• Windows 7 "Could not reconnect all network drives" on boot

  Windows 7 won't reconnect to my network drives on startup. Once it is done booting opening Windows Explorer and clicking each share will mount them. Windows 7 Enterprise N Service Pack 1 I have attempted formatting the windows machine - first thing done to machine was to map the network drives, upon reboot they were disconnected. It is running on an Crucial M4 64gb SSD. The host of the network shares is a Ubuntu-Server machine connected through a gigabit switch. A modem provides dhcp, although both these machines have static IP's defined. It won't reconnect the drives regardless of whether they're SAMBA shares or NFS shares - therefore I believe it's an issue with the windows machine. Ubuntu 11.10 (GNU/Linux 3.0.0-12-server x86_64) I've tried using ip address instead of netbios name for mapping shares on the windows machine, Also tried setting EnableLinkedConnections=1 gpedit.msc Computer Configuration - Administrative Templates - System-Logon - always wait for the network at computer startup and logon = yes

• after install python 2.7.3 yum is broken

  i installed libxml2-2.9.0 and libxslt-1.1.27 then yum is broken any yum command that i ran i got the result of : There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. • Why is the size of windows off by 226x238 if defined via the Window Rules?

  I have installed Sawfish 1.8.2 from source on my new Ubuntu 12.04 installation following the Debian instructions, but I had this problem also with the stock 1.5.3. Whenever I define dimensions in the Window Rules for a window, the size is off by exactly 226x238 pixels, which means that 100x100 turns into 326x328. That's a very odd behavior, given that Sawfish is saving and loading the dimensions of the windows correctly (if saved via the window menu). Some additional system information: $ uname -a Linux Dagon 3.2.0-24-generic-pae #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 21 18:54:21 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux $ sawfish --version sawfish version 1.8.2 nvidia proprietary driver, 9600GT Two monitors, 1920x1080 + 1440x900 in one session. Positionng the windows is working fine, only the dimensions are off by that odd number. Does somebody have an idea why?

• Excluding certain file types in wget

  I have been using wget for a while now to mirror files from an ftp server to a local folder. My wget command is as follows: wget -mirror -w 1 -p -nH -P /var/www/ ftp://my-ftp-server However, I just noticed that it is copying over a .listing file for every folder that it visits. So, even if nothing has been changed on the ftp server, a .listing file will always be copied. My understanding is that the .listing file is created when wget opens the ftp session. Is there a way to avoid this? I've tried the -R option (e.g. -R .listing) but this didn't help. • Does exportfs disrupt users already utilizing those filesystems?

  I need to modify a servers /etc/exports file to export to an additional host. After modifying this file, for it to take effect (i.e. for the additional host to have access to the designated filesystem), I believe I have to run "exportfs" on the server exporting the filesystem. Does this disrupt users who are currently using filesystems that are exported from that serving host? I'm hoping to add this new host "silently", without disruption. Any additional advice related to this, common traps, things to be careful of, etc. would be appreciated if you have any. • X server not starting up after new kernel compilation

  I have compiled the Kernel on my 64-bit Debian XPS Studio 1340 Dell system. srikanth@debian:~ - 05:40:52 PM - $ uname -a Linux debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Mar 22 17:26:33 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux Kernel version that I have used and compiled from kernel.org is 2.6.35.13 I have nvidia installed on old kernel. I got the old config and I used the same config to compile the new kernel. Everything went well and I got two debian packages ( image and headers ) which I have installed on my system. When I select the new kernel on the boot menu and I go into it, the X server is not starting up possibly because I have to "rebuild" ( not sure how to do that ) according to this link: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/x-server-not-starting-after-kernel-compilation-605265/ Can you suggest how to do the rebuild on nvidia module so that I can start x ( without seeing any blank screen or error saying nvidia module is missing ) ? • What's the typical latency for key strokes using an ssh connection on a local wifi network?

