• Can't turn off display - 13.10 / iMac

  I can find no way to completely turn off the display on a late 2013 iMac running 13.10 (Saucy). In the power management settings, I configured the display to "turn off" after one minute to see what would happen. The dimness goes all the way down and everything disappears, BUT the LED backlight remains on. When I try the "xset dpms force off" command, absolutely nothing happens--the command is accepted (no error or warning), but nothing changes. I then wiped everything clean and installed 13.04 (Raring). Both methods (dpms and waiting for sleep) work perfectly there, so something has changed in this new version. The problem can be replicated simply by booting from a bootable USB stick. So, I also gave version 14.04 (Trusty) a try in this manner and it has the exact same issues as 13.10. P.S. I would gladly use 13.04, but the catch there is that I can not get the network card to function. I have spent a week now reading everything i can find on both of these matters with no luck at all.   I have a Computer Science degree (long2 time ago) .. I do know Java OOP but i am now trying to pick up C++. I do have C and of course data structure using C or pascal. I have started reading Bjarne Stroustrup book (The C++ Programming Language - Special Edition) but find it extremely difficult esp. some section which i don't have exposure such as Recursive Descent Parser (chapter 6). In terms of the language i don't foresee i have problem but i have problem as mentioned cos' those topic are usually covered in a Master Degree program such as construction of compiler. I just bought a book called C++ primer (Stanley Lipmann) which i heard it is a very good book for C++. Only setback is it's of course no match with the amount of information from the original C++ creator. Please advice. Thanks.

• Application tried to present modally an active controller ios

  I was trying to set the ViewController with a parent view controller before it shows show that it can provide call backs, I done this using PrepareForSegue - (void) prepareForSegue:(UIStoryboardSegue *)segue sender:(id)sender { if ([segue.identifier isEqualToString:@"newQuarter"]) { [segue.destinationViewController setParentViewController:self]; } } It crashed giving me the error message: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: 'Application tried to present modally an active controller. So I tried using another method and set up a new view controller on the button touches up, - (IBAction) buttonClicked { NewViewController *newController = [[NewViewController alloc] init]; [newController setParentViewController:self]; [self presentViewController:newController animated:YES completion:nil]; } but with no luck it is still giving me the same error message, can anyone please advice? • Using Javascript to call the Azure Blob Storage REST API

  I'm developing a Flash app that saves files to the Azure Blob Storage API. I've learned that you should use the REST API directly rather than a go-between WCF service as this is the most efficient (using a web role is a bottleneck). The problem is that Flash can't do PUT or DELETE methods over Http and has to use external Javascript. This is not an area that I'm familiar with and need some advice/links to examples of using Javascript to work with the Storage API (I've obviously Googled this to no avail). Is this even possible? • Problem running iPhone application on iPhone from Xcode (and in Instruments)

  Hi I have a problem running one application on the iPhone from Xcode (or Instruments). When I try to run the app I get the error message Failed to upload XXX.app in the bottom left corner of Xcode. The strange thing is it actually uploaded the app to the iPhone but it doesn't start it (after this I can start the app by hand on the iPhone). So without being able to start the app from Xcode or instruments I have no chance of debugging/performance testing. Any advice on what might be going wrong here? • Safari 5 Extension XMLHttpRequest Error: INVALID_STATE_ERR: DOM Exception 11

  I am experimenting with the new Safari 5 extensions JS API and I am having an issue right from the ground up, I want to use an XMLHttpRequest to get an RSS feed from a website however upon the .send() it immediatly kicks off errors: Failed to load resource: cancelled Then looking at the XMLHttpRequest object is says in status: Error: INVALID_STATE_ERR: DOM Exception 11 I don't know why but this is my code, I hope I can get some advice as to whats going wrong: var xml = new XMLHttpRequest(); xml.open('GET', 'http://year3.gdnm.org/feed/'); xml.send(); Thanks in advance.

• WPF Combobox textbox not updating when binding changes.

  I have a WPF CombBox as follows: <ComboBox ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource myList}}" SelectedItem="{Binding Path=mySelectedItem}" /> The problem I have is that when the bound value changes, the selected value in the combobox's textbox does not update. (Note - the values in the combobox list do update). I am using MVVM so I can detect in the view model when the binding changes and call a property changed event and this is updating the combobox, but not the value displayed within the textbox. I think this could be done in the template of the combobox - somehow make the textbox be bound to the selecteditem of the combobox, or always update when it updates? I don't know how to do this though so any advice would be most appreciated.

