• What do I need to do to make sure my app launches as Admin?

  I'm writing an app that allows you to script the buttons from a wiimote into actions on your PC. It currently supports all of the features of the main remote control, except for the speaker. Now, I'm running in to trouble when I run it on Vista with UAC turned on. Any time a UAC'd window has focus, my app fails to move the mouse successfully. For instance, when an installer is run, I have to navigate it with the keyboard. Will running the app as administrator solve my problem? (At one point in time, I was able to successfully move the mouse over a UAC-password-entry box) How do I build a manifest that will tell windows to "run as administrator"? How do I embed this manifest into my app, if I'm strongly naming my assembly? How do I sign my application with an Authenticode cert? EDIT: Ok, so after some more extensive research, I have found: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb756929.aspx <requestedExecutionLevel level="asInvoker|highestAvailable|requireAdministrator" uiAccess="true|false"/> However, the article says: Applications with the uiAccess flag set to true must be Authenticode signed to start properly. In addition, the application must reside in a protected location in the file system. \Program Files\ and \windows\system32\ are currently the two allowable protected locations. • Form Validation using Java inside PHP

  I have a simple problem but no matter what I try I can't see to get it to work. I have a form on a php page and I need to validate the qty value on my form so that it doesn't exceed $qty (value pulled from mySQL) and is not less than zero. Sounds easy--hmm wish it were..lol! I had it checking if the value was numeric and in my attempts to make this work I even broke that--not a good morning..lol! • Book recommendation for Silverlight

  Hi there, yet another question for recommendations for a book on Silverlight. I look for a book that covers the UI and styling and, if possible, custom drawing and graphics. Very important for me is the style of the book - it should focus on the actual programming and not on where to click in Visual Studio to get things done. Let's take a fictional example for proper usage of the DataGrid control: Bad: To use the data grid, drag it from the toolbox onto the control. You can change the background color by clicking on “Background” in the properties. To define custom columns, click on columns and edit them in the configuration window that opens. Good: To use the DataGrid, you need a reference to the blah dll and declare the namespace in the XAML like this (blah), the data model should be like blah and if you want to define how the columns look like, you need to define them like this (more blah). And if you want to do this in C# because you for whatever reason aren’t able or willing to use XAML, this would look like blah. Bonus points for coverage of topics like how to manage resources (images/fonts) and internationalization. There are quite some snippets on how to do that on the internet but somehow each of them looks like they work but are not a proper way of doing it. cheers Mathias

• "Exclusive" DirectDraw palette isn't actually exclusive

  We're maintaining an old video game that uses a full-screen 256-color graphics mode with DirectDraw. The problem is, some applications running in the background sometimes try to change the system palette while the game is running, which results in corrupted graphics. We can (sometimes) detect when this happens by processing the WM_PALETTECHANGED message. A few update versions ago we added logging (just log the window title/class/process name), which helped users identify offending applications and close them. MSN Live Messenger was a common culprit. The problem got worse when we found out that Windows Vista (and 7) does it "by itself". The WM_PALETTECHANGED parameters point towards CSRSS and the desktop window. In Vista, a workaround that often worked was to open any folder (Computer, Documents, etc.) and leave it open while running the game. Sounds ridiculous, but it worked - in most cases. In Windows 7, not even this workaround worked any more. Users found that stopping some services (Windows Update and the indexing service) also resolved the problem on some configurations. Some time ago I just started trying random things in hope of finding a solution. I found that setting the GDI palette (using Create/SelectPalette) before setting the DirectDraw palette (using IDirectDrawPalette::SetEntries) would restore the palette after it became corrupted (WM_PALETTECHANGED handler). SetSystemPaletteUse and calling SetPalette on the primary surface helped some more. However, there is still perceivable flickering when an application tries to steal the palette, which is especially prominent during fades. Question: is there a way to get a "real" exclusive palette, which completely disallows other applications changing the Windows palette as long as our game retains focus?

• Detecting whether user stayed after prompting onBeforeUnload

  In a web app I'm working on, I'm capturing onBeforeUnload to ask the user whether he really wants to exit. Now, if he decides to stay, there are a number of things I'd like to do. What I'm trying to figure out is that he actually chose to stay. I can of course declare a SetTimeout for "x" seconds, and if that fires, then it would mean the user is still there (because we didn't get unloaded). The problem is that the user can take any time to decide whether to stay or not... I was first hoping that while the dialog was showing, SetTimeout calls would not fire, so I could set a timeout for a short time and it'd only fire if the user chose to stay. However, timeouts do fire while the dialog is shown, so that doesn't work. Another idea I tried is capturing mouseMoves on the window/document. While the dialog is shown, mouseMoves indeed don't fire, except for one weird exception that really applies to my case, so that won't work either. Can anyone think of other way to do this? Thanks! (In case you're curious, the reason capturing mouseMove doesn't work is that I have an IFrame in my page, containing a site from another domain. If at the time of unloading the page, the focus is within the IFrame, while the dialog shows, then I get the MouseMove event firing ONCE when the mouse moves from inside the IFrame to the outside (at least in Firefox). That's probably a bug, but still, it's very likely that'll happen in our case, so I can't use this method).

