• How I can fix the "Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered"?

  I'm using a GeForce GTX 580, with Windows 7 64-bit. The driver version of the GTX is 301.42. The problem happens after a few minutes, when I'm playing specifc games. It won't happen in all games - And I don't have any idea why these games doesn't work. The games that doesn't work: Battlefield 3, Civilization V, Sniper Elite V2. The games that work: Mass Effect 3, Crysis 2, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Skyrim, L.A. Noire. As you can see, it's not a problem of "The games that demand more stop working". I've tryed updating the driver of the graphics-card, the bios of the motherboard, even formated my computer (It was needing it) and instaled every driver in the last version possible. This problem happens since I bought my graphics-card, 6 months ago. After a few minutes, from 10 to 20, the pixels in the monitor become strange, with random colors and effects, like it was broken. Then, everything goes black, and the message appears "Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered". After that, I need to close the game and start again. I am not overclocking, and my temperature never goes higher than 70ºC.

• VMWare Workstation 8 Disk I/O & Hard Faults

  I have VMWare Workstation 8 installed on a host machine with the following specs: Intel i5 2500k CPU 16GB DDR3 1600 ram 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black HD I have two Windows 7 virtual machines configured (currently running one at a time but will be operating both at once when my 32GB RAM kit arrives in a couple days). Each one is configured with 8GB of RAM and no tweaks/performance customizations or anything done. All of the VMWare settings are the defaults. When I boot into these machines and run various programs (Visual Studio, Outlook, etc), I can hear the disk thrashing quite a bit and checking Resource Monitor, I can see that I'm getting anywhere between 300-800 hard faults per second. From the host machine, it shows they're coming from the VMWare image. If I go to the virtual machine, whatever app I'm currently loading is the image that's causing the hard faults. As I understand it, hard faults are (simply) when an address in memory has been swapped out to the page file and has to be read from the page file instead of from memory. I don't understand why this is happening though. With 8GB of ram on the guest machine and 6.5GB available, what could be causing this? I know Windows 7 supposedly improved on page file management over XP but it seems excessive for this kind of slowdown, disk thrashing and high hard fault count when I have that much free RAM. Is there anything I can to to improve the performance in my guest machines? On the host machine, I can open/run any applications at all and hard faults stays around 0 with low disk I/O.

• Is reliability reputation of mechanical keyboards overblown?

  A while back I worked up to finally buying mechanical keyboard (~$100 range, "black" switches) and was initially quite content with purchase. However just outside first year (read it - as soon as warranty expired) it started to develop repeat issues (press once, get chain of letter repeated) on multiple keys. It doesn't react to generic cleaning (up to compressed air) and searching Internet shows noticeable amount of people with similar-to-identical issues, spanning years. This makes me severely hesitant to buy another mechanical keyboard, considering: every other keyboard I ever owned, including ultra-cheap crap managed to last longer than that typing experience is nice, but not lifechanging-fan-forever nice for me my choice of mechanical keyboards is severely limited not many brands represented in local market and primarily crazy looking gamer models russian (not to mention russian and ukrainian if possible) layout excludes international ordering price tag for a meek year of use I got our of it is plain demoralizing It is obvious mechanical keyboards have their fans, but shopping around for "best fit" or getting into multiple hundreds price tags is probably not something I am highly interested in. Considering my constraints and bad experience with reliability, is it practical for me to sink more money into buying mechanical keyboard(s) again? In other words - manufacturers are beaming about how crazy reliable mechanical keyboards are. Are active long time users of such keyboards confidently of same opinion?

• Windows XP hanging on login screen

  I have been given two Eee PC 100HA to manage for some people, they are both running the same hardware and XP home but one is having some strange problems with logging on. The main problem is that it hangs at the login screen for ages and sometimes never gets to the desktop. The strange thing is it only seems to do it after the computer has been cold started, but it won't do it if the computer has been restarted. I have made two logs of the start up with process monitor but every time the logger is attached the computer will log in fine. I have also set the computer to blue screen and create a crash dump when you press ctrl scroll twice but when I do it at the hung login it just sits at a black screen and I don't get a crash dump, I have turned off the auto system restart on failure option also. I can usually fix most computer start up and shutdown problems but this one has got me stuffed. Has anyone had the same problems before, or can recommend something that I can try? Cheers.

