• bootmgr is missing on Toshiba laptop with Windows 7

  I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 on it. As soon as I turn my computer on it says bootmgr is missing The only thing I can get into is the setup menu. Does anyone know what might be wrong? My step brother thinks that it might be that everything was erased off my hard drive. The last thing he did when he used it was to perform the Toshiba updates and restart the computer. If anyone knows what might be wrong or how I could get my computer up and running please let me know.

• User sees all Sharepoint document as being from 1938

  Hello, I currently have a problem I was unable to solve concerning Sharepoint. One of our user is seeing every file on Sharepoint as being from around 1938. The Created and Last Modified field are affected. When the user saves a file on his computer, the date is correct. If I log on his computer, the date are fine. If he log on my computer, the date are wrong once again, so it is linked to its Sharepoint account. The day and month are wrong to, but files uploaded 3 days apart are still 3 days apart for him. I don't see how anything could affect a date like that... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, PS: Destroying his account and give him a new one is not a solution for now. He has been in this company for a long time and he has a lot of rights inherited from Sharepoint 2003 that are complicated to create.

• not being able to access any sudo function on my pc

  Hi, I am not being to access any functions in my desktop and I don't have an OS besides Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Linux and I am new to ubuntu. I think I rebooted my computer thinking that Google Chrome crashed. I opened Google Chrome but it showed opening message but never opened so I restarted my computer. and when my system was loading ('i was playing with keyboard dont know what I typed') and when by ubutnu loaded, I was unable to access anything some of characteristics are listed below I cannot hear any sound I cannot access wired ethernet connection on the right corner where I usually enable to access interne and I have no internet. There is no local apache server either. when ever I try to start apacer I get setuid must be root or something. When I type sudo then I get message setuid must be root. I cannot access orther external storage devices like pendrive and portable hard drive and cannot mount my other drives with FAT32 filesystem. When I try to start my apache webserver with out typing sudo then I get message cannnot open socket or something like it. EDIT:: i remember also doing command chown -R www-data / earlier and got error message EDIT:: and i cannot shutdown my computer, it only logs off

• Windows 7 does not 'wake up' from Sleep mode

  I'm new to Windows 7, so I don't know if this is normal. When the computer is idle for 30 minutes, the screen goes black and no key pressing or mouse movement will bring the computer out of standby. The computer is still running (fans and hard drive noise) but it will not respond and the screen remains black. The only way to get a response is to press and hold the power button until it goes off, then switch it back on. When it turns on it says "Resuming Windows" and then goes black again. Is this normal? Can the time-out delay be increased? Is there a better workaround than switching the PC on and off?

  My Computer Specification My Motherboard specification My new Graphic Card Some days ago I bought a GeForce 8400 GS Graphic card. My computer satisfied all the minimum system requirements it required. After installing the Card in PCI Express Slot I started the computer. But it now hangs at the POST screen i.e.(the first screen when the PC loads). It hangs at Checking NVRAM. I had checked the graphic card on other PC and its works perfectly. So I think there's no problem in the Graphic card. If I remove my graphic card and run my PC with built in Graphic card, my PC works and doesn't hang. So, what can be the problem? • Simple secured SFTP tunnel?

  I'd like to setup an sftp tunnel so that I can connect to an IP-secured SFTP server through a gateway computer from anywhere, and download the files to anywhere. I was thinking of using a combination with netcat, having it listen to either WinSCP or PuTTY sFTP (doesn't matter which). Not sure how I would download the files to the connecting computer though. I would like the tunnel to be secured, preferably, with a username/password. I'm open to using alternative software but I'm looking for unintrusive, simple command line stuff because I don't want to install a lot on this computer. Thanks

  I have created a Domain User id ( for example - Auser ). I have integrated my LDAP login with Firewall. I use this user to login in to firewall only. So, I want to block all the login for this User except on Firewall. Is there any way to accomplish this? As per my knowledge, we can specify :- By right click on Domain User -- Properties -- Account tab -- Logonto ( but here we have to specify Computer Name, we don't have any computer name for Firewall -- So i can't use this option ) Through Group Policy Window Setting -- Security Setting -- Local Policies -- User Rights Assignment -- Allow logon Locally (But it has to apply on Computer OU -- So i can't use this option also ) Any Other Option you know ??

  I have a laptop on my desk at work. I have screensaver timer enabled, so if I'm not using the computer for ten minutes, it will start the screensaver. I also have "On resume, password protect" option checked. This is useful and I want it to be so. However, sometimes I just sit at my cubicle and read some documents without touching the computer. During that time I want my computer to know that I'm there and that there is no need to start the screensaver. I have a mobile phone that is bluetooth paired with the laptop for synchronizing calendars. Is there some way for a script or a program to know that any (or specified) paired device is connected? While typing this out I thought that there might be some registry entries for this. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? -Rope

  I am trying to set up a new user account I can give to friends so they can SSH into my forward computer, and only allow forwarding of certain ports. I do not want my friends to have a shell, or be able to change what ports to where they are allowed to forward. example session: joe(friend) connects using PuTTY (that I have pre-set, he isn't good with computers) to example.com(my Internet facing computer) forwarding ports 8080,1990,25565 to him(with what ever end ports he wants, preferably they stay the same numbers) example ssh command to do similar (but he can still change the ports on my computer!) ssh -N [email protected] -p443 -L8080:192.168.1.2:8080 -L1990:127.0.0.1:1990 -L25565:127.0.0.1:25565 then, same story with other friend smith(same ports, same user even) except he is using linux, so cant use putty. is it possible to also leave default SSH functinality for all other users but this one? I found this when I was searching google, but alas, I did not quite understand what was being suggested, and I don't think they covered restricting port forwarding

  On my Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit system, I have changed the following setting: Local Computer Policy - Computer Configuration - Windows Settings - Security Settings - Local Policies - User Right Assignment - Deny access to this computer from the network This setting was by default "Guest" and I deleted this so that Guest can access a defined network share over the LAN. But later, I have changed my mind and wanted to return this setting to its default. So I edited that setting and specified Guest. But the setting became MYWINPC\Guest. So my question is, what is the difference between the previous setting "Guest" and MYWINPC\Guest? And how do I return this setting to its default value, "Guest"?