• Couldn't attachto Firefox 3.x browser by using Browser.AttachTo<FireFox>method in WatiN 2.0 RC1

  I am using HTTPWatch automation API to launch a new Firefox instance like that: HttpWatch.Controller ct = new HttpWatch.Controller(); HttpWatch.Plugin plugin = ct.FireFox.New(""); plugin.GotoURL("http://www.google.com"); These codes could start a Firefox browser successfully. Then I want to control the browser in WatiN 2.0: FireFox ff = Browser.AttachTo<FireFox>(Find.ByTitle("Google")); WatiN could not find Firefox window (JSSH plugin has been added in Firefox). But the same test on IE 7 is ok. I even tried to open a Firefox window manually and visit google.com page. WaitN in IE7 could attach to the browser, but Firefox failed. Is there anything wrong with my codes? Or any other advice? Thanks in advance! • Silverlight Project - Slide-in and out Panel - How?

  I don't know what exactly this feature is, but I would like to simulate this in my Silverlight project. I am a C# developer and am moving to Silverlight and Expression Studio (Blend) for richer UX. Let's say I have some user controls and would like them to come into the screen (slide-in and out) as shown in the following site I found: http://www.templatemonster.com/silverlight-templates/28722.html On the menu, as one clicks on the menu item, the 'screen' slides to the left and then a new 'screen' slides in from the left to right. I really want to learn this stuff, but don't know what these 'features' are called? For example what are these 'screens' called in the xaml world? Also, what is the 'slide-in/out' called in the xaml world? Can someone point me to a good article/whitepaper? Thanks in advance for any advice.

• Acrobat Reader ActiveX in WebBrowser stealing focus [C#]

  I'm using webBrowser.Navigate(url) control to display page. I noticed this action steals focus from current control (grid) and than I have problem to focus grid back (tired myGrid.Focus, .Select etc...) This is really annoying behaviour of browser... Does anyone knows how to prevent focus stealing by Browser or (if not) hot to force to focus control back ? EDIT: I've also tried webBrowser.DocumentCompleted event to focus back to grid EDIT 2 Good case to test this is openning PDF files webBrowser.Navigate(@"C:\TEMP\test.pdf") I believe this is ActiveX issue. On first glance it looks that this is not problem with focusing control but loosing entire Form focus... EDIT 3 I tried another approach: Form keyPress event: I thought I can capture form's keyPress and move focus from WebBrowser / AdobeReader ActiveX to my control. But surprisingly event is not fired! Looks Reader taken all control and there is no way to do anything programically until you do mouse click on (at least) form's caption Any advice (s) ?

• Rails: savage_beast forum plugin and tinymce - new post works but edit doesn't use tinymce properly

  Hi all. I'm using the savage_beast forum plugin and tinymce (via the tinymce_hammer plugin) in my rails app. When posting a new post, tinymce works fine. However, when i go to edit a post i get the tinymce editor, but the content in the edit box has all been converted into html. Can anyone tell me how i get it so that what appears in the tinymce edit box is the original text i posted, rather than the converted-to-html version? Does it need to get converted back from html into a format tinymce will use? Savage_beast saves the original given text in a body field, and the converted-to-html text in a body_html field. After tinymce does its work in the first instance (ie when posting a new post) the body field gets text that's already been converted to html. So i guess i need to convert it back to whatever tinymce expects? I'd expect tinymce to be happy with getting html, and to just handle it, though. grateful for any advice - max

  I have an existing class (I didn't write) that implements IXmlSerializable. I decided to create a WCF service so my Silverlight application could access this class. I return the class as List. In the generated proxy, instead of an ObservableCollection like I'm expecting, I get ArrayOfXElement[]. If I remove the IXmlSerializable attribute, I get an the ObservableCollection. I don't quite understand what is happening, but I just want my SL app to receive an ObservableCollection. Is my only choice to create a DTO class and send back a list of those? Any advice?

