Laptop display not working unless DVI cable is plugged in

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T420 with an i5 processor and integrated graphics. I dropped the laptop and now the screen is not working. I replaced the screen and it is still not working. It shows the BIOS and then at Windows login the screen gets all static looking. But if I plug in a DVI-to-HDMI cable the laptop starts and works fine. Even the external display works and the laptop display works too. As soon as I unplug the cable the screen crashes and is all static. I cannot figure out the problem. The video works because the external screen still works. How can I fix this?

Tried every possible method but couldn't enable compiz?

a newbie, installed ubuntu 10.10 about a month ago,over the month i fixed everything from dad playback,to webcam,but couldn't enable compiz anayway,my card is blacklisted, i tried the SKIP_CHECKS=yes,method and even tried ghex editing,but of no avail,now all i get when i run compiz in the terminal is "segmentation fault",the specs of my laptop is intel core i3 2330,and intel hd graphics 3000,has anyone has been able to run compiz on intel hd graphics 3000?

Why does Oracle SQL Developer take so long to open?

I think anyone who's used Oracle SQL Developer will agree that it's painfully slow on the load. My research has lead me to a solution that seems to have helped a little, and that's telling OSQLD not to check for updates on startup. However, it still takes several minutes to open. What could OSQLD possibly be doing during load time? Is there any way get it to open right away? Why is my USB data transfer so slow?

Whenever I do any kind of file transfer using USB, whether to a USB stick, or with my Android phone, or anything else, it is ridiculously slow. It says 59.8 KB/sec, which would be an awesome speed if this were 1991 and I was using a modem to dial up to my local BBS. Surely USB technology is better than that...? 37 seconds to move less data than the equivelent of 1 MP3 file? Also, regardless of what it says about speed and time, the reality is much, much slower. I routinely see it say something like "37 seconds left" and have to wait for minutes. Sometimes, if I want to move large amounts of files, it can say it will take 8 hours or more. Is this normal? My computer may not be the most awesome on the market, and about a year old, but it's an i5 with 4GB RAM and modern components, so surely this isn't the hardware's fault. What can I do to get better USB data transfer performance? Also, I did look at this question, but my newbie eyes don't see anything that look like an actual solution, just a lot of discussion about what transfer rates could or should be. parallel to usb driver windows 7 dot matrix printer

I recently built a new Core i5 system with Windows 7 Professional. I had planned to hook up my TVS MSP 250 XL printer using a USB to parallel cable Once I plug the cable in, Windows 7 recognizes it as an IEEE-1284 controller and automatically installs the appropriate driver. However, in the status window it reports the following: "USB Printing Support -- Ready to use" "No Printer Attached -- Ready to use" When I then go ahead and manually add the printer using the "virtual printer port for USB" I can add the printer seemingly without problem. Once finished, it appears in the Devices and Printers panel. Yet, all attempts to print on this printer fail. It appears that simply no data is sent to the printer (either by programs like word or adobe or by attempting to print a test page. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Ubuntu live cd : black screen and blinking cursor

I try to install ubuntu 12.04 on my computer. I can get to the purple screen on the live cd but then, if I choose "Installing Ubuntu", I have a black screen with a cursor blinking (and nothing else happens). My PC : acer aspire M3920, CPU i5-2300, 8 Gb RAM, NVIDIA gt 405. What I already tried : I tried with 12.04 and 13.04 daily build I tried with a live usb and with a live dvd I tried the following boot options : nomodset, acpi=off I googled a lot and it seems that it could be a graphic card problem. Do you know any other boot options that I could try ? UPDATE This is not a duplicate : I've tried all the common boot options (nomodeset, noacpi...) and it doesn't change anything. With the option "no splash" (instead of "quiet splash"), I can see what happens before the forever-blinking cursor : [sdg] no caching mode present [sdg] assuming drive cache : write trough ata8.00: excetion Emask 0x52 ... frozen ata8 : SError : { RecovData RecovComm UnrecovData...} ata8.00 : failed command : IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE ... ata8.00 : status : { DRDY } ata8 : hard resetting link Does somebody know what it means ? N.B. astonishingly, Puppy Linux boots fine (but Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu do not) Solution In fact, it was not a graphic card problem. I had to disconnect the dvd drive and connect it to another free sata connector (I don't really understand why Ubuntu had trouble with this connector and Windows 7 not). After that, everything worked fine.

Are there any good Java/JVM libraries for my Expression Tree architecture?