• Why does my drive show as 180GB used, but copies only 40GB?

  My computer crashed, so I removed the drive (with Windows XP Professional 32-Bit) and put this drive in another computer running Windows 7 64-bit. Booting with Win7, when going to My Computer it is showing the XP drive as more than 180GB used. So as a quick backup, I'm trying to copy all the disk's content to a folder, but when I start copying, it's showing only 40 GB as the total size of the files to copy. I enabled showing system and hidden files in View options. What could be the problem?

  my computer can catch the signal for many Access Points for the same network, while the network has problem with internet connection in some APs and it's working in others "all APs have the same SSID" Please advice if as i user i can force my computer to connect with specific AP neither than to go with the one with higher power (through MAC adress or IP)?. • Can not join comp to the domain... greyed out

  I have an old WinXP Pro SP3 computer I need to join to the domain, simple right? not really. When I go to control panel - system - computer name and click on CHANGE ("rename this computer") everything is greyed out. I can not set it from workgroup to a domain. I am logged on locally as an admin. (Builtin account and one I created) I have checked local policy (gpedit.msc) on the comp, but it feels like a needle in the haystack. I could probably reload an image faster than trying to fix this...but I am curious so I post here to see if anyone knows of it/fix. • VPN/Proxy server to bypass work proxy

  Here is my dilema, I am at work and can not set up a VPN connection to my VPN account in the USA. So what I would like to do is somehow have my "IE" at work connect to my home network and route any internet requests through my home PC to my VPN account, so I can access my USA Contents? So what I was thinking and I am not sure if this will work, but set up a proxy server at home on my home computer, that then routes all requests to my VPN Tunnel to the USA. Have my work computer use my home computer as the proxy and viola I have unrestricted internet access? Does that sound feasable? Thanks.

• Slow performance with WAMP localhost access from other devices

  I setup a localhost WAMP server and other device can access my localhost site on my win8 laptop with computer name instead of IP (bc I have use DCIP so that the wireless router can assign me IP otherwise it will not work). However, problem is that the website (WordPress), access speed is extremely slow on other devices other than my localhost computer, usually a 3s task take at least 10 seconds. I want to limit the computers that can access the windows server computer to authorized computers only. The authorized computers won't have static IPs, so I cannot limit them on basis of IP address. As such i want to enable password security for remote desktop, but I do not want to have to enter a password to log into my computer if i'm physically at my computer. Is there any way to do this? I am an administrator user and I want to have the same icons and configuration regardless of if i log in remotely or locally but i want only the remote connection to require a password.   I installed TB3 on a new computer set up to use imap to get my gmail -- works fine I copied all of my existing emails from old computer into the appdata directiry fir thunderbird local folders. All files are of the right size that I know the data is present When I run tb on the new computer all of the FOLDERS show up under LocalFolders. 5, BUT BUT BUT, when I click on any folder, all I get is a blank -- no emails are shown. additional info: Bitdefender DOES see the missing emails because one or two are tagged as suspicious But Windows 7 search is NOT seeing the missing emails.   I made a git repo on a local machine with "git init --bare" and added it as the remote origin on the project on my main computer with ssh: git add remote origin [email protected]:repoName.git I was able to make a commit and push from my main computer to the other computer the day I created the repo, but today i tried and it didn't work. When I did "git push origin" it returned this error: bash: line 1: git-receive-pack: command not found fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly The two machines are mac the main one running Leopard and the server one running Tiger.   I just purchased and installed an XFX ATI Radeon HD 4650 video card. The installation instructions said to remove the old video card drivers before installing the new driver. I did both things, but now every time I start my computer, the Found New Hardware wizard pops up for the following three devices: PCI Device SM Bus Controller Other PCI Bridge Device Furthermore, my LAN port no longer functions. The cable's connected, and the light on the port comes on, but the computer can't find any servers when I attempt to connect with it. The modem and router are working, and obviously I'm able to use the other computer here to post this. What do I do to fix this?

• What antivirus software supports updates without an internet connection?

  I'm putting antivirus software on Windows 7 computers in the middle of Africa. The computers don't have internet access, but still need to be protected against viruses from CDs and thumbdrives. Separate from these computers is one computer that does have extremely spotty internet access. What's the best AV software for this situation? The important part, as I see it, is that we need to keep the computers up to date, but can't let the AV software suck down updates at its leisure: the computers are disconnected, and getting emails onto the connected computer is a challenge enough. We thought we might transfer update files to the connected computer using a protocol that can handle repeated connection drops (e.g. FTP with resume.) Then we'd manually apply the update files to the disconnected computers. Does any AV software support this? Is there a better solution?

• Samba domain controller: remove 1 Windows client

  my domain is controlled by a Samba domain controller running on openSUSE 11.3. It manages other openSUSE boxes and some Windows 7 boxes. Now one harddisk of a Windows 7 computer crashed and I had to reinstall. I wasn't able to get the computer name ("Win26") of the broken PC out of the domain and so I couldn't add the reinstalled "Win26" to the domain again. So how can I remove the entry of the old "Win26" computer out of the domain controller, so that I can add the new "Win26" to the domain again?
