  • An experiment: unlimited free trial

    The .NET Demon team have just implemented an experiment that is quite a break from Red Gate's normal business model. Instead of the tool expiring after the trial period, it now continues to work, but with a new message that appears after the tool has saved you a certain amount of time. The rationale is that a user that stops using .NET Demon because the trial expired isn't doing anyone any good. We'd much rather people continue using it forever, as long as everyone that finds it useful and can afford it still pays for it. Hopefully the message appearing is annoying enough to achieve that, but not for people to uninstall it. It's true that many companies have tried it before with mixed results, but we have a secret weapon. The perfect nag message? The neat thing for .NET Demon is that we can easily measure exactly how much time .NET Demon has saved you, in terms of unnecessary project builds that Visual Studio would have done. When you press F5, the message shows you the time saved, and then makes you wait a shorter time before starting your application. Confronted with the truth about how amazing .NET Demon is, who can do anything but buy it? The real secret though, is that while you wait, .NET Demon gives you entertainment, in the form of a picture of a cute kitten. I've only had time to embed one kitten so far, but the eventual aim is for a random different kitten to appear each time. The psychological health benefits of a dose of kittens in the daily life of the developer are obvious. My only concern is that people will complain after paying for .NET Demon that the kittens are gone.

    What are the benefits and drawbacks of working as an in-house developer versus working as a consultant and vice versa? I am pretty sure both breeds can be found on these forums and I hope you are willing to share your experience. Edit: Let me clarify the question. I wonder how the experience is like being a developer. For example: Being an in-house developer, you are able to learn from your mistakes. Being a consultant is often more challenging, because there is more variety in the problems you have to solve. PS: Although I realise that this is a subjective question, I don't necessarily see it as one of those bad-subjective questions.

  • 2D management game [on hold]

    Very newbie question but I have a game idea in mind. It will be 2d and data centric, like football manager. However I am struggling to find a platform that would suit. I am an experienced line of business developer so am happy to write code, but I would like a platform that does some of the leg work for me so was avoiding OpenGL. I would also like to be able deploy to iOS, android, windows and OS X. What are the options? To be more clear, the game is not a normal platform or shooter type game, so game maker is likely to be way too basic and unity seems a little over the top (though I am not sure if the GUI options would fit?). The majority of the game is more like business screens just displaying data and having buttons to click. Are there options for this type of game (May help to look at football manager)?

  • Advice on software infrastructure for a FLOSS bounty site

    I am planning to set up a simple web site where people can offer bounties for work on FLOSS projects. Unfortunately I have no experience at web development (I am a C/C++ developer), so I was hoping someone might be able to suggest out-of-the-box packages (preferably Debian ones) I could use to build the site from. My idea of how the site would work is to keep things as simple as possible. The person proposing a bounty would enter a description with relevant links (particularly to a bugtracker entry with the project the work is to be done on, where the real discussion and work would take place) and information and place an initial contribution. Other people would be able to add (donate, not pledge) contributions, but any discussion would take place on the project's bugtracker. I am also planning to run a mailing list rather than a forum (at least initially), so that is not a requirement. Paypal seems to me to be the handiest payment mechanism. So overall what I need is probably a simple interface with Paypal integration and a simple database backend. I hope this is the right place for my question, if not I would be grateful for pointers to somewhere better. And of course, this is purely about the technical side, though I am more than happy to discuss other aspects of the project elsewhere.

  • Best accounting software for freelance/contractor programmer? [closed]

    I know this isn't exactly a programming question but I am hoping to find some programmers who freelance or do contractor work in the US. I have started to work on side jobs and have been billing my clients using Paypal. I then would store those records in a Google excel doc but realize this will get out of hand as time goes on and am looking for a good solution. I am no accountant so I am not sure of everything I would need but I am guessing basic invoicing, expenses, reporting, integration with paypal, etc.. Any contractors or freelancers in here could recommend what they use? I have researched a few but would like to hear what other people are using and how it is working out for them.   • How to access Windows Azure management portal from Linux/Ubuntu