• SVG doesn't work on subdomain - some browsers try to download rather than display

  I have a site with a 'development' subdomain, which displays my SVG file exactly as intended. However when I copy it across to www, or any other subdomain (e.g. 'test') some browsers try to open the file in an external editor, therefore asking me to download the file rather than displaying it. For example: http://development.mysite.com/test.svg - works http://www.mysite.com/test.svg - doesn't work The SVG file: <?xml version="1.0" standalone="no"?> <!DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD SVG 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/1.1/DTD/svg11.dtd"> <svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" version="1.1"> <circle cx="100" cy="50" r="40" stroke="black" stroke-width="2" fill="red" /> </svg> This happens in Firefox, Chrome and Safari, however IE9 and above display the file as intended. It is a Windows hosting, and I have <mimeMap fileExtension=".svg" mimeType="image/svg+xml" /> in my web.config file My hunch is that there must be some setting on the server which I need my hosting company to make. Can anyone suggest what might cause this issue?

• How to convert JPEG JFIF files to JPEG Exif format?

  I recently put the SD card of my camera in a Windows 7 PC and start browsing pictures on it. I noticed some were not aligned correctly and use rotate feature included in Windows Photo Viewer in order to view them as I wanted. What I didn't know is that when rotate feature is used, it also overwrite the picture when pressing next or previous button resulting in a possible loss of quality (which is in my opinion a bad idea, app should at least warn user of what will happened when using such a feature). After that, I re-inserted the SD card back in my camera and bad surprise happened : the rotated picture could not be previewed anymore. Instead, i got a black screen saying "Incompatible JPEG format". Other files (untouched) are still working ok. To try to understand what happened I opened a JPEG file from camera and one generated on windows 7 in a hex editor. Here is the difference : The camera JPEG files have a Exif tag in them (with 0xE1 in header). Other JPEG files (Windows 7) have first a JFIF tag in it, followed by a Exif tag (with 0xE0 in header). So if i understand it well, both are JPEG files, but using a different internal format. Here is my question : is it possible (using some tool) to convert JFIF files to Exif format ? I understand that original camera files have been reencoded and thus lose some quality (getting originals back is impossible). What i want know if convert them from JFIF back to Exif (without a second loss of quality if possible...)

• I think my laptop just died

  I have a Dell 1330M that as of about 15 minutes ago will no longer POST. What happened was I was working, stepped away for a moment, and when I came back it was turned off. I thought that was odd, but turned it on and things seemed fine. About 1/2 hour later it crashed and restarted, but came up fine again. It did this once more. At this point I was starting to get worried, but I hadn't had any problems with the laptop before and every crash was after doing some work in a virtual machine that I don't often use, so I at put the blame there. It didn't feel like it was overheating anywhere and there's no ozone smell of overheated electronics. Then it crashed a final time and now when I turn it on all I see is a bright screen with a bunch of vertical lines (noise). I've tried removing the memory sticks one at a time, but I get the same result with either memory stick in either slot. With no memory at all it stops earlier in the POST process and the screen is completely blank (black, no backlight). As I type this, I hear a double beep from the system about once every 10 minutes. I'm pretty sure the hard drive is fine because it fails during post, before anything off the drive is needed. The power supply seems good because the screen is nice and bright. It's not the RAM because swapping that around made no difference. The leaves motherboard (which I doubt and can replace) and CPU (which just might be changable). Any ideas? Is there any hope for this laptop? I'm rather fond of it and I'd have a hard time replacing it with anything near as nice.

• Weird glitches on Intel iGPU

  I have a weird problem that I can't manage to describe in one word, so I'm having trouble searching for a solution. My monitors sometimes go black for a tenth of a second. Other times, they show the image shifted a few centimeters to the left or to the right. This happens on both of my monitors, but not necessarily at the same time. I would say it happens about once a minute, unless under heavy load, in which case it can happen every second or so. Interestingly, heavy CPU/memory usage can also cause this, not just heavy GPU usage. This only happens when they are both at 1920x1080, not when one of them, or both, are at a lower resolution. It also happens when they are in mirrored mode instead of extended desktop mode. My GPU is obviously not at full clock speed most of the time: this happens at 350 MHz as well as at 1200 MHz. So it doesn't seem like a matter of too little performance. I'm not seeing any traditional artefacts, even when I use MSI Kombustor, only this kind of full-screen glitches. CPU stressing software isn't reporting any issues either. I'm thinking maybe the connection between my CPU and my PCH isn't fast enough, but I can't find anyone with the same problem to confirm that. I'd rather not invest in a discrete GPU without being certain it will fix something. Does anyone know how to search for this, or even better, does anyone have a solution? My full specs are below. • External Dell Display doesn't work with MacBook Pro (2011) after Thunderbolt Firmware Update (1.0 and 1.2)

