• Slow boot on Ubuntu 12.04

  My Ubuntu is booting really slow (Windows is booting faster...). I am using Ubuntu a Dell Inspiron 1545 Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4300 @ 2.10GHz, 4GB Ram, 500GB HDD running Ubuntu 12.04 with gnome-shell 3.4.1. • Coda 2 and SCP uploading files with the wrong permission

  Currently I have a basic Ubuntu server running a website. The website is for a few students learning HTML/PHP and each student has their own account with a symbolic link to the shared website folder. Since the students are working on the website together, each user needs to be able to modify all the files (index.html for example). So I created a Webdev group containing all of the students with the default umask of 0002 set in their .bashrc (This allows newly created files to be 774). The shared folder is owned by the group Webdev with a chmod g+s so that new files/folders also belong to the group Webdev. The problem is that the students are using an IDE (Coda 2) and when they create a new file or folder using the IDE the file has the permissions of 644 on the server (not group writable). However when I make a new file through connecting with Cyberduck (SFTP client) the file permissions are 664 (as they should be). So I don't understand why Coda would be any different. However, after some trial and error I believe that Coda is first creating the file on local disk and then uploading that file to the server. On a mac by default a newly created file is 644. When the client uploads a file that's already 644 it stays 644 on the server side (umask is kind of useless in this situation). I've also tried creating ACL permissions for that folder but an uploaded file from my mac via SCP doesn't get the default ACL permissions. In Coda there is an option to change file permissions on a transfer. However this option seems to apply a chmod to all files being uploaded or saved. When one of students is modifying a file created by someone else when they try to upload the file or save it Coda tries to also do a chmod but fails because that user isn't the owner of the file. My current solution is using bindfs... I mount the shared web folder and bindfs sets permissions and group ownership of newly created files. However, bindfs seems to be a bit slow and I'm sure there is a better solution. Even if the students ditched Coda 2 and used Mac vim with scp the newly created files on the server would behave the same (644) which is default on the mac. Other options... 1) Either I teach the students to use (ssh/chmod) with their IDE to change their own file permissions when uploading. 2) I make all the students' Macs have the default umask of 0002 which would upload files with the right permissions. 3) Write a corn script to fix the file permissions every 5 to 15 minutes... (This option I think is the worst if students are working together at the same time). Is there any way that I could make all files that are uploaded via SCP have the default file permissions of 664 even though the uploaded file has a lower permission? (After hours of searching I don't think this is possible) I guess a corn script is my best option for novice users. • Gateway IP Returns to Zero

  When you set a static IP under Ubuntu 12.04.1, you must supply the desired machine IP and the gateway IP, all using the Network Manager. When I first entered them and rebooted, everything worked great. On the second boot, however, Firefox could find no Web page. Upon checking, I discovered that the gateway IP had returned to zero. Now, no matter how often I resupply it, it returns to zero immediately after NM "saves" it: that is, appears as zero when redisplayed. The only way I can get to the Internet is to restore DHCP operation. I need to use static IP for access to my home network. Would appreciate any suggestion. --Robert Smith

