• Installed Ubuntu 11.10, getting hard disk health warnings

  I'm getting hard disk health problem warnings... When I click the "examine" button the disk utility pops up. None of my drives are reporting any major issues, and the very first drive doesn't even have a SMART button. I don't really care if one of the drives is crashing, I've got everything backed up, but I just want to know how to stop these god forsaken message boxes from popping up randomly. I have already gone into the Disk Utility and checked "do not notify me if this drive is failing" on all of them except the one that doesn't have the SMART button. I've googled about as much as I can for one day.

• Creating a list based on a column

  I need to create a dropdown list in sheet A based on the values in sheet B in column A. I clicked on the A column in B sheet and named it as Models. Then I clicked on the cell in sheet A where I wanted the list to be and selected Data -> Data validation -> Data validation. In the Settings page I selected List in the Allow section, checked Ignore blank and In-cell dropdown. In the Source section I inserted =Models. This way I get all the right values plus a lot of blank values. How do I prevent the blank lines from appearing in the list?

• A Duplicate name exists on the network

  Recently we changed out office IT structure from having a dedicated server to be the DC, a dedicated server for the exchange etc... (Each running Windows Server 2003 R2) Now we have a single server running Windows SBS 2008 and created a new domain (with a different domain name) We then changed every PC so it connected to the new domain and renamed every PC with a new naming structure. After I had done this, we were getting several PCs that would get the following message just before the login screen (Alt+Ctrl+Del Screen) A Duplicate name exists on the network I have checked the ADUC and have removed the trouble PCs from the list and renamed each PC and changed the SID before connecting back onto the domain but still getting this message. I have tried everything that i can think of but still getting the problem. Any help would be greatly appreticated.

• MySQL keeps crashing due to bug

  So about a week ago, I finally figured out what was causing my server to continually crash. After reviewing my mysqld.log I keep seeing this same error, 101210 5:04:32 [Warning] option 'max_join_size': unsigned value 18446744073709551615 adjusted to 4294967295 Here is a link to the bug report, http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=35346 someone recommend that you set the max_join_size vaule in my.cnf to 4M, and I did. I assumed this fixed the issue, and it was working for about a week with no issues until today... I checked MySQL and the same error is now back, 101216 06:35:25 mysqld restarted 101216 6:38:15 [Warning] option 'max_join_size': unsigned value 18446744073709551615 adjusted to 4294967295 101216 6:38:15 [Warning] option 'max_join_size': unsigned value 18446744073709551615 adjusted to 4294967295 101216 06:40:42 mysqld ended Anyone know how I can really fix this issue?   A friend of mine just told me that he can't send mails to accounts on one of my servers via the SMTP server provided by his ISP. The error message in the bounce he gets reads: Hi. This is the qmail-send program at aon.at. I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out. <[email protected]>: CNAME lookup failed temporarily. (#4.4.3) I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too long. Any ideas what could be the reason for this? I have double-checked the DNS records for my domain, but they seem perfectly fine, and from any other mail servers I tested, delivery works flawlessly…

• Web application access different between Domain Name and IP

  in our office, we have a web application running. When we access the application by the domain name, http://server.domain.com/application/name it will display the current version of application. However, when we go by the IP address, http://192.168.1.111/application/name it will display the old version of that application. One thing is that we can access that application either by http://server.domain.com/ (it will be redirected to the long URL automatically) or http://server.domain.com/application/name when we are using domain name. But only accessible via the exact URL when we use IP address. Why is it showing the old version and how can it be corrected? It is running JRun4, Apache on Red hat. I've checked in httpd.conf a bit but could not find any. Please advice what should be done to display the same (updated version) when we access using domain name or IP address. Thank you.

• Trying to mount an NFS directory from a Mac with another user

  I have a username on an ubuntu server, lets call it user a. I want to mount a directory from that server to my Mac, on which I have another username, lets call it user b. My problem is that, after I mount the directory (using the disk utility app) I can view files on the server but can't modify or create new files on it. I checked, and if I change the permissions of the server directory so that its open to everyone (chmod 777), I can write to it. So what I need to know, is how can I specify the username and password in the NFS client when setting up the mount? That is, I want to specify that I'm trying to log in as user a to the server.

• Git push on localhost with htaccess

  I am looking into setting up a remote git repo. To start with I have created it on my Windows machine using xampp following this guide. All works fine except when I try to add some security, as per step 6 of the guide (for when I migrate it to my main web server). I have added passwords by using passwd and adding htaccess to the htdocs folder. This works fine (I have checked in my web browser), but when I try and push I get prompted for my password the it fails with a error (code 22). $ git push origin master Password for 'http://git@localhost': error: Cannot access URL http://git@localhost/s.git/, return code 22 fatal: git-http-push failed Any ideas?

