• Making profit from a social network

  This follows similar questions but I'd like to see if anything particular comes out of it due to the nature of site. In short, I've taken up the role of webmaster for a small social network site and wish to make it profitable to at least cover the running costs. The site is linked to a commerce and presents are offered to members according to the number of points they've accumulated through various actions. The site is running on shared hosting so it's probably dirt cheap but the presents can be expensive as a whole and some money has already been invested into the project. One idea I have is to seek some sponsors that would be willing to offer presents or special offers in return for publicity. I don't know if this will be easy or not. I'm also looking into adapting hosting to perhaps move static files to a cheaper online storage medium (see Ideas for reducing storage needs and/or costs (lots of images)). Other suggestions are welcome.

• Enabling Multi-touch features of the Apple Magic Mouse on Ubuntu 12.04

  I want to write a simple app that uses Apple's Magic Trackpad, nothing special, just so that it recognizes atleast one gesture. The thing is, Ubuntu itself doesnt really recognize this device. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 and by default the device works with 1 finger, but without tap-click or doubletap, 3 fingers move the window and 3 finger spread makes it fullscreen. I managed to enable 2 finger scrolling with "xinput set-prop 8 'Two-Finger Scrolling' 1 1", but thats about it. No other gestures work, ginn doesnt start, giesview detects the device but doesnt respond to any of the gestures, and touchegg doesnt start either. I tried example apps from qt that come with ubuntu but they dont work. So... what do i do? i tried using qt but all i get from the app is "Got touch without getting TouchBegin for id XX" what else can i use to get my app to work with multitouch devices?

• Can't enable Bluetooth 13.10

  I'm a new user to Ubuntu. I previously installed Xubuntu 13.04 on my Compaq nx8420 and was able to use Bluetooth with no issues. I recently performed a clean install of Ubuntu 13.10 (not Xubuntu), and now can't enable bluetooth. I go to the default Bluetooth app, move the slider to 'On' and it slides straight back to 'Off'. Do I need to install any extra packages or use an alternative app to get Bluetooth working? I can't think of a reason why it would work in Xubuntu 13.04, but not Ubuntu 13.10. Thanks in advance for any help. Zac

  I want to set anchor point for the sprite like cocos2d has done for their implementation. I do not found any thing like that in andengine so please provide guidance on that. I want to move the sprite on touch so I use following code but that does not work for me. super.setPosition(pX - this.getWidthScaled() / 2, pY - this.getHeightScaled() / 2); Because I touch on the corner of the image but automatically it comes at center of the image because of above code. I want to remain the touch at desire position and drag it. For me the anchor point became useful. But I don't found anything in andengine.

• No Window Options in Cairo Dock

  I'm not even sure how to describe this properly. I'm running Cairo Dock on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and I've noticed that I no longer have the top bar of my windows. I mean, I have the bar itself, but it's empty aside from the name of the window and the close / resize boxes. For instance, a simple Nautilus window would have, when you move the cursor to the top bar, a list of options such as View / Edit etc. I have nothing like that for any window or application. It's just solid black. This is a huge problem and I'm not sure what the issue is. Has anyone else experienced this?

• Dynamic vs Statically typed languages for websites

  Wanted to hear what others thought about this statement: I’ll contrast that with building a website. When rendering web pages, often you have very many components interacting on a web page. You have buttons over here and little widgets over there and there are dozens of them on a webpage, as well as possibly dozens or hundreds of web pages on your website that are all dynamic. With a system with a really large surface area like that, using a statically typed language is actually quite inflexible. I would find it painful probably to program in Scala and render a web page with it, when I want to interactively push around buttons and what-not. If the whole system has to be coherent, like the whole system has to type check just to be able to move a button around, I think that can be really inflexible. • Which paradigm to use for writing chess engine?

  If you were going to write a chess game engine, what programming paradigm would you use (OOP, procedural, etc) and why whould you choose it ? By chess engine, I mean the portion of a program that evaluates the current board and decides the computer's next move. I'm asking because I thought it might be fun to write a chess engine. Then it occured to me that I could use it as a project for learning functional programming. Then it occured to me that some problems aren't well suited to the functional paradigm.   I'm not sure how exactly objects do things to other objects in a component based design. Say I have an Obj class. I do: Obj obj; obj.add(new Position()); obj.add(new Physics()); How could I then have another object not only move the ball but have those physics applied. I'm not looking for implementation details but rather abstractly how objects communicate. • Remove Duplicate Second Unity Launcher on Dual Screen

  See attached image. On my dual screen display I have a Unity Launcher on the left hand screen and also on the right hand screen. Both work perfectly fine. I don't want two Unity Launchers. Every time I move my house to the right hand side it gets slowed down over the right launcher hampering my productivity. I have an Nvidia card with the Nvidia driver and I am using TwinView. Could somebody please tell me how to remove this extra duplicated launcher?