  Really do not know is this right place to ask such a questions. But it is about programming in a different light. So, currently contracting with company witch pretends to be big corporation. Everyone is so important that all small issues like developers are ignored. Give you a sample: company VPN is configured so that if you have VPN then HTTP traffic is banned. Bearing this in mind can you imagine my workflow: Morning. Ok time to get latest source. Ups, no VPN. Let’s connect. Click-click. 3 sec. wait time. Ok getting source. Do I have emails? Ups. VPN is on, can’t check my emails. Need to wait for source to come up. Finally here it is! Ok Click-click VPN is gone. What is in my email. Someone reported a bug. Good, let’s track it down. It is in TFS already. Oh, dam, I need VPN. Click-click. Ok, there is description. Yea, I have seen this issue in stachoverflow.com. Let’s go there. Ups, no internet. Click-click. No internet. What? IPconfig… DHCP server kicked me out. Dam. Renew ip. 1..2..3. Ok internet is back. Google: site: stachoverflow.com 3 min. I have solution. Great I love stackoverflow.com. Don’t want to remember days where there was no stackoveflow.com. Ok. Copy paste this like to studio. Dam, studio is stalled, can’t reach files on TFS. Click-click. VPN is back. Get source out, paste my code. Grand. Let’s see what other comments about an issue in stackoverflow.com tells. Hmm.. There is a link. Click. Dammit! No internet. Click-click. No internet. DHCP kicked me out. Dammit. Now it is even worse: this happens 3-4 times a day. After certain amount of VPN connections open\closed my internet goes down solid. Only way to get internet back is reboot. All my browser tabs/SQL windows/studio will be gone. This happened just now when I am typing this. Back to issue I am solving right now: I am getting frustrated - I do not care about better solution for this issue. Let’s do it somehow and forget. This Click-click barrier between internet and TFS kills me… Sounds familiar? You could say there are VPN settings to change. No! This is company laptop, not allowed to do changes. I am very very lucky to have admin privileges on my machine. Most of developers don’t. So just learned to live with this frustration. It takes away 40-60 minutes daily. Tried to email company support, admins. They are too important ant too busy with something that just ignored my little man’s problem. Politely ignored. Question is: Is this normal in corporate world? (Have been in States, Canada, Germany. Never seen this.)

• Sharing internet to Ubuntu 12.04 VMWare guest

  Got the 12.04 distro and installed this on my Mac VMWare Fusion (Version 4.1.2). Install went fine and Ubuntu seemed to update itself during the install. Rebooted and now I cannot get Ubuntu to access the internet via my Macs Ethernet connection (Connected to a router) Have tried settings the VMWare network adaptor to NAT or bridged and Host only without success. In Ubuntu I have the eth0 set to Automatic DHCP. VMWare tools is installed as well. I know next to nothing about what to do here and net searches on both Stackoverflow and Superuser sites are producing not results for me. Could someone please help? What to eventually have Ubuntu run in the background as a development web server running Zend Framework and CE Server edition but need thew internet access to run updates etc on Ubuntu. Any help would be really appreciated. TIA John

  I setup and fully configured ubuntu-12.04-server machine with cobbler/dhcp running in about 10 minutes (compared to taking over an hour on centos 5.8). I discovered the cobbler import which appears to be useful. How to share files between those two? I have already tried few ways (eg. samba), but it looks like the machines are not visible to each other: @machine1$: ping 192.168.168.104 From 192.168.168.105 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable What do I need to configure? Apparmor? Firewall?

• Nodes can't connect to server after bootstrap

  I installed maas and I was able to add nodes and they became in ready state. I executed: juju bootstrap And then one of my nodes is waking up and I receive this message on server (after juju status): And this message is shown on node after it wakes up: I am doing this several times and each time I receive the same result. I think something is wrong with my network. It look like this: internet <-> router <-> switch <-> nodes | |<----->server Router is used as a DHCP Server. It's ip is 192.168.0.1 - it's my default gateway. When I was installing maas server I installed dnsmasq and I have used as a range 192.168.0.5-192.158.0.200 and for gateway I used 192.168.0.1 and for domain I used nothing. I was able to add nodes without problems. What maybe the problem not letting nodes to connect to maas server?

• Check connection and reconnect wifi

  I'm building a wireless photoframe. The one thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to get my wifi connection back up using a recommended method. Right now I edited /etc/network/interfaces so wlan0 is started at boot: auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet dhcp wireless-essid ourssid This method works fine for booting. But I found that if I do not check the connection for a long time (could be a week) it might be down. So I should reconnect. What I do now to verify the connection is working is downloading a file from the server that can't be cached (http://server.ext/ping.php?randomize=123456) If I fail to retrieve the file I assume that the connection is no longer working and I run a shell script like #!/bin/bash ifconfig wlan0 up iwconfig wlan0 essid "ourssid" dhclient wlan0 And the connection comes back. But I can't find anything if this is in any way a good method. Can this be improved upon, or is this already right?