• Finding documentation for /etc/**/*.dpkg-*

  During upgrades, files with these extensions appear in /etc and its subdirectories. I gather that *.dpkg-dist contains the file that was distributed with the currently-installed version of a package, and *.dpkg-new contains the version from the version being installed, however I'd like to see the docs to be sure that I'm getting it right. Also there are occasionally other similarly named files, eg *.dpkg-original, and I'd like to be able to read up on these. I've checked /usr/share/doc/dpkg for documentation on this, and come up empty; there's no dpkg-doc package; Google doesn't have anything except unanswered questions. Can someone point me to the documentation for this aspect of debian package management?

As i made full website in java(JSP + Servlet + mysql + Node.js), its been expensive to host. So i thought that why not to host on own server so that i will be fully dependent on my resources, not on any one else. And i know, in future i need to pay more and more to the other hosting company(because of uploading images and number of incoming users). So my question is, On initial stage what kind of hardware i will required. What can be the cost of that hardware? I already have 12MBPS broadband connection, will it be sufficient? It has static IP Address as well.

• Is GPU active when there are not any monitors?

  Does GPU render anything when there is no monitor plugged in? Today I turned my old PC into some kind of a "server" which means that I want it running 24/7. I don't need any display (I will operate through ssh) so when everything was set up I removed my monitor. After a hour I checked my graphic card's cooling system and it was still hot. My graphic card is GeForce 8600 (with DVI connector), OS is Debian Linux. What is the best solution in this situation (standalone server) if GPU is active and I don't want it to waste power?

• Netbeans automatically changes the file owner when updating files

  We use Netbeans IDE 7.2 to edit our PHP files. In the Run Configuration it is configured as Remote Web Site to automatically save the changes on our web server (Centos OS 6.3). The problem is that every time it is updating the files the owner of the file is changed from apache:apache to userThatUploadedTheFile:users. This causes us problems with SOAP cache files that are configured with apache:apache ownership, and we need to manually chownit back to apache:apache. We've checked the "Preserve Remote File Permissions" checkbox, so the permissions are not changed, only the owner. Is there any solution to preserve the ownership ?

• Windows Server 2008 Enterprise. Incorrect password on screensaver

  First some software details: Thin client: Wyse C10LE Citrix - Windows Terminal Services - Windows Server 2008 Enterprise desktop I have a user with a very strange problem. When he locks his screen with Win+L, Windows claims he's entering wrong password when he tries to log back in. The only solution is to hard reboot the WYSE, and log back in. This reboot doesn't kill his Windows session. I've checked for errors in keyboard settings (wrong layout etc), nothing found. I suspect errors in his profile/errors in AD. No other users in the domain has this problem. EDIT: Sorry, it's NOT Win R2. Plain Windows Sever 2008

• PC reboots instead of shutting down, no software problem. What could be the cause?

  Hi, first of all: I'm not sure if superuser is the right site for my question and google didn't help. I have a pc here that prefers rebooting to shuting down. Everytime I try to shut the pc down it reboots, however it is possible to turn the pc off by pressing the power button. The problem is not windows-specific, the Ubuntu LiveCD does exactly the same that's why I said that it is no software problem. I checked wake on LAN, it is disabled and I also resetted the BIOS settings to factory default. That might not mean that it can't be a BIOS problem but I don't know what else to try here. I did not check any hardware yet but nothing exploded so far. I don't know what could have caused this behaviour as it is not my PC. The Mainboard is a ASUS P5Q-E P45.

• Windows xp keeps rebooting itself every morning at 8am?

  Hi, I've got windows xp sp3. It seems to restart itself every morning at 8am (judging by the windows logs, I can see all apps log a startup at 8am every day). Whenever I get to the machine in the morning (around 9 am) I see it's rebooted. I've checked that automatic updates are off, and that the power management settings are set to "always on". I'm not sure what else could be causing the machine to reboot, not sure where to start looking. Any ideas? • Is there a way to get a shared spreadsheet to update without closing and reopening?

  Using Excel 2010, I have a spreadsheet that is used by 3 different people at any one time. But if one person has the spreadsheet open on there PC the other people can only view it as read only. I have since shared the workbook and put the spreadsheet on a shared network drive and now they can all view the spreadsheet at the same time and edit it at the same time. The problem is that nobody can see the changes that the other users have made unless the close out of the spreadsheet and open it up again to view the changes. I have checked the settings of the shared workbook and on the advanced tab have tick the option that updates the information every 5 minutes but the information does not update until you close out and open the spreadsheet back up again. How can I fix this problem?

• Grub2 menu after vmware gust customization

  Hi, I have ubuntu 9.10 desktop VMware VM with the default grub2 installed. There is some weird problem with this VM. When you clone this vm and have a customization script run, the cloned machine crashes at first boot (VMware does not officially suport customizaing Ubuntu newer than 8.04). After the creash the Grub boot menu is displayed but there is not time out. I checked /boot/grub/grub.cfg and it does indeed show a timeout of 10 seconds. Nothing happens till I select an option with the keyboard. The second time the Ubuntu loads, it does not crash. My question is, how do I make the grub menu timeout in that case? Thanks.

