• Is Version control with GIT useful to work in small projects fon an individual developer? [closed]

  I work as website developer. I develop with Drupal CSM. I have a drupal base installation which has some settings which are sort of default for all my proyects. This drupal installation is my drupal-base folder Every time I start a new project I just duplicate the `drupal-base- folder and start coding the new features I need for the new proyect. The problem is that sometimes I work in more than one projects at the same time and I get a new feature in one of the project that I'd like to commit to my drupal base installation and also to the other projects. Then keeping the sync of all this is nightmare. I thought that Version Control with GIT could help me with this and I went into a tutorial about it. But now I'm not sure if this will be usefull for me. Then my question is: I think that GIT is just usefull for big projects where a team is working all together in the same files. But it is not usefull to work in small and individual projects. Am I right?

• Ideal laptop specs for a Computer Science Masters student? [closed]

  I have a HP pavillion core 2 duo 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and it is painful to use this machine for any kind of coding. Eclipse (especially Juno) literally takes 5 minutes to load. And even after that, everything is lagy. Apart from school stuff, I also use my computer as a television. I watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube etc in 720p, and this laptop gets hot as hell and the fans are loud enough to wake somebody up from deep sleep. I DON'T use my laptop for Gaming or Video/Photo Editing. I'm looking to buy a new laptop (in which most widely used IDEs would work smoothly and playing hi-def videos wouldn't be too much for the machine to handle) any suggestions (on hardware specs) would be greatly appreciated. • How do I configure multiple domain names on my IIS server? [closed]

  We have a few websites that we are running on one instance of IIS that need to be mapped for each of their domain names. For example. Site A has the domain name coolness.com Site B has the domain name 6to8Weeks.com Site C has the domain name PhatTech.com When I look at the "Web Site Identification" section of the IIS configuration window, I notice that I can specify an IP address and port, but if I click the Advanced button, I can also configure the site based on host header values as well. How do I configure each site in IIS? Ideally I would like them to all be able to listen to port 80, so I don't have weird URLs, but I'm not sure if I do this using headers, IP addresses, both, or something else.

• How should I expand Jenkins to help me release? [closed]

  Pushing new Sparkle releases of our internal apps is a pain. I have to make the build, make the release notes file, sign the .zip with the private key, and add a new entry to the appcast file tying everything together. I'd love it if Jenkins could help: use the commit messages for the release notes, and automatically do the rest of it. Should I be looking at writing a new Jenkins plugin, or using shell scripting, or is there something already that will do what I want? (A quick Google didn't find anything.)

• How quickly to leave contract-to-hire gig where you don't want to be hired? [closed]

  So you move to a big new city with tons of software development opportunity, having taken a six month contract-to-hire job. The company treats you really well and has a good team and work environment. However, the recruiter assured you when offering the gig that it would be a good position in which you can advance your learning from more senior developers (a primary concern of yours) but you're starting to realize that a job recruiter isn't going to understand that the team in question isn't very up on modern software practices (you start to sympathize with this guy and read his post over and over again: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1586166/career-killer-nhibernate-oop-design-patterns-domain-driven-design-test-driv) and that much of the company's software is very old and very very poorly architected, and the company (like so many others) seems to be only concerned with continually extending the software without investing in any structural improvements. You're absolutely dismayed at how long it takes your team (including) to fulfill simple feature requests (maybe 500-1000% longer than with better designed software that you've worked on in the past), but no one else there seems to think anything of it. You find that the work and the company's business are intensely uninteresting to you, but due to the convoluted design of their various software systems, fulfilling the work will require as much mental engagement as any other development position. You feel a bit naive about not having asked the right questions during your interview process, and for not having anticipated that your team at your former podunk company might possibly be light-years ahead of any team in Big Shiny City, but you know you don't want to stay at this place, and (were it not for your personal, after-hours studying and personal programming efforts) fear that you might actually give a worse interview after completing your 6 months than you did when you started at the place. You read about how hard of a time local companies are having filling their positions with qualified software development candidates. You read all sorts of fabulous sounding job postings online and feel like you're really missing out. In spite of the comfortable environment you feel like you would willingly accept a somewhat more demanding or aggressive lifestyle to feel like you are learning and progressing and producing something meaningful. My questions are: how quickly do you leave and how do you go about giving a polite reason for departing? The contract is written to allow them to "can" you and to allow you to leave with 2 weeks notice. Do you ethically owe the 6 months? Upon taking the position, the company told you they were not interested in candidates who were intending to only stay for 6 months and then leave (you were not intending to bail after 6 months, at that time), so perhaps they might be fine if you split now, knowing that you don't want to stick around for the full time hire?