  So at first I was unable to get my Belkin Surf & Share usb to install on my computer, so then I plugged my computer directly into my router and my computer won't acknowledge any connection. I know very little about how to use ubuntu, please help me. What I do know is: I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx In my 'edit connections', I go into 'wired' tab, select "wired connection 1" then 'edit' it brings up 4 tab options: Wired (I input the MAC address that's printed on the bottom of my router, MTU is set to automatic) 802.1x Security (currently: not checked) IPv4 Settings (currently: Automatic (DHCP) addresses only) IPv6 Settings (currently: Automatic)

• How did Ubuntu know my WPA Key?

  I've recently moved my /home to another computer (keeping all configuration files), with a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10. After Installation I've installed wicd and ndiswrapper, to get my Internet Connection up and running. However, after changing /etc/network/interfaces from auto lo iface lo inet loopback To auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet dhcp and running sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart to get wlan0 set up, wicd just suddenly connected... to my modem. Without supplying any information about the modem whatsoever. Of course wicd creates a local directory at ~/.wicd/, but that directory is empty, and the temporary global configuration at /var/lib/wicd/configurations/ didn't exist due to fresh installation of ubuntu. So what's the deal? Where did wicd get the ESSID and the WPA Key? There hasn't been any activity in this question, but it's still open (and even worth some rep)!

• Unable to fix broken packages with sudo apt-get install -f

  Here's my result, of sudo apt-get install -f. i have Ran it twice and got negative result. I believe there is an error at "error in Version string '0:3.6.1-dates for language English Translation data updates for all supported packages for: English" This same statement "error in Version string, caused me three days of attempting to download version 12.04. There is a bug report concerning the quoted text as well. Is there anyway to download the version without the language packs, why would I corrupt version 11.10? Also, when attempting to download Synaptic using sudo apt-get install synaptic, I get the same error message. Again I point out the initial download problems and the same error message receipt. • MAAS. Adding nodes

  Can anybody help me with MAAS installation? I installed it on 1 of my computers, configured DHCP server and now 3 PCs are in their own private network. I tried to add node via PXE image, but "Can not apply stage final, no datasource found! Likely bad things to come!" error comes after giving me option to log in. Then I tried to add node via web interface, but after adding it node's status is always "commisioning". So what should I do know? Any help is appreciated. Thank you P.S. • Unable to connect to wireless network

  A real newbie here. Just downloaded Ubuntu 12.10, put on USB stick and have booted it on my other PC after modifying the boot sequence to boot from USB before hard drive where Windows XP lives. Have no problems with Windows and my wireless but not with Ubuntu. The PC is a Dell Latitude D630 laptop. According to Windows XP , the wireless card is a Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card, my IP address is 192.168.0.193, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, assigned by DHCP, SSID is HOME , type 802.11 and default gateway is 192.168.0.1. Ok, back to booting from USB and TRY option, I am Editing Network connections, I have created/configured "Wireless connection 1" with SSID of HOME and the only other thing I have changed is on the "Editing IPV4 routes for Wireless connection 1 I have enterred 192.168.0.193 , netmask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1 Anyways , no go. It then loses its IP address. 'dhclient eth0' says "No working leases in persistent database - sleeping" DHCP is working fine on the wi-fi router. The laptop is wired to a wireless router and from there wirelessly to a desktop. Desktop and Laptop can ping each other from Windows. I can ping the VM from Windows on the same laptop, but not from the desktop. Strangely ping has started to resolve hostnames to IPv6 addresses and not IPv4. Don't know whether that's connected? A kick in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I've been an Ubuntu desktkop user for a few years, but new to ubuntu servers.