    Good day everyone! I have only Ubuntu/Debian machines in my office. I've registered for Windows Azure platform and try to enter their management portal (https://windows.azure.com/default.aspx), but it requires Microsoft Silverlight. I've tried installing latest Moonlight plugin availabing for Ubuntu 11.04, but without any success - after login I see blank page and nothing more (tried both firefox 7.0.1 and chromium-14). Does anyone know how to enter Microsoft Azure management portal from Ubuntu 11.04 or any other linux? Thank you, Zaar

    I asked this question in SuperUser one hour ago, then I know this community so I moved the question here... I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 in a physical x86-64 machine. Today Update Manager reminded me that there are some updates to install and I confirmed the action. I should had read the update list but I didn't. I can only remember there is an update about cups. After the upgrading, Update Manager requires a restart and I confirmed too. But after the restart, the computer can't start up. There are errors in the console. In the beginning of our careers we simply don't know how to sell ourselves to our employers, and random guy #57 (who is a programmer, but not as good as you - technically) ends up getting a raise/promotion just because he knows how to communicate and market himself better than you. Many have probably seen this happen in the past, and most certainly many more will in the future. What kind of skill/ability (either technical, or of other nature) do you think is relevant to point out when doing a job interview or asking for a raise, besides listing all the programming languages and libraries you know?

  • How to turn a pdf into a text searchable pdf?

    I have a number of scanned documents in pdf and I want to be able to search them. How can I do that? Essentially I have to OCR the pdf and then blend the extracted text back into a new pdf. I have unsuccesfully tried pdfocr (which gives me this issue: https://github.com/gkovacs/pdfocr/issues/7) pdfsandwich (of which the software center says it is a poor package and I should not install it) Is there a software package I am unaware of? Or a script that does this?

    I have sent out emails to my 6.2k subscribers through iKode Newsletter Server. And about 50 to be considered as spam. It is less than 1%. It is amazing! The web based email marketing software of iKode also provides double opt-in subscription form which is effective to target special audience. However, if I want to import mailing list to this software, I need to add the address one by one, which is a waste of time. Does iKode provides mass account import ability? Or just need to upload a mailing list file?

At present, we are trying to define: Beginners Intermediates Advanced Experts (and/or Masters) Similar to an apprenticeship, you would need to demonstrate specific skills to achieve different levels. Right now, we have identified Beginner programming skills as: Object - method, attributes, inheritance Variable - math, string, array, boolean - all are objects Basic arithmetic functions - precedence of functions String manipulation Looping - flow control Conditionals - boolean algebra This is a first attempt, and it is a challenge since we know the natural tension between programming and software engineering. How would you create such a skills-based ranking for JavaScript in this manner?     i installed Linux Ubuntu after my win os went totally dead by fatal blue screen. cannot reboot or install form CD ROM or get safe mode i installed Linux Ubuntu i still unable to install my wireless stick usb modem to connect and surf the Internet wireless form my provider. i use wireless network from neighborhood And i find it difficult to download and install and save porg and application from the INTERNET like skype and real player and others. it is different form windows and not that easy to use. i click to download for example and find real player but when click on it it opens as text file only and i cannot use it as it should be used for video and download and record from you tube. how to do it. and is there with Linux Ubuntu similar prog to download and record and save from you tube as in windows? Is there any trick to restart or reboot windows OS from the dead. can i use linux to reboot windows or to import my files from the blue screen stopped windows7?     What do you do if the old key your landlord gave you is poor fit for your apartment’s lock? If you’re the geeky sort, you build a wireless unlocking module to do the work for you. Instructables user Rybitski writes: The key to my apartment never worked quite right because it is a copy of a copy of a copy. I am fairly certain that the dead bolt is original to the building and the property manager seems to have lost the original key years ago. As a result unlocking the door was always a pain. Changing the lock wasn’t an option, but eliminating the need to use a key was. To that end, he built the device seen in the video above.     I'm about to develop a web site for a new client. It's not going to be very intense, but one requirement is that, if possible, the client wants to be able to manage the photo gallery themselves. Since they are not technically savvied at all, I was wondering what utilities exist that provide a GUI for users to log in to manage photos. Can anyone make a recontamination? I haven't purchased the web hosting yet, so if your answer requires a specific type of host server don't worry, I am open to options.