• Any recommendations for a domain buying negotiating service? [closed]

  The best domain for my niche and related is owned by a guy in San Fransisco, and I want to buy the domain from him but I don't want to deal with him directly (even though he has contacted me in the past). I need to find an intermediary company that can handle the negotiation for me. I don't expect to have to pay much since the guy has been squatting on it for more than 15 years and according to the Internet Wayback Machine it has never actually been used for anything at all - he has never added any value to it. It kind of irritates me that such a good domain has been sitting in this guy's closet gather dust for 15 years. I know that GoDaddy has a domain buying negotiating service (and the domain is registered through them, which may make it easier), but I really, really do not want to do business with GoDaddy if I don't have too. Do any of you know of other firms that deal with this sort of thing?

• Should a new programmer nowadays start with C/C++ or OOP language? [closed]

  I've been a programmer for 15+ years. In my time, we all started with C or C++ and then moved to C# or Java. At that time it was a usual practice. Now, my brother wants to follow my steps and I am not sure what advice to give him. So, I am asking the community for an opinion. Should nowadays new programmer with zero programming knowledge start with functional languages (C, C++, etc.) or he should start directly with OOP languages (Java, C#, etc.)? The reply should be considered in the context of my brother's future assignments. He will mainly work on Java mobile applications as well as ASP.NET web apps. He will have to touch with desktop apps, low level programming, drivers, etc. This is the reason I am not sure if he should ever need to learn functional languages.

• Where do you get new software ideas from? [closed]

  The world of software creation is very competitive. I've heard it said to be successful you need to be the first one with the idea. Everyone knows how Bill Gates created IBM DOS on one machine while simultaneously building MS-DOS on another machine (and we all know how that turned out). In order to be the first to come up with a new software product, where do you go looking for fresh ideas? Update 06/26/13: Reworded this question in an attempt to get it reopened. Bill Gates developed MS-DOS at the same time he was hired to develop IBM DOS. As a programming community, we would all gain by understanding how to think up great ideas for software. As programmer we tend to get stuck in our thinking... it's refreshing to hear how fellow programmers busted out and came up with their ideas. It's not very likely that we will have an MS-DOS opportunity like Bill Gates. Please vote to reopen.

• Do I expect too much work from an employer? [closed]

  I recently switched jobs because I was not challenged enough, the work would come in waves, and I HATED the people I worked with. I am a recent college grad, May 2009, and based off the 3 internships I had, and 2 full time jobs I obtained, I am finding that employers can not keep me satisfied with the amount of work. At my new job, I like the people I work with, I am challenged, but I still do not get enough work. I hate down time. I always want to have something to work on AT LEAST 6 out of the 8 hours. I was surprised that my new employer actually hired me because the majority of the technologies they implement, I had minimal exposure to. I never programmed in the technologies they use outside of one class in college. My greatest strength is that I am an extremely fast learner. I can pick up new technologies with relative ease. They gave me a project to work on by myself and I think they assumed it would take me longer to complete. Now that I finished that app, they are struggling to find something for me to do. I am not sure if it is bad timing being close to the holidays, my manager dealing with personal issues at home, how quickly I finished the first project, or that I expect too much out of an employer? If so, what are good things to do on all this downtime?! EDIT: Thanks for all the feedback! EDIT 2: I am going to "unaccept" the answer in an effort to keep the question open. As a few people have mentioned, this is a great discussion on how to grow as a new worker in the programming field. Microsoft MVP (most valuable professional) title is well known as an honor title for professionals not working for MS directly but who did a lot to popularize MS technologies. This title does not require any certification or any other proof of knowledge by the nominee and is awarded solely upon the one's contribution to community. As a member of Intel Developer Network I am also aware of Intel Black Belt award, that is in many aspects similar to Microsoft MVP. But this is all I know. • How can I lower my C# learning curve? [closed]

