• Priority Manager–Part 1- Laying out the plan

- by Patrick Liekhus
Now that we have shown the EDMX with XPO/XAF and how use SpecFlow and BDD to run EasyTest scripts, let’s put it all together and show the evolution of a project using all the tools combined. I have a simple project that I use to track my priorities throughout the day. It uses some of Stephen Covey’s principles from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The idea is to write down all your priorities the night before and rank them. This way when you get started tomorrow you will have your list of priorities. Now it’s not that new things won’t appear tomorrow and reprioritize your list, but at least now you can track them. My idea is to create a project that will allow you manage your list from your desktop, a web browser or your mobile device. This way your list is never too far away. I will layout the data model and the additional concepts as time progresses. My goal is to show the power of all of these tools combined and I thought the best way would be to build a project in sequence. I have had this idea for quite some time so let’s get it completed with the outline below. Here is the outline of the series of post in the near future: Part 2 – Modeling the Business Objects Part 3 – Changing XAF Default Properties Part 4 – Advanced Settings within Liekhus EDMX/XAF Tool Part 5 – Custom Business Rules Part 6 – Unit Testing Our Implementation Part 7 – Behavior Driven Development (BDD) and SpecFlow Tests Part 8 – Using the Windows Application Part 9 – Using the Web Application Part 10 – Exposing OData from our Project Part 11 – Consuming OData with Excel PowerPivot Part 12 – Consuming OData with iOS Part 13 – Consuming OData with Android Part 14 – What’s Next I hope this helps outline what to expect. I anticipate that I will have additional topics mixed in there but I plan on getting this outline completed within the next several weeks. Thanks

• All my Ubuntu VMs have apt-get update problems

- by kashani
I'm running Virtualbox 4.1 on an x86_64 Windows 7 host. I've got a collection of 12.04 and 10.04 LTS VMs I use to create debs for work. In the last week I started noticing problems on the 12.04 VMs. Tried the usual apt-get clean bit which didn't help. I rolled a new 11.10 VM for testing a Worpress upgrade. This VM has never been able to run apt-get update without errors. The interesting errors look like this: Get: 8 http://security.ubuntu.com oneiric-security/main Translation-en_US [344 B] 14% [7 Sources 48686/877 kB 6%] [Waiting for headers]bzip2: (stdin) is not a bzip2 file. • Getting Unity 3D working on legacy Nvidia card

- by user69545
I installed the latest nVIDIA drivers for my FX5500 card. I understand that the X server version does not officially support this driver or card but was wondering what I can do to get compiz running. I have researched for hours on this issue but cannot come up with an answer for myself. I might be doing all this for nothing but I wanted to at least try. Here is the output of my test: mike@mike-linux-box:~$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: GeForce FX 5500/AGP/SSE2 OpenGL version string: 2.1.2 NVIDIA 173.14.35 Not software rendered: yes Not blacklisted: no GLX fbconfig: yes GLX texture from pixmap: yes GL npot or rect textures: yes GL vertex program: yes GL fragment program: yes GL vertex buffer object: yes GL framebuffer object: yes GL version is 1.4+: yes Unity 3D supported: no So I was wondering what is the "Not Blacklisted" test? Is this the Nouveau Blacklisting? nVIDIA driver did that automatically. Does this need to be removed? Any help would be appreciated. I just want to run compiz effects. Thanks.

• Importing tab delimited file into array in Visual Basic 2013 [migrated]

- by JaceG
I am needing to import a tab delimited text file that has 11 columns and an unknown number of rows (always minimum 3 rows). I would like to import this text file as an array and be able to call data from it as needed, throughout my project. And then, to make things more difficult, I need to replace items in the array, and even add more rows to it as the project goes on (all at runtime). Hopefully someone can suggest code corrections or useful methods. I'm hoping to use something like the array style sMyStrings(3,2), which I believe would be the easiest way to control my data. Any help is gladly appreciated, and worthy of a slab of beer. Here's the coding I have so far: Imports System.IO Imports Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO Public Class Main Dim strReadLine As String Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load Dim sReader As IO.StreamReader = Nothing Dim sRawString As String = Nothing Dim sMyStrings() As String = Nothing Dim intCount As Integer = -1 Dim intFullLoop As Integer = 0 If IO.File.Exists("C:\MyProject\Hardware.txt") Then ' Make sure the file exists sReader = New IO.StreamReader("C:\MyProject\Hardware.txt") Else MsgBox("File doesn't exist.", MsgBoxStyle.Critical, "Error") End End If Do While sReader.Peek >= 0 ' Make sure you can read beyond the current position sRawString = sReader.ReadLine() ' Read the current line sMyStrings = sRawString.Split(New Char() {Chr(9)}) ' Separate values and store in a string array For Each s As String In sMyStrings ' Loop through the string array intCount = intCount + 1 ' Increment If TextBox1.Text <> "" Then TextBox1.Text = TextBox1.Text & vbCrLf ' Add line feed TextBox1.Text = TextBox1.Text & s ' Add line to debug textbox If intFullLoop > 14 And intCount > -1 And CBool((intCount - 0) / 11 Mod 0) Then cmbSelectHinge.Items.Add(sMyStrings(intCount)) End If Next intCount = -1 intFullLoop = intFullLoop + 1 Loop End Sub