• Implementing Model-level caching

  I was posting some comments in a related question about MVC caching and some questions about actual implementation came up. How does one implement a Model-level cache that works transparently without the developer needing to manually cache, yet still remains efficient? I would keep my caching responsibilities firmly within the model. It is none of the controller's or view's business where the model is getting data. All they care about is that when data is requested, data is provided - this is how the MVC paradigm is supposed to work. (Source: Post by Jarrod) The reason I am skeptical is because caching should usually not be done unless there is a real need, and shouldn't be done for things like search results. So somehow the Model itself has to know whether or not the SELECT statement being issued to it worthy of being cached. Wouldn't the Model have to be astronomically smart, and/or store statistics of what is being most often queried over a long period of time in order to accurately make a decision? And wouldn't the overhead of all this make the caching useless anyway? Also, how would you uniquely identify a query from another query (or more accurately, a resultset from another resultset)? What about if you're using prepared statements, with only the parameters changing according to user input? Another poster said this: I would suggest using the md5 hash of your query combined with a serialized version of your input arguments. This would require twice the number of serialization options. I was under the impression that serialization was quite expensive, and for large inputs this might be even worse than just re-querying. And is the minuscule chance of collision worth worrying about? Conceptually, caching in the Model seems like a good idea to me, but it seems in practicality the developer should have direct control over caching and write it into the controller. Thoughts/ideas? Edit: I'm using PHP and MySQL if that helps to narrow your focus.

  So I am trying to make a tabs in a menu but cant make the whole width of each of the tabs 219px. it only allows me to make the li 219 but I wanna make the li a 219px. I cant seem to figure it out. • Single developer, project organization

  I am looking for a good (and free) way to organize some of my personal projects. I am saying "organize" because I'm not sure, if the standard project management software solutions are exactly what I am looking for and especially something what I, as a single developer, need. In general, I just want to keep my progress of my projects organized in some way. I would like to be able to keep track of milestones and split those into multiple smaller tasks, so I can keep track of my progress. So some task/issue based system would probably be good, especially as I also want to keep track of issues/bugs with specific versions (although I alone will create those issues). I am and will be the only developer on those projects, so it doesn't matter if the software is offline or online, and I also don't need any collaboration features (like commenting on things, or assigning tasks to other developers etc). But if there is a good software that fits my needs, and in addition it has those things, I don't really care. After all it's easy enough to not use available features. Many online solutions also offer integrated code hosting. I am using git internally, but I don't plan to push any of the code, so such a feature is not needed either. In case of online solutions however I would like the projects to be closed to the public (some of the online utilities only offer open source projects for free and require payments for private projects). I have looked at some project management solutions already, I also read some similar questions here on SO. But given that I'm a single developer, my focus is probably a bit different as when others ask for a huge distributed software that supports many developers and different collaboration features. Some standard answers such as Trac (which also only supports one project), Redmine and FogBUGZ look interesting, but are a bit off my interest (although you may change my mind on that :P). Currently, I'm looking at Indefero which doesn't look too bad. But what do you think?

• WPF PasswordBox Input Panel Icon Not Appearing: Better Workaround?

  Hello, There is a known issue in WPF where the Input Panel icon does not appear when you set focus on a PasswordBox control. I'm in need of a workaround for this, but the one suggested -- using the ITextInputPanel API -- does not quite cut it for me. Fist of all, the API works with Windows Forms controls and alternatively accepts control handles. Since WPF controls are not handle based, and they are not Forms controls, this is not quite suitable. I tried hosting a Forms control on my WPF page and that worked on the Windows XP Tabled PC (albeit with some COM exceptions) but, since there is no PasswordBox in Forms, I had to stick with a regular textbox, which is not what I need. Alternatively, using the VisualTreeHelper to get a handle on the control did not work, either. The API, according to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms699559%28VS.85%29.aspx, is only compatible with Vista. I'm dealing with Windows XP tablets. I understand that the IPenInput API can be used as an alternative, but it is now deprecated. Can someone please suggest something? I really need to fix this issue. Thanks in advance!