• HDDs randomly falling off raid

  I really need help on this it's Saturday long weekend.No customer service help:( .I recently build new server/light duty desktop.Main purpose is only file sharing.Raid configuration :Adaptec 6805 ,8x 3TB HDD WD Red,Intel RES2SV240 expander,Raid 6,set in Intel mobo DZ 77GA-70K.I upgraded firmwares, but I'm having strange problem. During Build Verify segment 7 got missing.I just reinsert drive into hot swap bay and it started to rebuild Array.After rebuild was done another segments 0 and 5 gone missing while build/verify.I reinserted drives and now I'm praying that raid is going to rebuild successfully from remaining 6 drives,because i already transfer some data on it(I know it was bad idea).I checked S.M.A.R.T on missing drives , it only says link failure and aborted commands on one of them.No Errors on HDDs.Connections and cables are good.I added 2 fans blowing on RAID controller because it was getting too hot, so I guess overheating shouldn't be issue.What can be possibly wrong? • Avoid putty ssh terminal to crash when disconnecting from server

  I'm connecting via ssh to a remote 'live' server where i have some bash scripts automated via the crontab, when an error happens in some of the automation scripts within the server, the connection to the server is killed, this is fine to me, but the problem is that Putty closes the entire window, which is a behavior i don't want. I have checked all around the web, unfortunately the putty site does not have a support page, but nothing. Under putty's option i have tried all the menus expanding all options, but still i cant find the right one, i would expect it to be under Windowbehaviour Do you have an advice? Thx

• Error sysprepping Windows 8 Enterprise 90-day trial

  I am using the Windows 8 Enterprise 90-day trial to evaluate the latest version of Windows for a private school. The way I work is that I use sysprep to prepare an generalized image, then I clone it to the school's computers. When I follow the instructions and try sysprep on my installation of Windows 8 in VirtualBox, sysprep thinks briefly and gives me an error message: Fatal error occurred while trying to sysprep the machine. Once I acknowledge it, sysprep closes. I checked the Windows Event Log, and there's nothing there that I could see. I also followed some instructions to cure this problem, but nothing changed. The error remains. My best guess is that the 90-day trial prohibits the use of sysprep, but I can't be sure. It might also be my use of VirtualBox, or who-knows-what. Has anyone had success with this, or encountered the same issue on real hardware?

• Very Dark Windows 7 Screen

  My Gateway laptop -Windows 7- screen became too dark a few days ago after I finished installing Windows automatic update. I can see nothing unless I use a flashlight. Windows login screen is the only bright screen for few seconds. What should I do to resolve this issue? I checked power-saving/ Power Options settings and rebooting in Safe Mode. I tried to lower the refresh rate but it did not allow me. The laptop adapter type is ATI Radeon Xpress series. I calibrated display color. I uninstalled and reinstalled the adapter. I tried to update the driver but the driver is up to-date. Any help would be appreciated.

• Download web server structure with empty files

  I want to make a mirror of a Web server, but downloading the actual files will take too long. So I thought of having just the directory and file structure, and when I need the actual contents of the file, I can download just that file. I have tried wget --spider URL and in a short time it has created in my local disk the directory structure with no files. But I've checked all of wget's or curl's switches and there is nothing like what I need. Can this be done with wget, curl or any other tool?

• Is there a way to expose ports when the three default firewalls were disabled

  I think I disabled the three firewalls that come with FreeBSD (just for experimentation purposes). I checked the modules that load with the kernel (using "kldstat"). The only modules that load are: kernel -- ng_socket.ko, netgraph.ko, ng_mppc.ko and rc4.ko). I'd like to know what module is still blocking my ports now. After removing all firewall options from the rc.file and re-compiling the kernel without the pf option (or any firewall for that matter), I can't still open ports freely. How does it work exactly? • How to force "Windows Explorer" to open new folders in the same window

  I have been searching for an answer to this question for a very long time. I have checked the "open folders in the same window" radio button in the general tab of folder options. I have also been told to uncheck the launch as seperate processes button in the view tab of folder options. I'm thinking some how this must be a registry issue. Anyone know a registry hack that will fix this problem and force windows explorer to open folders in the same window. I'm sick to death of having so many windows open. Im running Windows 7 Ultimate Beta 7100.

• External disk not working with Mac OS X 10.5

  Hi: My OS is 10.5.7. I have an external hard disk, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), connected to my Mac machine through USB cable. I have used it for a while, but now it is not working. Error showed in /var/log/system.log. USBF: 2521.384 AppleUSBEHCI[0xa515800]::Found a transaction which hasn't moved in 5 seconds on bus 0xfd, timing out! (Addr: 0, EP: 0) ..... ...... kernel[0]: USBF: 2588.616 [0xa6baa00] The IOUSBFamily was not able to enumerate a device. Luckily, in my work place there is a Mac with OS 10.4, so I had plugged the disk into the 10.4 machine and it worked!!! I did checked "System Profiler" on both machines (10.5, 10.4). Under usb section, for 10.5 it shows USBEHCI, under 10.4, it shows USBOHCI. I am not a expert on USB Device , can any one tell me why 10.5 cause the problem. it was worked under 10.5