• How do I disable touchpad tap to click?

- by AWE
You've heard this a million times but the "tap to click" is a pain in the behind and I want to disable it. There is no touchpad in gpointing-device-settings and neither in mouse and touchpad in system settings. I've tried some commands in terminal but it's all crap. Dconf-editor doesn't react. • virtual install from ISO not getting virtual kernel

- by Pete
I have a KVM host (12.04.5) that I have been installing guests on in variety of ways. I just noticed recently one of my guests was running a generic kernel when I'm fairly certain I specified minimum virtual machine during install from a 12.04.2 server iso. From what I understand it should be running a stripped down kernel "optimized" for VMs. I set up another server to test, this time using a 14.04.1, and sure enough I ended up with uname -r returning 3.13.0-32-generic. It seems that if I use an .iso to install, I end up with generic regardless. However building with the vmbuilder ... --flavour virtual --suite precise ... (I don't have trusty available yet) script gives me an ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS system running kernel 3.2.0-67-virtual. The server FAQ mentions I should be getting the virtual kernel. What are practical advantages of using linux-image-virtual kernel? gives me the impression that it doesn't really matter functionally (in my case I only have a couple VMs running). I first thought was maybe I was somehow not applying the correct options because the installer F4 menu doesn't really give great feedback if the mode has been selected or not. Looking in the log /var/log/installers/syslog I see Command line: file=/cdrom/preceed/ubuntu-server-minimalvm.seed ... I know that I can install the virtual kernel package down the road, but why am I not, or should I be getting the virtual flavor of kernel from an ISO install when doing an minimum VM install?

• Wireless will not connect on an Asus U56? [closed]

- by ernie
I have an ASUS U56. I could connect to internet without delay or problems in Ubuntu 11.04. Now, running Ubuntu 11.10, I have not been able to connect. I can see the network and the computer tries to connect, but never makes the connection. I have been trying to fix this problem since the release date of 11.10. I had to install the older kernel 2.6 to get the wifi to work. • Book Review: Professional ASP.Net MVC4

- by Sam Abraham
The past few weeks have been particularly busy as I continue to dedicate a bigger portion of my free time to refreshing my memory and enhancing my knowledge of best practices pertaining to technologies we plan on using for a major upcoming project. In this blog post, I will be providing a brief overview of my latest reading “Professional ASP.Net MVC4” by Jon Galloway, Phil Haack, Brad Wilson and K. Scott Allen. This book is a must read for web developers looking to enhance their MVC expertise with best practices and tips shared from recognized industry experts. This book takes the reader on a 16-chapter long journey towards being a better ASP.NET MVC developer with chapter 16 putting all information covered in practical context by dissecting the implementation of Nuget.org, a real-life open-source, ASP.NET MVC project. All code samples referenced in this book are conveniently accessible via NuGet, a free, open-source Library package manager that installs as a Visual Studio Extension. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 thoroughly cover MVC’s various components: Controllers “C”, Views “V” and Models “M” respectively. Chapter 5 covers additional extension methods (Helpers) provided to speed and ease the use of common HTML elements such as forms, textboxes, grids, to name a few… Chapter 6 tackles built-in validation while providing examples and use cases on implementing custom validation that plugs into the MVC framework. Chapters 7 thru 13 discusses the latest on Membership, Ajax, Routing, NuGet and the ASP.Net Web API. Chapters 12 (Dependency Injection) and 13 (Unit Testing) demonstrate a big competitive advantage of MVC with its ease of test-ability and plug-ability. Chapters 14 and 15 targets the advanced developer showcasing how to extend MVC to customize and replace every piece in the framework. In conclusion, I strongly recommend Professional ASP.NET MVC 4 as an excellent read for both developers already using MVC as well as those getting started with the framework. Many thanks to the Wiley/Wrox User Group Program for their support of our West Palm Beach Developers’ Group. You can access my reviews of books I recently read: Professional ASP.NET Design Patterns Professional WCF 4.0 Inside Windows Communication Foundation Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2008 series