• How to filter content in the cureently opened folder?

  there is one thing I'm missing since I've been forced to move from osx to ubuntu. for osx there is wonderful file browser named Path Finder which has very handy filter function build in. the search field in the Path Finders upper right corner isn't searching your whole HD, it's not searching in all the sub folders of a given directory (like in nautilus). it's just filtering the content of the folder you have currently opened whithout loking in to the sub folders. is there something similar (plugin, exstention...) available for nautilus? two users are already asking the same question, but the answers obviously missed the point.

  An operation in an interface is obsolete so I decided to delete it. It seems that there is no automatic support for such a "refactoring". For me is a refactoring operation since the behavior of the code will be preserved since nobody(tests, client apis) will notice that the operation was removed. In eclipse, in java code, on an method in an interface I have the following options: rename, move, change method signature, inline, extract interface, extract superclass, use supertype when possible, pull up, push down, introduce parameter objet, introduce indirection, generate declared type. There is any reason for which a delete method/field/function refactoring doesn't exist?

This year, we decided to move the Java booth to the App Planet and really engage with the increasing number of developers that are attending the event. • C# creating a simple snake game

  I was thinking about creating a snake game with C#, so I ran ideas in my head, and some problems came up. How can I track and output in the correct location the blocks that run after the snake's head? If the snake is built of five blocks, and the user starts going in a circle, how can I print the snake body in the right location? Also, how can I create an action that will run on the background, which will move the snake forward, no matter what the user does? What structure should my code have? (code design structure) This should be a console application, since it's the only framework I am familiar with. I am not looking for finished code, since I want to really understand how it should work.

• How to disable three finger gestures on touchpad?

  I am using 12.04 on a macbook pro. Everything works really well. I want to disable 3 finger gestures. It is way to easy to accidentally drag/move a window(3 finger gesture) while scrolling(2 finger gesture) when using a touchpad. I found this answer on ask ubuntu. It was marked answered but it is not. The functionality is still there. All this recommendation does is disable the drag marks on the window. This may be tricky because I want to disable 3 finger gestures but not 2 finger gestures. (ie I don't want to disable touchpad gestures all together)

  Hi, I completely do not understand how a video game can be coded. I'm a beginner programmer and only have experience writing console applications that do math and what not. I do not understand how these logical processes can make images move on the screen (video games). • Keyboard freezes when xorg crashes.

  Situation is like that. Many times has happened that Xorg freezes and with it also keyboard. Quite some times because of some Compiz effects or Flash (fullscreen switch). Keyboard becomes totaly unresponsive, while mouse still works (I can move cursor, but can't click since desktop freezes) and music still plays and I can connect trough ssh. This is the only way I know I can try to solve problem - either by killing browser&flash or lastly restarting xorg server. This problem appears on more than one Ubuntu computer. My home dekstop with proprietery nvidia driver, on my work where I use noveau driever (opensource driver for geforce) and sometimes (but rarely) also on laptop with ATI graphics (using r300g driver which is really good!). Can someone explains why mouse still works while I can't input from keyboard? (I can't switch to virtual console or do R-E-I-S-U-B command) I have USB keyboard and USB mouse.

  If you have a Slowly Changing Dimension (SCD) Type 2 for your customer and you want to calculate the number of distinct customers that bought a product, you cannot use the simple formula: Customers := DISTINCTCOUNT( FactTable[Customer Id] ) ) because it would return the number of distinct versions of customers. What you really want to do is to calculate the number of distinct application keys of the customers, that could be a lower number than the number you’ve got with the previous formula. Assuming that a Customer Code column in the Customers dimension contains the application key, you should use the following DAX formula: Customers := COUNTROWS( SUMMARIZE( FactTable, Customers[Customer Code] ) ) Be careful: only the version above is really fast, because it is solved by xVelocity (formerly known as VertiPaq) engine. Other formulas involving nested calculations might be more complex and move computation to the formula engine, resulting in slower query. • Mouse cursor freezes randomly with Intel GMA 950

  I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 its installed using Wubi, dual boot with Windows. It's fresh install. Randomly mouse cursor freezes and cant click anything on the screen. I can move mouse but cant click. "It causes when select a text something" So I'm using keyboard to to reboot system. Then it back to normal after reboot. Tried with unplugging-plugging mouse don't work. PC: Asus laptop with Intel GMA 950 graphic card. A4 tech optical mouse. Ubuntu 10.10 completely updated and upgraded. How can I get around this?

• Get Rhythmbox debugging info

  I'm having a weird problem with Rhythmbox that no one else seems to have. When I pause on any audio CD, I can't get Rhythmbox to play it again. I've tried various workarounds including trying to play next/previous track, trying to manually move the seek bar, etc. but to no avail. When this happens I've no choice but to remove the CD from my drive and insert it again. There does not seem to be anything weird with my system when this happens, apart from the fact that Rhythmbox isn't playing as it is supposed to. Is there anything I can do to get more info on why Rhythmbox is acting up as such?
