  • Windows 7 sharing data between users via the registry

    - by r99
Where can I create/modify/delete registry keys to share data between users in the Windows 7 registry? Both of the users are non administrators and it shouldn't require admin privileges. The application I'm working on uses the registry to write a key from userA and then userB can read/modify/delete it. Neither user has admin privileges and it won't be possible to change this. Is there an official MSDN guide to how to use the registry in Windows 7? Any links describing proper use of the registry would be useful.

  • Max tcp/ip connections on Windows Server 2008

    - by zendar
I have .Net service that listens on single port over TCP protocol. Clients connect and then transmit data for some time (from few minutes to several hours). Is there any limit on number of connections on Windows 2008 server? I did not hit any, since now there is up to 50 users. Plan is to have thousands of users, so I'd like to know if there will be problems in future. Edit: As Cloud answered, it seems that there are some limits in some versions of Windows Server 2008. Is there any reference on those limits? I tried Google, but it returns articles on limit on half-bound tcp connections.

  • Update Azure Service Configuration File using Powershell

    - by David Osborn
    I'm trying to write a powershell script that updats each of the DiagnosticsConnectionString and DataConnectionString values below, but I can't seem to find each individual Role node using $serviceconfig.ServiceConfiguration.SelectSingleNode("Role[@name='MyService_WorkerRole']") doing echo $serviceconfig.ServiceConfiguration.Role lists out both Role nodes for me so I know it is working up to that point, but after that I am not having much success. where $serviceConfig contains the below XML: <?xml version="1.0"?> <ServiceConfiguration serviceName="MyService" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ServiceHosting/2008/10/ServiceConfiguration"> <Role name="MyService_WorkerRole"> <Instances count="1" /> <ConfigurationSettings> <Setting name="DiagnosticsConnectionString" value="really long string" /> <Setting name="DataConnectionString" value="really long string 2" /> </ConfigurationSettings> </Role> <Role name="MyService_WebRole"> <Instances count="1" /> <ConfigurationSettings> <Setting name="DiagnosticsConnectionString" value="really long string 3" /> <Setting name="DataConnectionString" value="really long string 4" /> </ConfigurationSettings> </Role> </ServiceConfiguration>

  • Creating compound applications in Windows 7

    - by Mmarquee
I need to port a suite of Windows applications (running under XP with little security turned on) to Windows 7 with various levels of security, depending on how our clients may configure it. Each functional area is a seperate executable or DLL that is downloaded and registered by a central 'compound' application. This means that the different parts are all joined together to form in effect a large single application. My problem is that the compound application knows about the other applications via COM registery, either as a typelibrary or as OCXs, where appropriate. I have tried several questions here to try and solve the problems I am getting, but I don't seem to be able to get around the problem of needing elevated access to register applications and access the registry. Our clients will be expecting the same (relatively) seemless download and activation process as current under XP. So does anyone have a solution for registering typelibraries and OCX controls without need to go through an elevation process. Thanks in advance

  • Add device driver to Windows CE 6.0 through Platform Builder

    - by Luís Mendes
I'm trying to add a device driver to a Windows CE 6.0 image that I'm creating through Platform Builder. The driver in question, for the VIA 6656 chipset (used in many USB Wi-Fi adapters/dongles), is available in the manufacturer's website and consists of several files: .PDB, .REG, .BIB, .DLL, .MAP and .REL. I understand that the REG file must be imported in my OSDesign.reg, the BIB file to my OSDesign.bib and the DLL must be placed in the /Windows folder of my image. What I don't understand is what to do with the remaining files (PDB, MAP and REL). Could anyone assist me in this matter? Thank you in advance!

  • Azure batch operations delete several blobs and tables

    - by reft
I have a function that deletes every table & blob that belongs to the affected user. CloudTable uploadTable = CloudStorageServices.GetCloudUploadsTable(); TableQuery<UploadEntity> uploadQuery = uploadTable.CreateQuery<UploadEntity>(); List<UploadEntity> uploadEntity = (from e in uploadTable.ExecuteQuery(uploadQuery) where e.PartitionKey == "uploads" && e.UserName == User.Idendity.Name select e).ToList(); foreach (UploadEntity uploadTableItem in uploadEntity) { //Delete table TableOperation retrieveOperationUploads = TableOperation.Retrieve<UploadEntity>("uploads", uploadTableItem.RowKey); TableResult retrievedResultUploads = uploadTable.Execute(retrieveOperationUploads); UploadEntity deleteEntityUploads = (UploadEntity)retrievedResultUploads.Result; TableOperation deleteOperationUploads = TableOperation.Delete(deleteEntityUploads); uploadTable.Execute(deleteOperationUploads); //Delete blob CloudBlobContainer blobContainer = CloudStorageServices.GetCloudBlobsContainer(); CloudBlockBlob blob = blobContainer.GetBlockBlobReference(uploadTableItem.BlobName); blob.Delete(); } Each table got its own blob, so if the list contains 3 uploadentities, the 3 table and the 3 blobs will be deleted. I heard you can use table batch operations for reduce cost and load. I tried it, but failed miserable. Anyone intrested in helping me:)? Im guessing tablebatch operations are for tables only, so its a no go for blobs, right? How would you add tablebatchoperations for this code? Do you see any other improvements that can be done? Thanks!