• MS Query Analizer/Management Studio replacement?

  I've been using SQL Server since version 6.5 and I've always been a bit amazed at the fact that the tools seem to be targeted to DBAs rather than developers. I liked the simplicity and speed of the Query Analizer for example, but hated the built-in editor, which was really no better than a syntax coloring-capable Notepad. Now that we have Management Studio the management part seems a bit better but from a developer standpoint the tools is even worse. Visual Studio's excellent text editor... without a way to customize keyboard bindings!? Don't get me started on how unusable is the tree-based management hierarchy. Why can't I re-root the tree on a list of stored procs for example the way the Enterprise Manager used to allow? Now I have a treeview that needs to be scrolled horizontally, which makes it eminently useless. The SQL server support in Visual Studio is fantastic for working with stored procedures and functions, but it's terrible as a general ad hoc data query tool. I've tried various tools over the years but invariably they seem to focus on the management side and shortchange the developer in me. I just want something with basic admin capabilities, good keyboard support and requisite DDL functionality (ideally something like the Query Analyzer). At this point I'm seriously thinking of using vim+sqlcmd and a console... I'm that desperate :) Those of you who work day in and day out with SQL Server and Visual Studio... do you find the tools to be adequate? Have you ever wished they were better and if you have found something better, could you share please? Thanks!

• Problem with UserControl with custom Dependency Property

  Hi, I'm writing a user control with a dependency property for a search text called SearchText. It is a dependency property because I want to allow consumers of the control to use data binding. The user control contains a WPF TextBox where the user can enter the search text. I could use data binding to connect the SearchText dependency property of the user control with the Text dependency property of the TextBox, but this binding only fires when the text box looses input focus. What I want is SearchText to be updated after every change of Text. So I have added a TextChanged event handler to the user control where I set SearchText to the value of Text. My Problem is, the SearchText binding doesn't work, the source never gets updated. What am I doing wrong? • generating images with php based on css3 gradient settings?

  Hi, Does anyone know if there is a php library, or if there isnt, have any input on how one would go about generating an image via php, from basic HTML element input settings, and CSS 3 gradient parameters. To give an example on why this would be useful, I have found as of a couple days ago, that laying out the wireframe for a webpage using basic Css3 gradient styling speeds up my design and development time by, well, alot. I cant design from photoshop, Ill spend hours tweaking stupid little things that only lead to me tweaking more stupid little things to compensate for stupid little changes. -- So, I had an epiphany to stop using photoshop until the end, and just focus on the main styling of elements, text-shadow, and borders for highlights, and I feel I am able to make super clean, more focused layout by being more restricted to the basics of graphic design with just css. Anyways, so Im planning on after I have the layouts done, to then recreate the graphics in photoshop, so that every browser is able to render the images. This wont take long, but as far as repeating it goes, if I could just do it with PHP, that would be incredible. For instance, take this style for example, which renders a clean looking ipad/pod ish menu/button gradient. So ya, I know PHP has some image generation capabilities but I dont know to what extent, any input on the most effective way to go about doing this or whether it already exists, would be appreciated!

But when the grid is dropped on a TabControl tabpage, the ctrl-tab looks very different to the sub above. e.keycode is seen as controlkey {17} I realize that by default cntrl-Tab moves between tabpages. I need to override this behavior. My thought is I probably need a subclass of the tabControl which will pass the keycombo through just as the form does but I confess to being clueless as to how to accomplish that. I tried to override the onkeydown of a tabcontrol subclass and just issuing a return and not and base call to onkeydown if the ctrl-tab combo was pressed but it seemed to see the e.keycode as controlkey as well. FWIW I tried a different combination like ctrl-E and got pretty much the same result with focus disappearing from the grid but not going anywhere I could detect. The sub still saw the e.control as controlkey. Oddly, ctrl-X, ctrl-A etc all work in the grid and a ctrl-Delete combo I put in the subclass for deleting a row works fine. Once again - grid directly on form and it all works. I'm definitely over my head on this one. Guidance much appreciated. vb or c# fine. TIA

• Has any one used client_side_validations gem with Chosen.js dropdown?