• Internet Explorer 9 is coming Monday to a web near you

- by brian_ritchie
Internet Explorer 9 is finally here...well almost. Microsoft is releasing their new browser on March 14, 2011. IE9 has a number of improvements, including: Faster, Faster, Faster. Did I mention it is faster? With the new browsers coming out from Mozilla, Google, and Microsoft, there have been a flood of speed test coverage. Chrome has long held the javascript speed crown. But according to Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols over at ZDNET..."for the moment at least IE9 is actually the fastest browser I’ve tested to date." He came to this revelation after figuring out that the 32-bit version of IE9 has the new Chakra JIT (the 64-bit version doesn't). It also has a DirectX-based rendering engine so it can do cool tricks once reserved for desktop applications. Windows 7 Desktop Integration. Read my post for more details. Unfortantely, they didn't integrate my ideas...at least not yet :) Hot new UI. Ok, they "borrowed" some ideas from Chrome...but that is the best form of flattery. Standards Compliance. A real focus on HTML5 and CSS3. Definite goodness for developers. So, go get yourself some IE9 on Monday and enjoy!

• Chromebook C720 - issue suspending and booting

- by user72727
I recently bought an Acer C720 chromebook (Celeron, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD) with the intention of loading Linux and using it as a cheap development laptop while on my holiday. The installation sort of went ok but initially the trackpad didn't work so I ran a script that mostly fixed that. My current issues are: Booting: it still goes to the chrome "unknown os" white screen - I have to press ctrl L - then escape then 1 then wait for 30 secs while it seems to be searching for something. Then Ubunto loads up fine. Any idea how to fix this? Suspend: if I close the lid of the laptop then it doesn't seem to suspend properly. At least when I open the lid the screen appears to be on but the screen is blank with a cursor. Nothing responds on the keyboard and I have to hold the power down to restart it. The suspend from the top menu has the same issue. Moving windows: I don't have a mouse click button so how do I move windows around the screen? Launcher bar: I've set mine to auto hide (which it does) but what exactly do you have to do to get it back? I just repeatedly jab the mouse at the side of the screen and eventually it pops up. I don't mind starting all over again but obviously a quick fix is preferred ;) Mike Ubunto 14.04.1 LTS Kernel 3.13.0-32-generic PS Sorry for so many questions.

• Hijacking ASP.NET Sessions

- by Ricardo Peres
So, you want to be able to access other user’s session state from the session id, right? Well, I don’t know if you should, but you definitely can do that! Here is an extension method for that purpose. It uses a bit of reflection, which means, it may not work with future versions of .NET (I tested it with .NET 4.0/4.5). 1: public static class HttpApplicationExtensions 2: { 3: private static readonly FieldInfo storeField = typeof(SessionStateModule).GetField("_store", BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Instance); 4: 5: public static ISessionStateItemCollection GetSessionById(this HttpApplication app, String sessionId) 6: { 7: var module = app.Modules["Session"] as SessionStateModule; 8: 9: if (module == null) 10: { 11: return (null); 12: } 13: 14: var provider = storeField.GetValue(module) as SessionStateStoreProviderBase; 15: 16: if (provider == null) 17: { 18: return (null); 19: } 20: 21: Boolean locked; 22: TimeSpan lockAge; 23: Object lockId; 24: SessionStateActions actions; 25: 26: var data = provider.GetItem(HttpContext.Current, sessionId.Trim(), out locked, out lockAge, out lockId, out actions); 27: 28: if (data == null) 29: { 30: return (null); 31: } 32: 33: return (data.Items); 34: } 35: } As you can see, it extends the HttpApplication class, that is because we need to access the modules collection, for the Session module. Use with care!

• How do I require use of the 5 GHz band when connecting to a Wireless N access point?

