLE at the Menu because the printscreen action ignore the menu when it is opened. Knowing that I'd like to know how to change the icon of an application? Or better, if possible, how to resize this specific icon to normal size?

    Yes, you read correctly, how does humble ole Peter here make an engine using the 2 languages he's proficient in to an extent. I have more than enough time and wish not to use any 3rd party "stuffs" (engine parts like methods, classes etc etc, fully from scratch).   • Where to start when digging into an existing J2EE codebase?

    I work for a company that produces enterprise applications to be used by schools and districts to manage all of their tests and standards data. Their existing application is written in J2EE and is very large. I personally am a seasoned PHP and Ruby = RoR developer and I have been asked to attempt to implement easily added but crucial features to an existing J2EE codebase. I am very familiar with Java SE and know the architecture of a web application well. What I am asking for is, will this suffice for the task ahead and what tips can you give me in digging into the code base and actually efficiently adding these new features? Is there anything important I need to know before beginning and what can I expect in terms of problems and issues coming from a Java SE, PHP, RoR background? Time isn't too much of an issue, I should have plenty of time to familiarize myself with J2EE.Please also note, syntax will not be a problem here.

    I can open a cmd window and start a tail by entering something like this: tail -f C:\Oracle\WebCenter\Sites\11gR1\Sites\11.1.1.6.1\logs\sites.log This is probably a stupid question, but how do I do this in a batch file? It should be easy but it's not working - I have tried a couple variations and no success. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong here?     I have a 11-year old son who wants to do game programming. I've started him on C++ (C++11) and he's learned iostreams, looping, functions, logic and flow control. I'm using the standard library and no memory management at all. But I would like to ask: What language would you suggest for a pre-teen (Python, ...)? What books would you suggest? We looked at one book that was just for console ASCII games. I liked the C++ that it taught but I think he'll get bored without some graphics at some point.

    I am sorry if I am repeating this issue. But I am a layman and cant understand the answers posted. I want to do away with Windows XP Professional (I have lost the product key) that I have on an old desktop PC that is more than 7/8 years old. I didnt use the PC for a couple of years as this laptop was more convenient. Now I have started to use this PC but cannot download SP2 onto the PC as it keeps asking for product key and I dont remember where I wrote it down or where I kept it. So I downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 onto the desktop screen (about 753MB and 3 hours) and then used Unetbootin to put this on my pendrive. After completing the process, I have on my pendrive 9 folders, 3 text files, 1 autorun file, 1 ldlinux file, 1 wubi application file and 5 other files - total 20 items. Though on bootup I opted for USB boot, the boot-up opens into Windows. It simply bypasses the USB where ubuntu lies. What do I do? Am I doing things correctly. Pls explain in simple terms.

  • Intel Network Connection: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    I have a Intel® Desktop Board DP55KG (see http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/DP55KG/DP55KG-overview.htm), which has a Intel 82578DC Gigabit Network Connection on board. Additionally, I have a Intel PRO/1000 PT Dual Port Server Adapter in a PCI express slot and I am running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit. Also I am running with Intels latest network driver, in the 82578DC questions this means 11.6.92.0 with driver date 2010.04.12. The problem I am having is that the Intel 82578DC Gigabit Network Connection will not start on boot with the following message: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". Disabling and then enabling the device after boot makes the network connection work again without any problems, but as soon as I reboot the problem occurs again. Any suggestion how to fix this? I have seen this problem on another Intel S3420GP board as well in Windows 7 that is.

    I'm having an intermittent issue where asterisk will play our greeting to the caller, and then drop the call instead of making our phones ring. I'm unable to reproduce the problem with any phones I have here, and many callers get through just fine. Some callers though, run into the problem, and I can't find any pattern to it. The bit of information I could find said it was caused by an error in evaluating a dialplan expression.   • How do I configure upstart to run a script on shutdown when the process takes longer than 10secs?

    I am running ubuntu 11.10 in a virtual machine (VirtualBox) to learn more about development in linux. I am using a git repository to save my work and have written a script to bundle my work up and save it to the shared folder for use while the virtual machine is not running. I would like to automatically run this script before shutdown so that my work is always available if the vm is off (currently I have to manually run the script).     I have a website template where I do not know the number of menu items or the size of the menu items that will be required. The js below works exactly the way I want it to, however this is the most js I've every written. Are there any disadvantages or potential problems with this method that I'm not aware of because I'm a js beginner? I'm currently manually setting the padding for each site.   • Why is a SUBST'd drive inaccessible via shortcut or Run menu, but works fine from My Computer?

    I have shortcuts to C:, D:, and E: in my quick launch bar. C and E work fine when I click on them, but D does nothing (that I can see) when I click on it. D and E are both SUBST'd drives pointing to folders that happen to be network shares. (I do this rather than mapping them so it doesn't have to go through the network layer--that way it works faster and I still get recycle bin functionality, etc.) If I go Start-Run and type D: or D:\, I get an error box saying This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel. If I go to My Computer and double-click the D drive, it comes up fine. Also, if I type \\servername\sharename pointing to the same place, it comes up fine. This just started happening this morning, out of the blue. It has been working fine ever since I set it up. Why might this be?

    Hi, i´m a little bit confused by reading all this posts an tutorials about staring with Zend, because there a so many different ways to solve a problem. I only need a feedback about my code to know if iam on the right way: To simply get a (hard coded) Navigation for my side (depending on who is logged in) i build a Controller Plugin with a postDispatch method that holds following code: public function postDispatch(Zend_Controller_Request_Abstract $request) { $menu = new Menu(); //Render menu in menu.phtml $view = new Zend_View(); //NEW view -> add View Helper $prefix = 'My_View_Helper'; $dir = dirname(__FILE__).'/../../View/Helper/'; $view->addHelperPath($dir,$prefix); $view->setScriptPath('../application/default/views/scripts/menu'); $view->menu = $menu->getMenu(); $this->getResponse()->insert('menu', $view->render('menu.phtml')); } Is it right that i need to set the helper path once again? I did this in a Plugin Controller named ViewSetup.   • How to prevent Excel from wanting to start in Safe Mode?

    We have a background process that calls Excel for generation of report spreadsheets. Occasionally, a crash or inadvertent server reboot will occur while Excel is running. The first launch of Excel after the restart brings up the dialog box (paraphrasing here) "Would you like to start Excel in safe mode?" (Yes/No) The issue is that our background app can't handle this dialog box, and acts as if Excel will not start properly, and the background jobs fail as a result. I can find CL switches for starting Excel in safe mode, but I can't find anything that will instruct Excel to always start in normal mode without that prompt dialog. (I don't have access to the other program's code, so I can't make it pass through a "Yes" value if it runs into that box.) Is there a registry hack or some other way I can force Excel into normal mode every time it's called?