  I am using chosen.js (http://harvesthq.github.com/chosen/). I was wondering if anyone has been able to use chosen select boxes and client_side_validations together. The issue is that when we use chosen it hides the original select element and renders its own dropdown instead, and when we focus out the validation isn't called and also when the validation message is shown it is shown with the original select element so positioning of the error isnt also correct. What could be a good way to handle this, My be we can change some code inside ActionView::Base.field_error_proc which currently looks something like ActionView::Base.field_error_proc = Proc.new do |html_tag, instance| unless html_tag =~ /^<label/ %{<div class="field_with_errors">#{html_tag}<label for="#{instance.send(:tag_id)}" class="message">#{instance.error_message.first}</label></div>}.html_safe else %{<div class="field_with_errors">#{html_tag}</div>}.html_safe end end Any ideas ? • binding nested json object value to a form field

  I am building a dynamic form to edit data in a json object. First, if something like this exists let me know. I would rather not build it but I have searched many times for a tool and have found only tree like structures that require entering quotes. I would be happy to treat all values as strings. This edit functionality is for end users so it needs to be easy an not intimidating. So far I have code that generates nested tables to represent a json object. For each value I display a form field. I would like to bind the form field to the associated nested json value. If I could store a reference to the json value I would build an array of references to each value in a json object tree. I have not found a way to do that with javascript. My last resort approach will be to traverse the table after edits are made. I would rather have dynamic updates but a single submit would be better than nothing. Any ideas? // the json in files nests only a few levels. • Separating Javascript functions

  I am wondering how javascripts get included in a jsp - can we put any code which the jsp will recognize and not just javascript code only in the .js file? I have some common javascript code which needs to get executed on different pages, so I decided to place it in its own separate .js file and include it on all jsps which call that function. The js function now refers to a key from a properties file and some other non-javascript code: function openPrivacyStmntWindow(){ var url = <h:outputText escape="false" value="\"#{urls.url_privacyStatement}\";" /> newwindow=window.open(url,'Terms','height=600,width=800,left=300,top=100,scrollbars=1'); newwindow.focus(); return false; } This function worked just fine when it was included in the jsp itself. Now that I have separated it into its own file it doesnt, do I need to include the properties bundle in this file. The value="\"#{urls.url_privacyStatement}\";" is referring to a bundle called "urls" which has a key called "url_privacyStatement" Also in Line 1 var url = <h:outputText escape="false" value="\"#{urls.url_privacyStatement}\";" /> the <h:outputText escape="false" ... /> will it cause any issues? • What is the easiest way to read wav-files using Python [summary]?

  I want to use Python to access a wav-file and write its content in a form which allows me to analyze it (let's say arrays). I heard that "audiolab" is a suitable tool for that (it transforms numpy arrays into wav and vica versa). I have installed the "audiolab" but I had a problem with the version of numpy (I could not "from numpy.testing import Tester"). I had 1.1.1. version of numpy. I have installed a newer version on numpy (1.4.0). • Programmatically change an EditorGrid's cell value

  Hi, I have an Editor Grid where if a specific cell is in focus (is being edited), a window containing a tree panel pops up allowing the user to choose a node from the treepanel as the new value of the cell. This way, the user isn't actually editing the cell in question, but is using the window to choose the new value. However, I am having difficulties setting the value of the cell in question programmatically. • How to disable selective keys on the keyboard?

  I'd like to write an application which disables certain keys on the keyboard while it's working. More specifically I'm interested in keys that might make the application loose focus (like ALT+TAB, WinKey, Ctrl+Shift+Esc, etc.) The need for this is has to do with babies/animals bashing wildly at the keyboard. :) My first idea was to use SetWindowsHookEx, however I ran into a problem. Since I need a global hook, the procedure would have to reside in a .DLL which would get injected in all active applications. But a .DLL can be either 64-bit or 32-bit, not both. And on a 64-bit system there are both types of applications. I guess then that I must write two copies of the hook .DLL - one for 32-bit and the other for 64-bit. And then I'd also have to launch two copies of the application as well, because the application first has to load the DLL itself before it can pass it on to SetWindowsHookEx(). Sounds pretty clumsy and awkward. Is there perhaps a better way? Or maybe I've misunderstood something?

• is there a Universal Model for languages?

  Many programming languages share generic and even fairly universal features. For example, if you compared Java, VB6, .NET, PHP, Python, then you would find common functions such as control structures, numeric and string manipulation, etc. What has been done to define these features at a meta-language (or language-agnostic) level? UML offers a descriptive reference of software in every aspect, but the real-world focus seems to be data processes. Is UML relevant? I'm not asking "Why we don't have a single language that replaces the current plethora." We need many different tools (at least in this eon). I'm not asking that all languages fit a template -- assembly vs. compiled languages are different enough to make that unfeasible (and some folks call HTML a language, though I wouldn't). Any attempt would start with a properly narrow scope. In line with this, I wouldn't expect the model to cover even a small selection with full validity. I would expect however that such a model could be used to transpose from one language to another (with limited goals -- think jist translation).