My team and I are developing an enterprise-level application and I have devised an architecture for it that's best described as an "Expression Tree". The basic idea is that the leaf nodes of the tree are very simple expressions (perhaps simple values or strings). Nodes closer to the trunk will get more and more complex, taking the simpler nodes as their inputs and returning more complex results for their parents. Looking at it the other way, the application performs some task, and for this it creates a root expression. The root expression divides its input into smaller units and creates child expressions, which when evaluated it can use to build it's own result. The subdividing process continues until the simplest leaf nodes. There are two very important aspects of this architecture: It must be possible to manipulate nodes of the tree after it is built. The nodes may be given new input values to work with and any change in result for that node needs to be propagated back up the tree to the root node. The application must make best use of available processors and ultimately be scalable to other computers in a grid or in the cloud. Nodes in the tree will often be updating concurrently and notifying other interested nodes in the tree when they get a new value. Unfortunately, I'm not at liberty to discuss my actual application, but to aid understanding a little bit, you might imagine a kind of spreadsheet application being implemented with a similar architecture, where changes to cells in the table are propagated all over the place to other cells that need the result. The spreadsheet could get so massive that applying multi-core multi-computer distributed system to solve it would be of benefit. I've got my prototype "Expression Engine" working nicely on a single multi-core PC but I've started to run into a few concurrency issues (as expected because I haven't been taking too much care so far) so it's now time to start thinking about migrating the Engine to a more robust library, and that leads to a number of related questions: Is there any precedent for my "Expression Tree" architecture that I could research? What programming concepts should I consider. I realise this approach has many similarities to a functional programming style, and I'm already aware of the concepts of using futures and actors. Are there any others? Are there any languages or libraries that I should study? This question is inspired by my accidental discovery of Scala and the Akka library (which has good support for Actors, Futures, Distributed workloads etc.) and I'm wondering if there is anything else I should be looking at as well?

Beware of new line characters One of the most frequent issues we encounter in Tech Support is the corruption of files that are transferred between Windows and Unix. The transfer can occur at any stage, but ultimately involves a transfer of a file using an ftp client that is running on Windows; it could be ftp or filezilla. Windows uses two characters to mark the end of a line in a text file (CR/LF),carriage return, linefeed. Unix uses a single character (CR). In all situations, it is best to use binary mode transfer for all files, including ascii text files. Common problems: upload a core file from unix to windows using ftp in ascii mode.The file is going to be larger on Windows than Unix.ftp doesn't know if this is a text file with real line-ends, it takes every ascii CR and transmits two ascii characters CR/LF.The core file, tar file, library ... will be corrupted when transferred to Oracle. download a shell script to Windows, and transfer it to Unix using ftpIf the file is edited on Windows, the unix script line-end chars will be doubled.Unix doesn't know how to handle that, and will likely tell you the script is not executable.Why? The first line of a shell script ( called "sh-bang" ), identifies the command interpreter the unix shell should use for this script. Common examples:#/bin/sh#/bin/ksh#/bin/bash#/bin/perl#/bin/sh^M # will not be understood.#/bin/env ksh # special syntax. Find ksh and run it dos2unix is a common utility found on most unix platforms, that repairs the issue of Windows LineEnd characters in unix script files. I've written my own flavor of this utility for use in Tech Support and build environments, that is a bit easier to use, and has some nice side-effects. accepts a list of files: dos2unix *.sh repairs the file in-place. Doesn't generate a new file you have to name retains the same timestamp; it is the encoding that changed, not the file content. Here are the versions of dos2unix for each of the environments we work in.They are compressed with gzip, to avoid the ftp ascii transfer trap,and because I am quite limited in the number of files I can upload to this blog. LiveCD not booting/can't install Ubuntu 11.04

So, i got a new laptop somedays ago and as usualy, i went formated it to install Ubuntu. Download 11.04 and burned it on my pendrive using my old laptop (running 11.04). When i tryed to boot from the LiveUSB on my new laptop, it just showed me some weird graphics and if i select any option (can't see what im selecting), it gives me a black screen and that is all. Then i tryed to boot with this LiveUSB on my old laptop, and it worked just fine ._. Burned a CD with Ubuntu 11.04 (64bits) and the problem continue. Then i tought it could be my CD Driver, since the laptop is new and all... burned a Windows 7 64 bits DVD and it worked just fine. Also, if i check the CD/Pendrive inside Windows Seven, all the files there are ok. Anyone have any idea of what can be? I found lots of questions about this, but none of them had the weird menus i'm getting ._. oohh... i also get a "prefix is not set" before the weird menu appears :S My sis specs: Intel Core i5 2400 Intel HD 3000 4gb DDR3 If anyone can help, i will be really greatfull ._.