  Today two Thunderbolt Firmware Updates (1.0 and 1.2) became available for my MacBook Pro (Early 2011). After installing both, my external monitor, a Dell U2713HM, does no longer work. The system detects the display, but the display shows only black. An Apple Thunderbolt display works fine and a MacBook Air can use the Dell monitor without problems. My MacBook Pro can use the Dell monitor just fine when I boot from a USB stick. Therefore, clearly the Thunderbolt Firmware Update seems to be the problem. Does anyone have the same problem? Any solutions or workarounds? I guess there is no way to remove a Thunderbolt Firmware Update once it's installed, right? Update 24.10.2013: Is there no one else with this problem? In the meantime I tried three different cables – none worked. My colleague with the same generation MacBook Pro also can't use my display after installing the firmware update. All colleagues with MacBook Airs and newer MacBook Pros (all didn't receive the firmware update) can use the display. Update 29.10.2013: Wow, ok today my new MacBook Pro Retina 13' (Late 2013) arrived. Guess what, I cannot use the display with it. Only HDMI works – not with the full resolution.

• Win 8.1 Hyper-v Full Screen and VPN problems

  I need to connect to my office using Cisco VPN software (RSA). Once connected all my internet traffic goes through the employer's VPN and this prevents me from listening to spotify. As a way around this I created a Win 2012 VM that I run in hyper-v from my Windows 8.1 Client. First I RDP to the VM, then I connect to the VPN. This forces the RDP session between my host laptop and the VM to close. I then open the hyper-v manager and double-click my VM to get a connection back (not great because I don't get the use of copy & paste this way). Previously when I opened my VM this way I would have full screen. I'm using a 1920x1080 monitor. Today when I re-open my connection to the VM it is displayed in a window that uses maybe 75% of the full screen. I have tried the menu option View\Full Screen Mode only centres the screen and apply black borders around the outside. Could anyone please suggest how I may solve the VPN or Full Screen problems? • Single Sign On 802.1x Wireless - saying “Connecting to <SSID>”, hangs for 10 seconds, fails with “Unable to connect to <SSID>, Logging on…”.

  We are implementing WiFi on Windows 7 machines in our corporate environment. Machines should be able to log into the domain by WiFi as the Machine (Pre-Logon), and as the User (Post-Logon). We have everything working correctly except for 2 things: 1) Sometimes the login scripts don't run 2) The user VLAN is sometimes different than the machine vlan, and no DHCP renew occurs after user logon. I am clear that both these problems should be fixable by using the "Single Sign On" Option under the 802.1x Wireless Vista GPO, and setting the wireless to connect immediately before user logon and also by enabling "This network uses different VLAN for authentication with machine and user credentials" If I enable these GPO settings in a lab, the computer does authenticate & gets WIFI before the user logs on, so when the login box is displayed, it says “Windows will try to connect to ”, even though it is already connected (which should be ok?). Enter the user credentials and it goes to a screen saying “Connecting to ”, hangs for 10 seconds, fails with “Unable to connect to , Logging on…”. Desktop fires up and then the user re-authenticates with no problem as himself instead of the machine, but by that point, we defeat the point of the WiFi SSO “before user logon”. Also by that point, no DHCP renew seems to occur, and the user is still stuck with the wrong IP address for the new VLAN. When the “Connecting to ” screen comes up, there’s no indication on the AP or the Radius server that anything whatsoever is happening after credentials are entered until after the domain logon. Also with this policy enabled, sometimes windows hangs on a black screen indefinitely until I disable the Wireless NIC, so something is knackered for sure. What have I missed? Suggestions are much appreciated... /P

• How to diagnose issue between mobo, RAID, and SSD cache drive? [migrated]