  I develop software on a Macbook Air 1.6 Ghz but find running Rails test suites and generators on this computer very slow. I'm thinking about buying a Linux tower to put on my local wireless network to do my Rails development on. I would want to use my Macbook Air and ssh into the Linux box and do my development with Gnu Screen, vim, etc. Can I expect the keystroke and echo latency for a ssh session between two machines on a local wireless network to be negligible? Does anyone develop using this kind of local setup?

• modprobe not found at all

  I know that a lot of people had problems finding modprobe which was mostely due to an unconfigured $PATH. This time however I logged into a machine (Linux mymachine 2.6.32-6-pve #1 SMP Mon Jan 23 08:27:52 CET 2012 i686 GNU/Linux with root rights) and modprobe wasn't found at all. This are the steps I have taken so far: - which modprobe => no results - locate modprobe => no results - my $PATH = /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11: - find / -name "modprobe*" => /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe - cat /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe => /sbin/modprobe - /sbin/modprobe => no such file or directory Ass you can see no modprobe at all. Does anyone else has a suggestion/ sollution so I can use modprobe?

  tl;dr: will `wget --no-parrent -r ' download from a directory above the given url's directory? when using wget to download, say images, recursively from example.com/a/b with the -r and -np options, will a picture that is under example.com/a/c/ be downloaded when example.com/a/b/ delivers a html-file containing a link to the picture? if so, how do i get all pictures, that are in a folder and it's subfolders and only those? the description of the option --no-parent says "Do not ever ascend to the parent directory when retrieving recursively". anyway directory browsing delivers a link to the parent directory, which wget will follow, despite mentioned option. now what did i miss? edit: using GNU Wget 1.12

• Disable Thunderbird "failed to connect" notifications

  My network manager doesn't start until I log in, so for the first ten seconds or so after I login I have no Internet connection. The problem is that I have Thunderbird set to automatically start on login, so it helpfully tells me it "failed to connect" every time I log in. Also, my Internet connection isn't too reliable, so I sometimes get those messages even when I'm supposedly connected. Is there any way to disable these notifications, while still allowing the ones about new mail? • Deleting slow on X11 emacs

  I'm running GNU Emacs 21.4.1 on a (remote) remote Linux ((CentOS) box, using my MacBook as the X-server. Works fine, unless I try to delete a word, line, or region. Then it locks up for 30 seconds or so. It sounds like a minor thing, but you realize how often you do a delete when you have to stop for 30 seconds every time. My theory is that Emacs is trying to put the text in the X-server cut-and-paste buffer, which is trying to put it in the OSX cut-and-paste buffer and somewhere along the way, the process is blocked until it times out. (My only evidence for this theory is (a) copy-region behaves the same way and (b) deleted text doesn't show up in the buffer.) Any suggestions appreciated. Edit: (setq interprogram-cut-function nil) fixed me right up. Which makes perfect sense. Thanks, Trey.

• Raid system fails to boot after moving from 2.6 kernel to 3.5

  I'm running Gentoo Linux with a custom compiled kernel and I've just migrated from a 2.6 kernel to a 3.5. As my HD's are on RAID 0 mode I use a custom initrd file in order to be able to boot. While kernel 2.6 is able to boot without problems the new 3.5 compiled kernel fails to boot complaining about no block devices found. After taking a look at initrd.cpio contained scripts I can see the failure message is given by mdadm tool. Does anyone has a clue about that? Edit: this morning i noticed there was some kind of issue on my old initrd which works fine for 2.6 kernels, so created a new initrd which works fine and let me to boot into GNU/Gentoo Linux with same 3.5 bzImage. • PHP Requests Being Blocked After Making About 25 in Ten Minutes