  Hi All! I'm planning to develop program in Java which will provide diagnosis. The data set is divided into two parts one for training and the other for testing. My program should learn to classify from the training data (BTW which contain answer for 30 questions each in new column, each record in new line the last column will be diagnosis 0 or 1, in the testing part of data diagnosis column will be empty - data set contain about 1000 records) and then make predictions in testing part of data :/ I've never done anything similar so I'll appreciate any advice or information about solution to similar problem. I was thinking about Java Machine Learning Library or Java Data Mining Package but I'm not sure if it's right direction... ? and I'm still not sure how to tackle this challenge... Please advise. • How to convert Silverlight XAML to Resource dictionary in Silverlight 2

  I am looking for the quickest and easiest way to combine two silverlight projects. Once has controls all in Silverlight XAML the other is template driven and uses a template based on a Silverlight resource dictionary. I am looking for some advice and resources on the best and quickest way to do this. One project is based on this: Silverlight Image Slider http://www.silverlightshow.net/items/Image-slider-control-in-Silverlight-1.1.aspx the other project is based on this: Open Video Player http://www.openvideoplayer.com/ I need to move the slider into the player, but the player uses a template and I just don't get how to merge the two as I do not understand resource dictionaries as they are applied to the player. We have completely gutted and made each proiject do what we want, but heck if I can figure out how to combine them.

  New to subsonic and having issues figuring it out. I am simply just trying to do a distinct search and any documentation I find is telling me to use the class/method SubSonic.SqlQuery Though I am finding out that since I am using the newest version, a lot of the documentation I am finding does not apply. For example, I am getting this query working beautifully using Subsonic.Query.SqlQuery though there is NO distinct method hanging off of it as suggested by what I have seen. Please advice! • CSS: Setting width/height as Percentage minus pixels

  Hi all, I've seen this question asked in a couple other contexts on SO, but I thought it would be worth asking again for my particular case. I'm trying to create some re-usable CSS classes for more consistency and less clutter on my site, and I'm stuck on trying to standardize one thing I use frequently. I have a container div that I don't want to set the height for (because it will vary depending on where on the site it is), and inside it is a header div, and then an unordered list of items, all with CSS applied to them. It looks a lot like this: I want the unordered list to take up the remaining room in the container div, knowing that the header div is 18px tall. I just don't know how to specify the list's height as "the result of 100% minus 18px". Does anyone have any advice in this situation? Thanks very much.

• Xcode warning: application executable contains unsupported architecture(s):arm, arm (-19031)

  Hi all. I've been receiving this warning since I loaded my project in last Xcode 4 preview. There was no warning before that but now I can't get rid of it even in Xcode 3.2. I've been googling but nobody seems to have the same error. My project and target settings are correct (IMHO): Architectures: Standard (armv6 armv7), Base SDK: Latest iOS (currently set to iOS 4.2), Build Active Architecture Only: FALSE, Valid Architectures: armv6 armv7. I compared every project setting with other projects and and found no differences. I even have recreated the project starting from scratch and copying classes, resources and frameworks with the same result. I must say that the warning is not shown when I set Debug configuration. I hope someone can help me because I don't know what to do. Thanks in advice.

• Android TranslateAnimation resets after animation

  I'm creating something like a SlideDrawer but with most customization, basically the thing is working but the animation is flickering at the end. To further explain, I got an TranslateAnimation then after this animation it returns back to the original position, if i set setFillAfter then the buttons inside the layout stops working. If i listen to onAnimationEnd and set other's layout to View.GONE the layout fickers. Judging from it is that on animation end, the view goes back to original position before the View.GONE is called. Any advice would be awesome. Thanks

In short, I am trying to make an asynchronous web service call from my VB.NET application. But my "client_DownloadDataCompleted" callback is NEVER being called when the download is complete. • Processing a tab delimited file with shell script processing

  Hello, normally I would use Python/Perl for this procedure but I find myself (for political reasons) having to pull this off using a bash shell. I have a large tab delimited file that contains six columns and the second column is integers. I need to shell script a solution that would verify that the file indeed is six columns and that the second column is indeed integers. I am assuming that I would need to use sed/awk here somewhere. Problem is that I'm not that familiar with sed/awk. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks! Lilly

The error occurs for attempts at both local syncs (that is: source and destination on the local harddisk only) and remote syncs (using "-e ssh" from the openssh package). • How to follow user location with MapKit

  I'm using MapKit to display the user's location relative to pins around them. I'd like to be able to mimic the functionality that Maps provides via the crosshair button in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. I'm already aware that MapKit provides a CLLocation object with the user's location via MKUserLocation, I just wanted to seek advice on how I should keep focus on that location. My initial inclination was to use an NSTimer to center the map on that coordinate every 500ms or so. Is there a better way to do this? Is there something built in to MapKit that I'm missing that will accomplish this? Thanks so much, Brendan