But I am feeling that learning Graph is very slow, I have been learning C# programming, doing some coding everyday, but how I can learn very fast and increase my skills rapidly? I know there should be a balance of coding and reading, as without reading I can't code and without coding I can't increase my skills. • Will search engines ever change to allow longer title and description tags? [closed]

  I was just wondering: The standard title length is 64 characters, while meta description tags are 150-160. I was thinking, that it was probably done like that originally because of screen resolutions back in the day, that could not really fit a lot of content. Google still displays search results in a incredible small resolution fixed to the left side of the browser, and it's simplicity is probably what makes it so popular. With websites such as bing, displaying a richer more vivid search experience, in your opinion, will search engines ever change to accept better and longer meta description tags and titles? (I'm asking because we work to accommodate their standards, but what if they change?)

I found the following post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/416331/java-interfaces The Official Java-Tutorial and the references feature examples that are quite good but I would need a very simple example to start with for my class. I don't think the offical tutorial is the best resource for absolute beginners. The students are easily confused, and the most effective example would help. • Is C++ indispensible for AAA game engines, as long as we have console-platform games? [closed]

  C++ has remained the industry standard for game engines much because of its features.. The primary reasons are(afaik): Technical reasons - High performance, native runtime, portibility, negligible latency, and more recently concurrency. Socio-Technical reasons - Availability of Libraries, Legecy stuff, most scripting languages on games have a good C api (ex lua), Good IDEs and most recently improved Development time.(C++11) Social reasons - People know C++, Licenced technologies, and battle proven. Does this make C++ for game engines indispensible, so long we have game consoles? Would not, the above features make me implement new graphics technology in C++ only? Edit: Will learning C++ garuntee me a job as a game engine dev In the future? I want to master every aspect of the language, but I already know C# and python. Should I allocate my time learning C++. I want to be a game engine developer.

• I'm working on my resume for a job fair this week; any tips? [closed]

The job fair I'm going to is really huge (very good chance that it will determine where I intern this summer), so I would definitely appreciate any possible assistance in polishing this up. Any advice possible will be appreciated, ranging from spacing or absurdly minor formatting issues, to rearranging bullet points, to browser incompatibilities, to major changes in anything I've organised or written. At the moment, my only specific question is whether easter eggs are acceptable (specifically, if representatives who understand the reference will generally frown upon my inclusion of "Hacked The Gibson", given the context). Also, if anyone wants to evaluate it (e.g. font size, final arrangement, etc.), here is a PDF snapshot of the document at the time this question was submitted (the final version will have a different file name and appropriate metadata, for the record). • Given two sets of DNA, what does it take to computationally "grow" that person from a fertilised egg and see what they become? [closed]

  My question is essentially entirely in the title, but let me add some points to prevent some "why on earth would you want to do that" sort of answers: This is more of a mind experiment than an attempt to implement real software. For fun. Don't worry about computational speed or the number of available memory bytes. Computers get faster and better all of the time. Imagine we have two data files: Mother.dna and Father.dna. What else would be required? (Bonus point for someone who tells me approx how many GB each file will be, and if the size of the files are exactly the same number of bytes for everyone alive on Earth!) There would ideally need to be a way to see what the egg becomes as it becomes a human adult. If you fancy, feel free to outline the design. I am initially thinking that there'd need to be some sort of volumetric voxel-based 3D environment for simulation purposes.

• How to read data from a large number of files in a folder? [closed]

  I seem to be having some trouble figuring out a solution for a problem. See the thing is, my code is supposed to read a lot of data from a bunch of files. I've been thinking of two different approaches: 1) the first one seems simpler, I ask the user if they would like to examine the next file or just quit out of the program.( I believe this is simpler and would take less time to run through.) 2)It reads through all the files and outputs the results for each of them, and then a shared result for all of them.( I think this would be better for what I've been asked to do and it saves the user some hassle.) If anyone can tell me how to code either of these in C++, I would be very grateful. Here is a sample of the file: 0 -- 19 weight 0 -- 20 weight I use this to determine density and possibly ignore the weights which is a number.