Intel HD 4000 and Nvidia GT 650 working together on laptop

My new win7 Acer notebook has i5 CPU with Intel HD 4000 and Nvida GT650 GPU. Obviously monitor is plugged to Intel HD. In Nvidia control panel I can configure PhysX but that doesn't help. Windows system rating shows high gaming experience and average/low windows aero experience. What does that mean? Does my laptop use nvidia for games/3d apps nad Intel HD 4000 for aero? Should I disable Intel HD in bios, but how to plug monitor to nvidia? Or should I leave everything like now because everything works as it suppose to work? I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 version along side with windows 7. Ubuntu freezes randomly I am unable to use any keys on keyboard since they are not working even mouse is not working.the only solution to get off from this freeze is restarting my computer.I have ATi/AMD graphic card but I removed it before installing Ubuntu 14.04.I have run memory test no problem with ram.please give some solution to get rid of this abnormal freeze. thanks in advance. system configuration CPU=Intel core 2 duo e7500 2.93ghz motherboard=Intel dg41wv hard disk=Seagate 500gb ram=4gb

Error when running gtk-redshift

Building modules with linux kernel for custom flavor

I followed the instructions given in the link: http://blog.avirtualhome.com/how-to-compile-a-new-ubuntu-11-04-natty-kernel/ for building a custom kernel and booting it. Everything works fine, except that when building it, I used the option skipmodule=true (as given in this link), so I guess the modules are not built for this kernel. I'm saying this because after I installed the image (using dpkg -i), when I run 'ls -l' in the /lib/modules/2.6.38-11-i5 folder, all the files/folders except the 'kernel' folder have got updated (Btw, I had built it last time and it had worked fine,this is an update on the same kernel source). So is there some option/command that I missed that exports the modules as well? Thanks for your help.

With version 3.0 the SSMS 2014 is fully supported. Since this is a new major version you'll eventually need a new license. Please check the EULA to see when. As a thank you for your patience with this release, everyone that bought the SSMS Tools Pack after April 1st, the release date of SQL Server 2014, will receive a free upgrade. You won't have to do anything for this to take effect. First thing you'll notice is that the UI has been completely changed. It's more in line with SSMS and looks less web-like. Also the core has been updated and rewritten in some places to be better suited for future features. Major improvements for this release are: Window Connection Coloring Something a lot of people have asked me over the last 2 years is if there's a way to color the tab of the window itself. I'm very glad to say that now it is. In SSMS 2012 and higher the actual query window tab is also colored at the top border with the same color as the already existing strip making it much easier to see to which server your query window is connected to even when a window is not focused. To make it even better, you can not also specify the desired color based on the database name and not just the server name. This makes is useful for production environments where you need to be careful in which database you run your queries in. Format SQL The format SQL core was rewritten so it'll be easier to improve it in future versions. New improvement is the ability to terminate SQL statements with semicolons. This is available only in SSMS 2012 and up. Execution Plan Analyzer A big request was to implement the Problems and Solutions tooltip as a window that you can copy the text from. This is now available. You can move the window around and copy text from it. It's a small improvement but better stuff will come. SQL History Current Window History has been improved with faster search and now also shows the color of the server/database it was ran against. This is very helpful if you change your connection in the same query window making it clear which server/database you ran query on. The option to Force Save the history has been added. This is a menu item that flushes the execution and tab content history save buffers to disk. SQL Snippets Added an option to generate snippet from selected SQL text on right click menu. Run script on multiple databases Configurable database groups that you can save and reuse were added. You can create groups of preselected databases to choose from for each server. This makes repetitive tasks much easier New small team licensing option A lot of requests came in for 1 computer, Unlimited VMs option so now it's here. Hope it serves you well.

just got HP DV6-6145dx Notebook: - AMD Quad-Core A8-3500M Accelerated Processor - 8GB DDR3 SDRAM - AMD Radeon HD 6620G well i removed every thing that related to windows " system, hidden partitions " so that i wont need them. so, i tried to install ubuntu 12.04 64bit and i got a lot of error and crashes -- gives me that ubuntu has an error "executable bath" from the beginning after boot -- other one that said ubuntu installation process crashed and some times the words converted to squares and can't continuing the installation process at all on the other hand i tried the 32bit version, and every thing went smoothly need your help thanks

gem5 parser error

I am trying to run parser from here, but it gives this error: This program requires jinja2 version 2.7 or later I have already installed the jinja2 package by running sudo apt-get install python-jinja2. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong (with a little guide to run the tool as well)? The m5out folder is here, with the stats for a ARM core simulation, so you don't have to install gem5 to get those two files required by the script.

Less graphics power all the sudden (Intel HD 3000)

I have a Intel Sandy Bridge i5 with the HD 3000 graphics card. I used to be able to play Urban Terror and Nexuiz comfortably with 85 and 60 frames per seconds until mid/end of October 2012, the former even on a full HD display with that many frames. Now I have around 30 to 45 on the smaller laptop screen and around 20 to 30 on the external monitor. Did something happen to Kubuntu 12.04 so that it has less graphics performance than previously? Update I looked into the system monitor and could not detect anything being at the maximum. The four CPU cores were pretty much bored, the 8 GB RAM were filled with maybe 2 GB. And I ran intel_cpu_top and did not notice anything at its limit. See the output. after Kernel bisecting I now did a kernel bisect and tried 3.2.0-23, 3.2.0-27, 3.2.0-29 and 3.2.0-30 and all had full graphics power. Interestingly, I then had full power when I just booted back into the regular 3.2.0-32 kernel. This does not make sense to me …