  We have an administrative portal where we run PHP functions through a Javascript portal using ajax for administrative purposes. For example, we might have a function called updateAllDatabaseEntries() which would call AJAX functions in rapid succession, with those functions each executing numerous SQL queries. The problem is after making several successive requests from the same computer (not an excessive amount, maybe 30 in ten minutes) the system will stop responding to any PHP, HTTP requests ETC ONLY from my computer. From other computers in the office the panel can still be accessed, and access is restored to this computer after about 15 minutes. We believe this is not a glitch but some kind of security feature built into our server, possibly relating to Suhosin and likely well-intentioned but currently preventing us from running our system administration. I'm setting up a vsftpd server on: Linux 2.6.32-26-server #48-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 24 10:28:32 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux When I set chroot_local_user=YES, there is no effect (I can still see / when I log in). There is nothing in syslog or /var/log/vsftpd.log to indicate what's wrong. I know that I'm editing the right conf file and that other settings do come into effect when I restart the daemon, because these work: ssl_enable=YES force_local_data_ssl=YES force_local_logins_ssl=YES Any idea what's wrong? • Emacs: Changing the location of auto-save files

  I've currently got: (setq backup-directory-alist `((".*" . ,temporary-file-directory))) (setq auto-save-file-name-transforms `((".*" ,temporary-file-directory t))) in my .emacs, but that doesn't seem to have changed where auto-save files get saved (it has changed where backup files get saved. M-x describe-variable shows that temporary-file-directory is set to /tmp/, but when I edit a file called testing.md and have unsaved changes, I get a file called .#testing.md in the same directory. How can I make that file go somewhere else (e.g. /tmp/)? I've had no luck with these suggestions, so any suggestions welcome! If it helps, I'm on GNU Emacs 23.3.1, running Ubuntu.

  I have a TCP connection (SSH session to some computer for example) Network suddenly goes down and drops all packets (disconnected cable, out of range). TCP resends packets again and again, retrying with increasing delays. I see the problem and plug the cable back (or restore network somehow). TCP connection finally successfully resends some packet and continues. The problem is that I need to wait for a some timeout on point 5. I want to use my opened SSH session now and not wait for 5-10 seconds until it finds out that connection is working again. How to force all TCP connections to resend data without delays in GNU/Linux?

• Windows 7 is swallowing a keystroke combination

  I'm using the gnu emacs editor under windows 7. I would like to bind a particular keystroke combination to an editor command. That combination is "control key" + ")", i.e., "control key" + "shift key" + "0". However, it appears this keystroke combination is being swallowed by the OS somehow. Using emacs's "view-lossage" feature indicates that it is never seeing the key. This happens even in safe mode. It does not happen under windows XP. Anyone know of a way to fix / diagnose what's happening?

  When I press Ctrl-C in any pseudoterminal (xterm, gnome-terminal, rxvt, text console and SSH) in Karmic Koala, the string ^C gets echoed to the terminal in Ubuntu Karmic Koala. This hasn't happened in Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. I'd like to get rid of the extra ^C. Example: $ cat foo foo ^C $ _ I got the above by typing C, A, T, Enter, F, O, O, Enter, Ctrl-C. • Getting started with VNC

  I have subscribed to a VPS service for the purpose of running some remote applications. To do this I'm going to need a remote desktop of one sort or another. With this in mind it was suggested that I try Ubuntu. The installation that was prepared for me was Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit (Ubuntu 11.10 (GNU/Linux 2.6.18-348.4.1.el5.028stab107.1 x86_64)) From here I used apt-get install ubuntu-desktop which completed successfully. I rebooted the machine and reconnected via ssh. When I attempt to connect from TightVNC on my Windows machine I get a message about the session being actively refused. What should I do to confirm the service is running? Do I need to setup a firewall rule to allow the ports to pass through? (I am a linux newb so explicitness is appreciated)

• How to run statically linked programs on a shell account?

  I have a shell account where I am not allowed to compile anything. There are however tools I need to run, some very simple ones like Midnight Commander, mcedit, most, jed I am trying to find a staically linked version that "just works" in my shell. Could anyone give me any advice on where I could find statically builds? I have not been able to find it with google. I could compile it myself, but I would have to find out which headers I need to compile for. I have never tried to do it before, so any help would be greatly apprechiated!