  • Windows Azure:broken logging after migration to the new SDK 1.3

    - by cloud.dev
Hi, pls, help. I've migrated to new SDK 1. (Full-IIS mode) I use the following logging: case TraceLevel.Error: Trace.TraceError(message); break; case TraceLevel.Warning: Trace.TraceWarning(message); break; case TraceLevel.Info: Trace.TraceInformation(message); break; case TraceLevel.Verbose: Trace.WriteLine(message); break; it worked fine until I migrated to the new SDK. now, logging works only for Worker Roles. Web-Role can log only inside OnStart-method of WebRole.cs in other cases: logged nothing I understand that Full-IIS means different domains. so, I must call someway WaIIS.exe from w3wp.exe or ...?

Should support atleast asp.net 3.5 and php Will be good if it has support for asp.net mvc (no problem even if it is not available also) Should be able to install third party blog sites. Bandwidth, total space and performance are not very important. Silverlight is also an added advantage (no problem even if it is not available also). There should be no advertisement or banner added by the hosting company in the site.

  • How can I detect when the .NET Framework feature is "turned off" in Windows 7 / Vista?

    - by John Myczek
My application requires the .NET Framework version 3.5. I recently ran into a customer that had the .NET Framework installed but turned off on Windows Vista (also applies to Windows 7). In this case, my installer (InstallShield 2009) does not prompt the user to install the Framework (because it is already installed) and when my application runs it crashes immediately. I tried another .NET application and it also crashes immediately. Is there any way to detect this situation and handle it more gracefully? Just detecting this during install is not ideal since the .NET Framework can be turned off at any time. Ideally, the application would be able to check and display a friendly message to the user telling them they need to turn on the .NET Framework. EDIT: "Turning off" the .NET Framework in Windows Vista or Windows 7 is not the same as uninstalling it. The Framework can be simply turned back on without reinstalling: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Turn-Windows-features-on-or-off

  • Windows Phone 7 development: Using isolated storage

    - by DigiMortal
In my previous posting about Windows Phone 7 development I showed how to use WebBrowser control in Windows Phone 7. In this posting I make some other improvements to my blog reader application and I will show you how to use isolated storage to store information to phone. Why isolated storage? Isolated storage is place where your application can save its data and settings. The image on right (that I stole from MSDN library) shows you how application data store is organized. You have no other options to keep your files besides isolated storage because Windows Phone 7 does not allow you to save data directly to other file system locations. From MSDN: “Isolated storage enables managed applications to create and maintain local storage. The mobile architecture is similar to the Silverlight-based applications on Windows. All I/O operations are restricted to isolated storage and do not have direct access to the underlying operating system file system. Ultimately, this helps to provide security and prevents unauthorized access and data corruption.” Saving files from web to isolated storage I updated my RSS-reader so it reads RSS from web only if there in no local file with RSS. User can update RSS-file by clicking a button. Also file is created when application starts and there is no RSS-file. Why I am doing this? I want my application to be able to work also offline. As my code needs some more refactoring I provide it with some next postings about Windows Phone 7. If you want it sooner then please leave me a comment here. Here is the code for my RSS-downloader that downloads RSS-feed and saves it to isolated storage file calles rss.xml. public class RssDownloader {     private string _url;     private string _fileName;       public delegate void DownloadCompleteDelegate();     public event DownloadCompleteDelegate DownloadComplete;       public RssDownloader(string url, string fileName)     {         _url = url;         _fileName = fileName;     }       public void Download()     {         var request = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(_url);         var result = (IAsyncResult)request.BeginGetResponse(ResponseCallback, request);            }       private void ResponseCallback(IAsyncResult result)     {         var request = (HttpWebRequest)result.AsyncState;         var response = request.EndGetResponse(result);           using(var stream = response.GetResponseStream())         using(var reader = new StreamReader(stream))         using(var appStorage = IsolatedStorageFile.GetUserStoreForApplication())         using(var file = appStorage.OpenFile("rss.xml", FileMode.OpenOrCreate))         using(var writer = new StreamWriter(file))         {             writer.Write(reader.ReadToEnd());         }           if (DownloadComplete != null)             DownloadComplete();     } } Of course I modified RSS-source for my application to use rss.xml file from isolated storage. As isolated storage files also base on streams we can use them everywhere where streams are expected. Reading isolated storage files As isolated storage files are opened as streams you can read them like usual files in your usual applications. The next code fragment shows you how to open file from isolated storage and how to read it using XmlReader. Previously I used response stream in same place. using(var appStorage = IsolatedStorageFile.GetUserStoreForApplication()) using(var file = appStorage.OpenFile("rss.xml", FileMode.Open)) {     var reader = XmlReader.Create(file);                      // more code } As you can see there is nothing complex. If you have worked with System.IO namespace objects then you will find isolated storage classes and methods to be very similar to these. Also mention that application storage and isolated storage files must be disposed after you are not using them anymore.

  • Details of 5GB and 50GB SQL Azure databases have now been released, along with new price points

    - by Eric Nelson
Like many others signed up to the Windows Azure Platform, I received an email overnight detailing the upcoming database size changes for SQL Azure. I know from our work with early adopters over the last 12 months that the 1GB and 10GB limits were sometimes seen as blockers, especially when migrating existing application to SQL Azure. On June 28th 2010, we will be increasing the size limits: SQL Azure Web Edition database from 1 GB to 5 GB SQL Azure Business Edition database will go from 10 GB to 50 GB Along with these changes comes new price points, including the option to increase in increments of 10GB: Web Edition: Up to 1 GB relational database = $9.99 / month Up to 5 GB relational database = $49.95 / month Business Edition: Up to 10 GB relational database = $99.99 / month Up to 20 GB relational database = $199.98 / month Up to 30 GB relational database = $299.97 / month Up to 40 GB relational database = $399.96 / month Up to 50 GB relational database = $499.95 / month Check out the full SQL Azure pricing.