- by cqcallaw
What is says in the topic: there's a Wireless N access point to which I'd like to connect using the 5 GHz band exclusively. How does one accomplish this? Using the directive band=a in the connection configuration file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections doesn't seem to affect anything (/var/log/syslog still shows attempts by wpa_supplicant to connect using the 2.4 GHz band), and running iwconfig wlan0 freq 5G per this question results in the following error: Error for wireless request "Set Frequency" (8B04) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. [Edit] I'm hoping the answer won't depend on the hardware in use, but here's some information about the hardware, just in case: System is an Asus ZenBook Prime UX31A-DB51, running Ubuntu 12.04. lspci output: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge DRAM Controller (rev 09) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) 00:04.0 Signal processing controller: Intel Corporation Device 0153 (rev 09) 00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Panther Point USB xHCI Host Controller (rev 04) 00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation Panther Point MEI Controller #1 (rev 04) 00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Panther Point USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 04) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Panther Point High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Panther Point PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev c4) 00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Panther Point PCI Express Root Port 2 (rev c4) 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Panther Point USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 04) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation Panther Point LPC Controller (rev 04) 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation Panther Point 6 port SATA Controller [AHCI mode] (rev 04) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation Panther Point SMBus Controller (rev 04) 00:1f.6 Signal processing controller: Intel Corporation Panther Point Thermal Management Controller (rev 04) 02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6235 (rev 24) The driver for the wireless interface is iwlwifi.

I recently switched to Ubuntu. I've been having a lot of internet troubles ever since. I used Windows 7 before. I've had trouble loading web pages, and it would take a solid minute or two to even start displaying anything. Why is this? How can I fix this? • How to debug lack of sound in Asus EEE PC

- by Kalmar
I have an Asus EEE PC 1225B with fresh Lubuntu 12.04. And no sound. It doesn't seem to be some common problem, so I have to make some research what's up. I tried running alsamixer, so I know I have Realtek ALC269VB with nothing muted unexpectedly. What can I do next to identify and solve the problem? Additional info: alsamixer shows two cards: HD-Audio Generic and HDA ATI-SB (Realtek ALC269VB); the first one is muted. ~$ aplay ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave aplay: main:682: blad otwierania audio: Nie ma takiego pliku ani katalogu The Polish part can be translated as "error opening audio: There is no such file or directory". ~$ sudo lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio" 00:01.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Wrestler HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6250/6310] Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. • SSIS Catalog: How to use environment in every type of package execution

- by Kevin Shyr
Here is a good blog on how to create a SSIS Catalog and setting up environments. http://sqlblog.com/blogs/jamie_thomson/archive/2010/11/13/ssis-server-catalogs-environments-environment-variables-in-ssis-in-denali.aspx Here I will summarize 3 ways I know so far to execute a package while using variables set up in SSIS Catalog environment. First way, we have SSIS project having reference to environment, and having one of the project parameter using a value set up in the environment called "Development". With this set up, you are limited to calling the packages by right-clicking on the packages in the SSIS catalog list and select Execute, but you are free to choose absolute or relative path of the environment. The following screenshot shows the 2 available paths to your SSIS environments. Personally, I use absolute path because of Option 3, just to keep everything simple for myself. The second option is to call through SQL Job. This does require you to configure your project to already reference an environment and use its variable. When a job step is set up, the configuration part will require you to select that reference again. This is more useful when you want to automate the same package that needs to be run in different environments. The third option is the most important to me as I have a SSIS framework that calls hundreds of packages. The main part of the stored procedure is in this post (http://geekswithblogs.net/LifeLongTechie/archive/2012/11/14/time-to-stop-using-ldquoexecute-package-taskrdquondash-a-way-to.aspx). But the top part had to be modified to include the logic to use environment reference. CREATE PROCEDURE [AUDIT].[LaunchPackageExecutionInSSISCatalog] @PackageName NVARCHAR(255) , @ProjectFolder NVARCHAR(255) , @ProjectName NVARCHAR(255) , @AuditKey INT , @DisableNotification BIT , @PackageExecutionLogID INT , @EnvironmentName NVARCHAR(128) = NULL , @Use32BitRunTime BIT = FALSE AS BEGIN TRY DECLARE @execution_id BIGINT = 0; -- Create a package execution IF @EnvironmentName IS NULL BEGIN EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[create_execution] @package_name=@PackageName, @execution_id=@execution_id OUTPUT, @folder_name=@ProjectFolder, @project_name=@ProjectName, @use32bitruntime=@Use32BitRunTime; END ELSE BEGIN DECLARE @EnvironmentID AS INT SELECT @EnvironmentID = [reference_id] FROM SSISDB.[internal].[environment_references] WITH(NOLOCK) WHERE [environment_name] = @EnvironmentName AND [environment_folder_name] = @ProjectFolder EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[create_execution] @package_name=@PackageName, @execution_id=@execution_id OUTPUT, @folder_name=@ProjectFolder, @project_name=@ProjectName, @reference_id=@EnvironmentID, @use32bitruntime=@Use32BitRunTime; END