  Background This issue is happening on my custom-built desktop. Relevant specs: Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO Utilizing Intel RST technology (application that uses unused SSD as cache) Processor: Intel core i7-2600k (not overclocked) HDDs: RAID1 of 2x Seagate Barracuda 1TB (ST31000524AS) (RAID performed via z68 chipset) Machine has run fine for ~1 year with no issues, and has been well-maintained (dust, etc.) What Happened Random Freezing issues -- intermittent Looked at the RST application screen to see that the acceleration cache was listed as "unavailable" -- recommended that I power down and reconnect the drive. Reconnected the drive to no avail. Attempted to move the drive to another SATA port. Acceleration option disappeared from RST software. Now, the freeze happens whenever loading something particularly data-driven (a video, a game, etc.) Steps Attempted Reconnected the drive to no avail. Updated Intel RST software to v. 11.6.0.1030 to see if that made a difference. Attempted to move the drive to another SATA port. Acceleration option disappeared from RST software. Connected the drive as its own volume. Formatted it, ran disk check errors -- all seems fine. Reconnected the drive and selected it again as the cache drive. Now, what happens when there is a freeze: Machine freezes I am unable to perform any command Screen then goes black I hit the reset button During boot, all drives show as "Disabled" and I am told no volume can be found I then hit the reset button (or power off/on) again. Either the next time (or sometimes after repeating this once more), the metadata cache is reconstructed and the system boots fine, showing the SSD as a cache. Question I believe this is an issue with the SSD itself, but how can I be sure since connecting it separately appeared to show no problems? I want to make sure it's not an issue with the motherboard, SATA ports, etc.

• What is the max connections via remote desktop for a small server?

  I have a small server running MS Server 2012. The CPU is a Xeon E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz, 4 Cores, 8 Logical Processors, 8 GB RAM. Main HD is a Samsung 840, and the big storage is a 4 disk WD Black Raid 10 Array in a Synology NAS enclusure. My question is: given this hardware, approximately how many users can the system support via "Remote Desktop Connection"? Assume there are no licensing limits. These are not admin users. I know there is a two admin limit. This boils down to: What resources does one remote connection require? RAM? % of the CPU? Networking bandwidth? I guess the base case would be for a conection where the user is inactive or simply browsing cnn. Once you know this, you know how many you could fit on the machine before something is maxed-out. In reality, users would be mostly on Excel (multi-MB spreadsheets). I know the approx. resources currently required by each copy of Excel.

• PC won't boot from IDE HDD when SATA data drive connected

  I have an old Pentium 4 system running XP. The machine is set up as an HTPC. It was set up and running well with 1 SATA drive as a boot drive, another SATA drive to store TV recordings, and an IDE drive to store more recordings. Last week the original boot drive (a SATA drive) failed. The BIOS would no longer recognize it. I had a disused IDE drive hanging around that was large enough for the OS, so I reformatted it and installed XP on it. Now the system will only boot if I do not connect the remaining healthy SATA data drive. All three drives are recognized by the BIOS, and I have set the boot order so that the IDE drive with XP on it has top priority, but after the BIOS recognizes the drives, etc. I just get a black screen. I know the SATA drive is functional, because if I hot plug the drive AFTER the system is booted (I know I'm not supposed to do this), I can go into the control panels and mount the drive, and see all the files and folders on it in Windows Explorer. Any suggestions on what is going on and how to fix it? Many thanks.

  Please please help! I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate on same hard drive on D Drive on my laptop and the previous Windows 7 Enterprise which was installed on C Drive is not booting up now. When I turn on my laptop, I see two Windows 7 on the screen, when I select newer one, it starts, but when I select older one which is Enterprise edition, system won't start and I get the DOS black screen with this error message: Windows Boot Manager Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." Click "repair your computer." Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. I notice that when I run the newer OS installed, the previous OS's drive (Which is D: now instead of C:) has become unusable and when I double click it, it asks me to format the drive. The data, that I had on my D Drive (Which is now C Drive for new OS), I had copied it to a network path and it is available. It was containing Windows 7 Users folder which I copied at that time when installing new windows. I have copied that Users folder again to the new OS's C Drive thinking it would run again, but of no use. Please please please...if someone can help...It is extremely required for me.   My current PC is about four years old, although I have made upgrades to it throughout its existence. The current specs are: (old) Intel Pentium D 2.80Ghz (32K L1 / 2M L2), Gigabyte 945GCMX-S2 motherboard (old) 2.5GB DDR2 (slot0: 512MB @ 533Mhz; slot1: 2GB @ 667Mhz) (new) HIS Radeon HD 4670 - I think this is limited by the motherboard not supporting PCIe 2.0 (?) (old) WD Caviar 160GB - pretty slow (new) WD Caviar Black 640GB (if any more specs are relevant, let me know and I'll add them) Now, on to my question. I've been having performance issues lately, both in video games and in intensive applications. A couple of examples: Android application development (running Eclipse and the Android emulator) is painfully slow (on Linux). I only realized this when, at my new job as an Android dev, both tools are MUCH quicker. (I'm not sure what CPU I have there) The guys at my new job got me NFS Hot Pursuit, in which I barely get like 5-10FPS, even with graphics options turned all the way down My guess is that the bottleneck in my system is my CPU, so I'm thinking of upgrading to a Quad Core i5 + new motherboard + 4GB DDR3 (or more, 'cause I know you'll all jump and say 8GB minimum). Now: Is that a good idea? Is my CPU really a bottleneck, or is the whole system too old and I should replace it? I run Windows 7 on the old, 160GB HDD (which is on IDE, by the way). Could this slow down games as well? Should I get a new drive for Windows if I want to play new games? I know nothing about power supplies. Could that be a problem / will it be a problem if I upgrade to an i5? How come DiRT2 works on full graphics settings (pretty amazing graphics by the way) and NFS Hot Pursuit pulls only 5-10FPS?