• I've got my Master's in Software Engineering... Now what? [closed]

  Recently I completed a Master of Science in Software Engineering from Drexel University (Philadelphia, PA, US), because I wanted to have some formal education in software (my undergrad is in Math Ed) and also because I wanted to be able to advance my career beyond just programming. Don't get me wrong; I love to code. I spend a lot of my spare time coding. However, for me writing code is just a means to an end: what I REALLY love is designing software. Not visual design, mind you, but the architecture of the system. So, ideally I'd like to try to get a job doing software architecture. The problem is that I have no real experience in it besides my graduate course work. So, what should I do to make my "bones" in software architecture? UPDATE Just so it's clear, I have over 5 years of work experience in software development and an MCTS cert in addition to my education, so I'm not looking for the usual "I'm fresh out of school, what should I do?" advice.

• Is wrapping a third party code the only solution to unit test its consumers? [closed]

  I'm doing unit testing and in one of my classes I need to send a mail from one of the methods, so using constructor injection I inject an instance of Zend_Mail class which is in Zend framework. Now some people argue that if a library is stable enough and won't change often then there is no need to wrap it. So assuming that Zend_Mail is stable and won't change and it fits my needs entirely, then I won't need a wrapper for it. Now take a look at my class Logger that depends on Zend_Mail: class Logger{ private $mailer; function __construct(Zend_Mail $mail){ $this->mail=$mail; } function toBeTestedFunction(){ //Some code $this->mail->setTo('some value'); $this->mail->setSubject('some value'); $this->mail->setBody('some value'); $this->mail->send(); //Some } } However, Unit testing demands that I test one component at a time, so I need to mock the Zend_Mail class. In addition I'm violating the Dependency Inversion principle as my Logger class now depends on concretion not abstraction. Now is wrapping Zend_Mail the only solution or is there a better approach to this problem? The code is in PHP, but answers doesn't have to be. This is more of a design issue than a language specific feature

• Directx vs XNA - Which is better for me? [closed]

  Recently I got Visual Studio 2012 from visual studio 2010, although did not expect Visual Studio to 2012 to designed the way it was. Anyway I am pleased with some of VS 2012 technology and have moved all of my projects to it. At this point of time since I got VS 2012 I have been into making windows applications and other non-game activities. ALTHOUGH have recently gotten into the spirit of game development and I am planning to make a 3d comical game, shader effects, not too complicated meshes, but it requires alot of lighting effects to emphasise certain parts of the game. When I was using VS 2010 I had a great time making 2d games with XNA, it uses a great language, and has a very awesome system. But I no longer have XNA with me, and the workarounds described in stackoverflow always gives me errors while using xna. Anyway it seems that microsoft have stuffed themselves up with xna anyway with the weirdness of Windows 8, and it being only avaliabe on pc and xbox. Due to these reasons I have decided to work with Directx and Direct3d to produce my new game, although the overflowing credits after each directx game gives me the shivers, and the low-level coding of directx also puts me on thin ice with my games, left in a confusional mess with what decision I should make. I don't know anything about directx or direct3d. I am an indie developer, but I am planning to take on alot of professional aspects of games. I don't have heaps of time(2-3 hours a day) I don't mind the complexity of how directx works, as long as I can learn how to make the fundementals of a game in a week. I am also unsure if directx is really for my situation, and keep with xna game development. Anyone can tell me the best technology for me would be great.

• How much ethical is to accept second offer while serving notice period for first company? [closed]

  I had got an offer from a company X 2 months back. Though the compensation was pretty good, I asked for more. They declined and I continued my search for the best. I was expecting good companies (Y, Z) will contact me, but that din't happen. Then 2 months later, now I re-approached company X again and they issued me the same offer. I accepted it, resigned from my current company and serving the notice period (2 months). Now the twist: I got calls from Y and Z (good companies). They definitely give better compensation. If they select me then my plan is to accept the better offer from Y/Z and inform the X immediately that I have got better opportunity, so I will not be able to join the company... Is this ethical ? [Edit Note: I have to just send an acceptance email (i.e. no contract signing) which doesn't legally bind me to join that company. So, legally I am not doing anything wrong. However, I am worried that if I am doing right/wrong ethically.]