  I have currently set up my web application on Amazon EC2 server. As a well known fact sending email from EC2 has a problem. As a cheap and long lasting solution instead of using "authsmtp" is it possible to rent a server and use it as a Mail Server? I am currently looking for cheap hosting which will give me root access so that it can be configured and used as a relayhost. I am curently using Postfix as MTA. Has any one implemented this before? I am curious about its feasibility of this solution. I guess common requirements are: 1: Dedicated IP which is not black listed. 2: Open relay( open to my Server only) Any Tips for Header configurations to keep the mails out of spam folder. This is like exactly cloning authsmtp for personal use. Any suggestions for other Mail Server software instead of Postfix? Another problem is Reverse DNS for this server. Should PTR entry be present if a server is used as a relayhost?

• How can I get write permission for the Web (Inetpub) directory on a new Win 7 machine?

  I mirror my Web site on my laptop, and am trying to move the mirror site to a new laptop. I copied the files to the Inetpub directory, and can view them perfectly, but they are read-only (the check-mark is grey, not black), and I cannot change the permission. When I un-check the read-only attribute on the Inetpub directory, and click "apply" it displays a dialog box stating that I need administrative permission to change the attributes. (I am logged in as an administrator). When I click "continue," it pops up another dialog box saying access is denied to the attributes of the file: c:\inetpub\custerr\en-us\500-100.asp That dialog box has an "ignore" button, and if I click that, it appears to work through the directory tree setting the permissions. It leaves all of the files (leafs) set to "read-write," but the directories remain "read only." I am using 64-bit Windows 7. I stopped the IIS service while doing all of this. Might it have something to do with the fact that I copied the files from a different machine in the workgroup (my old laptop)?

• Can I use HP Recovery Discs for a different hard drive capacity and make?

  About two years ago I created HP Recovery Discs (3 of them). Now my hard drive has crashed and new one is still a week from delivery. I was reading up on how to reinstall the genuine OS using the Recovery Discs as i was not given any Windows 7 installation discs. I did my bit of research after getting answers from the community on what these discs do and found out on other sites that people experience issues when recovering their OS from the disc. Especially when they change the make or capacity of the harddrive. Unfortunately I had to change the make as the hard drive that came built in has gone out of production. This question is just a part of my checklist to avoid problems when recovering the OS. I have: HP DV4-2126TX (available only in India I guess) I had: Seagate Momentus 320 GB I ordered: Western Digital Scorpio Black 500 GB Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit Is there a possibility to encounter any problems due to the changed capacity and make? I only want my genuine OS and drivers – not my data. I was told that Disc 1 contained the OS and drivers, and the rest of the discs contained data. I couldn't verify that.

Yesterday a hard drive in our Dell Poweredge 2900 server failed and the RAID array didn't degrade gracefully, so I called Dell (Server still under warranty) and got an engineer to work though the RAID issues with me. He was a nice guy but didn't do too much. We tried to put the RAID in a state where it was bootable and even though we only lost one disk there are still issues with the server. Once we got the server to boot there was an error message saying that the logonui.exe was corrupted and we needed to run chkdsk. I clicked through the error messages and the login screen never came up. So I power cycled the server and it chkdsk automatically but the login screen didn't appear. I tried safe mode, no difference there either. So the issues I am currently having are: 1) The server boots up, the loading windows screen comes up then it dumps me into a black screen where I can only see my mouse cursor. Ctrl+Esc doesn't work Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work 2) Some of the services come up: DHCP, DNS, DFS, and Print come up 3) The exchange information store and transport service don't start - I tried using mmc to connect to services.msc on the computer and start them but they throw an error message of "Can't start because group or dependency failed" Has anyone had a problem like this? Can anyone offer some guidance? Thanks a bunch!

• 64-bit Windows 7 gets stuck on logo screen on bootup

  I've had a PC running Windows 7 in my office which I'm not using at the moment (cause I'm working elsewhere as a consultant atm), I'm only accessing the PC using Team Viewer (http://www.teamviewer.com/) which means the PC has been running for quite some time now. I've restarted it maybe twice a week though. A few days ago I couldn't access it using Team Viewer and when I got to the office the screen was black with only the mouse pointer showing. The PC has four hard disks, three of them (all 1Tb) is using RAID 5. This is what I've done so far: I reboot and everything seems to load correctly. I get to a screen that gives me two choices - boot Windows normally or perform a startup repair. Choosing to boot Windows only gets me to the Windows 7 logo screen which only animates over and over again. Choosing to repair gets me to the repair screen that "checks for problems" and then it gets stuck on the "Attempting repairs..."-screen (I let it run for about 24 hours before giving up). What is the next step to take? I don't have any backups and no system restore points saved. I can access files and folders through a terminal window using a Windows 7 DVD so I guess nothing is lost yet... Please help me, thanks!

• Windows 8 install from USB freezes

  I'm trying to install Windows 8 from an 8GB Kingston Data Traveler. I'm currently using the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool to put the iso into the flash drive. It copies the files, but in the end it says it 'had a problem with bootsect' and could not make the flash drive bootable. This seems to be because my current system is Windows 7 32bits, and the bootsect.exe in the ISO is a 64-bit executable. Then I downloaded the 32-bit bootsect.exe and made the drive bootable by running: bootsect /nt60 E: /mbr Then I restarted and managed to boot via the flash drive, but now everything is very slow. It takes about two minutes for the initial black screen with the Windows logo and the spinner go away, then it goes to a purple-ish blank screen that stays on for about five more minutes and then it finally shows a dialog asking for the installation, date/time and keyboard languages. I input then, click "Install Now" and it takes about three more minutes with a "Setup is starting" screen. After that, the PC apparently reboots, the CPU fan speeds up considerably, and there's no video and nothing more happens even after more than ten minutes. What is happening? I already tried using another USB port and even installing from a Samsung G3 Station 2TB external hard disk, but the same thing happens. The file transfer speed to the Kingston drive was about only 3 megabytes per second.

• Ubuntu 11.04 fresh install - "Input signal out of range" or "Mode not supported..."

  I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 using a CD .iso. Installation went fine. Upon completion I rebooted and after a second or two I got a black screen with the message "Input signal out of range". And there it sits... Read a few things about how this could be related to screen resolution, refresh rate, etc. For the heck of it I tried a different monitor. The result is the same but the message provides some clues - "Mode not supported - H:92.7kHz, V:58.3Hz" (the latter is Hz; not kHz). So my thought is that I should probably be able to use the 11.04 install disc to "Try out Ubuntu", find and edit some file that was created by the install with the correct values. Problem is, I am not too sure what I am supposed to edit. Looked at the xorg.conf file but this is so minimal at this point I am not sure it is where I want to go. By the way, the monitor is an I-Inc ix191a. Anyone have any ideas on how to get around this?

• Repair Windows 2008 boot

  I have been caught in a loop where I can't boot up Windows Server 2008. When the OS starts to boot I am presented two options: Launch Startup Repair (recommended) Start Windows Normally No matter what option is chosen I end up with a black screen stating "Windows is loading files..." which takes approx 15 minutes until "System Recovery" is started. I try to run the "Startup Repair" but it reports the following error: Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline Problem Signature 01: 0.0.0.0 Problem Signature 02: 0.0.0.0 Problem Signature 03: unknown OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033 Actually no matter what other options I would try in the System Recovery they would also report some kind of error. Some other logging I have been able to extract: Diagnosis and repair details: Number of repair attempts: 1 Session details System Disk = Windows directory = AutoChk Run = 0 Number of root causes = 1 Test Performed: Name: System disk test Result: Completed successfully. Error code = 0x0 Root cause found: A hard disk could not be found. If a hard disk is installed, it is not responding. So it is actually stating that Harddisk could not be found... which to me seems to be a bit contradictious since the System Recovery just loaded all files from the hard disk it now states it cannot find. Any ideas on what other options I have?
